A number of infrastructure projects are on progress all around Greece at the moment. The common propose of these a project is the promotion of quality in: Design, construction and maintenance stages. They also comply with environmental management, which is, a method of organizing and implementing environmental protection measures. The paper includes by special reference on two important modern transport infrastructure projects for the development of Greece and its communication with Europe and the Balkans. Their landscape types and natural vegetation, local climate, geological conditions, altitudes, aspects and soil types vary As a result, upland landscapes in particular, are endangered. Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

"Water inrush is a serious geological accident in underground coal mines. This paper focuses on the method of the bow tie analysis based on fuzzy reliability to assess the risk of water inrush in coal mines. First, post failure probability and repair probability of initiating events are divided into 5 levels. Then triangular fuzzy numbers are adopted to quantify experts’ language and to acquire the reliability rate which close to the actual values by defuzzification and calculation. According to dynamic bow-tie analysis model, using the method of moments to fit the reliability time of events by Weibull distribution and offering the random sampling rule of failure and repair time for illustrating the feasibility of fuzzy reliability evaluation. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed assessment approach, bow tie analysis model of water inrush in coal mines is taken as an example.Introduction Dynamic bow tie (DBT) analysis is composed of dynamic fault tree and dynamic event tree analysis, and considers the impact of the time factor upon risk assessment of a system. There are many algorithms applied to calculation of the probabilities of node accident and accident consequence of dynamic bow tie analysis: Hidden Markov Model, Bayesian Network (Khakzad et al 2013), Integral Algorithm (Amari et al 2003) and Monte Carlo Simulation (Kim et al 2016). In terms of simulated time and practicability, the Monte Carlo Simulation has an advantage over other methods. DBT requires mass data in quantitative analysis, including the failure rates and the repair rates of the basic events of the Fault Tree (FT) and the subsequent events of the Event Tree (ET) at different time points, i.e., the distribution of failure time and repair time. In practical analysis, it is hard to obtain a large amount of exact historical statistical data, which is a major problem of risk assessment. Due to the difficulty of obtaining the exact data and historical failure data of the basic events and the subsequent events, the FT and ET analysis is stuck with the study of minimal cut sets, minimal diameter sets, structural importance and qualitative analysis (Liu and Zhang 2010, Yan et al 2012, Wang et al 2009, Li and Wang 2011). This paper will use fuzzy numbers and the defuzzification method to transform the experts’ language into the failure rates and repair rates of basic events and subsequent events, solving the problem that it is difficult to obtain a large amount of historical statistical data, and will use the method of moment to conduct Weibull fitting of the reliability time to provide the random sampling criteria of event failure and repair time in Monte Carlo simulation."

Field-testing of a new on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzer was conducted in a copper concentrator. The evaluation of copper tailings and concentrate streams indicated a statistically acceptable correlation with laboratory chemical analyses. The new equipment employs a “components off-the-shelf” approach to minimize capital cost and maintenance issues and to utilize the latest advancements in X-ray fluorescence detector technology and computer capability. A general description of the system is provided, and performance of the analyzer measuring copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and molybdenum (Mo) is presented.

Effective ground control in the gate entries, particularly in the tailgate travelways, is essential for safe longwall mining. Longwall pillars maintain gate entry stability and carry abutment loads. To answer the need for effective longwall pillar design, an empirical method called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) was proposed several years ago. Some recent research at the Bureau of Mines has focused on the refinement and verification of the ALPS method. ALPS was originally developed from field studies in which multiple stressmeters were installed in longwall pillars and monitored during mining. Several new field studies have now been incorporated into the ALPS data base. The field measurements have' been used to verify formulas for predicting abutment strength and pillar loads, and to develop an expression for the distribution of the abutment load.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. The Homestake Mine, located in Lead, SD, has been in business for 113 years. Until 10 years ago, conventional mining methods were used to extract ore. Due to complexities in the ore bodies and increasing costs, new technology was introduced to the mine. An integral part of this technology was mechanized cut-and-fill mining. This mining method currently produces about 50% of the annual production and has proven to he safe and economical. As a result, the Homestake Mine remains competitive in today's market.

In most industries it is normal commercial policy to try to gear production to the market. In times of scarcity output is pushed to its maximum and in times of glut output is reduced. Because of the effects of supply and demand, these times correspond to times of high and low prices respectively so the policy results in maximising long run total profits. Stockpiling is often an integral part of the policy. Stocks are accumulated during depressed market conditions and sold off when demand revives. This further increases the long run total profits. However, such policies cause violent fluctuations in short term profitability and impose severe financial strains. Indeed planning and implementing the policies are a central management concern which is often critical to the success of the industry. The mining industry is no exception and, for many raw materials, trying to balance supply with demand is an international problem. Stockpiling and restricted production agreements are common elements of policy. But very little attention has been paid to the one additional control which is unique to the mining industry, namely, the cut off grade. This neglect is apparent at all levels from individual mines to national economies.

This chapter discusses a new technology for computer control in open-pit mine operations: the real time automatic dispatching of manually driven trucks to shovels. The monitoring of truck activity is accomplished by detection of local radio signals. Computer-operated directives are communicated to drivers by remote controlled digital display units inside the truck cab. The production objective is to maximize tonnage in a cost effective manner. The problem is formulated in the appendix and the solution method is briefly described. Side conditions such as maintaining delivered ore grade aims, balancing waste to ore volumes to keep within stripping ratio tolerances, and meeting production rate requirements temporarily established for certain shovels are also discussed. Experience with a developed event- to-event simulator applied to analyses of several North American mining operations using this technique is summarized. Complete systems employing this technology are now under- going installation at mine sites in Canada and the United States.

Introduction The kinetic approach, to understand a process in detail, has been extensively used in the unit operations of many engineering systems. In green pelletization, the kinetic studies have been mainly oriented towards quantifying the growth mechanism (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Sastry and Fuerstenau, 1977; Capes and Danckwerts, 1965; Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1966; Kapur, 1972) and in a few cases, relating the rate of growth with added liquid content (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Newitt and Conway-Jones, 1958). Studies on the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of the order of the kinetics are virtually non-existent. Sastry and Fuerstenau (1970) classified the agglomeration process into "free in-space" (dilute particle system) and "restricted-in¬space" (highly dispersed particle system) and noted that the former is a second-order process while the latter corresponds to a pseudo first-order rate process. The present paper attempts to describe the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of order of the kinetics, using pyritiferrous shale as the material system. Experimental Pelletization experiments were carried out using -100 mesh pyritiferrous shale, in a laboratory disc pelletizer, at four intervals of pelletization time (15, 20, 25 and 30 min). The green pellets obtained were size analyzed. The size distribution of pellets has generally been represented by a single parameter such as the mean granule diameter, ratio of maximum and minimum pellet diameter, etc. In the present study, the d50 (50% passing size) of pellets has been considered to represent the size distribution of pellet. During the past decade, operators and researchers have worked toward a better understanding of the mechanisms operating in flotation. As reported by W. J. Trahar in 1981, this work commenced with the operators determining a relationship between recovery and particle size. They defined three particle size ranges, that being fine, intermediate and coarse. It was noted that the fine and the coarse ranges had slower flotation rates than the intermediate range as demonstrated by their lower recoveries.

The investigation, selection, and implementation of remedial activities for large, complex mining and milling sites is dependent on the cost-effective management of tailing and waste materials. Site investigations evaluate the contaminant source areas, assess the potential release rate of contaminants, and determine the acceptable contaminant release rate for the site. Selection of appropriate remedial activities is based on evaluation of constructability, reliability, performance, effectiveness, permanence and cost. Remedial technologies available for tailing and waste material include removal, consolidation, capping and drainage control. Proper implementation and documentation of the selected remedial activities are critical to the overall success or failure of the remedial program. A step-by-step process, established at the initiation of a project, should accurately document all construction activities, monitor environmental conditions at the site, assess the performance of the remedial activities, and, ultimately certify that the remedial activities have met relevant and appropriate standards. Case histories are presented for a uranium mill at Uravan, Colorado and a lead, zinc mine at Gilman, Colorado. These case histories provide examples as to the combination of remedial technologies that have been applied at these specific sites.

New mining health and safety training modalities are becoming increasingly prevalent in the underground mining industry. Various digital training tools have been developed over the past several years, but the extent of their use remains unclear. Advances in gamified training by way of computerbased video games and virtual reality (VR) have opened a new avenue for mine rescue and self-escape training, but these methods have not been widely adopted across the mining industry. Mine rescue and self-escape situations require a mix of in-classroom training as well as live drills, but it is important to assess the extent of and effectiveness of new training modalities. The Mine Rescue and Self-Escape Survey (MRSES) was distributed to underground mining operations to collect perceptions of current training effectiveness as well as willingness to adopt new training methods as a complement to live rescue drills. Responses from the MRSES indicate that adoption of digital training technologies has been slow-going despite an interest in their use. Further, there appears to be no meaningful connection between more frequent escape and rescue training and feelings of emergency preparedness. With relatively little use of already developed digital training tools but an interest in their adoption, it may be time to reassess current emergency preparedness training philosophies.

INTRODUCTION The impact of modern mining and ore processing on the environment is readily minimised. Our improving knowledge of how pollutants are released to and move through the environment has been accompanied by better expertise in controlling these emissions. For example, when the new mines and smelters were developed in the Viburnum Trend of Missouri a sulfur dioxide pollution problem was quickly recognized and soon controlled. (Wixson 1974) But older operations were not efficiently organized and, despite their smaller scale, they often caused major pollution problems. The British mining fields are among the world's oldest and during the heyday of their operation (approximately 1750-1900) they were worked with- out regard to their environmental impact. The Rivers Pollution Commissioners in the mid-nineteenth century were led to remark that ore dressing was carried on in a slovenly and wasteful manner and the complaints by farmers, that river borne mine wastes were poisoning both their crops and stock, were justified. (Frankland and Mortan, 1984). The Comissioners report led to the 1876 River Pollution Act of Parliament, the first modern environment protection legislation. The development of mining since the last century is characterized by improved regulation of the pollution potential of ore dressing, smelting and refining. The collective memory is unfortunately long and pessimistic. A serious problem arises when old mines are reopened especially if the mine has not been worked for several years since local action groups may soon blame the new owners for causing problems which, in reality, are longstanding and were caused by the use of earlier state of the art technology. It is therefore essential that during the early development stages prior to reopening that comprehensive studies be carried out to identify and quantify local contamination problems. These baseline studies should include surveys on the nature and composition of old tailings disposal areas and other wastes on the mine properties. The composition of air and water should be monitored. Soils are long term sinks for all heavy metals and particular attention should be paid to soils within any city areas near the mine since there are sources of heavy metals in urban areas which are not connected with mining and ore processing. This paper describes some of the results of such a study around a prospective cobalt mine in Southeastern Missouri. It is restricted to the soil survey of forest and agricultural land which took place in and around Fredericktown, Missouri. The city is located at approximately 37° 30' North and 90° 20' West and lies 143 kilometers south of St. Louis. There are several metal mines near Fredericktown, including Mine La Motte, which is the oldest and was first opened in 1720. [Figure 1] is a location map of the area. The survey described here was in connection to the reopening of the Madison Cobalt Mine which was first worked in 1947.

Coal fly ash and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) sludges can be returned to mine pits, fills and revegetation zones in Virginia by regulation if (and only if) a positive beneficial use can be shown. Utilization of alkaline fly ash for control of acid drainage from pyritic coal processing waste piles, and use as a soil amendment for revegetation, are the two dominant beneficial uses proposed over time. Both applications must be controlled by the basic chemical properties of the ash proposed for utilization. Currently, public concerns over long-term As and Se leaching from various applications are increasingly driving regulatory options for mine site utilization. Many fly ash materials are relatively low in inherent alkalinity or neutralizing ability, and certain ashes are actually acidic. Failure to add sufficient total alkalinity will result in strong acidification of the ash utilization zones, stripping heavy metals like Mn, Zn and Cu from the fly ash matrix. Similarly, if alkaline ash is loaded into non-acid forming coal wastes at high rates such that leachate pH is > 9.5, significant leaching of As and Se has been documented in large scale laboratory leaching columns. Utilization of fly ash and FGD as a mine soil amendment for revegetation is based upon combined liming and water holding capacity benefits, however, levels of soluble salts (primarily sulfate and borates) limit one-time application rates to 100 Mg/ha or less.

A new magnetic liner, with unique magnetic circuit and novel structure designs, was developed. It was characterized by light weight, low noise, as well as corrosive and abrasive resistance. The wear rate of the magnetic liner was one twentieth and one ninth those of the manganese-alloy steel and rubber ones respectively. The forming mechanism of the protective layer and that of influencing factors on magnetic liners were also investigated. The research results could not only instruct using magnetic liner, but also widen their application.

Various types of Tertiary (Miocene) lignite occurrences had been formed and alternated with volcano-sedimentary Bigadiç Formation in the field of study, which resides in the middle and eastern parts of Biga Peninsula. The focus of the study is to identify the geochemical and petrologic properties of coal occurrences and the formation mechanism of the deposits. A comparative study of the deposits will also be studied. Biga Peninsula is a very rich zone in terms of both metallic ores and industrial minerals. Most of the metallic deposits and industrial occurrences in the region have been known and mined throughout the history. This richness of the region is related to the volcanic and tectonic activities that have developed during different geological periods. These activities are the main reasons of weathering and alteration phenomenon.

El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chile, located at Los Andes Range of Mountains, 90 kilometers South far from Santiago, the capital city, has been exploited for more than 90 years, with over 1000 million tonnes of copper ore extraction. No doubt, this particular record, has been possible to achieve due to an efficient combination of human and technological efforts in the exploitation of one of the biggest ore deposits of the world. Throughout times, the exploitation has evolved from a mainly manual one to a highly mechanized exploitation. Notwithstanding, different and several geomechanical problems that occurred in one of its areas, increased the risks to personnel that should normally operate large equipments in its working face. This last condition, forced El Teniente mine to design and develop systems and technologies that would allow the use of tele-operated LHD, picking hammers and drilling equipment (jumbos) from a safe zone. Currently, El Teniente Mine is using in its extractive works equipment such as LHD, picking hammers, and drilling Jumbos, that can be manually or teleoperated commanded from a Central Control Room located one kilometer away from the production area. In general, a new technological era has been opened in the mining exploitation at El Teniente: the exploitation era with telecommanded robots.
