Technical service is assuming an increasingly important role in the sale of asbestos fibre,, Manufacturers are examining raw materials more closely than ever before in order to, obtain the most efficient usage in their processes. Asbestos is one of the more difficult materials to evaluate and consequently has been are of the last to be subjected to evaluation. The main problem encountered in the evaluation of asbestos fibre is that minor differences in grade and texture are not shown up by chemical analysis, and are identified only by specialized physical analyses or actual production use. However, such minor differences become more critical as manufacturing processes are made more efficient, and many purchasing agents and plant chemists are applying a closer scrutiny to their supply of raw asbestos fibre. Many processes have been formulated around grades and qualities of asbestos fibre, which were standard some time ago, but which may now be subject to modification and improvement.

The major underlying threat to man's successful survival and happy existence on this planet is our own prolification. This poses an even greater threat to the future of civilization than continued wars and even "The Bomb" itself. Just the predictions of the world's population trend are awesome and demand our serious thought. This trend has been given the now well-known term, "The Population Explosion" - and this is literally what is taking place throughout most of the countries around the globe. Today, the world's resources support approximately 3.3 billion people. Based on the present world population growth rate of 2.1 percent, there will be another 65, million just one year from today. Such an increase in one year means that the world will add a greater population than that of Mexico and Canada combined. Projecting at this remarkable, but unchecked, growth rate, 6.7 billion people will be competing for survival by the end of this century.

Mine haul roads degrade rapidly due to extreme loads on suboptimal construction materials. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are suited to quantify large-area road-network conditions, such as surface roughness, defects and grade to optimize remediation of poor conditions and reduce overall costs. Mine haul roads present unique challenges, such as material type and edge characteristics, to automatic road detection that often fails, requiring manual road input. This research work proposes a new method using the road center determined by the principal curve of a haul truck’s path. Analysis grids were created from this center line. A dense point cloud from UAV photogrammetry was generated and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on each individual grid. The root-mean-square error in each grid indicates the surface roughness, and the change of slope between grids indicates the road grade inconsistencies. This method was applied to 26 road sections, and the results were validated by images taken from the truck operator’s vantage point. Critical defects were identified including excessive pothole formation, corrugation, depressions retaining water, and narrowing of travel lane. The results demonstrate this is a valid method of road identification and quantification of road defects at a mine site.

Smooth, compact, dendrite-free, 24-h zinc deposits have been electrowon from zinc chloride electrolyte using a diaphragm cell. The cell consisted of sealed anode compartment con- taining DSA anodes which were separated from an open cathode compartment by Dynel cloth membranes. Fresh electrolyte was fed to the cathode compartment where zinc deposition onto an aluminum cathode was aided by air-sparging. The catholyte passed through the diaphragm into the anode compartment from which chlorine gas and spent anolyte were withdram.

In this chapter, a review is made of the various stages of an exploration program, mineral rights acquisition methods and the partners involved in an agreement, the after- tax cash flow approach using present value discounting principles, the establishment of computerized financial models for assistance during the negotiating stages for a mineral property, and the various evaluation techniques and their specific applications during different phases of an exploration program. A set of examples is shown encompassing the initial target-seeking stages to the ultimate feasibility study stage.

Unlike most other minerals, electrokinetic measurements of calcium montmodonite (a clay mineral) and u1exite (a boron mineral) exhibit an unusual behavior. While the addition of monovalent salts such as NaCI and KCI is expected to compress the electrical double layer with a resultant less absolute charge, an opposite trend is observed. A set of systematic experiments with monovalent and multivalent ions has been carried out to understand the mechanism of this phenomenon Examination of the results reveals that the behavior of montmorillonite is dictated by the exchangeable divalent cations at the edges which undergo an exchange process with monovalent cations resulting in the reduction of positive charges. The solubility of ulexite, on the other hand, is found to decrease with increasing monovalent cation concentration leading to again an increase in the absolute negative charge.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is an independent, state of Florida research agency. It was created in 1978 to conduct research to enhance the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. The institute also conducts research to prevent, minimize or rectify environmental impacts caused by the industry. And it helps educate the public concerning phosphate-related technology and issues. FIPR is funded by a severance tax on the industry and is governed by a five-member board of directors appointed by the governor. FIPR's research is playing a role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. Its technology research program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. It is developing new and improved methods of beneficiation and fertilizer production. This includes new process flowsheets and on-line analyzers and process control methods. FIPR is also developing uses for the phosphogypsum byproduct of phosphoric acid production and evaluating the risks associated with its uses.

This paper describes a fundamental approach to in situ leach mining (ISLM) lixiviant development which emphasizes leaching selectivity through detailed characterization of mineral-solution interfacial chemistry and post-leach geochemistry. This experimentation and modeling approach consists of: (1) petrographic identification of reactive ore and gangue minerals; (2) determination of leaching kinetics of individual minerals through batch leaching tests; (3) evaluation of bulk solution geochemistry through column leaching tests; and (4) ISLM simulation of element species transport and geochemistry through core leaching tests. Recent results confirm good leaching selectivity for manganese, but reveal post- leach precipitation and permeability loss during core leaching experiments.

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million. ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.

LaModel is a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary element method, which is utilized to analyze the displacement and stress in flat-lying, tabular orebodies. In coal mining, the accuracy and reliability of LaModel are proven with the utilization of the Mark- Bieniawski coal pillar strength and the stress gradient formula with proposed methodologies. However, the application of LaModel is limited to coal mines due to the default coal pillar strength properties. Recently, the stress gradient functions have been established and used to derive concentric rings of zones to simulate stone mine pillar yielding in LaModel. Also, to gain a robust understanding of the brittle failure mechanism and its effect on pillar strength, an S-Shaped failure envelope, where rock mass' cohesive and frictional strength components mobilize as a function of confinement (e.g., minimum principal stress), has been implemented into FLAC3D software. Therefore, by employing brittle failure criteria, the pillar strength stages at various width-to-height ratios and different pillar dimensions are estimated for four benching stages. The estimated pillar strengths and stress gradients for benching conditions are then used to calibrate LaModel in-seam material properties and compare stresses computed by LaModel and FLAC3D. Consequently, this study aims to increase the safety measures in the stone mining industry by implementing the practical use of LaModel for underground stone mines' initial development to various stages of bench mining.

Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.

A ventilation study was conducted at a western U.S. coal mine to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. This field study was part of a project investigating the effect of longwall face length and caving characteristics on longwall face air behavior and its potential movement on and off of the face. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) were done to describe air movement on the face and in the mined-portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob.

The proper modeling of granular flow using discontinuum mechanics has the potential to be one of the most significant scientific advancements in the mining industry today. This paper will examine the status of discrete element technology, specifically focusing on current and future applications. The fundamentals of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) will be briefly introduced, as well as relevant design parameters. Various types of granular flow problems currently being solved using the DEM methodology will be presented. The results and potential benefits of these cases will also be discussed. All simulation results and figures used throughout this paper are from studies and designs preformed by the DEM group at Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI).

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

An innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a high-capacity roof-truss system to replace conventional wooden cribs. The first field test was conducted at the Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests were installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data demonstrated that the dynamic roof-truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining. Thus, a stable tailgate entry is maintained

The bromine review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. Bromine production in the United States during 1992 amounted to 171 kt (376 million lbs), a 453-t (I-million lb) increase from 1991. Data compiled by the US Bureau of Mines indicates this increase was due mainly to greater exports of elemental bromine and bromine derivatives (flame retardants). Exports increased despite the economic slowdown in Europe and Japan. The United States remains the world's largest bromine producer, with about 42% of the total. Israel is ranked second, followed by the United Kingdom, the former Soviet Union and Japan.

Pit slope designs at Nickel Plate Mine have used relatively steep interim and final wall slopes of 60 degrees overall. The rock is unusually strong and tough with most discontinuity sets being steeply dipping. An integrated program of monitoring and drainage has been used. Stopes of large extent which are generally unsupported occur on the property. For the most part, no deterioration of the stability of the stopes has occurred over the last 30 or more years. Mining methods through these areas have used a combination of fill s placed via VCR drop raises and crater blasting of the backs. One of the major challenges in mining through the stope areas is to maintain slope stability conditions and to reduce dilution of the higher value ore zones occurring immediately around the stope areas. Laboratory and small-scale continuous pilot-plant investigations made at the Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that the copper segregation process is applicable to the treatment of oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores regardless of the gangue constituents. The process comprises heating the ore to a temperature of 750° C. with small quantities- of sodim chloride and coke to produce metallic copper, which then is recovered by flotation. Tests were made on' 23 copper ores of different types containing 0.8 to 5 percent Cu, .The copper recoveries ranged from 73 to 96 percent in concentrates assaying 10 to 62 percent Cu, depending on the grade and type of ore, The direct operating cost for a 1,000-ton-per-day furnace and flotation plant is estimated at about- $3 per ton of ore.

By means of laboratory balling tests and a procedure for determining bentonite concentration in a green ball the present study revealed that the bentonite savings by mulling concentrate and bentonite prior to balling was sufficient to warrant installation of a full-size unit in a pellet plant. On the basis of this work, a muller was put on stream at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Cornwall pellet plant in June 1969, and has operated continuously since then. Plant tests showed that the use of the muller resulted in bentonite savings of about -502 without any loss of green, dry, and fired ball quality. Virtually no maintenance problems have been encountered. This information is important to future pelletizing operations both from the standpoint of product quality and economics.
