Open pit limit analysis techniques of various types have been utilized for many years to design ultimate pit surfaces. In the last 15 years there have been many advances in the development of sophisticated computer methods to aid this process. The extensive capability of the computer has led to multiple alternative approaches to problem solving. Computerized open pit limit analysis methods can be applied to a broad scope of long-range and intermediate-range mine planning and design questions. A single computer run develops a pit design from a set of data. A set of nonsequential runs is used to evaluate changes in pit slopes, property restraints, and mineral model variables. Ore reserve economic sensitivity and intermediate-range mining plans can be developed using sequential computer runs. Present value methods are incorporated by using iterative sequential techniques. Multiple ore processes, dump leaching credits, and the trade-off between open pit and underground mining can also be handled. Many of the applications described are representative of current practice. The remainder are suggested extensions.

The development of mechanical flotation cells has resulted in larger and better cells. This has led to flotation banks with only a few units, even in large-scale operations. This equipment development makes the old operational considerations ineffective. The flotation cell must be considered as a single reactor unit capable of handling specific tasks and getting excellent metallurgical performance. The result of the unit reactor concept development was the new large TankCell that comes in sizes up to 113 m3 (4,000 cu ft). The TankCell construction includes new modified rotor-stator designs, new tank geometries and a froth-handling capability independent from subprocesses taking place in the pulp (i.e., air addition). The conventional idea of a single flotation cell type for fine, intermediate and coarse materials does not give optimal results. Optimal flotation of coarse and fine particles needs different mechanism designs, impeller tip speeds and different froth control objectives.

The Crushed Stone Industry plays an important role in Pennsylvania's mineral economy. During 1965, the total production of crushed and broken stone in the United States reached 780 million tons from which 57 million tons were produced in Pennsylvania (Mineral Industries Surveys, 1966). It is further significant that Pennsylvania is the nation's leading crushed stone producer. Future trends in stone production will quite likely parallel those in the construction industry. Stone and stone products are finding greater and more varied uses each year. Continued record expenditures for structures such as dams, highways and buildings are the prime reasons for this accelerated growth in demand. Completion of the interstate road system and the maintenance of Pennsylvania's already expanded highway system form the essentials for this expanding market.

The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

The fundamental importance of comminution by high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology to efficiently increase the particle surface area lies in lower energy and water consumptions for iron ore pellet feed production. This study compared the ball wet milling process with the innovative HPGR processing technology for hematite-goethite ores. Green-pellet balling and induration processes were simulated on the bench and pilot scales.

A mathematically simulated modeling technique is used in this U.S. Bureau of Mines paper to represent a hypothetical mining operation with existing mining technology and prevalent mining costs. Mining scenarios are prepared and evaluated for potential benefits and costs available through computer-assisted mining. Base criteria, parameters, and methodology are described.

Interaction forces between a hydrophilic silica particle and an air bubble were measured by atomic force microscopy using simplified model systems with deionized water and dilute KCl solutions. Contributions from the hydrodynamic force were minimized by using a low piezo speed. Particle-bubble separation distance and the bubble spring constant were calculated from linear regression of the piezo extension versus cantilever deflection. The bubble surface potential was then estimated from fitting the AFM-measured forces to the Hogg-Healy-Fuerstenau (HHF) model, using the surface element integration (SEI) method. Surface potentials obtained for the bubble at a low applied force were comparable with the literature data, suggesting that the simplified model used here can give a reasonable estimation of the bubble surface potential under moderate applied forces. Interaction forces between a silica particle and an air bubble were also measured at different locations on the air bubble surface. The force curves obtained at the edges of the bubble fitted very well to the theoretical force curves regardless of the applied force, while curves obtained at the center and halfway to the center, were more difficult to fit, in particular at higher applied forces (> 13 nN), suggesting that force curves obtained at the edges of the air bubble might be less prone to deformation effects.

"The 34th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was held July 28–30 at the Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in Morgantown, WV. Ground control experts have gathered at this location since 1981 to share ideas and successes for improving designs and technologies to enhance the stability of surface and underground mining operations. Ground control is important to all mining operations but is particularly crucial to underground mining to ensure miner safety and operational viability.The year’s event had 240 registered attendees with 20 pecent of that attendance being from the mining industry. The Bureau of Mines, under a Cooperative Agreement with the Bear Coal Company, Somerset, Colorado, conducted a large scale evaluation of the effect of time lapse on roof stability. Time lapse in this study is the interval between exposure and permanent support of the mine roof. The study indicates that time lapse is not a critical factor in roof stability provided permanent support is installed before catastrophic failure begins. Concurrently with the time lapse study, investigations were made of stress distribution around resin-grouted bolts, the regional stress field, and anomalous geologic conditions. The behavior of the resin-grouted bolts, at least in the Bear mine, appears to fit the Coulomb-Navier Theory. Geologic conditions are primary factors in trends of roof stability that extend across the mine.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Good times make for happy miners. And the past few years have seen a lot of smiling mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists, corporate executives, analysts, investment bankers and shareholders. And nowhere was that more evident than at the 74th Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual meeting. The meeting, held in Toronto March 5-8, attracted a record 14,500 people. Of those, the PDAC said attendees came from an estimated 100 countries. And about 40 countries sent national delegations to the meeting. Argentina, for example, sent nearly 100 people. The PDAC meeting has always been a event where companies and individuals can get a look at numerous properties in all parts of the world that could potentially become major mines. And through the many receptions, hospitality suites and just sitting in the local restaurants and taverns, deals are usually made.

Viscosities of industrial lead slags with various compositions were measured as a function of temperature using a Brookfield viscometer. Based on the experimental data from this study and other investigations reported in the literature, an expression has been developed to correlate the viscosities of lead silicate slags as functions of composition and temperature. The effect of each individual slag component on the variation of the slag viscosity is identified. The composition dependency of viscosity of lead silicate slags is discussed. The calculated results using this viscosity expression are in good agreement with the measured data.

Precast concrete segmental lining systems have been gaining widespread use in seismically active areas and a single-pass version of such a system has been developed for use on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit (SVRT) Project in San Jose, California. The response of tunnel linings to seismic shaking is often predicted using engineering judgment, elastic closed-form solutions and numerical modeling. Such analyses generally assume a continuous structural system and hence do not explicitly model the behavior of the jointed segmental lining. A number of analyses were performed to predict radial and circumferential joint behavior during seismic ovaling and wave propagation. These analyses included a complex, three-dimensional finite element based ground-structure interaction model that incorporates inelastic constitutive soil behavior, cracked concrete properties and no-tension, frictional segment joint surfaces. The paper discusses the results of the analyses and provides guidelines for the design of precast systems in zones of high seismicity.

Introduction The porphyry copper deposit “Borska Reka” is the biggest undeveloped deposit in the Timok Magmatic Complex (TMC). Total reserve calculated manually is 611 Mt (cut-off grade 0.3% Cu) of 0.62% Cu, 0.21 g/t Au and 1.81 g/t Ag and 869 Mt of 0.58% Cu, 0.14 g/t Au and 1.11 g/t Ag using software. But since several deep drill holes are suspended in high grade (0.7% Cu) porphyry, total reserves could exceed 1Gt. The massive sulfide is also detected in the central (12 m at 4% Cu) and the bottom of porphyry style. Deposit was discovered during geologic exploration of deeper part of the Bor copper and gold deposit, i.e. area of high sulfidation with dominant massive sulfides. During exploitation of massive sulfide, constant explorations were carried out aimed at the expansion of reserve and discovery of new ore bodies. In that way, porphyry copper mineralization was discovered without knowing in the beginning that it was different mineralization type in regard to the ones that had been already identified and exploited. Vertical extension of porphyry is 0 m up to -1000 m sea level and not contoured along plunge. In the very beginning (1976), the exploration was focused on the shallow part of porphyry. That is because block caving method of massive underground mining was not developed at that time. Up to 1999, most of activity was related to underground exploration up to level -395 m. Geographic position The Bor deposit is located close to the industrial and University town Bor, which has over 50,000 inhabitants (census made in the year 2002). Apart from the Bor Mines, industrial complex of Mining & Smelting Basin Bor (RTB) comprises also a copper smelter (installed capacity up to 160,000 tons of blister copper) and tank house, copper wire factory, copper tube factory etc. Currently, RTB Bor is under privatization process that is going to be completed by the end of 2006. Up to date, over 20 companies have bought tender documentation.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2007 draws upon available information from industry, literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2007: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2007 and compiled by the USGS.

The use of a 25.4 mm diameter water-only hydrocyclone for separating fine-size (-150 µm), high-density (>4.5 g/cc) particles from similar-size, lower-density (2.65 glee) particles was investigated. It was found that a single-stage separation recovered nearly 90% of the heavy minerals (7.0 g/cc), while achieving a volume reduction of about 70%. The use of dense medium in a single stage improved volume reductions to 90% at similar heavy mineral recoveries. In addition, computer simulations of a three-stage circuit were performed, which showed that recoveries approaching 97% with volume reductions of 95% were possible.

Through the process of Riverbank Filtration (RBF), the Louisville Water Company plans to obtain a higher quality source of water for their B.E. Payne Water Treatment Plant (WTP) by means of four collector wells located in the alluvial aquifer along the bank of the Ohio River. The collector wells are connected to a 2,850 L/s (65 mgd) pumping station by a 2,362 m (7,750 ft) long, 3 m (10 ft) finished diameter tunnel located in limestone and shale bedrock, which is approximately 45 m (150 ft) below the surface. High tunnel boring machine (TBM) production rates were achieved in this moderately weak bedrock; most of the tunnel only required support in the crown. An unanticipated water-bearing fault and unanticipated ground behavior proved challenging and required quick thinking to minimize impacts to construction. Tunneling conditions are discussed in detail, together with the methods used for overcoming the groundwater and ground behavior challenges. The tunnel is expected to be completed in April 2009.

A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

The Vulture mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11t(12.1 st) Au and 8t (8.8st) Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely dis¬seminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence, all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold, particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pit mining of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry. The sill is a 350 m (1148 ft) long apophysis from a quartz mozonite stock to the west of the mine area. The stock has been dated at 85 my and contains abundant lesser gold occurrences in its core and about its margins. The Proterozoic rocks are notably lean in precious metals except where altered in proximity to the Creataceous stock and sill. Circumstances dictate an interpretation of epigenetic mineralization related to the Laramide intrusion.

This paper will present detailed design drawings of a flexible single floor residential superstructure proposed for both longwall and room and pillar mining conditions. All efforts were made to provide an immediately available economical alter- native for future home builders on subsidence prone land. Based on this fact, a basement was not included in the design because additional costs and measures would be required to minimize cracking and leakage. A cost comparison with a traditional superstructure demonstrated that this would be a cost effective alternative. The criteria used to determine the design of the residential structure was as follows: 1. The appearance should not be different then a typical three bedroom residence; 2. Only commercially available devices and present architectural and engineering technology should be used to achieve the required "flexibility" of the super- structure; 3. The structure as completed would be capable of resisting a predetermined amount of vertical and horizontal movement; and 4. If the structure was to experience stresses beyond its capabilities, it could be easily removed from the foundation and releveled.
