This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of pore pressure regime on the factor of safety (FS) and the anticipated critical failure mechanism for a fly ash storage facility. In this study, pore pressure measurements from standpipe piezometers and pore pressure estimated from seepage analysis were used for a comparison of the estimated FS for a fly ash slope. This comparison was applied for static and seismic scenarios. To account for the uncertainties resulting from the limited data available and support a qualitative risk assessment evaluation, a probabilistic analysis was performed. The slope stability analysis was conducted in 2D and 3D, adopting the limit equilibrium analysis approach, and a finite element seepage analysis. The results suggest consistency of failure surfaces for 2D and 3D and an increase in FS values of 5 percent for the 3D approach, limitations of standpipe piezometers. The study demonstrated the sensitivity of the FS value, and the implication of adopting representative material properties, and water table levels, especially in cases where limited data are available, and assumptions need to be made to assess the long-term stability of a fly ash dam facility.

INTRODUCTION Since the first introduction of explosives into mining operations, safety considerations have prohibited the use of machinery in association with the explosives. Only within the last 25 years has this situation changed appre¬ciably; the closest thing to "machinery" used by a powderman in the "old days" was his wooden tamping stick. With the blackpowder and dynamite used during the first 150 or so years of mining blasts, substituting a drill steel or a metal "spoon" invited serious disaster. With the advent of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives (1950s) and water-gel explosives (1970s) for underground blasting, machinery started to play a large part in blasting procedures. The lower sensitivity of ANFO and water gels allows these prod¬ucts to be loaded in a variety of safe ways. Not only has this meant cost savings in labor and blasting materials, but it has also resulted in whole new mining concepts where the limitations of dynamite previously made those concepts uneconomical, impossible, or excessively risky. Increasingly (totally for some mines), the traditional tamping stick has given way to a variety of pneumatic machines for loading explosives and blasting agents. The resulting blasting operations have become safer, more efficient, less uncomfortable for personnel, and a major step forward in mining technology. ANFO LOADING EQUIPMENT Three basic types of loaders are used for ANFO explosives, these being the pressure-vessel loaders, Venturi loaders, and combination loaders. Pressure-Vessel ANFO Loaders ANFO consists of prilled ammonium nitrate (porous pellets I to 2 mm in diam) and fuel oil in the appro¬priate 94 to 6% blend. The material is fairly dry, pourable, and easily conveyed by an air stream. One device or system for handling (hole loading) ANFO is the pressure-vessel loader. ANFO is dumped into the vessel or "pot," and the vessel then is pres¬surized. The ANFO is conveyed out of the bottom of the vessel into a semiconductive hose that has been inserted into the blasthole. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical pressure-vessel loader in use. Applications: The use of pressure-vessel loaders is widespread in room-and-pillar mines, including salt, potash, trona, lead, and other rubber-tired mines where the heavy pressure vessels can be mounted on a vehicle for transport from face to face. The vessel often is large enough to hold eight or more 23-kg (50-1b) bags of ANFO, so several faces can be loaded before refilling. The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

"Modern society demands much more from the mining industry than just the raw materials it produces. In addition to providing copper, gold, coal and other minerals that make society function, the industry must conduct its operations in a safe and environmentally sustainable manner. This includes the equipment used and the engines that power the machines.In the United States, Tier 4 diesel engine standards that were set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are the strictest emissions requirement for off-highway diesel engines. This requirement regulates the amount of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that can be emitted from an off-highway diesel engine. In Europe, the Euro V standards are driving technology advancement in the sector.The European Euro V standards are required for new equipment manufactured beginning in January 2019. U.S. Tier 4 standards for heavy-duty off-road engines came into effect with model-year 2014 vehicles and equipment. China 6 standards come into effect in July 2020. India’s Bharat Stage VI standards will take full effect in 2020, and the phase-in of BSVIcompliant clean fuels began in April 2018.Caterpillar, Cummins and MTU are three of the leading manufacturers of engines for the mining sector. Each company is working toward creating efficient engines that can function in the often harsh environments found at openpit and underground mines around the world. In short, society is placing demands that are challenging engine manufacturers to deliver a product that can do more work while consuming less fuel and emitting fewer emissions.Technologies range from selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to other engine strategies and emissions control technologies, which deliver near-zero black carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. The 1996 Arizona Conference was held in Tucson on Dec. 8 and 9. Attendance was 648, a 12% increase from the 1995 conference. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, representing SME sections from throughout Arizona and adjacent areas. In addition to those representing mining and processing operations in the Arizona region, the meeting was well attended by interested parties from throughout North America. These included vendors, consultants, academia, research organizations and corporate management. The technical program highlighted the meeting. It consisted of a keynote address and morning and afternoon technical sessions. In the technical sessions, 23 papers were presented by the mining, hydrometallurgical, smelting, geology and mineral-processing divisions. The conference was then capped by a banquet that included a talk by a noted economist. Keynote address The program was kicked off by a keynote address titled "Forecasting for the 105th Congress," by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ). He was elected to Arizona's Fourth Congressional District in 1994. Shadegg serves on the House Budget Committee, the Resources Committee and the watchdog Government Reform Committee. He stressed the familiar conservative positions of reducing government spending, balancing the budget and states rights. As a member of the House Resources Committee, Shadegg stated his support for the mining industry. Technical sessions Mining division. Two of the five presentations described developments at two Arizona mining operations. T.J. Swendseid of Phelps Dodge presented a paper titled "New developments at Morenci" and P. Garretson of BHP presented a paper titled "Startup of the Robinson Project." Morenci continues to expand its operation and recently broke records for production. Other developments at Morenci included the completion of a 600-m (2,000-ft) drainage tunnel and stockpile rehandling. In addition, Phelps Dodge moved Morenci's crusher plant. It was completely disassembled and reassembled in just eight days. Another interesting presentation was "Predictive maintenance techniques for large electric shovels at Cyprus Sierrita," presented by T. Ritzel of Cyprus Amax. The presentation described high-technology methods for predicting maintenance problems. These methods included vibration analysis, ultrasonic detection, infrared thermography, electrical measurements and tribology (the science of lubricant evaluation). The benefits of these techniques are reduced downtime of the equipment, as was demonstrated in case studies at the mine. The other presentations were "Introduction to NOSA 5-star safety program," by R. McKinnon, BHP Copper North America, and "A new design guideline for mine sealing," by K. Fuenkajorn, Rock Engineering International. Hydrometallurgical division. The hydrometallurgical session consisted of five papers. These included a presentation titled "Recovery of gold and silver using guanidine-based extractants," by M. Vining of Henkel Corp., Tucson, AZ. In this presentation, guanidine-based extractants LIX-79 and AURIX resin were introduced. LIX-79 was shown to have applications in copper-gold and high silver ores. In ammonia-cyanide leaching, AURIX was shown to be more selective in CIL vs. RIL comparisons. Other papers in the hydrometallurgical division included "Application of cobalt in the copper industry," by J. Hawke, OMG Apex Inc.; "Series parallel conversions and production gains at Cyprus Miami Mining's dump leach and solvent extraction operation," by E. Bilson of Cyprus Amax; "Lead alloy anode corrosion at the San Manuel SXEW tankhouse," by W .M. Gort of BHP Copper and "Hydrometallurgical treatment of copper refinery slimes," by B.C. Wesstrom of Phelps Dodge. Smelting division. Three papers were presented in the smelting division session. These included updates and reports on improvements at the Hayden, Hidalgo and BHP San Manuel smelters. For example, W.A. Dutton of Phelps Dodge presented "Recent improvements at the Hidalgo Smelter." These changes were aimed at reducing environmental emissions and increasing production. They included modifications to the fugitive-gas collection system to reduce particulate emissions, rubber lining the acid plant scrubbers to reduce corrosion and the installation of a cold lime softening system for water treatment. Equally interesting papers were presented by D. Norton of Asarco, Hayden, AZ, in a paper titled "Update of the Hayden smelter process," and by D. Jones of BHP Copper, San Manuel, AZ, in a paper titled "Update on first campaign of the BHP San Manuel Copper." Geology division. The session began with a paper that outlined the progress of an exploration project in South America. "The Pierina exploration project, Ancash Province, Peru" was presented by J.D. The "Athabasca oil sands" of the McMurray formation in northeastern Alberta cover an area of about 21,000 square miles and contain the world's largest reserve of oil. Fort McMurray, a small town in the heart of the oil sands area, is about 235 air miles north- east of Edmonton. A railway serves the town but no year-round roads connect the town with the rest of Alberta. (Figure 1). The McMurray formation is of early Cretaceous age, deposited unconformably on a limestone surface of Devonian age. The sediments appear to have originated from the Canadian Shield to the east and were deposited in bays and deltas of large fresh water lakes. The lakes were later replaced by marine seas in which t the overlying Clearwater shale was deposited. (Figure 2).

"Mercury (Hg) is toxic and has long-term effect on the muscle tissues, the brain and the central nervous system functions due to its bioaccumulation and biotransformation effect. Hg pollution around the world is high and this has attracted much global concern such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury, held in 2013. For several years, mercury has been the chemical of choice for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) gold extraction, accounting for about one-third of the global mercury consumption. A greater percentage of this ends up in the environment through open burning of amalgam, spillage and indiscriminate disposal of waste. To break this wall of mercury pollution, it is very important for the mercury used to be recycled through the use of mercury retort units. This brings into the limelight, the Lantern Retort which tries to synergise the high conductivity of steel and the see-through effect of glass, thus, improving the amalgamation process. A research conducted on improving the original Lantern Retort arrived at an appropriate distillation length of 5.08 cm which was used in redesigning a more efficient retort. The improved Lantern Retort recovered about 98% of the mercury used. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and Small-scale mining (ASM) is an informal mining activities which employ quite simple tools such as pickaxes, sluice boxes, shovels, chisels, metal bars, mattocks and water pumps for mining and processing of gold ores. The artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has served as source of employment for many people in developing countries including Ghana (Aryee, 2001; Hilson and Potter, 2003; Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah et al., 2010) and has provided a substantial amount of foreign exchange through its activities (Hilson, 2001; Styles et al., 2010). Hentschel et al. in 2003 estimated that about thirteen (13) million people are said to be engaged directly in the small-scale mining activities worldwide. However, an estimated 100 million people are said to depend on this sector for their livelihood mainly in developing countries. In China alone, a projected number between 3 and 15 million people are engaged in artisanal and small-scale mining activities (Hentschel et al., 2003), whilst in Ghana, it is estimated that more than 1,000,000 people are employed directly or indirectly in the artisanal and small-scale mining activities, with 10% being women (Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014). In Ghana, ASM gold production has grown from a low of 2.2% in 1989 to a high of 34% in 2014. This figure is estimated to increase with proper documentation. This indicates that the sector has made significant socioeconomic impact on many individuals and communities as a whole. Notwithstanding the above positive contributions, the sector has also contributed to negative impacts on human, aquatic life and the environment in general due to indiscriminate mercury emission. This ‘pollution wall’ needs to be broken, and several interventions have been put in place including the use of retort units like the lantern retort (Adjei et al., 2014; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014)."

The annual consumption of sand and gravel aggregate in 2006 in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area was about 76 Mt (84 million st) (USGS, 2009), or about 18 t (20 st) per capita. Quaternary alluvial deposits in the modern stream channel of the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix are mined and processed to provide some of this aggregate to the greater Phoenix area. The Agua Fria drainage basin (Fig. 1) is characterized by rugged mountains with high elevations and steep stream gradients in the north, and by broad alluvial filled basins separated by elongated fault-block mountain ranges in the south. The Agua Fria River, the basin?s main drainage, flows south from Prescott, AZ and west of Phoenix to the Gila River. The Waddel Dam impounds Lake Pleasant and greatly limits the flow of the Agua Fria River south of the lake. The southern portion of the watershed, south of Lake Pleasant, opens out into a broad valley where the river flows through urban and agricultural lands to its confluence with the Gila River, a tributary of the Colorado River.

The transition from open pit to underground mining represents a key strategic challenge in modern mine planning. This paper presents a multicriteria and multivariable methodology to plan such a transition, integrating technical, economic, environmental, and social considerations. The proposed framework focuses on risk reduction (de-risking) through the identification of alternative development paths, the use of stochastic simulation to model geological and technical uncertainty, and different mining strategies such as methods, production rates, sequence, etc. for ultimate underground implementation. The study summarizes the limitations of traditional planning methods—which usually treat the open pit and underground mine designs as independent processes—, also often it considers a single mining method and production rate for the underground option. Instead it is proposed an integrated approach that leverages synergies between both mining methods and scalable production rates. Also the proposed methodology incorporates the definition of critical variables (geotechnical, economic, and social, among others), the construction of multiple operational and technological transition paths, and the evaluation of each path under criteria of economic attractiveness and practical do-ability (capacity to be executed). Using simulation tools (SIMPLAN for operational performance and SIMVAL for economic evaluation), probabilistic distributions of the different path are obtained, enabling the quantification of the project’s Value at Risk (VaR). A subsequent multicriteria analysis weights the expected profitability against the feasibility of execution of each alternative, producing a decision matrix that provides a framework for evaluating the different project path. As a result, the proposed approach identifies OP→UG transition strategies that maximize business value by capturing remaining resources while minimizing financial and operational risks. Finally, strategic conclusions and recommendations for the industry are provided, emphasizing the importance of early transition planning even challenging the open pit sequencing of the latest push backs by introducing early underground operations. Future work includes strengthening the methodology—such as integrating real-time analysis and adaptive decision-making—and providing recommendations for its application in various mining operations. In summary, this paper delivers a technical and professional framework to guide mining companies on when and how to carry out a successful transition from open pit to underground mining, balancing resource recovery with financial, operational, and social security.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I would like to thank Hans von Michaelis for inviting me here today to talk to you on the subject of "How to Reduce Capital and Operating Costs at Heap Leaching Projects". The comments I have to offer are based on my experiences in gold heap leaching by Newmont Gold Company in Nevada, by Newcrest in Western Australia (formerly Newmont Australia), by Minera Yanacocha in Peru, by Penmont in Mexico, by Z­Mont in Uzbekistan, by the Hochschild Group in Peru and expe­riences in copper heap leaching by Magma Copper Company in Arizona and as a consultant on several other smaller projects worldwide. These comments are a mixture of technology, ideology, philos­ophy, strategy, logic and opinions and might be looked at by many of you as "one man's view". I like to look at them as "a view from the bridge". Let me add that it doesn't bother me that you may not agree with my comments and that I would be interested in your comments or criticisms at the end of this presentation. I don't intend to discuss the details of the mineralogical and metallurgical test work. I will assume, for this talk, that the test work has been conducted very carefully and that the ore in ques­tion has been determined to be heap or dump leachable. Let's begin with a couple of don'ts! ! First, "don't build the mill until you have a mine". This might sound to many of you as fundamental but believe me it continues to happen. The minable reserves should be well known and established as being economical to mine and leach. NPVs, ROis and IRRs are fine if you can be sure of the gold price you use in your calculations. The best method is to carefully estimate the capital cost and, most importantly, the operating cost per ounce of gold recovered which should include the repayment of the borrowed capital and the interest thereon. For example, if the operating cost under these conditions is $200 per ounce, you have a project. If it is $400 per ounce, walk away f om it. Incidentally, the same prin­ciple can be applied to projects involving other metals such as silver, copper, lead, zinc, etc. The second don't is - "don't be sheep". Don't climb on the bandwagon with respect to design and operation because every­one else does it a certain way. Keep an open mind, be versatile, look for change, look for every possible innovation for reducing capital and operating costs. Beware of those who will tell you "we tried that it won't work" or "it's too expensive" or "that's a crazy idea" , <' ''what do you know about mining - you are a metallurgist aren't you" or "what do you know about metallurgy - you are a miner aren't you" or "only geologists can handle this issue". Be careful about pigeon-holing people according to their basic degree and experience. In these days of low metal prices, we need to consider everybody's ideas, as crazy as some of them might seem.

The Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in Macon County, Missouri, was constructed between 1990 and 1991 by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Land Reclamation Program for the purpose of treating acid mine drainage (AMD). The principal source of the AMD is from an underground mine that operated during the 1920&apos;s through 1950&apos;s, which was partially exposed during surface mining in the 1960’s. Limestone bedding of an AMD collection system provided alkalinity similar to an anoxic limestone drain (ALD). Because the original aerobic wetland failed when a critical dilution water supply became unavailable, the total acidity of the AMD overwhelmed the limited neutralization ability of the aerobic wetland. The aquatic vegetation deteriorated and treatment became ineffective. The Missouri Land Reclamation Program with the assistance of the Office of Surface Mining, Mid-Continent Regional Coordinating Center rehabilitated the Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in 2001, incorporating newer technologies to improve the performance. The new system, Old Bevier II treatment facility, consists of a 2-stage vertical flow pond (VFP) with associated oxidation cells and aerobic wetlands. This paper discusses the performance of this passive AMD treatment system, updating an earlier report. The new treatment system has operated with nearly continuous net alkaline discharge and a high iron removal rate. Treatment improves during warm months when emergent vegetation is fully established and biologic activity is greater. Reduction in system efficiency is evident during winter months.

The Homestake Mine included the open cut and underground workings up to 2,484 m (8,150 ft) deep. The mine ceased mining activities in December 2001 after 125 years of operation. Pumping from the underground workings continued for 18 more months until June 10, 2003. Homestake had completed a comprehensive hydrologic evaluation on post-closure underground flooding prior to the shutdown of pumping. After closure, the mine was selected by the National Science Foundation as the site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). An interim laboratory facility will be set at the 1478 m (4850 ft) Level. The final facility will be set at the 2256 m (7400 ft) Level or deeper. Pumping from the underground workings began on June 5, 2008 by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). During the period of June 2008 through March 2009, the pumping rate increased from 41 L/s (650 gpm) to 81 L/s (1,290 gpm) with an average rate of 60 L/s (950 gpm). As a result, the water level had been lowered more than 95 m (310 ft). It was found that the observed rebound and later decline to date is in close agreement with the model projections. Because of this, the authors of this paper reject claims of a lack of sufficient measurement devices in place and a lack of understanding of the hydrologic system at the Homestake Mine prior to shutdown of pumping in 2003 (Davis et al, 2009). Furthermore, it is believed that this validated model can serve as a useful tool for the SDSTA to manage future underground dewatering for the DUSEL operation. This paper evaluates the hydrologic conditions in the Homestake Mine area and projects the post-closure groundwater rebound and decline due to DUSEL pumping.

Newmont Mining’s Ahafo Mine is located in Ghana approximately 300 km (190 miles) northwest of the capital city of Accra in the Brong-Ahafo region. The nearest city is Sunyani, located 45 km (28 miles) to the north. The Ahafo Mine will process ore from seven major pits that extend along a 40-km (25-mile) strike. Four pits are in the south and three pits are in the north. The resource is currently stated at 373 t (12 million oz). But it still has the potential for growth both from new discoveries and the development of underground operations.

Introduction The performance of seals in boreholes, shafts and tunnels is an important concern in mine safety, in the control of effluents from operating and abandoned mines and in the underground containment of hazardous wastes (Einarson and Abel, 1990; Mining Waste Study, 1988). Despite the clear need for effective seals, few documented test results are available concerning the performance of in situ seals. Some evidence indicates that horizontal or near-horizontal holes are especially difficult to seal properly (Kelsall et al., 1982). This research involved the installation, extensive hydraulic testing, removal and post-test examination of a 10-cm-long x 10-cm-diam cement grout seal in a near-horizontal borehole in limestone. The work was performed in an underground mine on Marble Peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, AZ. A test hole was diamond cored in the recrystallized limestone of the Escabrosa formation. The hole is 33.24 m long, 10 cm in diam, and dips at 10.4°. The hole extends between two drifts and thus is accessible from both ends. Seal installation Surveys to assist in selecting the interval to seal consisted of core logging, video logging and constant-head injection tests using a straddle-packer unit. The location selected, 3 m from the lower end of the hole, had low hydraulic conductivity (3 x 10-10 to 3 x 10-9 cm/sec) and was free of significant fractures. The grout used, an expansive Class A cement, was provided by Dowell-Schlumberger, Tulsa, OK. A grout mass about 1.5 m in length was installed, with a dump bailer, above a temporary mechanical plug. Groundwater in the hole, if any, was minimal during placement. After 13 days of curing, the grout mass was partially drilled out from both ends, leaving a seal 10 cm long. Water distribution in rock mass The distribution of water and fluid pressure in the rock mass near the seal appears to be complex. The generally dry condition of the borehole and rock mass suggests that the rock mass near the seal was unsaturated prior to the injection tests of this research. The injection tests presumably created an expanding saturated zone around the seal. However, anomalously high fluid pressures, consistently recorded by one of two piezometers installed near the seal, suggest connection to a source of significant natural hydraulic head. Comparable head variations for closely spaced piezometers have been reported by others (Sowers, 1976). [ ] Seal testing The seal was tested for 3.5 years, using steady constant-head, tracer travel-time, dye-injection, head-buildup and transient constant-head tests. These tests are fully described in Greer and Daemen, 1991. In the head-buildup test, transient flow occurs through the seal (and rock mass) to a closed, water-filled interval of the borehole adjacent to the seal. The test consists of monitoring the rise in head in the closed interval until steady conditions are approached. The test may be analyzed in terms of a one dimensional analytical model to obtain the effective hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and specific storage (Sss) of the seal. Analysis in terms of an axisymmetric three-dimensional numerical model may yield properties of both the seal and rock mass.

Coal mines in the eastern US often use sloped shafts as production beltways for ore removal, as means of access for supplies, and for ventilation. These structures are usually completed with the help of a contractor. In late 2011, Frontier-Kemper Constructors was engaged to build a slope for a coal mine in southern Indiana. Although the site was located in familiar Illinois basin formations, the geology proved to be very difficult. This paper describes some of the challenges faced during excavation of this slope and the methods used to overcome them, including changing the method from conventional drill and blast to cutting with a continuous miner.

Jack Gerard reinforced the upbeat mood at MIN-Expo. He praised Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn for his support of the mining industry, the state’s largest manufacturing sector. Gerard is the president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association, the sponsor of MINExpo 2004.

Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and manufacturers of filtrations and pressurizations systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3 ? 89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent to the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality, thus minimizing the respirable dust exposure, to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment.

The image of the open-pit miner in the eyes or the Environmentalist has never been very outstanding. The phosphate industry, whose history in Florida reaches back to the late 1800&apos;s, can-not be credited until recently with a large number or accomplishments in terms of protection or the environment to change this image. This lack of action was not deliberate or in opposition with the desires of the public. In the formative years, there was little or no public and the companies found it necessary to build towns to house their employees and their families, towns which remained in existence until the late 50&apos;s and early 60&apos;s or formed the core of present large communities. Neither these pioneers nor most subsequent resource developers considered themselves un-thinking spoilers, nor were they so regarded by their contemporaries. Instead, they acted in a manner consistent with their environmental circumstances and intellectual heritage. Early Americans did make mistakes in using the land but the mistakes became apparent only in the opinion of later generations. Over the past five to ten years, there has been a new self-awareness in the industry with regard to environmental responsibilities brought about, in part by a continuing onslaught of new regulations with jurisdiction over our activities. Part of the new regulations are aimed at industries as a whole while many, particularly state regulations, pertain specifically to the phosphate mining industry. Why all the new regulations? The reasons are encased in a complex web of activity but stem primarily from a new public awareness of its environment. More and more of our youth have become interested in the environmental science areas such as biology and ecology. The tremendous growth rate in both the population and industry has made personal issues out of subjects such as atmospheric inversions and water shortages which previously were abstract concepts. The State has grown from a population of 1,500,000 in 1930 to approximately 9,000,000 people today. This personal impact and general lack of knowledge on the part of the public concerning economics has resulted in big business no longer being held in awe, often in contempt and generally in suspicion where environmental concerns are encountered.
