Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. Each mining operation is unique in some aspect ownership; ore body location, size, geometry, grade, mineralogy, hydrology, or geotechnical parameters; or constraints such as environmental regulations. However, all mining operations are alike in one aspect; the prime objective of any mining project is to maximize the return on the investment. This is the golden rule, or in the language of mining, the investor?s law of conservation. A mineral resource, by definition, does not become a minable reserve unless the mineral or minerals can be extracted economically (and legally). The three preceding sections have covered the various types of surface mining options. The choice of the most economic method is dictated primarily by the type of de-posit to be mined, the mining rate, and the physical characteristics of the deposit.

In my experience, nothing helps me better to get off to a good start in preparing a paper or a talk than a copious consultation with a comprehensive dictionary. I also feel defining the perimeters of a particular subject is helpful to the listener and reader. Sometimes thus precisely defining even the most common of words is helpful. Our general topic this morning as all of you know is "Transportation of Industrial Minerals." The definition of transportation given by the dictionary which I think is appropriate here is: "Systems and modes of conveyance of persons or goods from place to place." Our preceding panelists have outlined for you the state of the art inso¬far as systems and modes of conveyance from place to place are concerned today via rail, water and motor. My assignment is somewhat different as indicated by my topic, "The Traffic Manager in an Industrial Minerals Operation."

As a nation, we have been known as perhaps the most wasteful in history. From the perspective of engineers and builders on the other hand, planned obsolescence and demolition did beneficially pave way for growth and provided environment for new businesses. Recent economic recession and intense competition from overseas, however, have drastically changed the economics. The high cost of capital and the demise of indiscriminate plant expansion have totally altered the way we conduct our business and run our operations. As a response to increasing demands for better efficiency with little or no funding available, everyone is forced to make do and do better with whatever little he has. Today it nay not be an exaggeration to state that modification of existing facilities may have finally emerged as a way of life. This paper will outline examples of how several companies have effectively modified existing facilities to do more and do it efficiently without having to demolish everything and/or to spend a fortune.

In-situ leaching of copper from chalcocite relies on ferric iron concentration in the lixiviant being reduced to ferrous. To re-establish the ferric concentration in solution, ferrous must be re-oxidized. This reaction is slow under normal chemical conditions but it is catalyzed by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria. BHP Copper's Miami In-situ unit developed a bio-reactor as a method of oxidizing ferrous to ferric. The effects on oxidation of temperature, CO2? oxygen, and air injection flowrate were defined. This paper summarizes the results of ferrous bio-oxidation using plastic column packing and oxide ores as bio-reactors and the leaching results of the bio-reacted lixiviant on chalcocite ores.

As the trend to deeper mines, producing from marginal ore bodies, continues, mine hoists and their associated equipment will become more sophisticated, complex, large and expensive. Over the past two decades, mine hoisting equipment and systems have moved from steam engines to static rectification of ac to dc, and electronic controls are the standard. It is the intent of this section to present what is currently available in the field of mine hoisting equipment and systems. Because the present engineer has been exposed longer and more intensively to such things as computers, electronic devices, and machine design, no attempt has been made to make this a layman's article. Contributions from the electrical design and application engineer, gearing and hearing design engineers and other specialists have been incorporated. Some material will be devoted to electrical drive systems, rectifiers and gearing design among others. These items are inherent in the design of a mine hoisting system and the subsequent selection of the correct, most reliable and most economic system. The mine hoist can be a bottleneck between the underground mine and the surface mill. Correct selection of the right type of hoist is imperative. In this vital link between mine and mill, crude estimates of hoist capacity are not good enough, and the mining engineer must design and select the right hoisting system to meet the design specifications. 15.1-MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available anywhere in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum and friction hoists are "generic" terms which describe the two basic categories. Within each category are variations, as below. 15.1.1-DRUM HOISTS Drum hoists, as noted, actually store the hoist rope on the drum much the same as line on a fishing reel. To accomplish this task, the drums are so designed to store, in one or more layers, the footage of wire rope equal to the total maximum hoisting distance plus sufficient rope for cutting and inspection at regular intervals and for holding to the drum (see Fig. 15-1). Usual practice in hoist drum design is to allow three turns of hoist rope for holding on the drum and three turns for inspection cuttings. 1. Single-Drum Hoists-Fig. 15-2 shows a typical single-drum hoist as manufactured by most U.S. heavy-mining-equipment companies. With the exception of some very minor features, this design configuration is standard throughout the U.S.A. Fig. 15-3 is a plan view of a typical single-drum mine hoist. This particular hoist has a single-motor drive and a double-reduction set of gearing.

"Colorado School of MinesResearchers at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have developed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models to study gas distributions and explosion and fire hazards in longwall gobs. In underground coal mines, methane continuously emitted from surrounding strata mixes with air from active mine workings and may form explosive gas zones (EGZs). Some western United States coal mines are also prone to spontaneous combustion (spon com). Insight into oxygen concentrations within the gob is crucial for assessing spon com hazards and mitigation strategies. Nitrogen injection used in conjunction with progressive gob sealing can reduce EGZs and spon com hazards by forming a dynamic seal that separates the methane in the gob from the air that ingresses from the face. This paper describes CFD modeling simulations studying the formation of such dynamic seals by optimizing the nitrogen injection locations. The impact of nitrogen on oxygen ingress and formation of EGZs is discussed. Optimum nitrogen injection quantities and injection locations were determined. Dynamic seal formation is most effective if the headgate nitrogen injection locations are split between the first crosscut inby the face and a second location about 300 m (1,000 ft) further inby. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall coal mine ventilation systems are designed to dilute hazardous gases and to provide breathable air to miners working in the area. Methane gas is liberated as the mining process extracts the coal and disturbs the surrounding strata. Methane mixes with the ventilation air and often produces explosive gas zones (EGZs) within longwall gobs (Brune 2013). Past CFD modeling research of underground coal mine ventilation systems has shown the effects of face air quantity on EGZs (Worrall 2012) and nitrogen injection to control spon com (Balusu et al. 2005; Ren et al. 2012; Ren et al. 2011; Smith and Yuan, 2008; Yuan and Smith, 2014). Other modeling approaches include network ventilation models of oxygen ingress (Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012), and coupled Linear Network CFD algorithms (Wedding 2014). In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), CSM researchers are using Fluent®, a CFD software package by ANSYS, Inc., to model gas compositions and flows in underground longwall gobs. Figure 1 shows a progressively sealed gob with a U-type ventilation system in a three entry development. As the longwall advances, seals are constructed along the headgate in the crosscuts between the center entry and the gob. Additional gob isolation seals are built to block off the headgate entries inby the face. Nitrogen is injected through the seals in the first two crosscuts on the headgate side and at the first crosscut inby the face on the tailgate side, as shown in Figure 1."

Experiments were carried out on 76 mm laboratory heavy medium cyclone treating -2.0 t 0.5 mm coal and on two 600 mm industrial heavy medium cyclones treating coal in the size range -13.0 t 0.5 mm. The variables studied were spigot diameter and feed medium gravity. The generalised distribution curve for the separation of coal in these heavy medium cyclones has been defined by the equation [ ] The specific gravity of separation SG has been found to increase linearly with increase in feed medium, gravity (SGf). The relationship for SG of industrial cyclone is given as 50 SG = -6.801 t 6.463 SGf t 0.0327 Spig 50 -0.02625 SGf. Spig. Further, the probable error for the separation has been found to be linearly related to (SG50 - SGf ) according to the equation [ ] The model equations developed have been used to select appropriate levels of operating conditions to achieve an increase in the yield by about 2 to 4% without affecting the quality of the product.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. A unit for separating minerals into two prescribed size fractions, designated as a Lewis Hydrosizer, was developed at the North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory. Ore samples with different mineral compositions, including coal, were separated effectively with the laboratory continuous unit. Commercial size units are in operation in North Carolina and Mexico, and under construction in Norway. Additional units are being build or are in the planning stage at several companies.

Despite a present, short-term economic recession, a remarkable enthusiasm exists in Hong Kong for building infrastructure including major tunnel projects. This paper provides details of current and recent bored tunnel works together with an insight into the impressive list of future underground projects planned by the MTRC,KCRC, Highways Department and Drainage Services Department for the next decade. Risks for each of these works including pipejacking, mixed face and rock tunnelling generally in Hong Kong are also identified. From this is evident that the scale and difficulty of such works continues to increase, requiring the use of more sophisticated methods of construction, the need for better methods of assessing and managing risks and for Government to utilize improved, more equitable Conditions of Contract for such major tunnelling projects.

"Quartz Dust is a major health hazard in underground works, wherever the ground contains quartz and depending on the chosen method of excavation. A research project initiated by the Swiss Tunnelling Society and realized by the Swiss Federal Institut of Technology, Zurich, established a correlation between the potential of quartz dust generation during excavation and well known geotechnical characteristics – the Cerchar Abrasivity Index CAI and the Uniaxial Compressive Strength UCS - of ten typical Swiss rocks. The results are at the center of a new guideline by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects on the requirements for early project stages regarding ventilation and logistics in function of the quartz dust related risk of the expected ground type of the project. The approach presented could be applied worldwide, contributing to more effective health protection as well as to better cost stability in underground works. CONTEXT Respirable quartz dust (aerodynamic diameter of particles < 10 micron) is universally recognized as a major workplace health hazard. Chronic bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer can be caused by excessive exposure to quartz dust, as has been proved by many medical studies. Therefore, the legislations of many nations specify a maximum workplace concentration (Maximale Arbeitsplatzkonzentration MAK, Occupational Exposure Level OEL). In Switzerland, for example, the Threshold Limit Value TLV for respirable Quartz or Crystalline Silica imposed by the Federal Committee on Exposure Levels (Grenzwertkommission) is 0.15mg/m3 air. Some nations refrain from establishing a OEL because of the carcinogenic nature of quartz."

24.1-BASIC PRINCIPLES JAMES R. TAYLOR The basic principle involved in maintenance is protection of a company&apos;s investment through the care and upkeep of machinery and equipment, buildings and properties. Maintenance is justified through making available to the maximum extent possible the facilities, machines and services required by the operating and production departments in their function of insuring optimum return on investment. As the size, cost and complexity of the equipment used in modern mining and related industries increase, operating and production personnel become proportionately more dependent upon maintenance engineering for its contribution to the overall profit picture. A greater part of the total cost now is charged to maintenance and the maintenance group becomes a major company unit. Basic maintenance concepts have changed very little over the years, but the advances in methods and technique have brought about tremendous challenge and have in consequence assumed a greater influence and importance. The older "sledge- hammer" methods have given way to engineered and scientific systems, while the accelerating development of intricate equipment and machinery, and the instrumentation essential for control, demand an ever-increasing upgrading of maintenance personnel. Regardless of this growth in importance, cost and complexity of the maintenance function, it is important to remember that it is not an independent and self-sufficient unit, but is a necessary facet of the entire plant operation and is subject to the company&apos;s total production effort. As one part of a team, maintenance is successful only when functioning cooperatively wit11 the other departments it serves Close collaboration in all areas served by n maintenance group is essential if it is to function fully to protect the company&apos;s investment, whether the assets are in machinery, materials or people. 24.1.1-MAINTENANCE SCOPE Maintenance functions may be grouped into the two general classifications of primary and secondary. This grouping constitutes a basic division although, in practice, the scope of the maintenance activity varies in each mine or plant and is subject to differences in size and type of operations and company policy, plus the influence of precedent, which may be sectional or industry-wide. The primary functions supply the justification for the maintenance engineering department. while secondary functions are variable according to plant conditions and needs. The primary functions may be categorized as follows: 1. Maintenance of existing machinery and equipment. 2. Maintenance of existing buildings and grounds. 3. Inspection and lubrication of equipment and machinery. 4. Utilities generation and distribution. 5. Alterations to existing equipment and facilities. 6. Installation of new equipment and facilities. 7. Instrumentation.

It wasn&apos;t until late 1976 that the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) set about to address the uranium tailings issue in earnest. It was decided that a generic environmental impact statement related to uranium milling operations would be prepared to support formal tailings regulation. We recognized, however, that this was a task that would take many years to complete and we could not take a "business as usual" approach to tailings management in the interim; the issue was too sensitive. To facilitate licensing during the interim period, the NRC developed guidelines in May 1977, for the industry in the form of the following performance objectives for tailings management: Siting and Design 1. Locate the tailings isolation area remote from people such that population exposures would be reduced to the maximum extent reasonably achievable. 2. Locate the tailings isolation area such that disruption and dispersion by natural forces is eliminated or reduced to the maximum extent reasonably achievable. 3. Design the isolation area such that seepage of toxic materials into the groundwater system would be eliminated or reduced to the maximum extent reasonably achievable. During Operations 4. Eliminate the blowing of tailings to unrestricted areas during normal operating conditions. Post Reclamation 5. Reduce direct gamma radiation from the impoundment area to essentially background. 6. Reduce the radon emanation rate from the impoundment area to about twice the emanation rate in the surrounding environs. 7. Eliminate the need for an ongoing monitoring and maintenance program following successful reclamation plan. 8. Provide surety arrangements to assure that sufficient funds are available to complete the full reclamation plan.

Past surface-mining operations in Appalachia primarily followed mountain con-tours. It is estimated that about 18,000 mi. of highwalls are exposed throughout Appalachia. An evaluation procedure for determining the secondary mining potential (SMP) of these highwalls has been proposed. Sixteen parameters affecting the SMP were isolated. These are grouped in four major categories: geologic conditions, existing infrastructure, site conditions, and environmental conditions. The parameters were then ranked by their impact on SMP and assigned weighting factors. A simple mathematical procedure yields an SMP number (0 < SMP < 100), which may then be used to compare alternative sites and technologies. Determination of limits and ranges while grouping data was aided by field visits to over 40 exposed highwalls in Eastern Kentucky. An interactive program has been developed to rapidly evaluate the SMP for pre-mined sites. The mathematical procedure estimates the relative potential (i.e., techno-logical feasibility) for remining for three predominant secondary mining methods: augering, Hi-wall mining, and underground mining. Other secondary mining methods are briefly reviewed and compared.

The Royal-Mountain King Project is 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) northwest of Copperopolis, California. Reserves of 8,250,000 t (9,100,000 st) at 2.32 g/t (0.068 oz/st) gold will be processed at 2500 t/d (2750 st/d) from three pits. Production is scheduled to begin the first quarter of 1989. District geology consists of northwest trending sequences of Jurassic meta-sedimentary and meta-volcanic rocks. Three ore bodies are located along the Hodson fault which trends northwest and dips 40 degrees northeast. The Gold Knoll and North Pit ore bodies are hosted in carbonate and silica altered meta-volcanic rocks whereas the Skyrocket ore body is hosted in quartz stockwork zones in meta-sedimentary rocks. Gold is present as inclusions and micro-veinlets in pyrite.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau&apos;s minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. With the growing dependence on coal as an energy source, finding a means to prevent or reduce the freezing of coal during winter shipment has become increasingly important. Several chemical companies focused on this problem and applied chemical technology to develop suitable solutions. As a result, a number of freeze conditioning agents have been introduced in the past few years, several of which have been highly effective in controlling frozen coal. The efficacy of these chemicals has been well established, however many users have found that only a well defined program will produce acceptable results at a reasonable cost. Positive program results yielding recognizable benefits have caused many power generating and coking plants to consider freeze conditioning agents. A freeze conditioning agent (or FCA) has been defined as a multi-component organic liquid designed to be sprayed on coal particles at bulk shipping points to assure that receiving locations will be able to unload, store and use the treated coal with minimum delay or inconvenience. The chemicals are generally applied at rates of 1 to 2 pints (0.473 to 0.946 liters) per ton and normally function by changing the crystalline structure of water left on the coal during processing. The bond strength of the ice that may subsequently form is markedly reduced. Instead of freezing into solid, unmanageable masses, the coal can be easily unloaded by rotary dumping or the opening of hopper car doors.
