"...Unfortunately, the research activities in soil mechanics had one undesirable psychological effect. They diverted the attention of many investigators and teachers from the manifold limitations imposed by nature on the application of mathematics to problems in earthwork engineering. As a consequence, more and more emphasis has been placed on refinements in sampling and testing and on those very few problems that can be solved with accuracy. Yet accurate solutions can be obtained only if the soil strata are practically homogeneous and continuous...." This statement about soil mechanics was made by Karl Terzaghi, thirty years ago and applies to a greater degree today to the infant science of rock mechanics. More uncontrolled variables are added to the already many existing in soil mechanics. Variables, such as Macro-discontinuity and in situ stress levels. In no other field of engineering are the problems as site oriented. Presently this site dependance demands the investigator or rock mechanics engineer to get his hands dirty rooting in the muck of a tunnel floor trying to properly install or readout test apparatus in a comprehensive site investigation. This paper discusses such a site investigation designed to determine the problems and solutions inherent in the driving of the Trans Koolau Tunnel. The paper will describe the various types of tests to be performed, how the results are to be used and the interrelation of the various tests themselves.

Taking into account the possibilities of condensation of water vapour contained in air during its flow through a series of spot coolers as well as formation of eventual fog, a mathematical model of dynamic temperature, specific humidity and degree of fogging of cooled air in underground mining galleries with direct ventilation is developed. In the gallery, there situated various heat and moisture sources both of distributive and of concentrated types. The model is represented by three partial differential equations of first order. The cases of cooling with full as well as with partial air stream flowing through the gallery are distinguished. Owing to the fact that in practical designing, more important is the knowledge of the variation process of temperature, specific humidity and fogging of cooled mine air at steady state conditions, the model is modified to a set of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Based on the presented algorithm, the obtained set of ordinary differential equations is numerically solved which enables to: • specify the distribution of temperature, specific humidity, relative humidity and degree of fogging of cooled air in mining galleries; • determine the cooling powers of air coolers for their known locations; • indicate the locations of the coolers of known cooling powers. Exemplary calculations of temperature and relative humidity of cooled air are presented graphically in a number of diagrams.

Geological interpretations generally require projections from direct observations at the earth's surface. Crustal projections include mineral deposits as well as the geochemistry of the crust and its fluids, structure and tectonics. Drilling offers opportunities for verification of the required projections, and is thus a required step in furthering crustal understanding. Like any new science, the direct observations that drilling provides commonly generate major surprises and stimulate totally new ideas. Drilling is costly. There are many critically important scientific problems with societal and potential economic benefits in mineral deposits which have not been drilled because the holes are difficult to justify as economically sound risks for private capital. Such holes, however, are highly justifiable research goals for government because of the significant new opportunity for ore deposit insight and exploration that they afford. The earth science community is prepared with excellent drilling projects for research in mineral deposits.

The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26 million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled on site. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centered around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases in production costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

1. Coal Preparation Terms (General) 1.1 Coal preparation-collectively, physical and mechanical processes applied to coal to make it suitable for a particular use. 1.2 Run of mine (ROM coal)-coal produced by mining operations, before screening, crushing, or preparation. 1.3 Raw coal-coal that has received no preparation other than possibly screening or crushing. 1.4 Raw coal feed-raw coal supplied to a plant or machine, in which it undergoes some form of preparation. 1.5 Coal cleaning-the treatment of coal to lower the mineral matter content (ash). 1.6 Cleaned coal; clean coal-coal produced by a cleaning process (wet or dry). 1.7 Middlings-a product of coal preparation that, by reason of its ash content, is intermediate between coal and discard. It follows therefore that the relative density of middlings is intermediate between those of coal and discard. Middlings may be reprocessed. 1.8 True middlings; bone comparatively high ash particles so nearly homogeneous that their quality cannot readily be improved by crushing and recleaning. 1.9 False middlings; interbanded middlings-middliigs in which the particles consist of bands of coal and shale, and from which the coal may be liberated by crushing 1.10 Refuse-waste material in the raw coal which the cleaning process removes. (See also discard; dirt; stone, No. 1.12). 1.1 1 Reject-the material extracted from the feed during cleaning, for retreatment or discard. 1.12 Discard; dirt; stone--the material extracted from the raw coal and finally discarded. 1.13 Recirculation-the operation in which the whole or part of a product from a process is returned to the feed to the process, e.g., the return of the crushed overflow from a screen to the screen feed for rescreening. 1.14 Foreign coal-coal received at a preparation plant from a colliery other than that to which the plant is attached. 1.15 Imported coal-coal coming from a foreign country, or other state within the country. 1.16 Low-grade coal combustible material that has only limited uses owing to undesirable characteristics (eg., ash content or size). 1.17 Segregation-partial separation of a previously mixed material into its constituents, occurring as a result of differences in either particle size or relative density. 2. Cleaning Characteristics 2.1 Washability-amenability of coal to improvement in quality by cleaning. 2.2 Float-and-sink analysis-the division of a sample into relative density fractions with defined limits, the proportions of the fractions being expressed as percentages of the total sample, commonly with an indication of the ash percentage (and other characteristics, if required) of each fraction.

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

"Heavy impact. High frequency hammering. Extreme abrasion. Building on the experience of owning and operating its own mines, Ovako has developed a deep knowledge of how vital the right steel properties are in withstanding the extreme loads encountered in every part of the drill string. That is why Ovako’s product development process is focused on understanding the specific load cases and manufacturing operations associated with rock tools.The punishing conditions of percussive drilling can push the limits of most materials. And heavy mechanical loads are only the beginning. Highimpact energies at high frequency are a major source of fatigue. High temperatures result from impact energy losses. And abrasive, erosive and adhesive wear are constant risks. Handling any of these varying demands at a single point along the drill string is difficult enough — which makes optimizing for the entire drilling system an extremely complex challenge. Engineering for specific loadsOvako has specialized over many decades in analyzing the dominant loads for each of the parts and components used in rock tools, and testing for individual applications in its laboratories. The most critical fatigue properties are controlled through the steel metallurgy, and supported by performance measurements through extensive rotating bending fatigue (RBF) testing, along with special methods that combine impact load with various wear loads. The viscosities of industrial lead slags of varying compositions were measured as a junction of temperature using a Brookfield viscometer. Based on the experimental data obtained from this study and based on other investigations reported in the literature, an expression was developed to correlate the viscosities of industrial lead silicate slags as a function of composition and temperature. The effect of each individual slag component on the variation of the slag viscosity is identified. The composition dependency of lead silicate slag viscosity is discussed. The calculated results using this viscosity expression are in good agreement with the measured data. Key words: Viscosity, Lead silicate slags

In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

Integration and synthesis of mine-site topography, geophysical, and geochemical data yields both two- dimensional and three-Amensional perspective models for the May Day mine located in the Cement Creek drainage near Silverton, Colorado. Induced polarization, geophysical data are spatially registered with geochemical data acquired from drill hole cuttings that are contoured m three-dimensional space, thereby permitting determination of the most metalliferous and sulfur rich zones of a waste pile. This spatial modeling application was developed to be a visually intuitive tool to aid in mine waste reclamation.

Surface and underground mining operations are often hindered by unknown tunnels and slopes and the precise locations of adjacent workings. Mine safety and planning are adversely affected especially in previously undermined areas where historical records are incomplete or nonexistent. The results of several ground penetrating radar (GPR) studies for the detection of known mine tunnels in underground coal, salt and gold mines are presented. A case study to locate unknown, abandoned mine workings at a surface gold mine successfully located all workings to a depth of 11 m (36 ft).

Extensive research and testing in commercial facilities has clearly demonstrated that heavy medium cyclones are the most effective process for cleaning a 0.6 x 0.15mm (28 x 100 Mesh) coal at low separating gravities, less than 1.35. This paper describes testing performed to deter- mine system characteristics at these lower gravities and the type of circuitry required to maximize performance. The results of these studies include both pilot and commercial scale tests of cleaning 0.6 x 015mm (28 x100M) coal.

The key takeaway of this study is the significant improvement in dust protection for roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. The optimized canopy air curtain (CAC), with a redesigned two-level manifold system, provides uniform airflow distribution that effectively reduces dust exposure. By enhancing the protection of operators from harmful respirable coal and silica dust, this technology can reduce the risk of diseases such as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis. The application of this optimized CAC design in real-life coal mining operations can dramatically improve worker health and safety by minimizing dust-related exposure, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and prolonging the lifespan of mining equipment by reducing dust accumulation.

Although explosives constitute only a small portion of a mine's total cost, the relative success of each blast has a tremendous effect on subsequent activities such as excavation, crushing, and equipment maintenance. Beginning in January of 1993, tests were carried out to determine whether productivity could be improved by replacing standard ammonium nitrate fuel oil mixtures (ANFO) with a high density, high performance blasting agent. The study was carried out at gold mines, coal mines, and cement quarries in Nevada, California, Colorado, and New Mexico. A wide variety of rock types and blasting conditions were encountered. Results showed that at most operations productivity was sufficiently improved to more than offset the increase in explosives cost. This resulted in a net reduction in mining cost. This paper presents a summary of these results.

In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. The paper discusses the background and theories of the conditions that led to the settlement of a Lovat TBM mining in an earth pressure balance mode on a recent project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The settlement occurred independent of human error and caused the cost of the project to increase 50 percent. The project was mined in the highly congested downtown area in alluvial and estuarine deposits, 7.6 m below the water table with a prescribed contract requirement that precluded dewatering in deference to concern for foundations of adjacent existing buildings.

Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, and the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following six years. To understand how this historic goal was achieved, this study analyzed hundreds of roof fall fatality reports covering five decades. It found that the immediate effect of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Coal Act) was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, fostered the necessary improvements in both the safety culture and the mining technology.
