The western united States is not usually noted for the production of fluorspar; however, many significant fluorspar districts do occur in the Rocky Mountain region and constitute a resource of sizable dimension and major potential. This is particularly true within the area of the West served by the rail lines of the Union Pacific Railroad (see Figure 1). Fluorspar deposits near the Union Pacific have produced over 1.3 million tons of finished fluorspar products from 2.3 million tons of ore. Approximately 80% of this production was of acid-grade and 20% of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. Production of ceramic-grade was negligible. Through the years substantial production has come from eight mining districts. Five of these have produced metallurgical-grade and three acid-grade. The best-known fluorspar producing area in the West is the Jamestown Mining District. It was one of the first producers of fluorspar in the western United States and is estimated to have produced over 500,000 tons of finished fluorspar from over a million tons of ore. The district encompasses approximately 36 square miles in central Boulder County, Colorado, about 9 miles northwest of the City of Boulder. Many attempts have been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris (1950) by Cerchar. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last 25 years. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now accepted standard presentation. The float and sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve are then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the concept is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods.

A laboratory method for the simulation of in-situ leaching of uranium was developed under contract to the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines. Simulation tests using sulfuric acid, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate as reagents and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant were carried out with representative ores from Texas and Wyoming. The tests not only yielded recovery rates of uranium and permeability changes, but also qualitative inferences on the chemical and physical phenomena which occur underground. Leaching with basic solutions was found to be kinetic constrained and with acid solutions, equilibrium constrained. The rapid permeability changes observed when leach solutions were introduced, were probably caused by gas blockages in the packing. Precipitation of calcite or gypsum and the reaction of clay to leach solutions had slow and gradual effect on the packing permeabilities.

Almost 100 sedimentation ponds were conceptually designed for a large surface mining study area in northeast Texas. An approximate procedure was developed to economically estimate construction quantities in order to predict surface water control costs. This procedure utilized site-specific empirical relationships developed from detailed analyses on a representative number of proposed sedimentation ponds. Use of these equations provided earthwork volumes, and spillway pipe lengths. The procedure developed for this study is presented along with the results of a verification analysis.

I. INTRODUCTION The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is a regional water and sewerage authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to the Metropolitan Boston area. The MWRA was created by the Massachusetts Legislature as an independent authority in 1985 following the filing of a lawsuit in federal court to correct the pollution of Boston Harbor resulting from inadequate and inadequately maintained sewerage facilities. Immediately upon its creation, the MWRA began to tackle treatment plant issues, including addressing the need for a secondary treatment plant, planning for ceasing ocean discharging of sludge, and making interim repairs to the existing, antiquated treatment plants. The MWRA's initial activities led to a court-ordered schedule for construction of a single new primary and secondary treatment facility, for development of sludge management plan focussed principally on reuse, and for completion of a short term program of repairs to existing facilities. Once a schedule for completing these activities had been negotiated, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a plaintiff in the federal court case, asked that the MWRA take "responsibility" for controlling discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) within its service area. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of pillar failure in a southern West Virginia coal mine. The conclusions are based on in-mine observations and analysis of mining methods, eyewitness account of the sequence of events, topographic and geologic conditions, and mechanical properties of mine roof, coal, and floor. The study indicated that massive pillar failure was caused by the collapse of the mine roof. The collapse of the mine roof was due to the combined effects of high lateral compressive stress and high extraction ratio causing excessive bending of the roof beyond its limit. It was assumed that the higher lateral compressive stress under such a shallow cover was probably due to the drastic change in the structural geology of the area and possible residual stresses. Eased on the analytical study it was concluded that the sudden release of elastic energy (shock) due to the rupture of the roof caused the squeezing of approximately eighty mine pillars.

This paper examines the relevant theory, experience, and past practices relating to development mining near gas or oil wells. It addresses setback distance for both coal and stone room-and-pillar mining. This study also involved a review of accident reports involving well interceptions and downhole well surveys. It provides technical considerations for decisions regarding safe setback distances for development mining throughout the United States. The study’s scope is limited to mining near active or inactive (i.e., non-producing, abandoned or inadequately plugged) wells with known surface locations.

The adsorption of uranium onto Wyoming bentonite was measured in carbonate media over the range pH 8-11. Uranium was removed from solution onto the solids by a rapid reaction, proposed to be adsorption of the anionic uranyl tricarbonato complex onto edges of the clay platelets, and a slow reaction which may be precipitation of a hydroxide. The changes in uranium content of the aqueous and solid phases of a uranium ore carbonate leach slurry were also measured as the slurry was progressively diluted. There was an increase in the uranium content of the solids as the pH of the suspension was lowered, as was observed with the Wyoming bentonite. The results indicate the conditions that should be met with respect to pH control in order to prevent the problem of excessive uranium adsorption in the counter-current decantation washing circuit of a conventional leaching process, as well as in the leaching and restoration phases of carbonate solution mining.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

Mining in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District has been going on for over 100 years with a long- term continuation very likely. Mining is presently carried out at depths below the -5000' horizon. As mining continues at ever increasing depths, higher in-situ rock stresses and subsequent rock deformation is encountered making mining costly and hazardous. To provide access for men and materials in such areas, a wooden raise preparation structure is typically built. Although these structures provide adequate support and access, they have proved to be very costly to construct and maintain.

Any geostatistical study involves (implicit) hypotheses about 1. The distribution function 2. The drift of the data 3. The (underlying) variogram Once these are known, most other results follow from geostatistical theory. However, to date, there have been few theoretical studies on testing these implicit hypotheses. Most of the published studies in this area have dealt with the fluctuation of the variogram or the sampling distribution of the variogram (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978; Davis and Borgman, 1979). Questions regarding these hypotheses regarding a given deposit arise often. Coal geologists often infer channels and washouts on the basis of thicknesses data. Zoning is recognized in a variety of metal deposits. A test as to whether these inferences are valid on just chance occurrences would have widespread application. .It is standard geostatistical practice to "eyeball" fit variograms. In the early exploration phase when just a few pairs are available, the variogram often displays wide fluctuations and there may be considerable doubt about which variogram model to use.

Mineral Development Agreements (MDA?s) are a cooperative mechanism in Canada by which the federal and individual provincial governments can coordinate their scientific, techno- logical and market development resources in order to implement measures designed to stimulate mineral exploration and development by the private sector; the objective, ultimately, being to increase the mineral industry?s contribution to provincial economies. In the latest round of MDA?s, which was initiated in 1984, a significant number of planned activities relate to industrial minerals. This paper will describe the nature and importance of MDA's in Canada and will outline the wide range of activities taking place with respect to industrial minerals.

For many years excavations were made in rock exclusively by conventional blasting methods, and without concern for damage to the rock surfaces which remained after the excavation was completed. Recently, however, there is an increasing awareness for the importance of making rock excavations with as little damage as possible to the remaining rock surfaces; consequently, several revolutionary new precision blasting techniques have been developed during the past few years. These techniques, variously known as cushion, smooth- wall, perimeter, pre-shear, and pre-split blasting, basically involve the creation of a fracture plane in the rock between a series of blasted holes. The variations in each of these techniques are largely due to the differences in hole diameters, hole spacings, methods of charging, and sequence of blasting used to achieve certain specific results. The development of these precision blasting techniques was initiated by Canadian Industries Limited in 1953 at the time the Sir Adam Beck No. 2 Hydro-electric Project was under construction by the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. Since then, these techniques have been somewhat advanced, and they have been applied with varying degrees of success to a number of projects. These projects include railroad and high- way cuts, dam spillway channel excavations, canal excavations, tunnel driving, shaft sinking, and other underground applications.

The 3RPORT Project, includes a 5-mile tunnel excavated by a 19-foot diameter slurry Tunnel Boring Machine below the city of Fort Wayne, IN. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) indicated vuggy to massive argillaceous dolomite within the tunnel alignment. During excavation of the first reach, the TBM encountered zones of cohesive clay and sandstone presented in full face and mixed face conditions. The occurrence of Sandstone was not a “Baselined Condition” described in the GBR for this reach of the alignment. This paper will discuss the methodology to investigate, mitigate and evaluate the DSC impacts on TBM performance.

A financial-economic model incorporating physical, market, and policy variables is developed for mining investment in Bolivia. Additional risk criteria emanating from political instability. new mining legislation, recent environmental regulations, and a new minerals taxation system are accounted for and are integrated into the investment decision model. Results of the model indicate that geologic and market variables have the dominant effect on the investment-worth function. Among policy variables, exchange rate and taxation policies have the most significant influence. Depreciation allowance for infrastructure development has negligible weight in the investment-worth function. The business structure of the firm considering investing in the Bolivian Polymetallic Project is found to be an instrumental factor in the investment-worth outcome. Specifically, undiversified mining companies whose operations exclude zinc production as the primary source of revenue would benefit most from adoption of this project.

The Groveland deposit, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, consists of an E -W trending overturned syncline of Middle Precambrian Vulcan iron formation. At Groveland, the Vulcan formation can be divided into four units or facies. The total succession may be more than 550 feet thick, and consists of a basal unit composed of a lean chemical quartzite with traces of magnetite; a non-banded, partly clastic unit characterized by the preponderance of hematite over magnetite; a transition unit of well-banded magnetite-bearing iron formation interbedded with non-banded oolitic hematite; and a well-banded magnetite-quartz silicate unit at the top of the exposed sequence. The present magnetite-hematite ratios of different units within the orebody are considered to be a primary (post-diagenetic) feature of the original sediment. Subsequent regional metamorphism has increased the grain size of the original iron oxide minerals, but did not appreciably alter the oxidation state of the original sediment.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make everything "bigger and faster" This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities for clean coal. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal bulk carriers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities at ports. The present engineering and construction cost of these larger facilities make it essential that the flow and handling properties of the particular coals are fully known. These properties can be measured well in advance and the proper design criteria established. This eliminates costly surprises later on during start-up and operations. This paper will review coal and coal refuse properties, such as shear strength, cohesion, friability, and the flowability of coal and how they affect the design criteria of storage silos.
