The Cliffs and Associates Limited (CAL) 500,000 tpy HBI plant located in Trinidad was commissioned after modifications in early 2001. This plant employs the novel Lurgi Circored® process to reduce iron ore fines using a combination of circulating fluidized bed and conventional fluidized bed reactors in a hydrogen based. This paper will review the advantages offered by working in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Circored® processes, and plant start-up experience.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. Open-type, or main beam, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can achieve impressive rates of production. This type of TBM typically outperforms other types of TBMs currently in use around the world. In good ground conditions, main beam machines have achieved production rates of more than 1 km/month (0.6 miles/month). However, installing effective ground support in poorer rock conditions on main beam machines can be a major cause of concern. The design of main beam machines is such that installation of ground support equipment, particularly at the front of the machine in what is commonly known as the L1 support zone, has traditionally been limited to rock drills and basic working platforms. Personnel working in the L1 zone have, until recently, been protected by roof supports and extended fingers, often with restricted access to working areas.

Much has been said and written about the world's, and particularly the united states of America's, energy crisis. The relative changes between cost components of production have altered because the days of cheap energy have now gone. Decisions that made capital investment reduction attractive to treat large tonnage lower grade ore bodies appear to be no longer valid because average energy costs for comminution that were less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour in 1972, are now more than 3 cents and will shortly become 6 cents according to some projections. Increased capital investment to improve processing energy efficiencies are certainly going to be pursued. Energy today is the largest cost component in the average mineral production facility. It takes more than 12000 kilowatt hours to produce one ton of finished steel and more than 60000 kilowatt hours for each ton of copper and aluminum.

The environmental liabilities of coal waste disposal sites can have a major impact on a mining project's economic viability. Developing a waste disposal site is no longer simply an exercise in completing paperwork to obtain a permit, with the proliferation of environmental regulations in recent years, managing disposal sites now requires design creativity, short term and long term planning and detailed monitoring to maximize the benefits to the mining company. Operating costs and future capital costs for expansion of existing sites, new site development and regulatory compliance should be reviewed periodically and considered in the overall management plan. This paper discusses various management methods that are being employed in the industry to improve waste disposal operations both environmentally and profitably.

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

INTRODUCTION The plate loading test is a simple, useful tool in rock mechanics. The test consists of applying load to a rock surface and noting the resulting deflections. Plate loading tests are typically used to obtain modulus of deformation and related material properties, but can also provide information on blast damage and in situ stresses (1). Properties obtained are of course dependent on test procedure and test environment . In order to eliminate extraneous results it is essential that the interrelationship between the physical test environment and various rock properties obtained be thoroughly understood. Test interpretation is based upon elasticity methods, and the general assumptions made during analysis which include the following: 1. The rock is homogeneous, isotropic, elastic and continuous. 2. The stress is induced in a semi-infinite solid. 3. The plate is perfectly rigid or completely flexible. 4. Rock properties are independent of in situ stresses. 5. The plate and rock surface are smooth and parallel.

The formation in Newmont Mining?s Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, NV contains high levels of abrasive quartzite as well as gold, copper and silver. Newmont started mining operations at Phoenix (formerly Battle Mountain Gold) three years ago and the planners knew they were working with a challenging geological formation. But as it turned out, it was more challenging than anticipated. Mine manager Mark Evatz said, ?Anything that touches Phoenix rock wears fast. The rock fights back here.? To contend with the hard conditions, Newmont uses Atlas Copco?s Pit Viper 271 (PV-271) blasthole drill. Because of the hardness of the rock, drilling at Phoenix requires hammer drilling and the mine uses Atlas Copco TD65 hammers with 171 mm (6.75 in.) bits. The mine?s PV-271?s are outfitted with a single 41 m3/min (1450 cfm), 2.4 MPa (350 psi), oil-flooded air compressor. Phoenix has six Atlas Copco PV-271 drill rigs plus an Atlas Copco DML and a DM45 midrange blasthole rig. The mine?s goal is to keep 3.6 Mt (4 million st) of muck in inventory to stay ahead of the shovels and support needed operational flexibility (ore control related). Drilling efficiency has been a continuous point of improvement since operations began at the mine. The single-pass depth capability of 16.5 m (55 ft) on the PV-271 helped with that. Originally, the plans called for 6-m (20-ft) bench heights, supported by 7-m (23-ft) drill depths, and time spent moving from hole to hole was eating up productivity. Drilling on that plan resulted in drilling an average of 14 m/h (47 ft/hour). When depths were changed to 13-m (44-ft) drill depth, supporting blasting of 12-m (40-ft) benches, they were able to use the single pass capacity of the PV-271. Performance increased to more than 18 m/h (60-ft/hour) an hour. Although the drill depth change largely supported the improvement, other aspects of continuous improvement associated with improved knowledge of the Pit Viper drills helped as well.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Roof Control Division (RCD) collects a variety of geological and engineering information pertaining to mining conditions in surface and underground mines throughout the United States. Recently, lineament analyses, trends of geologic structures, and inferred stress directions based on mapping at mines with problematic ground conditions, have been integrated into a GIS. The incorporation of different kinds of information into the same geographic coordinates and map projection, placed on digital geologic maps, allows site specific data to be evaluated in a regional geospatial context, identifying trends in the orientation of horizontal stress or patterns of structural geologic features. As more information is collected, the GIS will evolve as a tool for district- and basin-wide evaluations of controls on ground instability, and may evolve into a predictive tool for some kinds of geologic hazards. In addition to the geologic and geotechnical evaluations, the GIS also serves as a searchable database of previous mine investigations. The database can be searched for a variety of criteria, and the results displayed in real geographic coordinates to find the locations of previously visited mines or to evaluate mine fatality and injury data. This not only allows old reports to be found, but also places the information in a geospatial context with respect to neighboring mines or geographic areas. The GIS also has the capability to serve as a digital mine map repository, where maps can be stored in digital, georeferenced format for display in relation to each other and various themes of interest. This allows evaluation of multiple seam mining interactions and proximity to other mines, and on a national level could serve as an abandoned mine map database.

"INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is the nation’s first underground geologic repository for transuranic (TRU) and TRU-mixed waste (see Figure 1). The WIPP facility was opened for operation in 1999 when the first TRU waste shipment arrived at the WIPP facility for disposal.WIPP facility does not employ typical production aspects of a conventional mine. Instead, the mining focus is on the quality of the excavation to ensure safe disposal of TRU and TRU-mixed waste (Walls, 1991). GEOLOGY WIPP underground repository is mined within a 2,000 feet-thick bedded-halite formation (Salado Formation) (see Figure 2). The WIPP underground repository is located approximately 2,150 feet beneath the surface near the center of the Salado Formation. Geologic criterion and site-selection factors evaluated for the selection of the repository included topography, depth, thickness, lateral extent, lithology, stratigraphy, structure, erosion, dissolution, subsidence, surface water, aquifers, hydrologic transport, climatic fluctuations, manmade penetrations (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980).FACILITY DESIGN Profit did not play a major role in the WIPP’s conception like in a conventional mine. This was due to the extensive amount of additional regulations and safety controls that had to be built into the WIPP facility. Since it is nuclear and hazardous waste disposal facility, it must meet certain federal and state requirements for TRU-mixed waste. One of the major regulatory drivers for the WIPP facility is defined in the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act (LWA). One of the requirements in the WIPP LWA requires the DOE to submit documentation of continued compliance with Title 40 CFR Part 191, Subparts B, and C. These standards are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DOE must submit documentation of continued compliance (recertification) with these regulations every five years. In addition to the LWA, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is another major regulatory driver for the WIPP facility. Since the WIPP facility is categorized as a “Miscellaneous Unit” under 40 CFR, it must meet extensive environmental performance standards. These standards are defined in the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP). The HWFP defines the terms and conditions that the Secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department has determined necessary to protect human health and the environment (U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, 2015)."

The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We'll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future

The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

The Blue Ridge Low Level Outlet (LLO) was a design/build contract to provide a secondary means of discharging water from the Blue Ridge Reservoir. The project involved driving a 3.25 m (11 ft) modified horseshoe tunnel by 293.5 m (963 ft) long utilizing conventional drill and blast methodology. The intake shaft and structure were constructed inside of a sheet pile cofferdam surrounded by a maximum of 20.1 m (66 ft) of water. The shaft was excavated 4.87 m(16 ft) diameter to a depth of 12.8 m (42 ft) below the tremie slab elevation. Steel lining, including a transition from 3.66 m to 2.74 m (12 to 9 ft) diameter and a90 degree elbow were installed in the inlet shaft and then backfilled with concrete. This paper will describe the RFP phase, the design phase, challenges of the underground construction and contractual challenges.

"Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. Over the years, the coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research discussed in this paper investigates one potential solution - or component of a solution - to improve the sustainability of surface coal mining in West Virginia: post-mining wind power. The paper begins with an introduction to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and the role that mining has played in its history, followed by a discussion of the need for sustainable mining and how post-mining wind power may help fulfill it. Data processing methodology of field data from monitoring locations is then explained. The results are then used to estimate the electrical output of a wind turbine. This data is then utilized in a case study discussion of one of the monitored sites. The paper concludes with an analysis of the broader implications of the research and a discussion of future work."

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Partners In Economic Reform, Inc., established a Polish-American Mine Center in Katowice, Poland, in 1996 to improve working conditions in the minerals industry. The program was based on the experience of mining companies, government, and labor in the United States, and was executed by a Coordinating Committee headed by the Center Director and Polish leaders from industry, State, labor, and academia. The cooperation among all parties has enabled safety and health issues to become part of industry restructuring with impressive initial reductions in coal mine fatalities. Existing work practices and attitudes of labor and management were assessed in coal mines throughout the country. Promotion, Rules, and Job and Task Analysis were identified as the areas requiring the most improvement, and are part of a post-graduate Safety Management program. Demonstration projects included measuring dust levels, using safety glasses, and promoting hazard awareness. Improved labor-management relations increased cooperation allowing for effective transfer of technology. Results can also be applied to improve the working environment of the manufacturing sector also undergoing restructuring.

Anthracite preparation developments, particularly in the early days of the anthracite industry, formed the basis for the modern coal preparation plants that have become so essential to the coal industry today. The anthracite industry, from early in the 19th century until relatively recently, was a leader in mining, preparation and marketing of coal, and played a leading role in the development of the industrial America we know today. Anthracite was discovered in America in about 1760--the story of Necho Allen is well known--but the rediscoveries leading to mining operations took place about 50 years later. The Wurtz brothers in 1815 at Scranton, the Smith brothers at Wilkes-Barre in 1807, Beach in Hazleton in about 1814, and Boyd in 1816 at Shamokin were all instrumental in promoting early mining and marketing of anthracite (J3. The early canals and railroads were built for the specific purpose of moving anthracite to the market areas. Eventually, the industry grew until, in 1917, it reached a production zenith of a little over 100,000,000 tons, representing about 20 percent of the total coal output in the United States. Almost half of the anthracite produced that year was consumed for domestic heating, a utilization that had dominated the industry for almost 100 years. Initially, anthracite had to be used by gunsmiths and blacksmiths, after which had followed the consumption of extensive quantities for railroads, blast furnaces and foundries, and electric power generation. Most of the markets have been lost to coke, oil, and natural gas. Near the anthracite regions, however, significant quantities are still used for domestic heating, power generation, carbon black manufacture, blending with bituminous coal to make metallurgical coke and fuel, and for other industrial purposes. Thus, anthracite production has not been entirely committed to history, but remains an active industry that follows modern practices in the mining, preparation, shipping, and utilization of a fuel that is still a valuable adjunct to the national economy. In fact, its inherent low sulfur content may make it an important fuel of the future. Estimates indicate there are reserves of anthracite to last for 300 years at a consumption rate of 50,000,000 tons/year. Anthracite Preparation Yesterday A 170-year history of the anthracite industry obviously is not the purpose of this discussion. A complete history of anthracite preparation, the rather unglamorous step in the processing of "mine run" hard coal to make it suitable for the user, is also not practical. Hence, the purpose of this report is to trace the development of some of the most important processes used through the years to meet a part of the demand for energy developed by our modern society. Anthracite preparation in the early days of the industry consisted solely of separating slate from the coal, by hand, underground (Z). This method prevailed for almost 20 years until wrought iron hand rakes were introduced to separate the large and small sizes. Shortly thereafter, the first attempts were made to size and clean the coal aboveground. The coal was dumped on a perforated cast iron plate, and men used sledge hammers to break the larger pieces into smaller sizes suitable for the market. The smallest sizes--that is, the material that went through the plate--were thrown away because they had no value at that time--a concept that existed for many years and actually was the basis for the subsequent "river" coal production and the many silt banks which are landmarks in the anthracite region. The larger sizes, at that time, sold for 50 cents per ton. The Batten breaker, or roll crusher, was invented in 1844, followed soon thereafter by the Snell-Diehm breaker (A). The latter had disadvantages, including excessive waste and fixed product size, but it later was improved in these respects. A breaker was also developed at Minersville, Pa., at about the same time that processed 200 tons of coal per day, using roll crushers and circular screens (1). Handpicking, from the beginning of anthracite preparation, was an important part of the cleaning process and was still being practiced as late as 1950. It was this process that involved the "breaker" boys of coal region lore. How much good handpicking accomplished depended on how much impurity was present in the coal--the more the impurities, the greater the reduction in ash. Thus, high-impurity streams were significantly improved, whereas picking of relatively clean coal was mainly to show an effort to make a quality product. As indicated, picking is largely a visual operation. It was and is wasteful of coal in the larger sizes since some good coal is always associated with the bad. However, it was probably much more effective' in the larger than the smaller sizes.
