Construction of Boston’s C11A1 Section of the Central Artery (I-93)/Tunnel(I-90) Project beneath the existing MBTA Red Line Subway at South Station required excavation to depths in excess of 33.5 m (110 ft) through permeable sand and gravel subject to almost 27.4 m (90 ft) of hydrostatic groundwater pressure. As tacked drift tunnel underpinning system was designed to provide positive support to the active station prior to mainline tunnel construction. As part of this system, a permeation grouting program was developed to facilitate tunnel excavation. This paper describes the design and implementation of the grouting program, in sit testing, and the overall performance of the grouted soil mass.

The competitiveness of power production from lignite depends on the ability of coal industry to meet CO2 emissions limits, as specified by the Kyoto protocol. According to the National Allocation plan issued by EC, power plants should reduce CO2 emissions to a certain level, other-wise they will be obliged to cover the difference buying CO2 certificates through the Emission Trading Scheme. These charges will increase the operating cost of current units, as well as the investment cost for new units. To predict the increase in the marginal cost of electric power produced from the current plants of Western Macedonia, an emissions factor (CO2 t/MWh) for various units has been computed. Based on the algorithm used, this factor depends on the calorific value of the lignite, the efficiency of the power plant and the oxidation factor of the unit. For lignite plants with efficiency ~37%, CO2 emissions factor ranged from 1.19 t/MWh to 1.32 t/MWh. The increase in the marginal cost of kWh, as compared to the values of CO2 certificates, is higher in units fed with low quality lignite and worsens if the efficiency of the unit is low too. Also the presence of calcareous minerals in lignite increases the CO2 emissions and consequently the cost of power generation.

Kidston Gold Mines is a 14 000 tonnes per day rated operation located 280 kilometers west of Townsville in Queensland. The principle shareholder is Placer Development Limited. Kidston's orebody consists of 44.2 million tonnes graded at 1.79 g/t gold and 2.22 g/t silver. Production commenced in January, 1985, and despite a number of control, mechanical and electrical problems, each month has seen a steady improvement in plant performance to a current level of over ninety percent rated capacity.

Phosphate is one of the most important minerals in our world today. It contains the life-giving element of phosphorus, which is essential to the growth of every living cell in plant, animal, and man. This vital mineral is found in twenty-three states of the United States; however, for more than 70 years, Florida has led the nation in phosphate-production and now produces 70% of the requirements of this country. Since the early 1880% when rich phosphate deposits were accidentally discovered in a river-bed in Central Florida, the industry has developed into a multi-million-dollar operation. Phosphate mining began in Florida in 1887 with very crude methods and equipment. The original process was necessarily slow and tedious, resulting in total production of 3000 tons in 1888. Progress was made in improved mining operations, and by 1894. Florida had grabbed the lead as the nation?s largest phosphate-producing area, and is still in the top position.

Introduction Today, uranium is of great interest because of its application to nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan has been an important source of uranium for more than fifty years. All uranium products are exported. Results In Kazakhstan uranium exploration started in 1948 and developed in several parts of the country thru mining of hard rock deposits. There are known around 50 uranium deposits in six provinces: Shu-Sarysuyskaya (57%), North Kazakhstan (18%), Syrdaryinskaya (15%), Ilyiskaya (7%), Caspian (2%), Balkhash (1%). In the Northern Kazakhstan province, KazSabton took over Tselinny Mining & Chemical Co in 1999. In this province the stockwork is of Paleozoic and Paleozoic folded complexes origin. In the Balkash province some mining of volcanogenic deposits occurred during the Soviet era. This province’s stockwork is of Endogenous origin.In the Ili province uraniumis mainly found in uranium-coal deposits formed by oxidation of the lignite beds roofs. In the Caspian province the Prikaspisky Combine operated since the 1960s a major mining and processing complex on the Mangyshalk Peninsula. This led to the founding of Aktau. It was privatised as Kaskor in 1992 and operations ceased in 1994. The uranium occurrence is associated with the phosphorous from fossil fish bone detritus conglomeration. In the Chu-Sarysu province, which has more than half the country's known resources, both Stepnoye and Tsentralnoye have been operating since 1978 and 1982 respectively. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones. In the Syrdarya province slightly to the west of the province’s center the No.6 Mining group has been operating since 1985. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones.

An accurate, efficient and stable computation of the mill matrix function (eAt) is needed where mill matrix (A) is a real general matrix. Two important modeling cases in comminution where such need arises are: Heterogeneous comminution behavior of multi-component ores and ultra-fine grinding involving simultaneous attrition and fragmentation breakages. This paper presents the application of a novel splitting method in conjunction With similarity transformation technique in the form of "product formula" which is found to work in all cases and uses a most aggravating, yet interesting property of the matrix exponential in a restricted sense. Results are presented showing that this method can yield solution as accurate as those obtained With an analytical technique. The utility of this computational approach is demonstrated by parameter estimation analysis using a distributed component model in the liberation area through computer simulations.

Unfortunately from 1991 through 1995, 44 miners were fatally injured in the stone industry. Of these 12 occurred at underground mines from a total work force of less than 2,000 miners. Nine of these 12 miners were fatally injured in falls of roof or rib. A safer environment for the miners can be achieved by evaluating the nature of the hazardous ground and by developing more efficient and effective ground control strategies. Roof and rib conditions in the underground stone industry were observed and assessed at 33 mines in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia (Figure 1). Hazard assessment indicated that those ground failures occurring under moderate to substantial overburden ( > 30 m [100 ft]) were caused by stress concentrations and geologic structures. Ground failures near the surface are caused by solution (water) processes. Selection of the mining horizon and mine layout decisions tremendously influence ground stability.

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

Room-and-pillar mining at the Big Island Mine uses narrow, yield (i.e., load transferring) pillars to achieve high resource recovery and productivity. Two flat-lying 3- to 3fi-meter (10- to 11fi-ft) seams are mined. The interburden between the seams is about 10 meters (33 ft) and the cover depth is 250 to 330 meters (820 to 1,080 ft).Most of the mining has been single-seam, but two-seam mining will begin in the near future. Yield pillars minimize stress transfer between the seams. However, it is important that good long-term stability be maintained to prevent subsidence over a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. Three stress issues impacting stability are discussed in this paper: (1) higher-than-gravity vertical pre-mining stresses, (2) time-dependent stress transfer or arching, and (3) stresses induced by strata gas. Although the stress environment and behavior is not fully understood, steps have been taken in mine design and operations to minimize impacts to stability. Stress determinations have been very important to verify analytical predictions used in mine design and in long-term stability assessment.

The Amax Gold Guanaco mine is located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 260 km southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. The 6,000 tpd leach operation produces approximately 90,000 oz of gold, and 360,000 oz of silver per year. Production began in 1987, and the operation has been managed by Amax Gold since 1992. The mine has been plagued in the past by high operating costs and low production. Several significant changes have been made to the operations which have resulted in lower costs and higher operating efficiencies. A review of these changes is presented herein.

As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of U.S. coal mining companies are beginning to develop coal seams previously thought to be coo deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas contained in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep underground coal mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is used at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations must all be addressed in the design of longwall panels. This paper examines the influence of these factors, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, upon the feasibility of two, three, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. In general, it cannot be assumed that the strength of coal pillars remains constant over long time periods. Field observations indicate that a coal seam, especially when it contains a parting layer, deteriorates over time, reducing load-bearing capacity of the pillars. This paper discusses a unique approach to determine the time dependent strength of coal pillars in the field. Three coal pillars that were developed 5, 15 and 50 years ago were chosen for the study. Holes were drilled in coal and parting layers in each pillar and the strength profiles were determined for each hole using the Borehole Penetrometer. The strength data were treated statistically to establish time dependent strength equations for different layers. The results can be used to help estimate the loss of pillar capacity over time.

Mining in semi-arid climates can produce environmental impacts that will not begin for hundreds of years, but once started, may continue for thousands of years. Pit lakes may eventually exceed toxicity thresholds as metals are evaporatively concentrated, and slow unsaturated flow through acid-generating waste can eventually load several kg-SO4/m2-yr to underlying water tables. U.S. regulations are poorly equipped to respond to delayed and long-term environmental impacts, delaying permits as operators and regulators grapple with uncertainty. Improved uncertainty analysis, additional long-term mitigation options, and explicit regulatory guidance offer solutions to this dilemma.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

The "mass balance" is unquestionably the most common class of problems for the process engineer'. Closely related, mathematically, is the "heat balance". Every laboratory test requires a mass balance to describe the results. Mass balance calculations can be subdivided into several sub-categories based on whether the results are time dependant or not and depending on whether the input data are measurements that contain errors or are hypothetical values with no errors. Time dependent mass balances are dynamic process simulations and in addition to the conservation of mass constraints require kinetic data input. They are one step beyond simple mass balances.

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

6.1 INTRODUCTION The three most critical factors in successful heap leaching operations are: • The methods employed to pretreat ore (i.e, crushing and agglomeration); • Placement of ore on the leach pad (heap building techniques); and • Wetting of the ore with cyanide (solution application techniques). Improper execution of any of these initial steps may result in a substantial sacrifice of total metal extraction or, in the worst case, in project failure. Ore preparation in terms of crushing and agglomeration was discussed in Chapter 5; this chapter therefore focuses on commonly employed techniques for heap construction and solution application. The main objective of heap construction is to obtain the most homogeneous heap possible. "Channeling" of leachate in heaps with preferential seepage paths leads to preferential leachate distribution and uneven/incomplete extraction. The two main contributing causes of channeling are inadequate attention to heap construction and uneven solution application. These pitfall s can best be avoided through a knowledge of the various techniques available and the applicability and success of these techniques with various ore types and site conditions. The remainder of this chapter provides a discussion on these two subjects. 6.2 HEAP BUILDING TECHNIQUES Successful heap building techniques vary with the type of ore and, since no two orebodies are exactly alike, some slight modifications are usually necessary for each specific project. However, it is possible to generalize in terms of the appropriate techniques to be used with ores having similar characteristics. This section discusses the three most commonly used methods of heap construction and provides some guidelines with regard to ore types, construction constraints, and lift height parameters for each of the three. 6.2.1 Run-of-Mine Dumping and Dozing The run-of-mine method of heap building can only be used with ore of a highly silicious nature (i.e., ore which will not generate a large amount of
