Western Mining Corporation Limited owns and operates the St Ives Gold Plant located near Kambalda, approximately 90 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Production commenced in March 1988 at a design capacity of approxi­mately two million tonnes per year. The plant was quickly expanded as a result of new ore discoveries in the district and has been processing ore since 1993 at the rate of three million tonnes per year. The plant has recovered over 50 tonnes of gold since the operation began, The plant was able to maintain acceptable recoveries throughout the plant expansion phases. Further gains in recovery were possible since there was still free gold in the tailings after approximately 24 hours of leaching. Testwork carried out on prospective orebodies showed that some contained considerable quantities of free visible gold, while others were seen to be semi­refractory using a conventional grind - leach circuit. Alternative treatment techniques were considered because a substantial amount of revenue was lost with the treatment of these ore bodies using conventional milling techniquies. The basis for all the investigations was to maximise the gold recovery from each orebody while minimising the effective cost per ounce of gold produced,

In the past, it was not unusual for coal preparation plants to discard fine run-of-mine coal. This practice has changed due to increasing quantities of fine material, improvements in beneficiation methods, and the need to recover revenue from these fines. It is in this context that the coal industry has increasingly been turning to froth flotation for fine coal beneficiation. Reagent schemes have been developed to promote coal flotation and to treat the resulting refuse material. While reagent technology has improved, however, most plants rely on manual control of reagent dosing and circuit operation. This often results in misuse of reagents, loss of coal recovery, and consequent loss of revenue. Fine coal circuit operations can be dramatically improved through automation. Intelligent process control systems are now in use which are capable of optimizing reagent usage, maximizing coal recovery, and minimizing chemical costs associated with refuse handling. This paper describes a type of control system currently used in preparation plants, and provides data and information on the significant improvements such systems can produce.

The great increase in post-World War I1 use of molybdenum was made possible by discoveries of that metal in porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits. This section documents significant porphyry molybdenum discoveries of the post-war period. The most important discovery was Henderson in Colorado. It is not only one of the world's largest and richest, but it was found by a team of geologists who defined the hood model and tested it successfully at Henderson. Under the leadership of Stewart Wallace, these scientists established a set of criteria for exploration for Henderson-type de- posits that was copied by the industry. The discovery bf vertical cylinder type porphyry molybdenum deposits was less renowned. Boss Mountain in British Columbia and then Mt. Pleasant in New Brunswick were given relatively scant notice, compared with the Henderson discovery. However, these deposits have geometrics distinct from that found in the typical hood, which directly affects their exploration characteristics. Mt. Pleasant, included in this section, is a well defined, near vertical breccia pipe. Both the Henderson and Mt. Pleasant discoveries were made by relatively small groups operating independently of the bureaucracy that characterizes large corporations. The management role in each case was one of encouragement. In addition, Wallace had the beneficial experience of working for Climax, whose objective was the discovery of porphyry molybdenum deposits. Henderson was the natural outgrowth of the exploration effort by those who studied and understood the Climax deposit.

In recent years, diminishing supplies of high grade ores and increasing consumption of mineral and metal products have demanded high efficiencies in extraction processes. The rising cost of energy has influenced plant operating policies. Rather than merely processing as much ore as possible, other process factors are being considered in process analysis, with energy consumed per ton of product produced taking on increased importance. Alternate processes and more efficient plant design may satisfy part of the demand placed on the mineral processing industries. However it is expected that the improvement of existing operatives will be responsible for most of the gains in efficiency in the short term. Even slight improvements in process efficiency lead to significant cost saving. Grinding, for example, is an inherently energy-intensive process. Grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high and it is essential that circuits run as efficiently as possible. In flotation plants, low-grade ores demand optimum recovery of valuables to maintain overall metallurgical efficiency. The use of modern data, treatment methods and systems analysis provide the means to achieve many goals, previously beyond reach. The design of more efficient plants and the evaluation and. improvement of existing plant operations constitute the general area of process analysis. Process analysis can be used to identify the capacity available in a process unit in some cases. In other cases, the goal may be to investigate alternative equipment configurations for an existing plant for possible improvement in efficiency. This goal is virtually impossible to achieve using plant data alone. A simulator of the process units involved can provide an excellent basis for performing the required process analysis.

Unlined water tunnels have often been used as pressure conduits for hydroelectric projects. However, fallouts of rock in such tunnels are not uncommon and in many cases have been attributed to erosion of shears and seams. A case history of such a fallout is described. An appraisal of the conditions pertaining to the fallout led to the conclusion that rapid changes in the water pressure in the tunnel resulting from operating conditions were significant factors in initiating the fallout. Other factors that contributed to the fallout are also described.

Introduction America's workforce is the heart of the nation's economy. The health of its members is a matter of national priority. Statistics show that the most common cause of job difficulties is excess use of alcohol or other drugs. Up to 75% of these troubled employees can be returned to productive careers at little expense and with great benefit to their industries. Of the 1.5 million private corporations in the US, only about 500 have alcohol treatment programs. Even fewer have drug abuse programs. It is time that the myths and prejudices surrounding alcohol and drug abuse are dispelled and help is offered. Corporations and labor unions are now finding that programs to treat these diseases benefit both the employees and the industry. The employee derives health and job security. The company sees increased productivity and decreased costs in sick pay and absenteeism. Unfortunately, three-fourths of the nation's 90.5 million workers are employed in establishments of fewer than 500 employees. In these settings, it is unlikely that either management or the unions will take the initiative in developing programs. Alcohol alone affects the health and productivity of nearly 8% of any workforce. This translates to more than 5 million employees in small business. These workers present an opportunity and a challenge. Alcohol abuse costs the nation nearly $116 billion annually. Seventy billion dollars is attributed to lost production. Medical expenditures related to alcohol are estimated to be nearly $13 billion. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates the cost of substance abuse to industry to be in excess of $4 billion a year. In addition to its economic impact, substance abuse has serious personal and social consequences. The mining industry experiences the same exposure as other industries to alcohol, drug abuse, and other employee problems. However, the existence of these problems poses special hazards because of the unique conditions found in mining. Mining has many safety and health hazards. A new examination of tabular uranium (U)-vanadium (V) deposits within the La Sal district places mineralization in the context of the complex fluid flow history that has occurred in the Paradox Basin and Colorado Plateau. As the only currently producing district of this deposit type in the region, the La Sal district provides excellent opportunities to study deposit- and district-scale features that can serve as exploration guides where exposure is limited. The absence of major structures along a narrow and elongate mineral trend that runs E-W across the southern part of the Utah-Colorado border indicates a regional lithologic control. The trend was likely influenced by Jurassic drainage patterns, as indicated by paleocurrent directions shown in Fig. 1. Fluvial sandstone host rocks in the Jurassic Morrison Formation contain significant evidence of multiple superimposed fluid systems that have progressively changed local mineralogy. Apart from the presence of ore minerals, remnants of fluid systems are preserved as cements including quartz overgrowths, compositionally distinct carbonates, and sheet silicates. New geochronology methods provide constraints on the timing of initial mineralization and later remobilization. U-Pb ages of calcite associated with ore minerals provide evidence for Early Cretaceous mineralization, whereas textures and K-Ar ages show that early-formed V-minerals were replaced at the expense of V-bearing micas and clays during the Eocene. I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two-stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench-scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

Environmental declarations of Belgian bluestone and sandstone products were realized in accordance with the ISO standards and following the standard NF P 01-010. The main goals of these studies were to obtain Belgian environmental product declarations to strengthen existing databases and to provide defences against Asian competition. Indeed, competition with China for bluestone products and with India for sandstone pavement is very important due the fact of the very competitive prices for foreign products. This paper presents the development of a rock-creep measuring apparatus using air as the initial pressure source. Servo-controlled machines can and have been used for time-dependent property tests. However, the long-term nature of some tests makes essential the complete independence of stress-maintaining equipment from main power sources or continuously running hydraulic pumps. The main objective of this paper is the development of a creep testing machine that is free from interference arising through power supply interruptions or mechanical maintenance normally associated with many compression testing machines. To achieve this, a compressed-air power source was used to drive a compression ram. A few trial results obtained and analyzed using the transient creep law are in reasonable agreement with the general creep law.

Characterizing the structure of such open-structured dusts such as diesel soot and those present in welding fumes plus any other dusts which were initially formed by precipitation or agglomoration of subsidiary units in a flame process has always been a difficult task. Recently, scientists have been able to use the concepts of fractal geometry to model the growth of diesel soot and fume fine particles and characterize their structure using fractal dimensions. The measured fractal dimension of a diesel exhaust at various levels of scrutiny can be used to study the health hazards posed by the soot. Thus, the fractal dimensions of the overall structure can be related to the dynamics of the dust both empirically and theoretically. In this communication, the use of fractal dimensions to describe the structure of smoke and fine particles which pose a respirable hazard are reviewed. Experimental studies linking the measured fractal dimensions of the fine particles to dynamics of the fine particles in respirators and in the lung are outlined.

Within NESMI there are different ways to set up indicators and evaluate them throughout the NESMI Members. First analyses concerning the Demand and Competence within NESMI are developed. New focus points for analyses can be implemented into NESMI.

The current US national commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the Moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation and relative benefits of various sources.

A series of bench-scale bleaching tests have been carried out on kaolin samples from the Rio Capim area( northern Brazil) at CETEM/CNPq. The whole sample has been homogenized and submitted to particle size separation, when the + 44 µm fraction has been discarded, prior to being bleached. The main objective of this series of tests has been to evaluate the possible effects of interactions among variables which are believed to play important roles in the bleaching operation on the efficiency of the process itself in terms of the brightness achieved in the final product The tests have been planned according to a classical four-variable, two-level factorial technique. The chosen variables have been the pH, sodium dithionite addition, aluminium sulphate addition and bleaching time. The study has shown that, apart of time, all other three variables are significant. None of the interactions among them have shown to be of significance. Brightness numbers close to 88 have been obtained in the products, which represents an improvement, since brightness for the non-bleached - 44 µm Rio Capim kaolin sample averages 83.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyurethane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft- are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners' safety. Although these heavy polyurethanes lend themselves to a "pouring" application around the annulus of the shaft liners and is a continuous process, past experience with atomizing and frothing polyurethane spray systems indicates a high degree of maintenance and operator attention to the nozzle1 delivery system. This may require more miner's time to be spent in the shaft maintaining the foam system, negating some of the safety advantages of the system. If polyurethane foams are to be used in mines, they must be of the highest quality available in terms of flame spread, heat emitted while curing, and contaminants emitted while curing and spraying. In addition, employees must be given adequate training and be thoroughly informed in all aspects of polyurethane foam safety procedures. As witnessed by our fellow miners in South Africa, we can accept no less.
