OVERVIEW Like many older metropolitan areas across the U.S., the Greater Cleveland area is served by a combination of separate sanitary sewers and combined sanitary-stormwater sewers. In 1966, a Master Plan was implemented by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) to minimize pollutant overflows into adjoining Lake Erie and its tributary rivers and streams, that would occur during wet weather events. One component of the Master Plan was to reduce the load on combined sewers by constructing new conveyances to intercept separate sanitary flows and convey them to upgraded regional waste water treatment plants for priority treatment. As part of a 15-year program to construct 74 km (46 miles) of new interceptors, the West Leg Interceptor (WLI) Project intercepts flows from four decommissioned waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), and conveys those flows to the new Southwest Interceptor (SWI), which conveys the flows to the Southerly Treatment Plant, a tertiary level treatment facility. The WLI Project was built in sections to permit decommissioning of the WWTPs as each segment of the interceptor system was completed and put into service. Flows from the first of the four WWTPs was converted to the WLI in November, 1992; the final connection was achieved in July 1994. The WLI comprises 9.1 km (5.7 miles) of 21 to 29 m (70 to 95 ft) deep mainline interceptor tunnel, four vortex drop structures, approximately 2 km (1.3 miles) of shallow tunneled connector sewer to the mainline, approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of open cut connector sewers, five construction work shafts (not including one work shaft constructed under SWI Contract 6 at the north end of the WLI), and 15 access shafts.

"The “Reiche Zeche” mine in Freiberg, Germany, a 600-year-old lead-zinc-silver mine with extensive open mine workings, experiences severe ventilation losses due to leakage. Much air leaks into abandoned workings, decreasing the airflow available to active working areas. Usually, this leakage occurs in remote areas that lack transportation infrastructure like roadways or rail, making it difficult to haul construction materials to the sites to erect passive ventilation controls such as stoppings, regulators and seals. Transportation distances make it impractical to hand carry traditional construction materials, such as bricks and concrete. Alternative materials, such as brattice, foaming polymers, concrete canvas, and some innovative ventilation control designs have been investigated for this purpose. The suitability of the materials investigated depends on many factors including the pressure it can withstand, the ease of transportation, and workability. Impacts of mine water must be considered, as the Reiche Zeche is below drainage and experiences significant inflow of water. Researchers must consider the effects water inundation as well as how the stopping construction material reacts to being exposed to acidic mine water. INTRODUCTION Problem Statement Mining in the area around Freiberg, Germany began in the 12th century. The mine is used for research, mining engineering education, tourism and air conditioning for a local hospital. The first records of mining in the Reiche Zeche are from around 1384. Due to the strength and competency of the host rock, many of the oldest workings still stand and remain open today, although they may not be accessible. Reiche Zeche also connects to several other, closed mines in the area that are largely unmapped. This allows air to leak into neighboring mines, reducing the air available to ventilate to the working areas of Reiche Zeche. In order to improve ventilation efficiency, it is necessary to control the ventilation and reduce leakage by constructing seals, stoppings and regulators. A challenge with building traditional seals and stoppings in the Reiche Zeche is that the old workings lack transportation pathways or rails. Also, the lack of compressed air, water or electricity makes it difficult to operate power tools and drills. This means that construction materials must be hand carried – some over distances of several kilometers. Figure 1 shows a typical drift in the Reiche Zeche. Researchers investigated using lighter, more easily transportable materials including concrete canvas, expanding polyurethane and polyurea foams, and brattice. The applicability and utility of these materials depends on a variety of factors including the ventilation air pressure, chemical resistance to acidic and mineral-laden mine waters, ease of transport, and ease of construction. Stoppings and seals must be substantially constructed so that they remain tight and do not require maintenance. It is also important to consider the toxicity of the construction materials in case of a mine fire."

A study was undertaken to investigate the liberation behavior of coal macerals through size reduction and density separation. It was seen that the liberation of coal organic components could be achieved by size reduction, allowing selective separation of coal organic components. However, the degree of liberation is dependent on the history of coal: the extent of liberation decreased when the size of the primogeniture coal decreased. The liberation of coal macerals was analyzed by examining the Liberation Index. It was seen that although comminution produced fine particles enriched in inertinite (primarily fusinite and semifusinitie), these particles were less liberated than the coarser particles. However, the liberation of macerals increased when all the feed was ground to a finer size.

Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

Just prior to the close of the century, the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission issued its long-awaited decision in Berwind Natural Resources, et al v. Secretary of Labor, to usher in the new millennium. The case arose as a result of a mine explosion in Eastern Kentucky resulting in MSHA’s issuance of 225 citations, not only to the contractor, but to four affiliated entities of Berwind Corporation. While an Administrative Law Judge dismissed those citations as to three of the Berwind entities, both MSHA and the remaining Berwind entity appealed the case to the Commission. Although the Commission effectively left intact the Administrative Law Judge’s decision, it announced a new theory of liability that would apparently be applied in the future, namely the Unitary Operator Theory. This presentation will provide an in-depth look into the Berwind decision and explore the means under which MSHA might impose liability for contractor violations upon other entities in the future.

Sampling and geological models are the basis of recoverable resources models. They are pillars of mineral resources and reserves estimation, and what geostatistical methods for grade estimation should rely upon. The resource model is best estimated if geostatistical methods make good use of sound geologic models. Data collection from the original drill holes, including field procedures and the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of those samples are pillar one of a resource model. The second pillar of the model is the good use of the logged geological information, resulting robust geological interpretations, and the corresponding three-dimensional models of those interpretations. These models are partly subjective and mostly conditioned by the quality of logging and the geologist’s experience. They are also conditioned by the quality of the three-dimensional models built, regardless of the modeling method employed, traditional or implicit. Grade estimation is more commonly done by applying some geostatistical method and using the two basic sources of information, data and geologic model. Multiple stages are involved in this process, and in all of them there are uncertainties and risks that have to be dealt with. Knowledge, understanding, interpretation, and management of the model’s fundamentals are critical, given that they directly affect its accuracy and predictive quality. The mitigation of related risks allows for the creation of opportunities, generating value and reducing the project’s uncertainty. This paper discusses some of the key variables, uncertainties, and risks involved in the resource modeling process, illustrating with specific examples; discusses possible risk mitigation alternatives, and proposes best practices to avoid or mitigate those uncertainties. Emphasis is placed on taking advantage of technological advances without ignoring fundamentals. INTRODUCTION In the area of mineral resource estimation, one alarming trend that these authors have observed in the past 20 years or so is that the care and diligence in checking the work as it progresses has generally diminished. This is, perhaps, an unintended consequence of the availability of new technologies and tools that attempt simplify and speed up the work involved. This has led to a more casual attitude towards checks and balances that have to be in place at any given stage of the process before proceeding to subsequent stages, as best practices dictate. To some extent, some of these aspects are covered in international standards for resource estimates reporting (JORC, 2012; CIM, 2010). But these are broad, and do not specifically recommend best practices to a level of detail that would have an impact on certain aspects of the process. There are numerous references in the geology and mining journals and conferences that discuss the consequences of poor recoverable resource models (Baker and Giacomo, 1998; Vaughan, 1997).

This paper describes how a knowledge of inherent rock characteristics can aid the mining engineer in his design of a mining method for a massive domelike structure. The paper shows how the pertinent rock characteristics were measured and analyzed and how the data obtained was used for design purposes. This analysis was conducted in 1964 in a producing salt dome, since that time, mine management has tried certain of the recommendations for mine design changes. The results of such changes are presented.

In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.

The application of the QEM*SEM image acquisition and analysis system to the measurement of the mineral matter in coal and the materials in fly ash is described. A new sample mounting technique was developed using iodinated epoxy to provide a backscattered electron contrast between the coal, the mounting medium and the mineral matter. Several comprehensive and detailed species identification programs for silicate minerals and materials were developed to analyse the 1000 count x-ray spectra used for the measurements. Case studies are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the new technique to distinguish different coals and fly ashes by their mineral and material composition rather than by conventional chemical analysis. Applications of the new technique are aimed at demonstrating that composition and size distributions obtained from OEM*SEM measurements can be used: 1. to characterize coal with respect to combustion problems in power stations, 2. to characterize coal for fine coal cleaning, 3. to characterize fly ashes in relation to problems such as erosion in combustion systems and the ease of precipitability in dust collection facilities, 4. to refine the classification systems used in marketing coal for pulverized fuel firing and fly ashes as a component of cement and building materials.

The coal and gas outburst accident on May 20, 2007 at Sihe Coal Mine is unique in that there was no or very little soft coal in the coal seam and that the coal strength was very high. The outburst also showed that there was a very high gas content of 20-30 m3/t in the coal seam nearby the outburst site. Based on the field test and observations, together with laboratory experiments, detailed analysis was conducted on the controlling factors of coal and gas outburst potential at Sihe Coal Mine. Stress data available from Sihe Coal Mine, northern China, and other parts of the world, were also taken into account to facilitate the analysis. The results shows that the stress level was not abnormal compared to other coal fields in China prone to outbursts, and that gas contained in the coal seam was the main factor that triggered the outburst. All these factors were essentially controlled by the tectonic evolution features in Qinshui Coal Basin, to the Southeast of which Sihe coal field is located. Based on the analysis, assessment of coal seam outburst potential was carried out by measurements of coal seam gas contents, observation, and detection of soft coal layers in the coal seam. The results show that outbursts are limited to only a small part of the whole coal seam and that the eastern part of coal field is not prone to outbursts.

It is a great pleasure for me to speak-before such a prestigious group as the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The substance of my talk today is the handling of coal and petroleum coke: their characteristics and environmental problems, and how we were able to correct the problems, prescribe the cure and enjoy the benefits. When coke first became a by-product derived from the oil refineries everyone would have been very happy if someone had offered to take this pro- duct off their hands. Unfortunately, there was no market at that time, and no one seemed interested. Soon thereafter, it became a sellable product and began to be shipped to many countries in the world. This was when all of the pollution problems began. I will be talking briefly about some of these problems and showing a short film on this subject afterwards.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. The paper seeks to present the application of ground control research at Mosaboni Copper Mines to increase the size of stoping areas. Room and Pillar stopes were experimented for increased production dispensing with the conventional breast stoping. The experimental stopes, with spans varying from 10 to 15 m, were extensively instrumented to study the behaviour of wall rocks (chlorite schist) and to determine the optimum span in the workings, dipping at 25° to 45° and 3 to 5 m in height. The observations confirmed that 15 m wide span could be safely worked with 3 m wide rib pillars at 600 to 800 m depth by using rock bolts. Ground conditions improved with the use of full-column cement grouted bolts dispensing with timber supports and the productivity was improved.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

Topaz is a fluorine-bearing aluminosilicate mineral of the kyanite-sillimanite group. The formula has been given as Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, [Al(F, OH)]2SiO4, or 2Al2O3?2Al(F, OH)3SiO2. Topaz is generally considered a semiprecious-to-precious gem mineral, but it is a fairly common minor constituent of granites. In 1937 the U.s. Geological Survey reported an occurrence of massive topaz in the 3 Brewer gold mine, Chesterfield County, S.C. Over the next 8 years considerable research was done on topaz to establish its properties and to determine possible end uses The first reported shipment of ore was in 1939 Peak production was reached in 194412, and output then began declining until the mine closed in 194913? During World War II topaz was used in refractories, as a flux in steel mills, and in the manufacture of borosilicate glass 14. The main advantage of using topaz over kyanite and sillimanite in refractory use was that calcined topaz converted to over 95 percent mullite (3A1203 .2Si02) while calcined kyanite or sillimanite contained only 88 percent mullite15. However, a major draw-back to utilization of topaz is the evolution of fluorides during calcination. In 1973 the Geological Survey reported that topaz occurred in probable commercial quantities in at least two domestic locationsl6: the Brewer area of South Carolina and a location in Colorado. The literature also indicated that progress had been made in controlling fluorine-bearing fumes. This research has progressed to the state where valuable fluorine compounds are being recovered on a commercial scale 17. Thus, a major obstacle to utilization of topaz appears to have been resolved. The Bureau of Mines under its program of advancing minerals technology initiated a project to study techniques for the concentration of topaz from disseminated materials. The objective of the study was to determine those techniques that would be used to produce topaz concentrates that could be utilized as a source of fluorine and mullite.

In 1990, US mine production of barite increased 54.1 %. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 27.6%. Imports were about the same as 1989. World mine production in¬creased 12.3%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 12.7%, according to the Bureau. The declared value, cif US port, of all imported crude barite during the year 1990 increased from $40.27/t ($36.54 per st) in 1989 to $40.61/t ($36.84 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 82% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 750/c, of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This includes barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating, (1010), was 16.2% more than the 1989 average of 869 in the US.

Introduction Fire assaying is an ancient method of determining the amount of gold and silver in geological materials. Today's commercial, mining, school, and private fire assaying laboratories still use this basic assaying method. One of the primary reagents used to collect gold and silver from the ore is litharge (PbO), or lead oxide. The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) and the Nevada Division of Occupational Safety and Health's (OSH) have a lead standard. It states that a person exposed to airborne lead at concentrations greater than 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) of air over an eight-hour period has gone beyond the permissible limit for health safety. It is not uncommon to get airborne lead concentrations of 1400 µg/m3 (40 µg per cu ft) in the flux/sampling area or 900 µg/m3 (25 µg per cu ft) around the gas/ electric furnaces during the fusion and cupelling phases. Therefore, any individual working in these areas for more than 30 days per year without proper protection is a likely candidate for lead poisoning. Lead In A Human Lead enters the body as a toxic substance by breathing it into the lungs and upper respiratory tract and by getting lead particles into the digestive system through ingestion. Smoking, eating, drinking, chewing tobacco and gum, or wiping a lead-contaminated hand across the mouth are all potential ways forgetting lead into the body. Lead taken in large quantities can actually kill a person in a matter of days. This is rare, however. The real hazard of lead overexposure is for the unsuspecting person who works in an unsafe lead environment for months or years. This individual can slowly receive damage, sometimes permanent, to the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, blood, gums, and reproductive system. Safe Blood-Lead Level The Lead Standard states that the maximum safe blood-lead level is 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) of whole blood. It recommends 30 µg/100 g (30 µg per 3.5 oz) if a person is of child-bearing age. People not working around lead products normally have a blood level of less than 10 µg/100 g (10 µg per 3.5 oz). A person not adequately protected can exceed 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) in a few weeks by fire assaying only 100 samples per day per week. Studies show that some individuals have developed lead-related diseases with blood-lead levels less than 80 µg/m3 (2.3 µg per cu ft). Lead Poisoning Symptoms There is a long list of symptoms associated with lead poisoning. The most common are: a prolonged, sweet, metallic taste in the mouth; loss of appetite; anxiety and irritability; weakness and dizziness; nausea and tremors; and insomnia. Preventive Measures Based on the lead standard, a number of preventive measures can be taken to ensure that fire assay laboratory personnel frequently exposed to lead are protected against overexposure. First, the actual lead concentration within the assaying area should be determined. In Nevada, one can contact the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health for assistance in monitoring any laboratory. The agency will also recommend ways to protect against lead. This agency does the monitoring and provides an educational class on lead safety. This type of agency can be found in other states. Commercial consulting firms are also available, but they are expensive. Man's use of 'glass predates recorded history. Although early man had no knowledge of how to form glass, artifacts have been found near naturally occurring glass formations where molten rock had been rapidly cooled. In areas where volcanic activity is evident, primitive people fortunate enough to have lived in that area used the naturally formed glass to make arrow heads, knife blades, tools and ornaments. These glass artifacts have been found all over the world. In fact in todays modern society there are recorded cases of aboriginal tribesmen in Australia fabricating arrowheads from glass bottles. 2. A Brief History of Glass The first evidence of man made glass were beads made around 2500 BC by the Egyptians. The Mesopotamians also made glass beads at about the same time.
