In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (PA) and District 11 (AL), respectively. While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (% IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

All mining operations, including iron ore, maintain a focus of continuous improvement and asset optimisation in their operations. As all the operations in the Mine-to-Mill value chain are inter-dependent, available technologies that address efficiencies across the value chain are once again in the spotlight as companies are driven to improve productivity and maximise mine site profits to increase return on capital invested. Core to continuous improvement is the need to understand the baseline and the impact of changes to the process. In this paper, we discuss some of the key attributes in the mine to mill process, including their influence on productivity and cost, the need for direct measurement and areas where they should be applied. Many initiatives can be considered to improve mine to mill processes. Mining operations are planned and executed based on designs and models to achieve the operation’s objectives. However, there are many variables in the different parts of the value chain, such as blasting, material handling, crushing and screening. Measurement of the key attributes establishes the baseline for Mine to Mill (or Pit to Plant) performance which is necessary to understand the impact of any proposed improvements to the process design and execution and to monitor the outcomes on an ongoing basis to sustain the improvements that have been implemented. We have focused this paper on two types of measurement – blast movement and particle size of materials through the mine to mill process. Several innovative technologies are already available to measure these attributes and assist operations improve productivity and mine site profits.

Production evaluations were conducted at Daisy Gold Mine (Glamis Gold, formerly Rayrock), between August, 1997 and August, 1998 to quantify the effect of 3M fluorochemical surfactants (fluorosurfactants) on extraction kinetics and gold recovery in gold heap leach mining operations. Ore was treated at a level of 7-10 grams surfactant per ton of ore using 3M Pluorad TM Leach Mining Additive PC-GOLD. Kinetics and gold recovery were determined by solution assay for each of the tests. Both tests indicated improved kinetics, and data from Test 2 was used for determination of a quantitative increase in gold recovery resulting from PC-GOLD addition. A discussion of test results including methods used to determine gold recovery is provided.

The heap leaching process has been widely used for recovering different metals since its first application at the end of the 1960s. In Chile, copper production via heap leaching has accounted for between 30 and 40% of annual copper production over the past 10 years. This level of production has been achieved through and supported by the use of a mathematical relation, known as the leaching ratio (LR) or irrigation ratio (IR), which relates operational parameters with metal extraction in a heap leaching operation. This ratio has been used to develop leaching column tests, to scale up results from the laboratory to industrial operations, to design new heap leaching plants, and in metallurgical control and production estimation. In spite of the widespread industrial use of this relation, few scientific studies mention it. This is due to its simplicity and basic theoretical foundations. This disparity between industrial practice and scientific research could lead to operational decisions which lack substantial theoretical support, and to scientific studies which have limited industrial impact. Against this background, several questions arise about the use of the LR: What are the constraints on the use of the LR? Are there practical advantages with respect to reported kinetic models? What is the main reason that industry prefers the use of the LR over kinetic models, which enjoy greater theoretical support? In order to guide its future use, this paper describes the leaching ratio and its current uses and limitations, through a literature review and case studies.

The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act. A major cost to a mining company is funding of an exploration program. It is a necessary cost to insure the company's future. But if the exploration effort does not discover an economic are body, there is no return on investment and the days of the company are numbered. However, if you are aware of what exploration geologists are saying, it places the exploration process in a different light. Basically they are saying that ore bodies exist that contain 250,000 tons or less of gold and silver bearing ore that is cyanide amenable utilizing heap leach technology.

Lack of visibility from cabs of the large haulage trucks used in open-pit mines has become a serious safety problem. This Anaconda research program was conducted to develop a low-cost system for alerting haulage truck operators of the presence of small vehicles in their blind areas. Several systems, developed and tested to help solve this problem, are summarized and evaluated in this paper. As the size of the haulage trucks used in large open-pit mines has increased, so have the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup tucks and cars become concealed within these blind areas and, thus, become a serious safety hazard. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 150-ton haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are those at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. It is within these areas of "no visibility" that numerous small vehicles over the years have been crushed by the large haulage trucks at various mine sites. Although the occupants in most instances, have escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed, injuries and deaths have occurred. The accidents, in most cases, were attributed to negligence or carelessness on the part of the driver of the smaller vehicle, but the problem of limited visibility still exists, and a solution is needed.

Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. Building on earlier work, an analysis relevant to international (Australasian) minerals trade is developed which accounts for both the impetus of globalization and national reaction or protection. At the firm level, integrated multinationals are contrasted with trade service providers. At the industry level tariff and, particularly, such barriers as quotas, standards, labor and environmental issues are explored. Specific areas examined include: location of both inventories and processing, sources of finance and currency risk, shipping availability and terms as related to processing level, residuals management or environmental controls, and “fair” labor standards. Intraregional rather than global trade is currently most likely.

In spite of all the work that has already been done on ferromanganese deposits, studies on the Atlantic Ocean occurrences are still in their infancy and there is a clear need for investigations concerning the origin, distribution, and resource potential assessment of these deposits. Nevertheless, studies already carried out on northeast Atlantic seamounts indicate the general presence of ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenetic origin, i.e. deposits formed by direct precipitation of colloidal, hydrated metal oxides that are scavenged from the water column on hard-rock substrates. The hydrogenetic precipitation promotes the enrichment of ferromanganese crusts in many trace metals, most of which are of economic interest, such as Co, Ni, Te, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements and thus ferromanganese crusts are considered an important metal resource.

This paper presents the results of a study of case histories of projects on which sinking caissons were used to construct shafts for tunnel construction and other underground works. Design methodologies are reviewed with respect to the impact of soil and groundwater conditions on the performance and constructability of sinking caissons. Factors which have led to success or failure are reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations for future investigation, design and construction activities are presented. Cost data for five recent projects are reviewed and compared to the cost of shaft installation by other means.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques have been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

Effective tools are not only essential for the design of practical and efficient underground mine ventilation systems but must also play an integral part in the operation of the mine. One such tool is VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software. VUMA-coal is Windows-based and has been specially designed for the simulation of underground coal mines and includes user-friendly coal specific interfaces and three-dimensional graphics designed to facilitate in the construction and analysis of networks. VUMA-coal can be utilised during the design phase of new collieries, be used to conduct ?what-if? and optimisation studies, and be integrated into the ?day-to-day? ventilation related operations. In addition, VUMA-coal can be used to simulate dust and gas distribution in a ventilation network, as well as predict the impact of control measures. This paper describes the interactive VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software and its underlying design features and outlines a case study of how VUMA-coal has been integrated into Anglo Coal?s Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Engineering [VOHE] department as part of the standard planning and evaluation process in their operational mines as well as long term planning and future mining operations.

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.

Ammonia, the principal source of fixed nitrogen, was produced by 16 companies at 31 plants in the United States during 2003. Fifty-five percent of U.S. ammonia production capacity was centered in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas because of their large reserves of natural gas, the dominant domestic feedstock. Production In 2004, U.S. producers operated at about 59 percent of their rated capacity. The United States remained the world’s second largest ammonia producer and consumer following China. Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates, nitric acid and ammonium sulfate were the major derivatives of ammonia in the United States, in descending order of importance.

Steven F. Leer, president and chief executive officer of Arch Coal Inc. will be the master of ceremonies for the 12th Annual National Mining Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. The black-tie (optional) affair will be held at the Adam’s Mark Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 10 in St. Louis, MO. Six legendary leaders will be inducted at the ceremony. They will join 145 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. R. Joe Wagner, vice president for exploration and chief geologist of The Doe Run Co., St. Louis, will be the evening’s keynote speaker. His father, Richard Edwin Wagner (1898-1979), was inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame in 1998 at the banquet in Phoenix, AZ.

The metamorphic terrane of southwestern India is a geological environment containing ilmenite source-rocks, transport drainage systems, and resultant beach sand deposits that contain altered ilmenites greater than 60wt% TiO2. As such, this environment provides a geological laboratory, from source to deposit, for the investigation of ilmenite origin, alteration, and geochemical character. Ilmenite samples from potential source rocks, river sands, and beach sands all show degrees of alteration and a variety of alteration textures (iron leaching) producing leucoxene (here defined as >70 <90wt% TiO2) and progressing to rutile (here defined as >90wt% TiO2). Distinct alteration textures are specific to different source rocks and are used together with trace element geochemistry as provenance criteria. Ilmenites are classified on the basis of their trace element content. In India, the ilmenites are classified principally according to the Mg, Nb, and Mn content and this signature defines potential source rocks, even where the ilmenite is altered to a TiO2 content of 70wt%. The trace element data may fingerprint source rocks whose ilmenite is more prone to iron leaching and that criterion has application in exploration for higher-grade ilmenites.
