We have worked on several flooded pits from coal-mining activities in the former East Germany, as well as ones associated with hard- rock mining, including the B-zone pit discussed in the above technical paper. We found the paper to be a useful summary, but, unfortunately, it failed to give an adequate comparison of the physical limnology of the flooded pits, which is an essential component. While the title suggests that the primary focus of the review is physical limnology, it appears that it is essentially pit-lake chemistry being presented. Physical limnology requires that factors such as fetch, latitude, light penetration, relation to ground water table, methods of flooding and the physical shape of the pits be defined. These physical aspects of a pit interact with the chemical and biological processes taking place in it, all of which contribute to the character of a water body. Few of these physical aspects are presented, however. The conclusion that the authors reach suggests that meromixis may be a condition that would serve as an effective containment mechanism for contaminants in a pit. Although this may be desirable, such limnological conditions are not clearly supported by the data presented for any of the pits. These data should be summarized to facilitate comparison between the same structural units of the pit water - the epi- and metalimnion for example. The thermocline depth is a reflection of the physical forces mixing the water body, and pit dimensions affect these forces. Due to the use of different scales in Figs. 2 through 5, it is difficult to determine whether the thermocline is at the expected depth, because the fetch is not given. Moreover, the status of a water body cannot be determined unless measurements cover a period of at least one year, and depth profiles are completed to represent the entire depth of the pit. This shortcoming is most notable in the case of the Berkeley pit, where data are given for depths of only 20 and 35 m (66 and 115 ft), although the pit is reported to be 242 m (794 ft) deep. Limnological data to define the status of the pit water have to be collected at regular intervals, for the same parameters. The authors present temperature measurements for 1-m (3.3-ft) intervals, but fail to use that interval for other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen or, in some cases, for contaminant concentrations. Furthermore, the profiles for the deepest part of the pit display only part of the picture, because pits are rarely conical. Profiles can be considered to represent the status of a water body only after other stations in the pit have been monitored regularly and the consistency is determined. For example, fresh water, which can enter a pit at any depth, would interfere with the proposed meromictic conditions. Similarly, organic material at the bottom of a pit, such as the fish-waste deposited in the Gunnar pit, contribute to oxygen consumption. Oxygen depletion alone is not indicative of meromixis. It is interesting to note that the Dpit arsenic concentrations could possibly be slightly higher than the B-zone pit concentrations at depth, although this is difficult to determine accurately when a log scale is used for the D-pit and not for the B-zone pit. In our investigations, we noted arsenic removal in the B-zone pit bottom water, which was due to the formation of particles that are relegated to the newly forming sediment in the bottom of the pit. Particle-carrying contaminants form due to a combination of geochemical and biological factors and TSS contributed from erosion of the upper parts of the pit walls, whereas the settling out of particles from the water column is controlled by the physical conditions or turn over, for example. during ice cover in the B-zone pit. Although meromictic conditions for flooded pits may be desirable at decommissioning, this would depend largely on the physical conditions of the pit, because, under no circumstances, would this water be of desirable ground-water quality. Under meromictic conditions, acidity, if an environmental issue, may be reduced by microbial acid-neutralizing activity, and several heavy metals may form more or less stable sulphitic compounds. These may stay suspended in the water if conditions are such that they are not relegated to the sediments, i.e., in the absence of turnover. These processes do not take place in meromictic conditions only, but meromixis does require autochthonous and/or allochthonous organic substrate supplies, which are generated under aerobic conditions. A quantitative damage evaluation caused by ground motions associated with strong roof caving is presented. The strong roofs are modeled as either cantilevering or bridging beams over continuous elastic foundations subject to an exponentially distributed vertical stress. Major factors influencing roof caveability and strain energy buildup are identified and investigated. A methodology to evaluate the strain energy accumulation caused by overhanging roof is presented. The potential for mine tremors is determined in terms of the local Richter magnitude ML which depends on the seismic energy transformed from the stored strain energy released when the roof fails. A particle velocity model is applied to estimate the damage area associated with roof collapse. A case study from a Utah coal mine shows that estimations of bump severity and damage area agree well with the field observations.

The ability to treat refractory gold concentrates that contain appreciable amounts of sulfur and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner is important to the gold mining industry. Processing alternatives include: autoclave oxidation, bacterial oxidation and roasting. Roasting may be the cheapest of all the alternatives if inexpensive methods can be found to contain the arsenic and sulfur. The research program, being reported here, has been evaluating the ability to use hydrated lime in the roaster to capture both the arsenic and the sulfur. Lime roasting is not a new idea, it was proposed for copper ores by Bartlett in the early 1970's (Bartlett and Haung 1973) and for cobaltite concentrates by Taylor in the early 1980's (Taylor et al., 1981). In addition, ores have been roasted that contained limestone and it was shown that partial capture of the sulfur was possible. Lime -sulfur containment has been proposed for the coal fired electricity industry, as well.

This paper is a brief status summary of investigations by the authors over the past decade to develop a continuous process for recovering' high purity metal powder from pregnant solutions by gaseous reduction at elevated temperatures and pressures. Although these studies included extraction of other metals such as nickel, silver, and gold, this presentation will be confined to the hydrogen reduction of acidic and ammoniacal solutions of copper. The continuous hydrogen reduction process (CHR) described herein enjoys the environmental advantages of other hydrometallurgical processes but, in addition, provides a substantial benefit in fuel economy over competing processes. As was recognized by Schaufelberger in 1956, for a given amount of fuel a continuous hydrogen reduction process has the potential for producing four to six times as much metal as an electrolysis process (1). Although hydrogen reduction of metal salt solutions has been known for more than a century, extensive development work leading to commercialization was not initiated until the 1950's. Since then, commercial applications relative to other extractive techniques have been minor and have been confined to batch or to continuous, completely-mixed autoclaves. By contrast, the process described herein utilizes a continuous, tubular reactor which is operated in modified plug flow so that only limited and localized backmixing occurs. Thus, gradients in concentration, temperature, and pressure exist over the length of the reactor, the presence of which can be utilized to advantage for achieving high conversions and product quality (2, 3).

Mineralization features at the Bajo La Alumbrera porphyry copper-gold deposit are discussed as they affect gold leaching and copper flotation behavior. Alteration-mineralization geological blocks are assigned in the zoned body, and each required its own geostatistical model. They extend horizontally outward from potassic to the phyllic-propylitic boundary, vertically from surface down to 300 meters, and include oxide, secondary enriched, and hypogene mineralization. Copper and gold values are calculated geostatistically from assays and all available geologic-mineralogic information. Reserves are classified for each geologic block and for each open-pit bench into leach or float ore according to metal grades, geologic characteristics, and supergene-hypogene relations. Finally ore extraction behaviour is briefly described, grouping gold and copper reserves into metallurgical families.

INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2,3,4) and others, in the mid-1950's published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark's book (5) was published, in which a large amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6,7) and Majima and Takeda (El. These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.

As partial implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), Department of Interior, has requested each state to inventory hazardous abandoned mining areas within their boundaries. Primary interest is in such areas .as unstable waste-banks, subsidence and slumping, contamination of water supplies, and preservation of overall aesthetic qualities through reclamation. In addition to the concern expressed for abandoned mining areas, the legislation requires a complete inspection of operating mines quarterly and a partial inspection monthly. In Arizona copper has been mined for over 100 years and coal and uranium mining promises to expand in future years. The OSM requirement for a waste inventory and frequent monitoring of Arizona's large, widely spaced mines places a severe demand on limited personnel and operating budgets. Remote sensing by satellite provides an attractive and effective approach to aid the inventory and monitoring requirements of the OSM legislation.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine-mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels, while using a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1-m (20-ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complement the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off-curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

Three conditions are required for a risk to be realized: (1) a source of risk (i.e., hazard) must exists (2) some process must take place which will lead to the exposure of people, animals, and/or the environment to the hazard: and (3) as a result of the expense, undesirable effects are produced on the people, animals, and/or the environment. A comprehensive risk assessment addresses all three of the conditions through the following four steps: (1) risk source (hazard) characterization, (2) exposure assessment, (3) dose-response assessment, and (4) risk estimation. Although the terminology may differ, the overall approach of financial, public health, and environmental risk assessments is the same (National Science Foundation, 1985).

With the ever increasing demand for Finer powders by industry there has been a continuing effort by air classifier manufacturers to improve and offer machinery capable of producing these fine powders. Common to these classifiers is the use of a multivaned rotor through which passes all of the air used to transport the particles to be classified. Rotor revolutions per minute and the amount of air passing through the rotor are the main variables in determining the particle sizes which will be able to pass through the spinning rotor. A simplified equation derived by setting the air drag force carrying a particle through the rotor equal to the centrifugal force due to the spinning rotor's action on the entering air and particle is: Diameter of Particle = [ ] Where K is a function of air viscosity, particle configuration, rotor and blade configuration; RPM is rotor revolutions per minute; M3/sec. is air quantity passing through the openings between the rotor blades.

When Lewis and Clark first pushed their boats up the Missouri River, Meriwether Lewis reported the presence of coal in the western states by saying in 1802 that it "burnt tolerably well and afforded but little flame or smoke but produced a hot and lasting fire". Lewis would have been amazed and bewildered at the history of coal development in this region and the more recent political-socio-economic-environmental confrontations of today. Certainly without this coal the railroads would not have readily pushed into our western states, and the progress of this region would have suffered. The coal industry has passed from a period when "coal was king" to a period of depression in the industry, but its importance is being revived. A contributing and simultaneous environmental concern has emerged in the nation and in many states during the past ten years, partly caused by newly imposed standards for sulfur content of fuels. Much of the midwest and eastern coal cannot be used because of high sulfur content, shifting attention to the low sulfur coal deposits of the western states. In the western states, lands disturbed by strip mining or even underlain by strippable coal are small compared to the total acreage, and usually mining operations are on lands not under cultivation. There are some farm lands being disturbed by surface mining, but this is often over-emphasized. In states like New Mexico and Arizona the percentage is less. The value of the minerals underlying the surface certainly must be considered along with the value of the surface, and sometimes proper reclamation following mining can result in higher ultimate usage of the land.

Sonora Mining Corporation (SMC) operates the 6,000 tonne per day Jamestown open pit gold mine in the Mother Lode district of California. The mine has been in operation since January, 1987, and has produced approximately 7,800 kilograms of gold since start-up. The property consists of five ore bodies lying along a five kilometer stretch of the famous Mother Lode vein system. At present, only the Harvard ore body is being mined. The Harvard pit is centered around a historic underground mine of the same name that was operated from 1896 to 1916. The present ore body averages 2.5 grams gold per tonne as free milling gold and auriferous pyrite. The project consists of the open pit mine and concentrator complex in Tuolumne County, California, and a carbon-in-pulp leach plant located near Yerington, Nevada.

Mining and Process Solutions (MPS) most advanced process, GlyCatTM is the only process that can be easily adapted to existing cyanidation plants in the market today whose real advantages over cyanidation are when treating copper containing ores, concentrates or tailings. With such complex material, GlyCatTM requires 70-90% less cyanide addition to achieve the same precious metal extraction. However, GlyCatTM is not simply cyanidation with added glycine. It is a completely different process where the solution chemistry and conditions needed to effectively leach the precious metals are quite different. Downstream however, the process is largely unchanged as the recovery of the leached gold and silver uses existing known processes such as conventional activated carbon or zinc cementation (Merrill-Crowe process). Another advantage is lower SCN, OCN, WAD and no free cyanide in the effluent which can substantially reduce cyanide detoxification requirements and decrease the OHS and ESG risk of the operation. This paper outline some of these differences and presents testwork, piloting and process examples to highlight the advantageous of this new process over conventional cyanidation.

Experiments were performed under batchwise wet grinding conditions with dolomite mineral. The vibration signal was received by an accelerometer and transmitted to a mini-processor. The signal was first stored on a digital tape recorder (OAT) in voltage format during the grinding tests. The original signal was then re-sampled and converted into data format for IBM or compatible personal computer by a digital oscilloscope. The root-mean-square (RMS) and power spectrum was estimated on the time-domain vibration signal. A partial correlation analysis was applied to the frequency-domain signal to detect the non-zero correlation between the frequency bands and the operating parameters. A multiple stepwise regression was used to locate the key frequency bands for describing a particular operating parameter. After vibration analysis, the operating parameters in grinding, for example, the mill speed, the powder filling, the pulp density, the pulp temperature and the particle size were found to be strongly correlated with a few frequency bands. The grinding process could therefore be monitored using the vibration signal.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont USA (Newmont) in Nevada was faced with such a need in their Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corporation, tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop in replacement screen using a three dimensional screen panel. The urethane pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade their urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing, and other scalping applications.INTRODUCTION In Spring of 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick Corporation’s (Derrick) local area representative, met with Newmont USA (Newmont) to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the carbon in leach (CIL) train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, Nevada. The process was originally designed for 13,000 +tons per day (tpd) but has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned and now Newmont requires 16,000 tpd to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production. Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and therefore larger machines, screening media that doesn’t blind, or a combination of both. In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick Corporation had been working on a revolutionary three dimensional panel which would add non blinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 (Carlin, Nevada) in July of 2013 and was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

Using a fuzzy logic controller, a signal applied on the processes may be generated through a linguistic protocol expressing an operator's intuitive control strategies. In this work, fuzzy logic controller and PID controller imposed upon the feedback liquid level control systems for a stirred tank are studied and compared. The construction factors including the shape of membership functions, number of fuzzy variables, number of inputs, number of rules, and different defuzzification methods are considered in design and formulating the fuzzy logic control strategies and algorithms. From the analysis of the strategies and control performances, an optimum controller may be generated by making use of the best combination of these fuzzy construction factors.

The criteria used to design, operate and control flotation columns are significantly different from those used for conventional flotation machines. Therefore, a computer-aided design (CAD) package for column flotation has been developed. The simulator has been set up using guidelines developed at Virginia Tech and information published in literature during the past few years. The simulator is useful for determining the proper design and appropriate operating conditions for a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. In addition, the simulator can be used for training in column operation and for trouble-shooting operational problems. Simulation results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained using laboratory columns.

A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, pyrrhotite-quartzite, and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests of single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimum potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed. A method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation was proposed.

The boron review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1992. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled 1Mt (1.1 million st) in 1992, yielding 521 kt (574,000 st) of B203 for a total estimated value of $333 million. That was about 20% less than 1991 revised production figures, and less in value by $107 million. The United States continues to provide essentially all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1992 was about 900 people, the same as in 1991. In 1988, 1250 people worked in the boron industry. The Bureau estimated that total world production of boron in 1992 was about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), or about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st)of B2O3. World production in 1992 was about equal to revised 1991 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals.
