Safety of mine ramps begins with an analysis of stress that almost certainly must be done numerically to take into account ramp geometry, route geology, rock properties, and pre-ramp stresses. The popular finite element method serves analysis purposes quite well. As a practical matter several obstacles to implementation need to be addressed including collection of rock and joint properties along the proposed ramp route, selection of ramp type, and specification of cross-section shape, size, and route grade. Additionally, stresses along the proposed route must be specified, preferably from in situ measurements. One need not be an expert in numerical methods to proceed to ramp design, although a background in mechanics of materials and rock mechanics is essential, and a first course in numerical methods is quite helpful. The necessary software is easily brought to the design task, more accurately, to the task of design evaluation. This software also addresses other important mine design problems including design of safe (1) main entries in stratified ground, (2) barrier pillars, (3) bleeder entries, (4) inter-panel barrier pillars, (5) room and pillar mines, (6) shafts, and (7) “tunnels” (Pariseau 2022).

This paper identifies physical conditions responsible for past instability of the Main Hill area in Kennecott Copper Corporation's Bingham Canyon Mine, Bingham Canyon, Utah, and describes successful stabilization techniques employed in this slide zone. Geotechnical highlights of recent slides are presented, including monitoring, geological engineering data collection, hydrology, physical rock properties, and stability analyses. Local conditions responsible for slope movement in the Main Hill zone are: (1) high pore water pressure that causes a substantial decrease in real and effective material strengths; (2) continuous structural systems that allow sliding in the more competent rock zones; and (3) broad areas containing fractured, altered , and incompetent rock and soil- like materials. The failure mode is structurally controlled and involves a circular-type soil failure in the toe region initiated by excessive pore water pressure. A surface mapping method is presented which assigns rock mass quality on the basis of block size and rock substance strength. This site characterization technique has successfully predicted slide boundaries and failure modes; used in conjunction with laboratory determined shear strengths, it has provided basic input for calculating slope safety factors in the Main Hill slide zone.

This paper describes the results of field tests conducted on a 5x25m bench face to evaluate several new concepts for improving smooth wall blasting. These ideas involved the use of notched boreholes to direct the fractures and unconventional types and placements of explosives. The notches were made with a mechanical broaching tool, a water jet and with shaped charges. Borehole pressures were measured with an inexpensive and expendable pressure transducer developed for this program. The testing showed that at hole spacings 38% greater than normal practice, notched holes with half the normal loading density produced equivalent results.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

This topic addresses historic and current techniques of excavating, supporting and lining tunnels of 4 m (13.1 ft) and smaller. Special considerations relate to the economics of working in close quarters and the sizes of tunnel which achieve the required facility in the optimum economic manner are discussed. The excavation discussion includes TBM, conventional and special techniques for hard rock, soft ground, subaqueous, free and compressed air tunnels. Internal and external support methods discusses timbering, steel ribs, bolting, strapping, shotcreting, grouting, and freezing. Lining methods include cast-in-place concrete, concrete pipe, segmented linings, shotcrete, and others.

Mixed cable waste, which amounts to more than 200,000 tpy in Germany, is subjected to recycling. In most cases cable recycling means only recovering copper and/or aluminum metals. The remaining cable waste contains nearly 3-8% of the reusable materials, and is disposed of in landfills. Aluminum is recovered within copper products and leads to lower product prices. Preliminary laboratory tests show that the use of shaking hydro-tables as well as electrostatic separators result in less than 1 % of metals in the residual material. The products are high in grade at metal recoveries of more than 85%. Furthermore, applying a modified electrostatic separator may also lead to an efficient Cu-Al separation. The separation efficiency amounts to up to 95%.

The new Lyon-Turin railway project involves the construction of a 57 km twin-tube tunnel between France and Italy. Pini France (project leader) and Systra-SWS are the designers of Construction Site 8 (CO8). This part of the project includes the construction of the tunnel portal on the Villard-Clément platform, two 2.8 km long tubes of the base tunnel in the direction of Saint Martin la Porte, the cross-passages between tubes and the niches. This paper presents the general approach followed to design the temporary support for the base tunnel, cross-passages, and technical rooms. The design of the temporary support accounts for the variability of the ground and water conditions, the excavation attended behavior, the construction planning and the identified geological hazards that could be encountered along the alignment. Particular attention is paid to the intersections between the tunnels both in terms of numerical modelling and construction methods and phases. Two types of intersections are present in the project: the intersections between the cross-passages and the base tunnel and the intersections between the base tunnel and the niches. 3D models have been developed for the tunnel intersections.

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. This paper quantifies in universal units (energy units), the annual decrease in the mineral endowment of the planet. This is done for some important extracted non-fuel minerals, namely aluminium, cobalt, chromium, copper, gold, lead, uranium and zinc and is compared with the depletion figures of conventional fossil fuels. The results of this study reveal that each year, the decrease of the global non-fuel mineral bonus provided by Nature is 2 to 3 orders of magnitude greater than the loss associated to the burning of fossil fuels. Particularly for 2008, the depletion in mineral wealth of the studied commodities was about 20 times greater than that of fossil fuels. The assessment methodology is based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics. It quantifies the useful energy (exergy) required to concentrate a mineral from a completely dispersed state in the crust, to the conditions of composition and concentration found in the mines. Exergy can be a useful measure for quantifying the mineral depletion caused by man, as it takes into account the main physical features that make minerals valuable: composition and concentration. This analysis enhances and puts numbers to the importance and necessity of material reuse and recycling.

Introduction It is generally accepted as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulps from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" of relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that coarse gold particles can contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations. But, while the process of sampling is probably the major source of error, the analytical process cannot be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. To maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must also be kept in control. One method of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard materials, whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared, nor can they be prepared, to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for both preparation (i.e., comminution and splitting) and fire assaying and then come to conclusions only about the fire-assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would, in most cases, completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay-standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process. Because the objective of the assay standard is to provide information about the fire assaying, it is necessary to control the sampling error of the standard material, so that it is only a minor constituent of the discrepancies observed in any assay results. To do this requires that the particle size of the standard material be reduced to a point where the relative standard deviation of the sampling error (i.e... the standard deviation of the errors divided by the average gold content of the material) is 2% or less. For all but very homogeneous mineralization, this means that the material must be reduced to 100% -150 mesh before the sampling errors are adequately controlled. However, even reducing the particle size can contribute to sampling problems. The liberation of gold may cause segregation that can cause large sampling fluctuations that are not easily controlled while maintaining the desired grade. Because, in most cases, the standard material would already be in the "pulp" state when it is submitted to a lab for assay, it is not possible to entirely conceal the nature of the sample from the lab. This is a problem inherent in using assay standard material. Because of the contribution of sampling to error generation in the assay process, the use of "coarse" material does not solve the problem of submitting a totally "blind" standard to the lab. In the sections that follow, the selection, preparation, testing and use of gold fire assay standard material is discussed. While some may dismiss the production of standard material as folly, it is possible to produce and utilize standard material to stabilize and improve the fire-assay process to produce more reliable assay results. Material selection It is desirable to use material that has as nearly the same metallurgical characteristics as the samples with which the standards will be included. However, this is usually difficult. For many reasons, including the particle size at which a significant amount of the gold mineral is liberated, the sampling characteristics of even -150-mesh material may preclude the use of geologically and metallurgically similar ore as a standard. It is usually easier to get material having desirable grade characteristics with the necessary sampling properties than it is to find geologically and metallurgically similar material with the required sampling characteristics. High-grade standards are especially difficult to find and prepare. This is because, as grade increases, the size of the gold particles usually increases. Larger gold particles are liberated and tend to segregate during comminution, and the homogeneity of the material cannot be maintained. For grades much above 3 g/t (0.088 oz/ton), it is very difficult to find material that has the proper sampling properties. Old mill tailings are likely candidates for assay standards. Some of these have sufficiently homogeneous mineral contents, so that the sampling errors can be effectively controlled. Where mill tailings are either not available or are not acceptable, mineralization that has exhibited homogeneous results in reassays of the pulp material is also a good candidate for the standard. Finally, the mineralized rock being sampled may (and should) be used if adequate homogeneity in the -150mesh material exists. "Adequate" ("acceptable") homogeneity is defined below.) Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers' nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

Since 1956, when Broadbent and Callcott 1 proposed to analyze breakage processes by matrix methods, several authors and their co-workers have proposed various models of grinding that, in principle, could lead to fully automated grinding circuits. In particular, Meloy and Gaudin2, Gardner and Austin3, Kelsall and Reid4, Neloy and Bergstrom5, Callcott and Lynch 6, and Draper and Lynch have, by either computer simulation or by experimental data, or by a combination of the two, verified that comminution is reasonably well described by at least two functions: a selection function and a breakage function. The stage concept proposed by Callcott and Lynch6 requires that a classification matrix be included to completely describe breakage in an open circuit rod mill. The purpose of this work, portions of which are herein described, is to accumulate sufficient information on the breakage characteristics of quartz and magnetite in an open circuit rod mill, so that several of the theoretical and experimental approaches proposed in the literature can be compared with each other. Data is being gathered to compare the experimental method used by Kelsall and paid against the stage approach of Callcott and Lynch.

Sedimentation in highly, flocculated suspensions of fine particles, such as clays, occurs through individual settling units (flocs) that have very open structures and correspondingly low densities (typically less than 5% solids by volume). Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

Open pit mines require substantial capital investment at the beginning of the operation and replacement investment at later years. The objective of obtaining the highest possible return on investment in a mining project can only be achieved with an efficient long term production plan. This plan consists of optimally determining four principal elements: 1) the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, 2) the specific blocks to be mined each year, 3) the optimum mine life, and 4) the ultimate pit limits, which delineate the total reserve to be mined. The existing methodologies only provide solutions to one or two elements, by assuming the others known. Furthermore, the cost of mining each block in the deposit is assumed to be known and independent of the production schedule. The four elements of production planning are interrelated and the cost of mining any block is a function of the production schedule. The ultimate goal of this study, ,whose first steps are' discussed in this paper, is to develop a solution methodology that can simultaneously optimize all four elements of the production planning problem in open pit mines without making a priori assumption on any of the four elements.

Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two-and three-entry gate-road systems at a deep underground coal mine located in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau of Mines hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in roof falls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

It is essential for a. mining company to determine an optimal mining strategy which will maximize the return on investment. In the case of Placer Development Ltd., the Lerch-Grossman three-dimensional optimization technique has been implemented on a digital computer to assist in the determination of such a strategy. It is the purpose of this chapter to explain and illustrate the methodology of the Placer Development Ltd. computer system with emphasis on the feasibility phase of a mine's development. In the Placer Development Ltd. strategy determination process, it is essential that certain objectives be considered: 1) There must be some means of constructing a realistic computer model of an ore body which gives a significant weight to geological constraints. 2) Data must be accurate and quantifiable. 3) Computer solutions must be unique, i.e., approximation or iteration methods of determining optimal solutions are undesirable. A method must be used which, when given fixed parameters and data, yields a mathematically sound unique solution. The following material is a presentation of how these objectives have been implemented. The flow of this outline will be from the general to the specific, with an example application.

In 1982, the US Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) to provide for the development of an underground repository for spent nuclear fuel. This development will be managed by the US Department of Energy. In 1986, the President selected three areas for site characterization to determine their suitability for the development of an underground repository. Those sites were: (1) a site in volcanic tuff located at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, (2) a site in bedded salt located in Deaf Smith County in Texas, and (3) a site in basalt located in Hanford, WA. At present, conceptual repository designs are being developed for each site. A key element of a repository design is the underground ventilation system required to support construction, nuclear waste emplacement, and potential waste retrieval. This paper describes the preliminary ventilation system designed for the repository in tuff. The concept provides separate ventilation systems for the construction and waste emplacement activities. The paper further describes the means by which acceptable environmental conditions will be reestablished to allow reentry into previously closed rooms for the purpose of inspection, maintenance, or retrieval.

To evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening, a 9-m- (30-ft-) long drift was constructed in the unsaturated fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing finite volumes of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

Some attempts were made to recover gold from aqueous systems using immobilized persimmon tannin. This adsorbent adsorbed gold from solutions containing hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) with high efficiency, whereas there was minimal adsorption from solutions containing gold (I) sodium thiomalate and sodium dicyanoaurate (I). The adsorption of gold was rapid, and was affected by the pH of the solution, temperature, external gold concentration and amount of adsorbent. Adsorbed gold was easily desorbed with 1 M thiourea solution, indicating that immobilized persimmon tannin can be repeatedly re-used for the recovery of gold using adsorption-desorption cycles.
