"The static shear stiffness of an immersion joint subjected to combined compression and shear forces is investigated by experiments in a test set-up. To explore the performance of the immersion joint, the compression-shear loads, which are applied on a specimen according to test protocol, are determined based on real design situation. In this test, the main focus is on the steel shear keys and the rubber sealing. For the applied loading schemes, different levels of axial force, corresponding to the water depth of the joint, are considered as well as the changing amplitudes of the shear force. The force-displacement curve is obtained and the hysteresis is observed during the whole test. The joint‘s static shear stiffness is calculated, showing to increase linearly with respect to the magnitude of the axial force. Moreover, it is found that the rubber sealing has a significant influence on the shear behavior of the joint. INTRODUCTION An immersion joint is the connecting part between two adjacent elements of an immersed tunnel. Compared to that of the bulk elements, the stiffness of the immersion joint is relatively small. When it is subjected to shear actions, whether resulting from vertical foundation settlement or horizontal earthquake movements, shear-resistance of the joint is the main concern for a safe and reliable water-proof design. A flexible immersion joint, which normally consists of a rubber seal and shear keys installed at an element end is a common solution in practice. The way in which the shear keys and the rubber seal behave in the joint together is of vital importance to a comprehensive understanding of the shear behavior of the joint. However, in literature very few experiments on the shear behavior of immersed joints are available although the flexible joints are applied in practice for more than 50 years already. O. Kiyomiya (2004) carried out both a 3-dimensional experiment and a finite element analysis for a new type of flexible joint referred to as the Crown Seal. The results indicated that this new type of joint can be applied in practice because of the effective reduction of lateral deformation. A linear model was found in the paper of Anastasopoulos et al. (2007) to describe the behavior of the shear keys, which consider that the stiffness of the shear keys tends to infinity. R.S. van Oorsouw (2008) discussed the shear capacity of concrete shear keys in segmental joints, by analyzing the influences of reinforcement and friction force between shear keys."

The modern era of mineral exploration in Panama began in the late 1960's, resulting in porphyry copper discoveries at Petaquilla, Rio Pito, and Cerro Colorado. In contrast, Panama's early mining history (1503 to the early 1700's) was associated with gold. A single mine, Cana, in Darien Province, produced more than one Million ounces of gold in the colonial period. Except for episodic exploration activity by British and French interests, Panama's gold potential since the 1700's has been largely ignored.

A modified 3D Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) graph tree algorithm is presented that generates the complete set of nested maximum valued pits in a single run. This modified LG algorithm looks at the relative strength (average value) of the branches (groups of blocks). Pointers are allocated and pruned until there are no members of weaker (lower average value) branches overlying members of stronger (higher aver-age value) branches. The final set of strong branches are listed in order of decreasing strength. The pits they represent form the maximum valued convex hull for a single variable pit limit parameterization. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been applied at Newmont.

A stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model is developed based on mine site core log data to predict the horizontal and vertical permeabilities from the surface to the top of the caved zone at a longwall mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania. One hundred DFN realizations were generated to determine permeabilities for the isolated zone over an abutment pillar after mining the second panel. The results from this study show that the vertical and horizontal permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with field measurements, which indicates that the resultant permeability obtained from the field measurements is representative of the predicted permeabilities. With this agreement, the aperture data for other zones of the mine could be obtained from the geomechanical model — specifically, for the fractured zone over the gob. Based on the successful validation of this model, this model could be further developed to predict the permeability of the fractured zone over the gob with fracture aperture obtained from the geomechanical analysis. This will complete the fracture characterization of the overburden, which could be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a breach. This prediction could provide information on the associated risk of a casing breach and determination of methods to proactively prevent such an occurrence.

A few years ago, mining conventions, similar to this, around the country sported the theme, "The Survival of Mining." Today, the SME announces that "Mining is Alive." Being part of an industry that is simply alive is not very exciting. We can do better! Our challenge must be to flourish, blossom, maximize our potential and expand our horizons. The pace of rejuvenating this industry is still woefully inadequate. The new generation of mining industry leaders recognizes the urgent need for bold operational changes?changes in the way we deal with our employees? changes in the way we achieve productivity? and changes in the way we reward our employees for productivity.

Arizona embraces portions of two major western-U.S. physiographic-geologic provinces and a smaller, local one. These exert fundamental control over the geologic framework and associated earth-material resources and potential. The Mogollon Rim diagonally crosses the State and separates the Colorado Plateau Province to the northeast from the Transition Zone and Basin and Range Province to the southwest. More than 90 percent of the population, production of nonfuel minerals, agricultural land, and water resources are in the Basin and Range part of the State. In 1981 Arizona was ranked number one in the Nation with respect to the value ($2.56 billion) of nonfuel-mineral production. About 8.2 percent of this amount ($212.9 million) can be attributed to nonmetallic (industrial) materials. Although a diversity of nonmetallic substances is produced and some are exported, the bulk is utilized within the State and is directly related to market growth. Since 1950 there has been a fourfold increase in Arizona's population, a concomitant twelvefold jump in sand-gravel production (tons), and a twentyfold increase in "stone" production. New industries developed during this time include cement, salt (and storage of liquid petroleum gas products in solution cavities in salt), zeolite, hydrofrac sand, vitrified clay pipe, crushed marble products (teed additive, pool sand, roofing granules, etc.), and "rock" wool. Most of these newer industries serve out-of-State as well as in-State markets. In 1981 at least 225 industrial mineral or rock deposits were being worked to produce about 10 tons of material per Arizona resident per year. In 1980 the relative values of basic industrial minerals produced in the State, by major group, were cement and lime (51.6 percent); gravel (26.5 percent); sand (11.8 percent); stone (4.6 percent); and others (5.5 percent). Detailed knowledge of the nonmetallic rock-and-mineral content of most Arizona ranges and basins is lacking. Exploration opportunities in this sun-belt growth region appear encouraging.

At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral investigation of about 85,470 acres of the Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area, to determine mineral resources and mineral resource potential. The study area is in Lake County Oregon, about 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. Fieldwork was conducted in 1986, 1988, and 1989. Geologically, the study area lies on the northwest edge of the Basin and Range physiographic province, a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins characterized by interior drainage. Consolidated rocks are mostly Tertiary basalt and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. Low-lying areas are covered by Quaternary alluvial-fan, sand-dune, playa, lacustrine, and landslide deposits. The principal structural features are normal faults that have large vertical offsets; these faults are typically concentrated at the margins of large horst and graben. The 34,310-acre "additional," or western part of the area was mainly studied in 1988 and borders the east shore of saline Summer Lake. In this portion of the study area there is potential for undiscovered resources of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate as well as by-products, which include magnesium compounds, salts, potash, bromine, lithium, and tungsten associated with brines. No energy or mineral resources were identified in the study area, but brines within lake and playa sediments contain concentrations of chemical components suitable for the production of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate. Possible by-products include potash, salts, bromine, lithium, magnesium compounds, and tungsten. Limestone from the study area could be used in the recovery process of brine components or agricultural uses. The study area includes thermal springs and lies within 2 miles of the Summer Lake Known Geothermal Resource Area. Local production of geothermal power by the binary process may be economically feasible. Soda ash, soda ash products, and boric acid are widely used in fluxing metals, and have important applications and markets in the aluminum industry in the northwest and the developing Chinese counterpart. Evaporite commodities are essential to many "backbone" industries, and to many new applications and advanced materials. Markets for brine mineral products appear to be undergoing steady and strong growth, especially in the Pacific Northwest and in Pacific Rim countries. Soda ash produced near the study area would be 55 percent closer by rail to marine export at Portland, Oregon, than trona deposits of the Green River District (Wyoming). Soda ash and a daughter product, caustic soda, and sodium borohydride will receive increased application in the bleaching of paper pulp for environmental reasons. Caustic soda, used in many industrial processes, is more environmentally friendly when derived from soda ash than when produced from sodium chloride salt, because of the absence of a chlorine by-product. Producing soda ash from brines, a type of in situ" mining, can be done with minimal environmental degradation, and mining natural soda ash is environmentally as well as economically preferable to synthetic soda ash production.

Introduction History. Vat leaching operations began in October 1953. Since that time, about 4.2 million tpy of oxide ore averaging 0.72% copper have been treated. Economic conditions, improved operating methods, and increased production facilities have allowed the ore grade to be reduced over the years. The average ore grade was 0.84% Cu during the 1950s, 0.68% in the 1960s, and was 0.50%, or below, during the 1970s. By 1961 some 35 million tons of oxide ore had been removed from the mine, exposing the underlying sulfide ore body. A 5,000¬ tpd concentrator was constructed and put into operation to treat the sulfide ore in November 1961.1 The original crushing plants were used for both oxide and sulfide ores, but by adding a third crushing shift, six days per week, the total ore treated was raised from 12,000¬17,000 tpd. Dwindling oxide ore reserves prompted expansion of the concen¬trator to 13,500 tpd in 19672 so that exhaustion of known reserves of both ores would occur at nearly the same time. Again, no additional crushing facilities were added during the expansion. It was anticipated that the treatment rate of oxide ore would be reduced from 12,000 to about 9,000 tpd. Instead, the addition of two crushing shifts per week and improved operating procedures have increased the treatment rate to 26,500 tpd-13,000 tpd to the leaching plant and 13,500 tpd of sulfide ore treated in the concentrator. Geology. The Yerington ore body is a disseminated porphyry copper deposit where a quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive contains the major part of the ore values, with some copper mineralization found in the adjacent granodiorite and other rocks. The geology of the Yerington Mine was aptly described by J. R. Wilson (Mining Congress Journal, June 1963). The ore body is one of few porphyries where geologic conditions were optimum for the formation of an important concentration of oxidized ore with minimum economic effect of secondary enrichment. The principal mineral in the oxidized zone is chrysocolla, which irreg¬ularly occurs dispersed throughout the rock and as narrow seams along fissures. The grade of the ore in the oxidized zone is generally the same as in the primary sulfide below, although some massive concentrations do occur as vein-like fissures and as filling of breccia zones. Cuprite, tenorite, melaconite, malachite, and azurite occur but are not abundant. Lying between the chrysocolla horizon and the primary sulfide is a transition zone whose limits are irregular but seldom with vertical range exceeding 50 ft. Chalcocite, cuprite, melaconite, native copper, and chrysocolla occur superimposed on the primary sulfides. Chalcocite replacement of chalcopyrite, as well as secondary chalcocite, do occur. The primary sulfide minerals are chalcopyrite and pyrite, with minor amounts of bornite and covellite. There are no appreciable gold or silver values, and molybdenite has rarely been noted.

INTRODUCTION Safety must be a primary consideration in the design and construction of tunnels. Tunnel construction has historically been considered a high-risk business. During the construction of the 14.8 kilometer (9.25) mile St. Gotthard Tunnel in the Swiss Alps in the 1870s, 310 lives were lost and another 877 workers permanently disabled. In more recent days, two tunnel construction accidents in 1971, one in Michigan and one in California, claimed the lives of 38 workers. Prior to 1971, most regulations governing safety in tunnel construction were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These included a 1941 Bulletin 439, "Some Essential Safety Factors for Tunneling" and a 1968 Bulletin 644 which updated Bulletin 439. In 1970, the United States passed the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) which became effective in early 1971. That act covered all sorts of workplace activities including Tunnels and Shafts in 29 CFR 1926.800. In 1989, a revised and renamed 29 CFR 1926.800 was issued for Underground Construction. Some of the changes introduced in this rule were the outgrowth of improvements made in the California and Michigan codes after the 1971 accidents. These new regulations are the "Rules to Live By" for tunnel construction in the United States and are generally accepted as appropriate for tunnel construction throughout the world.

"The cPlant is a modular flotation plant which has been designed to minimize capital expenditure and risk. The plant is based on a number of standard modules, for both flotation and ancillary equipment, which can be configured to give the required flowsheet for the ore being treated. All of these modules can be rapidly deployed and erected onsite, minimizing not only engineering time and site preparation but reducing the time taken to get the plant up and generating revenue. Given the paradigm shift in flotation circuit design that has been employed in the cPlant it may allow smaller, previously uneconomic deposits to be exploited and create a more cost efficient upgrade route for existing plants. This paper introduces the cPlant and presents a case study comparing EPC cost and development timing of a cPlant against a traditional flotation circuit design. INTRODUCTION In the development of any mining project the cost associated with process plant engineering, equipment procurement and installation can affect the financial viability of a project. This is of special significance for smaller scale mining projects which perhaps don’t have the mine-life or revenue generation to justify the payback on a modern processing facility. Listening to customer feedback and understanding the challenges that small to mid-sized projects can face lead Outotec to the development of the cPlant. Modularization of mineral processing plants isn’t a new idea with a number of examples being reported in literature for gravity gold (Cabot, Trudel and Cabot, 2001; Gray et al., 2006), dense medium separation (September and Abate, 2006) and even hydrometallurgy (Saario et al., 2013). All these plants have been developed to try to improve on the traditional economics associated with fixed processing plants. Using standardized modules to construct a plant reduces engineering time and design costs which can both be beneficial to the outcome of a project. In addition the modular nature of the plant lends itself to transport to remote sites and rapid installation with only minimal site preparation required. A plant of modular design also has several other advantages over its conventional cousins. Firstly it is relatively easy to expand by duplicating existing modules. Secondly the modules can be treated as building blocks for the process and rearranged if a change in conditions requires flowsheet adjustment. Thirdly, there is potential to disassemble and remove the modular units at the end of the mine life. The ability to easily disassemble, re-pack and transport the plant to a new location not only is important to the long term environmental footprint of an operation but can also be seen as a bonus to an operator that has a number of small ore deposits. If applied in this way modular plants have the potential to create a whole new operating model for previously unviable ore deposits."

Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. Thermovision monitoring of surface temperature has been examined for the purpose of detection of spontaneous combustion of early stage. Measurements were carried out in bituminous and subbituminous coal mines. It was found that surface temperature heterogenities can be considered as common phenomenon in mine openings. However, the most of the observed temperature heterogenities were not connected with coal spontaneous combustion of early stage. These, so called [non-spontaneous combustion] temperature heterogenities in surface of mine openings were found to be caused by: l. Different conditions of heat transfer between opening surface and air stream; 2. Low temperature (natural) oxidation of coal; 3. Dissipated heat loses of working machine. Sites of early stage spontaneous combustion of coal were characterized by: 1. More significant, local rise in surface temperature comparing with low temperature coal oxidation; 2. Evolution of carbon monoxide with local concentration near the surface of such site more than about 15 ppm (bituminous coals) or 30 ppm (subbituminous coals). INTRODUCTION Mine fires are a serious hazard to life and result in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Thus, great attention is paid to investigation of new methods enabling already early detection of self-heating of coal. The earlier a fire is observed, the easier would it be to deal with. Detection methods used in coal mines are mainly based on: 1. [Mine air analysis]. Changes in composition of mine air are examined. Products of spontaneous heating of coal, not being present in mine air under normal conditions, are considered as indicators of anomalous behaviour of coal (carbon monoxide, unsaturated hydrocarbons) (Mackenzie-Wood and Strang, 1990). 2. [Temperature measurements]. Sites of higher temperature level comparing surroundings are looking for underground using various direct or indirect methods of temperature measurements. This paper summarizes experience from thermovision monitoring, as one of the latest indirect temperature measurement technique, used for the purpose of early detection of self-heating of coal in mine openings. INFRARED THERMOVISION Infrared thermovision device of AGEMA Infrared systems AB (Sweden) was used for the in situ measurements. The constant value of emissivity factor, 0.95, was pre-set as the most probable level of emissivities of coal and rocks in mine conditions.

This paper presents the design solution for an actual case of settlement tanks, for a wastewater treatment plant under construction, actually founded on swelling clay (the nature of which had not been appreciated beforehand) and suffering considerable damage as a result. Two points of interest prompted the use of a numerical model as an alternative approach to the traditional method of analysis: First, the desire to compare the in situ measured deformation and displacement of the tanks with the figures calculated by the numerical model. Second the need to check the validity of the suggested solution as a remedy, i.e. the replacement of a certain thickness of clay by graded material.

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have studied the influence of headgate side ventilation controls near the longwall start-up room on the formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground coal longwall bleeder ventilated gobs. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study the formation of methane-air mixtures in the gob, start-up room, and bleeder entries. The relative change in size and location of EGZs are examined in response to ventilation controls in the headgate side bleeder entries near the start-up room. Modeling suggests that adjustments to the ventilation controls can be made to minimize the size of the EGZ. However the EGZ may form in or around active working areas regardless of the ventilation control settings. Research found regulators on the crosscuts into start-up room and first entry inby can force air into to crosscuts outby the start-up room causing more air to flow through the gob. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall mine ventilation systems may operate with either a bleeder ventilated gob or a progressively sealed gob. Bleeder ventilated gobs must meet the standards for safe operation of the bleeder system by examining bleeder system effectiveness. As defined in the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Program Policy Letter (PPL) No. P13-V-12 (MSHA 2013), the pillared area or gob is “any area where a reduction in pillar size has occurred during retreat mining” and includes the “caved and broken material, the interstices within the caved material, and the open spaces surrounding the caved material.” The PPL further states that the intended purpose of ventilating the gob is “to protect active workings from the hazards of methane accumulations …” The requirements for operating a bleeder system as stated in The United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 2013) Title 30 §75.334(b) is to pass ventilation air though the gob “and to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures [from the gob] away from active workings and into a return air course …” where the concentration cannot exceed 2 percent methane (CFR 30 § 75.323). Further clarification of the bleeder system as described in the PPL states the following: “A bleeder system includes the area from which pillars are wholly or partially recovered, bleeder entries, bleeder connectors, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air movement through the area. Bleeder entries are air courses designed and maintained as part of the bleeder system.”"

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in 1983 in Montana's Gravelly Range, about 40 km (25 miles) south of Ennis. Initial drilling indicated a 910-kt (1-million st) ore body of high purity talc. Preliminary analyses on ore cuttings included chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. Results indicated it was similar to talc currently being marketed from Montana and it would probably have good commercial value. Based on the positive test results, a test pit was made and a 180-t (200-st) sample of ore was mined. A portion of the ore was ground to various particle sizes and evaluated to determine its strengths, weaknesses, and other characteristics. The deposit is located close to the Cyprus Yellowstone deposit. It was therefore believed that Montana Talc ore may possess many of the same characteristics. Testing and analyses showed the talc to have a high purity and an extremely large surface area, even for Montanatype tales. The ore was also situated in a massive deposit, indicating low cost mining. While the lab analyses were encouraging, the true evidence would be obtained from commercial tests in the marketplace. About 91 t (100 st) of ore were ground to product specifications for pitch control, paint filler, and plastics filler. Consumers were contacted and requested to evaluate the sample talc products. A major trial for the talc as a pitch control agent was arranged at a Northeast paper mill. The trial indicated the new Montana Talc product performed as well or better than the current standard in the industry. In fact, due to a minor modification in the compaction process to make the transport of the talc easier, the product had substantially less dust than the currently used product. The operating people at the paper mill requested that management purchase this talc. Trials were also run at paint plants for use as a pigment filler. And the talc was fabricated into a number of plastics compounds. The initial product tests were largely positive and provided encouragement to proceed with the project. Different grinding mills were used and their performance evaluated. Significant data were generated by the custom grinders. They indicated how the Montana Talc ore ground and the particle size distributions produced at different grinding settings. Encouraged by the positive marketing tests, a prefeasibility study was commissioned. A talc grinding plant and mine plans were designed and capital and operating costs estimated. Initial economics showed an attractive return. The operating costs were among the lowest in the industry. The positive economics, along with the excellent results by the products in the marketing tests to the paper, paint, and plastics industries, led to the recommendation to proceed with the project. Plant construction began in June of 1985. The Montana Talc Co. (MTC) analyzed the data from the commercial tests. Based on the product's outstanding performance and the uniqueness of its high purity and platy structure, a strategy was developed to position the company as a premium talc supplier.

"The design of the tunnels at Bond Street Station includes a final sprayed concrete fireproofing layer. The performance of this layer was verified by a program of testing to Crossrail’s KT24 specification, which proved that a dosage of 1kg/m³ polypropylene fibers and a layer thickness of 50mm would be sufficient to limit spalling in the event of a fire. Application of this thin layer was achieved using a state of the art spraying robot, with the ability to scan the profile and automatically apply a uniform layer of concrete. To provide assurance and calibrate this spraying robot, BFK developed a bespoke survey system for checking SCL thicknesses in the field. This provided an instant independent check of the spraying robot and allowed areas of inadequate thickness to be rectified without risk of cold joints. This paper describes the practical application of the fireproofing layer and how design compliance was ensured. INTRODUCTION Fire is one of the most serious risks to a tunnel. The nature of tunnels — being long enclosed spaces — can increase the intensity of a fire, and make fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult. The damage that can be caused has been demonstrated by a number of historic tunnel fires, such as the Channel Tunnel fires of 1996 and 2008, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire in 1999. Without any intervention, the high temperatures in a fire create thermal stresses and a build-up of vapor pressure within the pores of concrete, which eventually exceed the tensile strength and trigger explosive spalling. Spalling exposes the core of the section to severe temperatures, leading to a loss of concrete and steel reinforcement strength or further spalling of successive layers. The concrete used in tunnel linings is particularly susceptible to explosive spalling, due to its low permeability achieved by the addition of microsilica (Bailey 2011). The sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels on Crossrail have been designed to resist the worst anticipated fire in operation, in order to prevent collapse and minimize damage to the structure. The design called for a system of passive fire protection, the efficacy of which was validated by the contractor through a testing regime. It was critical that the application on site reflected the test conditions, which demanded special control of the profile and thickness of the lining. In order to meet these constraints on tolerances and quality, BAM Ferrovial Kier joint venture (BFK) developed a reliable method of working with the Meyco Logica spraying robot, and a bespoke survey system for accurately checking thicknesses in the field. These innovations are the focus of this paper."
