"Since 2008, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines (MSHA, 2008). MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force (2006) recommended an apparent temperature limit of 35 °C (95 °F) for RAs. In Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 7.504, or 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) inside an occupied RA (MSHA, 2016). The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity (Steadman, 1979).Calculations can be used to deter-mine if the air within an occupied RA will reach the apparent temperature limit. In these calculations, the mine temperature could be assumed to re-main constant. With this assumption, the effects of the mine strata thermal mass and thermal conductivity on the heat buildup in an RA are ignored. Re-search conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) shows that the mine air and strata temperatures surrounding an RA increase when subjected to the heat of an occupied RA (Yantek, 2014). Thus, calculations performed with the assumption that the mine temperature is constant would underpredict the resulting dry-bulb temperature and apparent temperature for a given RA occupancy. The mine air temperature has been used as the basis for RA temperature calculations. However, there has been no research to confirm that the mine air temperature is the appropriate basis."

Jackleg drill operators are exposed to harmful levels of hand-arm vibration (HAV). Anti-vibration handles and gloves provide modest reductions in HAV exposures and forearm muscle exertion from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves by jackleg drill operators. The goal of this pilot study was to investigate changes in HAV with the use of anti-vibration gloves and handles compared to forearm muscle exertion experienced by operators and measured with surface electromyography (EMG). Five subjects operated the drill under four different cases: no anti-vibration controls, anti-vibration gloves only, anti-vibration handle only, and simultaneous anti-vibration handle and glove use. Muscle exertion was expressed as a percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC) and was compared using Welch’s ANOVA with Games-Howell post hoc comparisons. The case with both anti-vibration controls in use simultaneously (largest grip diameter) was associated with a mean %MVC of 36.13% during operation for all forearm muscles combined, which was significantly higher than that of the other cases (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in mean HAV exposures. The anti-vibration handle with anti-vibration glove case only increased the maximum allowable exposure time by 8 min as compared to the control case without any anti-vibration controls. These results suggest that the modest HAV exposure reductions from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves may pale in comparison to the increased muscle exertion resulting from their use, and this trade-off among jackleg drill operators is a potential concern that warrants further investigation.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

"The Central Bayside System Improvement Project (CBSIP) is a critical element of the Sewer System Im-provement Program (SSIP), a 20-year, $6.9-billion investment by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commis-sion (SFPUC) to upgrade San Francisco’s 100+ years old seismically vulnerable combined sewer system. The CBSIP’s centerpiece, a proposed 10,000-foot-long (3,048-meter-long) Channel Tunnel, will provide reliable and redundant gravity conveyance and storage of combined wastewater flows from the northern and central parts of San Francisco to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant (SEP) while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for combined sewer discharges to the Bay. A tunnel with a diameter of 23 to 30 feet (7 to 9 meter) is being planned using pressurized-face tunnel boring machine technology. Project challenges include tunneling through Franciscan Bedrock, mixed ground conditions in close proximity to the Bay, connector tunnels and shafts, construction in congested urban environment, and challenging real estate issues for shaft access. BACKGROUND AND NEED FOR TUNNEL The City of San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. About 850,000 people live in the city and many more come to work, for tourism, and for attending conferences. The SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco that provides energy, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco, wholesale water to three Bay Area counties, and green hydro-electrical and solar power to San Francisco municipal departments. The SFPUC wastewater system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1000 miles of collection sewers, 28 pump stations, and three wastewater treatment plants. San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. After decades of service, much of the sewer system is nearing end of its working life. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC water and wastewater infrastructure was extensive. The 11,200-foot-long (3,400-meter-long), 66-inch-diameter (1,676-mm-diameter) Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the SF wastewater system was also damaged. This force main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the SEP. The force main is at the end of its life and was not constructed to the current seismic code; in addition it has no redundancy. Figure 1 shows the project background and the force main that will be provided redundancy by the new gravity tunnel."

New tunnels of significant alignment lengths such as mountain tunnels, base tunnels, as well as beneath urban centers pose unique environmental challenges. This paper highlights key environmental considerations for planning, design, construction, and operations by sharing lessons-learned from the authors' extensive project experience on these types of tunnels. Discussion of unique constraints include limited right-of- way, ventilation and emergency egress during the construction phase and revenue service, safety and security, and protection of existing structures. Practical approaches and applied innovative state-of-the-art solutions addressing distinct sustainability challenges and unique requirements are shared from US and international project examples.

The primary reason pigments are used in plastics is to impart a desired color to the plastic. Color is one of the more important assign considerations associated with today&apos;s market oriented society. Secondary reasons for adding pigments to plastics include: 1. Improved UV stability 2. Enhancement to selected physical properties 3. Changes in optical properties Pigments may be used at loadings as high as 20% or as low as .001%. Generally the loading levels are between 0.2% and 2.0%. Pigments may be added to the plastic either by the manufacturer of the plastic, or by the user of the plastic. If the customer buys material that is already colored, it is referred to as "pre-colored". If the customer buys uncolored plastic and adds colorants, the process is referred to as "in-house" coloring.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatally and nonfatally) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries can be prevented by the installation of roof screen. However, many coal mines are reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential savings in workers&apos; compensation (W C) premiums that can be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by Illinois and Kentucky were investigated in this study. Using data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g., average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), baseline mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state&apos;s actual WC rate-setting formulas, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the total savings in WC costs after a three-year period. Annual savings in WC premiums ranged from $41,000 to $326,000 for the 67-person mine, and $96,000 to $843,000 for the 150-person mine. An economic analysis of the cost of a roof screening program at a 67-person mine was also conducted. The annual cost of a roof screening program here was estimated at $240,000. At this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

As openpit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in openpit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep openpit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high-latitude openpit mines, due to a phenomenon known as atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In openpit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around openpit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CfD) program. Two-dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

Lack of understanding the major process parameters and inadequate scale-up factors have led to the belief that fundamental knowledge is not important for successful flotation plant operations. Flotation of simple and easy to process ores may not require a strong fundamental knowledge base for day to day operations. However, as low grade complex ores are mined and process control is integrated into flotation schemes, it is imperative for a plant operator to acquire a strong background in the basics of the flotation process at hand and/or have access to such a knowledge base at short notice. In order to meet the challenges of unexpected changes in the feed, reagent quality, water chemistry, physical, mechanical and hydrodynamic conditions, the flotation plant superintendent/chief metallurgist must have a strong background in the flotation fundamentals.

The Tacubaya subway tunnels form a link in the Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (Mass Transit System) of the Federal District of Mexico. One tunnel 327 m long lies to the north of Tacubaya Station, the other 811 m long, to the south. The tunnels are designed to accommodate two subway trains, one inbound and one outbound, within the inside diameter of 8.5 m. The designers of the tunnel lining and tunnel driving equipment were faced with the problem of driving two subway tunnels 9.0 m outside diameter through water-bearing soil, directly beneath a high speed limited access highway, a main drainage sewer, structures including residences and office buildings, on an alignment curved for 67 per cent of tunnel length, and on grades as high as 7 per cent, within a limited budget, with minimum damage to property and disruption to the community. Planning The following decisions affecting tunnel design and construction were made at an early stage of planning: Shield. To enhance safety, a tunnel shield would be used for tunnel driving. Dewatering. The water-bearing soil could be effectively dewatered; consequently, tunnel driving could be performed in free air. Hand Mining. To minimize investment in equipment, hand mining would be used to excavate and support the face.

Rock mass discontinuities play a significant role in evaluating the stability of rock slopes. It is necessary to collect and analyze these discontinuities to fully understand the mechanical and deformational behaviors of rock masses. Based on the digital images of some slope faces, this paper proposes a framework based on machine learning for detecting and extracting discontinuities. First, digital images and photo poses are combined, the original scene is reconstructed, and 3D point cloud data are obtained. All captured point clouds can be mapped with each image by the direct linear transformation algorithm. Next, the detection machine learning algorithm is used to segment rock mass discontinuities on 2D digital images. Finally, based on the mapping relationship, the 2D digital images that were segmented are transformed into 3D point cloud data. The geometric parameters of the corresponding discontinuities can be extracted by the DBSCAN and the Skmeans algorithm and the characterization of specific rules. The proposed framework was evaluated utilizing a quantity of slope digital images in the Yebatan hydropower under construction, located in Sichuan Province, China, as a case study. The results illustrate that most deviations are less than 10° for the dip direction and dip angle, which verifies the reliability of the proposed framework and maintains acceptable measurement accuracy.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company&apos;s Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold&apos;s revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada&apos;s gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." Dust generation and its dispersion in a longwall mine pose significant health and safety issues. The concern is prominent at both the working face, where coal excavation exposes workers to high dust concentrations, and also in the return, where float dust accumulates. To address this issue, researchers at theUniversity of Kentucky designed and fabricated a flooded-bed dust scrubber integrated into a full-scale physical model of a longwall shearer. This mock-up was installed in the longwall test gallery at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). A full-factorial experiment was designed to measure the effectiveness of the scrubber on dust capture. Test results indicated dust reduction of up to 57% in the return airways. This paper presents the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and its validation by comparing the simulation results against the experimental results. The CFD simulations show good agreement with experimental results with differences between + 6.9 and − 9.7%. The validated CFD model was used further to predict the scrubber performance under additional operating conditions, resulting in a dust reduction of up to 66.5%. With this level of success, the scrubber concept can be a game changer for the mining industry, and it can be utilized to improve health and safety in longwall mines.

Deformations during heating and cooling of three drifts in granitic rock were influenced by the presence of faults and shear zones. Thermal deformations were significantly larger in sheared and faulted zones than where the rock was jointed. but neither sheared nor faulted. Furthermore. thermal deformations in faulted or sheared rock were not significantly recovered during subsequent cooling thus a permament deformation remained. This inelastic response is in contrast with elastic behavior identified in unfaulted and unsheared rock segments. A companion paper (Butkovich and Patrick, 1986a) indicates that deformations in un- sheared or unfaulted rock were effectively modeled as an elastic response. We conclude that permanent deformations occurred in fractures with crushed minerals and fracture filling or gouge materials. Potential mechanisms for this permanent deformation are asperity re-adjustments during thermal deformations. micro-shearing, asperity crushing and crushing of the secondary fracture filling minerals. Additionally, modulus differences in sheared or faulted rock as compared to more intact rock would result in greater deformations in response to the same thermal loads.

This study compares the cementation performance of metallic iron, metallic aluminum, and metallic tin in terms of the reaction conditions and parameters in synthetic antimony chloride solutions. The effects on the antimony recovery (%) caused by the cementators’ types, stirring speed, reaction time, and temperatures were explored thoroughly. The cementation kinetics of antimony were also explored for each cementator. The activation energies were determined to be 10.99, 9.09, and 13.58 kJ mol– 1 for Al, Fe, and Sn, respectively. The results reveal that the reaction is diffusion controlled, and comparable results were obtained for each cementator. At 25 °C, 40 mg of iron powder was found to reduce all antimony ions (i.e., approx. 99% recovery), but even when 100 mg of Al and Sn cementators were used, the antimony recovery did not reach 100%. This result shows that iron is the best candidate to cement antimony out of the solution.

"Froth flotation circuits are widely used throughout the mineral processing industry for the concentration of fine particles. It had been estimated that nearly 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of ores are treated globally each year using this versatile separation process (Fuerstenau, 1999). Due to the high feed tonnage, a large economic incentive exists for flotation plant operators to optimize the performance of this critical processing circuit. Prior to the 1950s, the optimization of flotation circuits primarily involved the manual adjustment of operating variables based on visual observation and sporadic sampling (Lynch, Harbort and Nelson, 2010). During the next several decades, however, the advent of improved on-line instrumentation coupled with the rapid development of high-speed microprocessors allowed the industry to develop more advanced control systems that could quickly adjust operational parameters in response to disturbances in ore characteristics and plant flows. These early online controls typically involved feedback loops designed to stabilize cell performance through the automatic manipulation of process variables such as pulp levels, gas rates and chemical dosages. The set-points for these controllers were often set by plant operators based on one or more operator objectives, such as maximizing throughput, recovery or grade. More recently, these regulatory controllers have been interfaced with high-level data display and management systems that provide operators with the ability to better optimize flotation plant performance based on mathematical models and rule-based algorithms (Greet, 2010).While tremendous strides have been made during the past several decades, even the most modern flotation plants are still faced with the long-standing question: “What are we trying to optimize?” From an operator perspective, some common responses include “Maximize tonnage of saleable concentrate” or “Maximize metals recovery at a customer-specified market grade.” These replies may or may not reflect those of management, who often focus on economic goals such as “Maximize profits for each operational unit” or “Maximize rate of return for all corporate assets.” Unfortunately, these high-level objective statements do not always translate well into practice due to the disconnect between plant operating protocols and product value. Attempts have been made by industry to overcome this issue using various types of optimization routines such as linear programming or other optimization engines. While this approach does have some merit, these blind routines require considerable input data and interpretational expertise and provide little or no fundamental insight that can be used to drive improvements in concentrator performance."

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. A photochromic material is one which undergoes a change of color when exposed to light and reverts to its original color when the light is removed. Review articles carrying extensive bibliographies have been written by Brown and Shaw (1) and by Schwab and Bertelson (2). Organics. Schwab and Bertelson divide the reactions in different organic photochromic materials into some half-dozen categories; Windsor (3) reduces these to the following three main classes of general interest, based on how they work. 1. Stereoisomers. Absorption of light breaks one of the chemical bonds in a. ring molecule, thus allowing the molecule to unwind and form a different geometrical arrangement. The reverse process is a reforming of the bond. Examples of this class are the spiropyrans and the anils. 2. Dyes. A triphenyl methane dye, for example, is oxidized by energetic light; the absorption characteristics of the positive ion so formed are different from those of the original electrically neutral benzene rings. 3. Triplet States. In the class of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, ground-state molecules are excited first to a singlet state by irradiation, and then go, via the lowest triplet state, to an excited triplet state. Visible light is absorbed in the triplet-triplet transition.

Wastes related to abandoned mine sites can constitute important potential pollution sources, depending on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics and volume. Mine waste disposal sites contain a diverse variety of wastes including overburden material and waste rocks, the ore which cannot be economically removed and wastes from the smelting processes when they are accomplished at the mine site. These materials are usually heterogeneous in size, mineralogy and metal concentrations. Asturias, in northern Spain, has an extensive mining history and, in consequence, there are abundant unreclaimed and derelict mine sites with abandoned mines and spoil heaps of different age, morphology, content and dimensions. In these spoil heaps, waste materials are subjected to the intense action of a humid environment, so the instability of sulphides and sulpharsenides results in the production of acid and metal-rich leachates, which are incorporated to surface water or infiltrated through the land reaching groundwater bodies. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the stored materials are key data to evaluate if they represent an environmental risk. Mineralogy and geochemistry of wastes and the particular specific environmental conditions of each site affect the rate of weathering and therefore the metal release. The characterisation of mine wastes is a necessary step in order to establish suitable assessment strategies with the aim of reducing the leaching, transport and widespread of ecotoxic elements from mining wastes to the environment (surface water, sediments, soils and air).
