Based on resource studies in many developing countries, four categories of industrial clay resources are recognized as precursors to development strategies. Category I: High quality, high technology clays requiring major investment for large tonnage international markets. Category 2: Unique specialty clays requiring advanced technologies for small tonnage niche markets. Category 3: Lower technology, moderate quality clays, predominantly to supply local markets. Category 4: Low quality clays requiring little or no processing. Projects with Categories 1 and 2 clays require extended development times (green field to investment decisions) with significant pre-development investment, while projects with Categories 3 and 4 clays require shorter development timetables and lower levels of investment.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Highly delaminated muscovite mica products (WG-1 and WG-2) have been developed by J.M. Huber Corp. The micas are characterized as a 325-mesh product having high brightness and very narrow particle size distribution. At 40% loading in polypropylene, WG-1 mica provides substantial improvement in tensile modulus and equal tensile strength to unfilled polymer; in high-density poly- ethylene (HDPE), WG-1 provides four times the tensile modulus and a 50% increase in tensile strength over unfilled polymer. Surface modification of the water-ground mica (SM ™) provides substantial improvement in tensile strength over untreated mica at greater than 20% loading in polypropylene; in HDPE, tensile strength is twice that of unfilled polymer.

The MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project includes three main work shafts, excavated primarily in rock. Shaft L is 9.8 m (32 ft) diameter and 124.1 m (407 ft)deep. Shaft E is 7.0 by 12.8 m (23 by 42 ft) and 91.4 m (300 ft) deep. Shaft 5A is 7.9m (26 ft) diameter and 72.5 m (238 ft) deep. Construction methods are compared and contrasted. Lessons learned involve a differing site condition in soil overburden, contractor-proposed modifications, and remedial slurry wall work. Other aspects discussed include noise and vibration control, groundwater inflow, water treatment, muck handling and contract administration issues.

A new method developed for the estimation of the activity of Ht in mixed sulfate solutions is described and examples of application of this method to the system H2SO4-ZnSO4-FeSO4-Fe2(SO4)3 from 298 to 473 K are offered. The method makes use of an "extended Debye-Hiickel" type of equation that was originally put forth by Das for pure H2SO4 solutions at ambient temperature. The treatment of mixed sulfate solutions was made possible by combining that equation of Das with a speciation algorithm which calculates the abundance of all species formed. The developed method, which also takes into account ionic strength and temperature effects, was used to generate hydrogen ion activity and speciation data for all possible acid/metal sulfate pairs of the system H2SO4-ZnSO4-FeSO4-Fe2(SO4)3. Finally, under the light of the reported data, specific examples of hydrometallurgical reaction systems are analyzed in terms of thermodynamics or kinetics. In particular, the systems discussed are: hydrometallurgical precipitation of hematite, solvent extraction of Fe(III), acid leaching of zinc ferrite, and oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) by O2(aq).

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) and Associated Works will be the seventhland crossing between Shenzhen and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.The project includes site formation of about 23 hectares of land for the development of the BCP and anapproximately 11-kilometre (km) long dual two-lane trunk road (the “Connecting Road”), connecting theBCP with the existing Fanling Highway. The route alignment is within a relatively rural area of HongKong, with very limited similar infrastructure works carried out nearby. It passes beneath bothmountainous terrain, and alluvial plains, and falls within an area of several major regional faults andassociated metamorphism, resulting in a complex variety of ground conditions.ALIGNMENTThe Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region carried out extensive public engagement in selecting the alignment of theConnecting Road. Over 70 consultation forums with public bodies, including the District Councils, RuralCommittees, local representatives, etc. were held during the alignment design process. In order toalleviate the concerns of various nearby villages, and to minimize land clearance and environmentalproblems, the original alignment of 10 km long (3.5 km of tunnels and 6.5 km of viaducts) was revised toits final alignment of 11 km long which comprises 5.7 km of tunnels, 4.3 km of viaducts and 1.0 km of atgrade roads.The finally adopted alignment commences at the southern end with an interchange with the existingFanling Highway, part of Route 9, which is a dual three lane expressway currently being widened to dual4 lane. Alongside the expressway is the main rail connection to the mainland of China, and theinterchange viaducts connecting to the southern portal of the Lung Shan tunnel must cross over thisrailway. The southern portal is located in the foothills of Lung Shan, and the 4.8km long tunnel is alignedin a north-northeasterly direction. The southern half passes under mountainous terrain of Lung Shan,and then crosses a valley containing the Kwan Tei river. The northern section comprises low hillsseparated by an alluvial plain and Tan Chuk Hang village area. At the northern end, the tunnel turns tothe north-west to connect with Sha Tau Kok road, an existing single carriageway road, with a newroundabout interchange. Mid-way along this tunnel there will be a ventilation building, connected to the main tunnel by a 330m long ventilation adit. To the north-western side of this interchange is the900m long Cheung Shan tunnel, and after this the remaining 4.3km of the highway connecting with theBoundary Control Point is to be constructed as an elevated viaduct. "In this study, the studies to develop a flowsheet for a low grade chromite ore are presented. The existing concentrator had to be suspended due to the decreasing metal prices. The study commenced with mineralogy and liberation profile of the chromite. The valuable mineral is chromite and the major gangue mineral is forsterite together with small amount of brucite and calcite. Heavy liquid tests were performed on different size fractions without any acceptable success. The concentration tests were performed using teetered bed separator (TBS) +shaking table, spiral concentrator+TBS+shaking table for different grind size. Based on the test results, 100% finer than 0.4mm was found to be optimum for grind size. Comparison of alternative circuits showed that the performance of both alternatives would be similar. A flowsheet was designed and operated for as 25 tph trial circuit in the existing plant. The results showed that the performance of the plant predicted was very close to the actual plant data. The paper describes the methodology used, presents the experimental data and actual performance figures.INTRODUCTION Turkey is one of the largest chromite producers in the world. Since 1850, chromite mining found industrial applications and geographically spread along six different regions in Turkey. Although the reserves in these locations are not as rich as the big producers, they are regarded as very valuable due to Cr/Fe ratio in terms of chromite utilization standards (1, 2). In this period, significant portion of high grade (=35% Cr2O3), directly marketable ore deposits have already been produced. According to General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (Turkey) data; 83% of the known chromite deposits of Turkey which makes 242 341 000 tons in total, is consisting from the deposits those have a Cr2O3 grade lower than 10%. Only 5% of the known deposits (13 087 000 tons) has a grade of directly saleable (2, 3). Gravity concentration methods are well-known processes for chromite beneficiation and there are plenty of plants in the world and Turkey using these methods. As different equipment combinations can be used for the same enrichment method, different methods can also be used in combination for plant designs (4). Beneficiation of low grade and problematic chromite ores may lead to use these method and equipment combinations (5, 6). Ore liberation, the grades of Al2O3, SiO2, FeO and Cr2O3 in the obtained concentrate, Cr/Fe ratio, some physical and chemical properties between gangue and minerals (i.e. specific gravity, magnetic property, color, etc.) designate the selection and combination of these methods and equipment (7)."

Changes in the thermal-oxidation behavior and other properties of gold-bearing waste activated carbon when milled in both a ball mill and a vibratory mill were investigated. It was found that significant changes occurred in the oxidation temperature of the vibration-milled waste carbon as a result of increases in surface area and mechano-chemical activation. The mechano-chemical action brought about modifications in the crystal structure of the waste carbon. As a result, the vibration-milled sample was completely oxidized at a temperature of 450°C. Thus, the study established that vibration milling is a better way of lowering the temperature of oxidation of the waste carbon. Furthermore, the gold was found to be concentrated in the ash and, when leached with cyanide for 20 hrs, the gold recoveries from a sample having a head grade of 2 kg/t was 99.5% for the vibration-milled sample and 82% for the ball-milled sample. The lower gold recovery for the ball-milled sample was attributed to sintering of the ash, which was caused by the higher temperature required for its oxidation.

This paper is not focused on the project itself, however, the emphasis is on experiences gained from the project. Working with junior mining companies as a valuer, my experience with regulators is that simplicity works and the sales comparison method is the way to go. What I like about Mr. Ellis?s approach (as in his Table 7) is the integration of commodity prices with the timing of acquisitions and the implication of price changes in gold on the adjustment of individual project valuations. However, the sample gold-related appraisals in Ellis?s paper are pre-2008 transactions and readers should be made aware of the current market for such projects. Before moving on, to be noted is that the effective date of the Las Brisas appraisal (Ellis?s sample Appraisal 3) is Feb. 10, 2006; given that the subject value of Transaction 9, Choco 10 in Ellis?s Table 6 was listed as $353 million for a 95% interest in the con-cession, I am uncomfortable accepting that the acquisition was suddenly worth the adjusted value of $1,205 million (as given in Ellis?s Table 7). In some cases, illiquidity discounts can apply, and commodity-wise, in the one-month period between the acquisition in January 2006 and the adjustment to the Las Brisas conditions as of February 10, 2006, the indicated gold price change was only 41 cents/g ($12.60/oz); i.e., from $17.50/g to $17.91/g ($544.40/oz to $557/oz).

There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn't make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here's why: • 20% of today's high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today's fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today's sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I'm talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today's graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

"Diesel exhaust is a major cause of large number of occupational diseases. Acute and continuous exposure to Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) can cause numerous health issues including respiratory disease, reduced lung capacity, heart disease etc. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) consider diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic. In large underground metal and nonmetal mining operations, regulatory compliance regarding miner’s exposure to airborne particles especially DPM is a big challenge. Complex mine networks add more difficulties in controlling DPM. MSHA relies on the NIOSH 5040 method for DPM compliance. The NIOSH 5040 method is a shift average based method which inherits some limitations. Due to these inherent limitations of the NIOSH 5040 method the concept of real-time DPM monitoring is promoted in the mining industry. Several real-time DPM monitors have been used by the researchers and efforts still continues to improve their measuring techniques and understanding. Real-time monitoring of DPM is vital to gain understanding of rapid changes in the mine atmosphere. The current study highlights the advancement in real-time DPM monitoring and mainly covers a review of several studies in which DPM concentrations were measured by utilizing real-time DPM monitors. INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground mines is an important aspect of mining operations. Mining is a continuous activity and the ventilation networks in modern mines change with extended developments. Proper understanding of the ventilation network is a key design factor of an optimum mine ventilation plan. An important task of underground mine ventilation engineers is to provide clean air with sufficient quantity to the underground miners (Khan M. U. and Gillies A.D.S. 2015). The amount of fresh air supplied to the mine should be adequate to dilute the concentrations of contaminants present in the mine atmosphere. In the United States it is estimated that diesel powered equipment is used in thousands of mining operations (Stephenson D. J. et al. 2006). Use of diesel powered equipment is an attractive option in underground mines due to its several advantages over other available alternates. Diesel engines are rugged, dependable and fuel efficient (McKinnon 1999). It is common for diesel engines in heavy duty trucks to have a life of 1.6 million kilometers (McKinnon 1999). Looking at the developments in other energy alternatives, it can be assumed that the underground mining industry will maintain its reliance on diesel powered equipment (Anon 2001). DPM is an important source of mine air contamination in many non-gassy underground mines (Khan M. U. and Gillies A.D.S. 2015). Diesel exhaust is harmful for humans. Acute and continuous exposure to diesel exhaust concentrations can cause several health issues. Some of the health diseases caused by DPM exposure are respiratory diseases, reduced lung capacity, heart disease, and lung cancer (National Research Council. 1981, Mine Safety. 2005). In addition, NIOSH regards diesel exhaust as “potential carcinogen” (Centers for Disease Control 1988) and IARC has declared that “diesel engine exhaust is carcinogenic to humans” (IARC 2012). NIOSH has also declared that the reductions in DPM exposure would reduce cancer risks (Centers for Disease Control 1988)."

A form of column flotation cell is described in which the contact between the feed and the air stream is made in a mixing device at the top of a vertical downcomer. The air-liquid mixture flows downward to discharge into a shallow pool of pulp in the bottom of a short cylindrical column. The bubbles disengage and rise to the top of the column to overflow into a concentrate launder, while the tails are discharged from the bottom of the vessel. The main advantages of the device described are that the overall height of the column is reduced to about 1 m (3 ft), and the column can be self-inducing with respect to the air supply. Experimental results are given from tests on a feed stream to a conventional zinc cleaner circuit. Using wash water to reduce gangue entrainment, the column gave high concentrate grades and high recoveries.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a image analysis methodology to correlate the energy consumed during the grinding of an ore to the mineral liberation achieved. Energy consumption values are obtained using a laboratory-scale ball mill equipped with a torque sensor, and an automated image analyzer is used to determine the liberation present in ground products. By combining liberation information with energy consumption data an appraisal can be made of the energy required to liberate the mineral(s) of interest. Results of tests performed on a complex sulfide material determined the effects of grind duration on the liberation achieved and the energy efficiency.

The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. The present study, therefore, describes the reduction, with hydrogen and carbon monoxide, of molybdenum in the hexavalent state in alkaline aqueous solutions containing sulphide ion. In these

Many factors -- political, environmental and technological -- will determine the extent to which the United States realizes the potential of its vast coal resources. Not the least of these factors is technogical development including mining, processing and transportation. With regard to processing technology, about 50% of the 800x106 tons of coal mined annually in the U.S. is processed in preparation plants. The purpose of the physical separations accomplished in these preparation plants is to remove ash (present as clays and other oxide minerals) and sulfur 'present mostly as pyrite). Coal flotation circuits for such separations are becoming more important in the processing of minus 28 mesh coal. (1,2,3) For example in the U.S. in 1960, 31 flotation plants processed 26,500 tpd; whereas in 1980, there were 80 flotation plants which processed 78,300 tpd. This corresponds to an annual growth in flotation plant capacity of 10 per year during the past two decades. Coal flotation is based on the natural or induced hydrophobicity of coal particles which are separated from hydrophilic ash and sulfur constituents by attachment to air bubbles. The coal particle/air bubble aggregates are collected in a froth phase which is created by the addition of a suitable frother such as MISC. Without exception, such separations are made in a conventional flotation cell, which, in essence, is a stirred tank reactor with a shrouded rotor to shear the air as it passes through a hollow shaft. The dispersed air bubbles (4.0 mm diameter) are stabilized by addition of the frother. Collision of the air bubbles with, and/or precipitation of the air bubbles on, the coal particles results in the formation of coal particle/air bubble aggregates which rise in the gravitational field and are collected in the froth phase developed at the top of the flotation cell. Restraints on successful separation by this conventional flotation technique are particle size and retention time. Generally it is found that effective flotation is only achieved for particle sizes between 10 and 1000 microns. Further, with respect to retention time, it is found that a nominal retention time of at least 2 minutes is required for successful separations. These facts limit the effectiveness of conventional coal flotation. Coal fines may be lost in the reject stream and disposal is frequently a problem. The retention time required for conventional flotation results in large floor space demands which limit the capacity of the plant.

Significant changes in ownership and production of industrial clays have occurred since 2000. Clays covered in this presentation are kaolins, ball clays, smectites, (bentonite), and palygorskite (attapulgite)-sepiolite. IMERYS discontinued production of paper coating kaolins at their Cornwall operations and have expanded their kaolin production in Brazil. J. M. Huber sold their kaolin operation in Georgia to KaMin whose headquarters are in Ft. Worth, Texas. BASF purchased Engelhard?s kaolin and attapulgite operations in Georgia. ActiveMinerals purchased Southeastern Kaolin in South Carolina, Wilkinson County Kaolin in Gordon, Georgia, and Zemex Attapulgite in Quincy, Florida. Chemical Lime purchased Spinks Ball Clay Company in Paris, Tennessee. Most of the ball clays used in Italy and Eastern Europe comes from expanded operations in the Ukraine. Bentonite operations have expanded production in Wyoming and Montana because of strong demand for drilling mud, foundries, cat litter, and iron ore pelletizing. The production and exports of palygorskite in China continues to increase. Nanoclays utilizing sodium montmorillonite, palygorskite, and halloysite are actively being developed.

On April 30, 2003, representatives of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.(SME) met with the staff of the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The meeting was held to discuss issues related to the estimation and publication of mineral resources and ore reserves. It took place in the Washington, D.C. offices of the SEC. SEC staff members included Roger Schwall, assistant director, Division of Corporation Finance; Jill Davis, senior accountant; Roger Baer, senior mining engineer; Carl Chavez, chief mining engineer; Ron Winfrey, senior petroleum engineer; and John Murphy, senior petroleum engineer. SME committee members included JM Rendu, independent consultant and chairman of the SME Committee on Resources and Reserves; Ian Douglas, manager of deposit modeling and reserve estimation with Newmont Mining; Art Graham, director and mining engineer with Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas; Larry Smith, chief geologist with AMEC Mining and Metals Consulting; and George MacDonald, vice president of exploration with Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold.
