The La Colosa, Colombia porphyry gold deposit is currently in the pre-feasibility stage. This large deposit has many types of gold mineralization: native gold, electrum, and tellurides. These variations in the gold mineralization lead to variability in the gold recovery. The final process flowsheet may include gravity concentration with cyanide leaching. Metallurgical testwork is utilized to identify the zones of ore that may be problematic to recover. To help select the samples that represent the fluctuating variability zones, geometallurgical models are constructed using mineralogy and geology data. These zones are then wireframed and compared to the geological and structural models for spatial correlation. Samples for the variability testwork will be selected from these different zones to identify and analyse the effect the different gold mineralization types have on the recovery. By using geometallurgy to aid in the sample selection for metallurgical testwork, the variability in the ore body can be understood and constrained to aid in process optimization.

The Supervisory Computer System at Cities Service copper mine and concentrator at Miami, Arizona was installed at Pinto Valley in the spring of 1975. Design and specification [l] of the digital system was initiated jointly by key plant personnel at Pinto Valley and staff of Cities Service Research and Development Company. The Pinto Valley digital system [2] may be classified as a supervisory control system of hierarchical design. There are three fully independent satellite computers which retrieve and reduce the raw plant data from each of the three main operating areas - the primary crushing plant, the fine crushing plant, and the grinding and flotation plant. While the three satellite computers are core resident systems, the master computer is a disc-based operating system which also interfaces with a computer controlled on-stream x-ray analyzer system. Figure 1 illustrates the basic system configuration [3]. The software systems required to support a large system are quite diverse and vary greatly in function. The philosophy followed in dividing the software into three categories was designed to: 1) fully utilize existing process knowledge of technical staff; 2) delegate certain software tasks to outside sources already skilled and trained in software development; and 3) maintain final control over the design and operation of each system.

Following a study by NIOSH on the availability of teams in the U.S. as well as existing training sites and their capabilities, the Penn State University, leaders of the Pittsburgh Section of SME, providers of mine rescue equipment, and industry sponsors united to establish and make fully functional a student mine rescue team at Penn State University. With the growth of MERD and mine rescue competitive events at Missouri S&T, the Mine Training and Technology Center in PA, and at Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine, a critical mass of effective training venues were made available to help student teams progress and develop mine rescue skills. The challenges to be met in creating and developing a student mine rescue team will be discussed. The rewards from this type of effort will be the quick capability of graduates from mining engineering programs to be involved in not only mining operations, but industry mine rescue teams and other leadership roles as well.

This laboratory work presents a study of the effect of ultrafine grinding on the gold recovery of a highly refractory gold concentrate. The particle size of the concentrate was P80 = 46 µm and the main species present were quartz (28.58%), dolomite (25.63%), pyrite (20.93%), arsenopyrite (15.39%) and 112 g/t gold. After optimizing hydrated lime and lead nitrate additions, standard cyanidation with 1% NaCN, pH = 12.3, 25% S/L permits to recover only 9.4% of the gold. Different particle sizes were submitted to cyanidation. When the concentrate was ground to ultrafine sizes (P80= 4.6 µm), the gold recovery for the same cyanidation conditions increased to 67%, with cyanide consumption of 66.7 kg NaCN/t. Additional tests were performed in order to reduce the cyanide consumption. The reduction of the cyanide concentration in the leaching solution from 1 to 0.5% and the addition of 100 g Pb(NO3)2/t allowed the reduction of the cyanide consumption to 27.6 kg NaCN/t (58% reduction), while maintaining the same gold recovery of 67%. The remaining gold could be present as very fine inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix.

Permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established for gaseous pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and some gas-phase hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, as yet, no PEL recommended for diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA), nor is there a standard method for sampling this aerosol. The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size-selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in underground coal mines that use diesel equipment. The mine mean DEA concentrations for the five mines surveyed, determined with the PDEAS in the haulageway, was 0.89 mg/m3 with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3. DEA contributed 52 % of the respirable aerosol at this location. In three of the mines filter samples were collected for DEAassociated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biological activity determinations. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust. In general, the PAH and biological activity levels were similar for all three mines, and indicate that up to 25 % of the haulageway concentrations may be contributed by outby diesel vehicles. Measured concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. INTRODUCTION Diesel exhaust contains pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and gas-phase hydrocarbons, as well as DEA. Much of the health-related concern focuses on DEA and associated organic compounds (Watts, 1992a). A wide variety of these PAHs have been identified and some are known carcinogens and/or mutagens. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has proposed new PELs for these and other contaminants (MSHA, 1989). MSHA has also published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a separate PEL for diesel particulate (MSHA, 1992). The U.S. Bureau of Mines has collaborated with the University of Minnesota to develop and field test a PDEAS. The PDEAS is a three stage sampler based on the MSA' personal respirable dust sampler. It utilizes a respirable cyclone preclassifier followed by a 0.8 µm cut point impactor and afterfilter operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min. Respirable aerosol greater than 0.8, µm in size is collected by the impactor while DEA, less than 0.8 µm in size, is collected by the afterfilter. Hence, gravimetric analysis of the afterfilter permits measurement of DEA concentrations. This development and laboratory evaluation of the PDEAS were described previously by Cantrell (1990) and Rubow (1990). During field tests of the sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in continuous miner sections of five underground coal mines that use diesel haulage equipment. These air quality measurements included levels of selected PAH and biological activity associated with DEA collected in the intake and haulageway areas of three of the five underground mines, and CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 in two of the mines. The objectives of this paper are to present the DEA and associated pollutant concentrations measured in these mines and to assess the impact of diesel face-haulage equipment on underground mine air quality. MINE DESCRIPTIONS The mines used for the PDEAS evaluation were designated J, K, L, N, and 0. Mines K, N, and 0 are located in the Western United States, while mines J and L are located in the East. Each mine produces high volatile, bituminous coal with shift production levels varying from 500 to 2000 tons/section. Seam heights varied from 1.5 to 3.0 m. Mines K and N use continuous mining to develop longwall panels. The others are strictly room-and-pillar operations using continuous miners. The number and types of diesel-powered vehicles used at these mines were described by Watts (1992b). Mines J, K, N, and 0 use diesel power to assist in a wide range of activities in addition to coal haulage. These included road maintenance, personnel and materials transport, lubrication, and welding. Mine L used only three diesel-powered shuttle cars to haul coal. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS METHODS Aerosol Measurements Aerosol samples were collected in the mine portal area, the clean air intake to the continuous miner section, the haulageway one crosscut inby from the feeder breaker and belt, in the return airway, and on selected personnel. The haulageway sampling site was located near the point where the diesel-powered shuttle cars turn around to dump their loads. Additional respirable and DEA samples were collected and have been reported by Haney (1990).

This paper describes the successful management and construction of the 5.18 m (17 ft) diameter, segmentally lined, North Dorchester Bay CSO storage tunnel in Boston, MA. This 3,300 m (10,830 ft) long tunnel was mined through variable soft ground with only 6 m (20 ft) of cover, using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. These extensive data collected from the projects unique automated and internet accessible geotechnical and TBM monitoring system, will be examined and used to explore the relationships between geological conditions, TBM operating parameters and measured settlements. The paper will also discuss the use of screw revolutions as an indicator of muck volume.

Your assessment of the minerals business. The global mining industry is strong. I am convinced it will continue meeting the mineral needs of the world population for the foreseeable future. Two developments have greatly enhanced the industry’s ability to produce low-cost minerals. Technological innovations have resulted in increased productivity. And there has also been a dramatic expansion of the number of favorable countries in which to explore and mine. Capital expenditures have flowed to the low-production-cost mines and development projects as well as to the exploration projects and stable countries having the best potential for valuable mineral discoveries.

Lidar scanning has become an increasingly popular tool for documenting underground excavations; however, high costs of traditional mechanical electrical lidar hardware, software, and training have limited the frequency at which lidar scans can be performed. Additionally, traditional scanning can be time consuming because multiple scan positions are necessary. With Apple’s incorporation of low-cost mobile solidstate lidar on select smartphones and tablets, lidar is becoming more tractable for everyday construction documentation similar to construction photo collection with smartphones. Here, we describe benefits of mobile solid-state lidar and describe several practical applications for use in underground construction, such as documenting the working face, over-blast, and geologic features of tunnels.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. "An acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2•4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4•H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 hours with a sulfuric acid-toconcentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different concentrations. The purpose of this paper is to present our examination of the effects of sulfuric acid dosage on the extractions of Cu, Fe, and As from an enargite concentrate. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.IntroductionThe occurrence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) in copper ores and concentrates and the associated high arsenic values in such resources have resulted in a considerable decrease in the demand for such concentrates because they cannot be economically processed using conventional technologies such as smelting and atmospheric leaching (Mihajlovic et al., 2011). The exploitation of such problematic deposits through competitive treatment strategies will be required in the near future in order to satisfy increasing pressure from the copper market. It is expected that the average arsenic grade of copper concentrates will increase from 0.17% in 2008 to 0.22% by 2020 (Mayhew et al., 2011).The acid bake-leach process was identified and selected for further investigation at the University of Utah as a possible process alternative for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this case, adequate amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid are mixed with the concentrate and heated to the temperature range 150-300°C. Subsequently, the baked material is leached with water/weak acid and the acid bake-leach process has some advantages over conventional sulfuric acid leaching (Prater et al., 1970). During water leaching, metal sulfates are released in solution, after which they can be extracted through well-known hydrometallurgical techniques. While the majority of the work has been done on oxide minerals, there is a limited record of sulfuric acid baking of sulfides."

[Duquesne Light Company&apos;s three power plants in western Pennsylvania are now receiving high BTU clean coal from a new coal preparation plant. When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. Environmental improvement is an important benefit of the cleaner, more complete combustion.]

Mr. Chairman; honored guests; ladies and gentlemen: The subject assigned me today by your committee, according to the program, is "the mineral industry and the public land law I have preferred to title the talk, "you can&apos;t mine here", for that is the essence of the message we, as an industry, have been getting from so many agencies of the federal government for so long. And, unfortunately, we can expect to hear the same message even louder and clearer -- with increasing frequency in future, unless. Every segment of the industry devotes the necessary time, energy and creative thought to combat successfully the forces that are writing and broadcasting that message. I said that agencies of the federal government are sending the message --- and this, of course, is true, the forest service, for example, and some bureaus of the department of the interior as well as others have appeared in recent years to be abiding by a policy designed to block mineral entry to as much of the public lands as possible and to wipe out existing mining claims.

Each year, Florida mines approximately 40 million tons of phosphorite, most of which is ultimately converted to various commercial fertilizers. The phosphorite is mined from within the bottom portion of the 40-to 60-ft. thick surficial aquifer, using open pit mining techniques. The ore zone or "matrix" is generally overlain by relatively permeable fine sand to silty and slightly clayey fine sand. The ore itself is highly variable in nature but, in Central Florida, typically consists of less permeable clayey phosphatic sands and sandy clays with stringers of permeable sand. The ore is much more sandy in the north Florida mining area.

In recent years the hue and cry of American industry concerning the pressure of foreign competition on the domestic marketplace has become all too familiar to most of us, as we are all well aware, the steel industry has not been exempted from this pressure, reduced production levels, work force cutbacks, and in some extreme cases, plant closings and company liquidations have resulted, new regulations governing imports and quotas have been enacted, foreign trade agreements reached, and more strict regulation enforcement practices undertaken, despite these, and other measures, the impact of aggressive foreign competition has not lessened, the concensus of numerous management consultants is that in order to successfully cope with these problems we must draw on all available technology to provide the tools which will enable us to enhance our management effectiveness, one area requiring particularly close attention in any mining operation is that of managing critical resources - namely time, energy and equipment in a fast and efficient manner, In mining, with critical resources deployed over a large geographical area, any degree of success involved with resource management is dependent upon knowing the current status of all work related activities, if we, as mine operators, are to be more successful in this area, additional tools are a necessity and modern technology has provided a multitude of new options from which to choose.

The Lenox Avenue Reconstruction Project involved the excavation and replacement of 750 m (2,500 ft) of deteriorated subway invert concrete, 5 to 7 m (15 to20 ft) below water table in very permeable ground. The Replacement work was done over an 8 month period, while maintaining track service through this subway section. The project was dewatered with a single 125 l/s (2,000 gpm) wellpoint system,750 m (2,500 ft) in length, which was installed from inside the active tunnel structure and configured to coexist in the subway tunnel with operating trains as well as the construction activities. A thin diaphragm jet grout wall was utilized on one end of the site to cut off the flow of water across a difficult geological interface that was situated immediately below the tunnel invert. The thin diaphragm jet grout wall permitted the large 116th Street Station area to be dewatered completely with well points from outside of the excavation.

Solvay Chemicals Company mines trona in south-central Wyoming and has done so for many years. The mine is one of several in a mid-continent sedimentary basin that hosts the largest trona resource in the world. Trona is an evaporite, a sesquicarbonate that occurs in several seams of varying thicknesses and depths. Trona is processed into soda ash which has a number of industrial uses in the manufacture of glass, detergent, paper and chemicals. Figure 1 shows the location of the Solvay Mine. A ventilation shaft was recently excavated at Solvay Chemical Company’s mine in the trona patch. In fact, a 22 ft (6.7 m) diameter shaft (inside diameter) was bored upwards from the 1500 ft (457 m) level to the surface. The first bored section was 26 ft (7.9 m) in diameter that allowed for a 2 ft (0.6 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 1500 ft (457 m). A second bored section was 24 ft, (7.3 m) in diameter that allowed for a 1 ft (0.3 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 750 ft (229 m). This shaft is the #5 Shaft. Figure 2 shows the cutter head used to excavate the shaft.
