The use of paste technology for underground cemented backfill is widely accepted in the mining industry today as a potentially cost effective alternative to cemented rock and hydraulic slurry fill. While paste backfill is not the appropriate backfilling method for all mines, there are presently 23 operating tailings paste backfill plants throughout the world. This new technology has gained increasing acceptance as a backfill method over the last decade and its use is now expanding into the surface disposal of tailings using the stacked, thickened tailings disposal concept. Over the next 18 months there will be ten new paste plants commissioned in the world. Five of these ten plants will be used exclusively for surface tailings disposal or a combination of surface disposal and underground backfill production. The thickened tailings disposal concept, developed by Dr. Eli Robinsky in the early 1970's, has been in use for decades at several mine sites throughout the world (Kidd Creek Mine site in Northern Ontario), but always utilizing non segregating high density tailings slurry central discharge, stacked tailings placement. With the use of a higher solids content paste, the typical 2-degree beach angle can be increased to ten degrees or more with no runoff water and minimal shrinkage crack development through desiccation. This paper presents the design of the first mine to implement true surface paste disposal, Barrick Gold Corp's Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania. The paste system will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2001 allowing performance data to be collected to define the full potential of paste technology for surface tailings disposal.

The recent history of the mercury market results almost entirely from U.S. Government actions. Its derived demand has been curtailed by U.S.E.P.A. mandates; its supply has been augmented by U.S.D.L.A. controlled stockpile releases. The resultant prices have altered its market structure, impacted mercury mining, refiners and recyclers, and affected international production and markets. From a marketplace product mercury is rapidly becoming a disposal problem. Other minerals may follow in its wake. This paper reviews developments in demand, particularly in relation to environmental constraints. Supply side impacts are considered. The impact of stockpiles, both as a market overhang and as a potential supply is reviewed. Government stockpile disposal activity is emphasized, but the size, estimated disposal rate, and quality of the private stockpiles are considered, as is the potential availability of additional material from shut-in mines.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2005 was estimated to be 653 kt (720,000 st). This was a 5-percent increase compared with 2004. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $179 million in 2005. Production was from six companies with 12 processing facilities in four states. California and Nevada were the principal producing states. They accounted for about 70 percent of U.S. production in 2005. U.S. diatomite exports were about 144 kt (159,000 st). Imports were negligible. The internal structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an excellent raw material for filtration, absorbent and filler applications. Filtration, especially the purification of beer, liquors and wine and the cleansing of greases and oils, continued to be the largest end use for diatomite. Other applications include the removal of microbial contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses in public water systems, and the filtration of human blood plasma. The use of diatomite as fillers and in pharmaceutical applications, including the filtration of human blood plasma, continues to increase as has its use as an insecticide base and as pozzolan. The relative rank of end uses of diatomite were filter aids, 75 percent; fillers, 11 percent; absorbents, 7 percent and other (mostly cement manufacture), 7 percent.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. My subject is gold price forecasting and monitoring as an important aspect of gold marketing. While I 'm specifically addressing gold, it is understandable that many other commodities could be readily substituted. Gold marketing must be studied as three distinct processes, and it is my intention to cover each of these processes in turn. First I?ll cover the process of gold price monitoring and forecasting in some detail. In order to select a method, or combination of methods, to be used to sell gold a determination of the future price profile is essential. The profitability of the sales effort will be determined, to a large extent, by how accurately the future price behavior of the gold market has been forecast.

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These methods included a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal extraction side of the long wall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. The translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust control effectiveness up to 60 m downstream of the shearer in both the laboratory experiments and a long wall field evaluation, provided the mesh barrier remains relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust control effectiveness in the laboratory and subsequently was not field tested.

An 18.5 km (12 mile) long tunnel is being driven by four Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBMs) of 4.7 m (15.5 ft.) diameter through alluvial sand, gravel, silt and clay above and below the groundwater table in Los Angeles beneath buildings, railroads, freeways and the L.A. River. Continuous automatic data recording of TBM operation and field inspectors' records, accompanied by monitoring of 5,000 surface reference points and 268 borehole extensometers were used to obtain information. The paper explains the reason for selecting the method of EPB-tunneling to ensure stability of the tunnel and meeting of environmental requirements, and presents data collected to monitor and demonstrate the performance of the TBM sin the different ground conditions encountered.

The Bureau of Mines investigated rapid bubble-pulp separation to improve flotation kinetics. A shallow-depth froth separator was employed to quickly recover the mineral-laden bubbles from a mixture of ore, water, and air bubbles. The shallow depth minimized the rising distance required to recover even the smallest size bubbles (100 ~m). Therefore, the slurry remained in the unit only long enough to recover the bubbles before the pulp exited through the conical bottom. Joining this unit with a rapid bubble-particle attachment unit, a rapid flotation system was formed that floated silica from phosphate in one-fifth of the retention time for conventional mechanical cells. The hydrodynamics of the rapid flotation system along with fundamental parameters for scale-up are presented in this paper.

The I-35 Capital Expressway (CapEx) Central Drainage Tunnels will serve as a stormwater collection system for the forthcoming I-35 Capital Express Central reconstruction project through downtown Austin, Texas. The schematic level concept design included three tunnels, 10 to 14 ft ID, totaling 26,000 LF. Constructability reviews during design development indicated issues with the concept design including phasing of construction, conicts with future retaining walls, staging area concerns, and signicant mixed face tunneling. The design was updated to mitigate these risks. The revised design includes two tunnels, both 22-ft ID and totaling 33,000 LF, that will be mined almost entirely in rock.

Rehabilitation work at the Cameron Run Tunnels entailed the restoration of seven heavily deformed, approximately 69 m long, steel liner plate supported culverts through a CSX Railroad embankment near Alexandria, Virginia. A custom fabricated expander, equipped with four 200-ton hydraulic jacks on two expansion arms was used to push back the liner plates encroaching into the proposed tunnel profile and install the steel set support. In a second phase the tunnels were then lined with 16 cm of fiber reinforced shotcrete. Geotechnical instruments both in the tunnels and on the railroad embankment were used to monitor the effects of the rehabilitation work on the two CSX Railroad tracks above the tunnels. Freight and passenger trains were required to run uninterrupted and at maximum speeds throughout construction.

L. Cope Welcome. I am pleased to see so many people interested enough to stay until this last session of the last afternoon of the convention. Of the people on the panel here, everyone has done everything in placer mining, but we have tried to sectionalize it with each one of us taking a particular portion. Any one of us could probably answer any question. I am very pleased to see some well experienced people in the audience. To start the discussion, Joe, can you give us a brief comparison of pit and drill sampling? J. Wojcik They both have their place. If you expect your deposit is something that is going to have widespread fairly uniform grades, then the pits may be the way to go. If you are going to have something you have to trace for several miles down the river valley, you can't do it with pits and do a proper sampling job. C. McLain Joe, the end result of all of this is to go ahead and mine it if it is a deposit. Do you try to relate your drilling results to something in mining itself against the recovery, because the drilling in different types of ground will give you different kinds of recoveries, and mining in the end is what you are going to do? Do you try to relate this to your mining method?

I. CONCEPT MARTA's Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta's central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta's showcase business/commercial complex. The most famous landmark of the city of Graz (Austria) is the clock tower on the castle hill. An underground chamber was built as a multifunctional structure beneath this landmark. The required structure was designed as cavern. The overburden to the clock tower in the north side of the cavern was only 30 m. To allow access from the city to the chamber and the clock tower, a vertical shaft was built near the cavern. Rock excavation was by drill and blast method. The pilot shaft was made by the raise-boring method. Because the location of the building site was in the center of Graz, special care was taken to minimize deformations and vibrations so as to protect surrounding buildings.

Regression analysis of calculated on measured displacements were used to assess the influence of fill and fold plunge on shaft pillar mining at the Homestake Mine. These effects were neglected in the original three-dimensional finite element analysis undertaken in 1991. An average fold plunge of 15? and a 24K fill (Young’ modulus of 24,000 psi or 165 Mpa) were used in the reanalysis. Measured displacements were obtained from an array of 36 m (120 ft) multiple-position borehole extensometers installed in June 1994 and read to March 2003. Results indicate the effects of both on calculated displacements and thus on regression parameters are noticeable. However, these neglected effects would not have changed the original inference of Ross Shaft stability during pillar mining.

Regenerative conveyors with complex conveyor profiles place unusually stringent demands on the starting drive control. Depending on the nature of the conveyor loading, the drive must either provide a positive driving force to overcome conveyor friction and gravitational forces if the belt is empty or the inclined sections are loaded, or it must provide a retarding force to resist the gravitational load of decline sections to control the acceleration rate. This paper discusses the requirements of regenerative conveyors, reviews the working principals of fluid couplings, and examines their interaction by means of a case study of a 1700 m long regenerative conveyor utilizing a fluid coupling with a proportional brake control to provide controlled starting and stopping under all load conditions.

By implementing various mining practices, mine operators can reduce the respirable dust exposure levels of the roof bolter and the continuous miner operators. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program, entitled AMP (Alternative Mining Practices), that gives a quantitative comparison of these reductions. The alternative mining practices and their corresponding reductions in dust exposure levels that are evaluated by the program include a remote control continuous miner, a half-curtain ventilation system, two auxiliary fan-tubing bypass ventilation systems, a modified cutting sequence, a comparison between single-split and double-split ventilation networks, and a comparison between exhausting brattice and exhausting tubing. Descriptions of each of these mining practices are included in the report. The report also includes a hypothetical case study to show how AMP enables mine operators to select the technique(s) that is best suited to their particular needs. AMP is a compiled basic program that has been designed to run on computers with a DOS version 2.0 or later operating system. It includes high resolution graphics (640 X 200 dot positions) designed to run with video boards that are functionally compatible with the IBM Monochrome/ Printer Adapter. Graphic screens are selected from menus, and can be bypassed if the computer is not equipped to handle high resolution mode. Their primary function is to show proper implementation of the mining practices evaluated by the program. This package requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM. The term "refractory gold ores" refers to a wide number of ore types which are not readily amenable to direct cyanidation. A number of processes have been used commercially, and a number of others have been proposed and in many cases pilot tested. The selection of the appropriate process for an ore should not be arbitrary. Ore grade may preclude some processes, but a good understanding of the ore mineralogy can guide the selection. Many present gold operations and many potential gold operations have faced or are facing problems with refractory gold mineralization. We at Hazen Research have had the opportunity to perform bench testwork and in some cases, pilot plant testing on a number of refractory ores. The data included in this paper are excerpted from the testing of fifteen ores which cover a wide range of mineralogical compositions. This paper is not intended to be a treatise on the processing of refractory gold ores. In many of these gold projects, not all of the standard process alternatives were evaluated, nor was adequate mineralogical work performed. Such is the dilemma of contract research. "If I believe that I don't need it, why should I pay to have it done." The intent of this presentation, therefore, is to show how different ores respond to the various processes, and to demonstrate that one must have an open mind when developing a process for a specific refractory gold ore.

Japan has produced 14-16 million tons of coal per year in the past several years. About half of the production comes from eight coal mines in the Ishikari coal field, Hokkaido. Most of the gassy coal mines are in this field and the average mining depth of these coal mines has already attained about 700 m from the surface. Therefore, most of the coal mines have suffered from occurrences of coal and gas outbursts. To prevent outbursts and to reduce ventilation air, gas drainage has been carried out at all of these coal mines and these have had successful results. However, the methods of gas drainage differ from mine to mine. In this report, an outline of the main methods of gas drainage are described.

"A slurry is any combination of liquids and solids where solids make up more than 10 percent of the mixture. Mining operations create various types of slurries from processes such as dewatering, bitumen extraction in oil sands, concentrator plants, milling operations, tailings, lime addition and so on. The mines then transport these slurries through pipelines (Fig. 1).Slurry valves are used when the mine needs to transport ore a long distance and there are no other viable transportation methods, such as roads or railroads.Severe service valves must be used in slurry applications and they must be tested to ensure reliability. This article describes how Emerson designs and tests its Fisher valves for use in mining slurry applications.Slurry pipeline valvesWithin a slurry pipeline system, valves are required as part of the pumping stations, choking stations and isolation stations. There may be multiple pumping stations depending on the length of the pipeline or the terrain it crosses. Choking stations are used to reduce the velocity and the pressure in the pipeline, either before a pumping station or at the end of the pipeline, and to ensure the pipeline does not slack (remains full and pressurized). Isolation stations exist so that a pig (a device sent through a pipeline to clean or inspect the pipe) can be inserted or removed from the pipeline.Typical valves used in a slurry pipeline are severe service ball valves. The valves use floating balls that are held between the seats and are not pinned or permanently attached to the shaft that rotates the ball. The inside diameter of the ball typically matches the pipeline inside diameter, enabling the pipeline to be cleaned or inspected with a pig.They can be built to accommodate the high pressures required for the typical slurry pipeline. These pressures can require up to ASME Class 2500 valves and flanges. The valves can get qlarge, up to NPS 36 inches.Specialized segmented ball valves and slurry knife gate valves are also used in some slurry applications when pressures are lower, in the ASME Class 150-300 range."
