Before undertaking to present to you a current analysis of copper, I would like to preface my remarks with a few observations that in themselves have a bearing upon commodity reviews in general. Having sat through a large number of such reviews since first joining the A. I. M. E. nearly forty years ago, I have no illusions about the hazards of the undertaking. If a speaker presents a statistical summary of commodity economics for the last year, most of his audience, having already read at least four commodity summaries on the identical subject, either get up and walk out or fall asleep. Should the latter happen, and were the listener to tumble from his chair and break his neck, obviously the speaker is liable. The subject matter seldom lends itself to histrionics on the part of the speaker so dangers of heart attack in the audience are not too great. Therefore the speaker, in order to retain listener interest, resorts to prophecy. Such venture was undertaken long ago by weather soothsayers, the "harouspex" of Ancient Rome, who generally cut up a sacrificial sheep and after staring at the entrails made their predictions which I understand had a batting average somewhat better than those undertaken on Wall Street based upon Dow Jones averages. Not being a licensed harouspex I cannot undertake predictions. I shall, however, fall back upon the experts.

An extensive series of linear and rotary cutting tests were run in soft and medium strength rocks at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines to investigate the possibility of very high speed mechanical excavation for tunnel, raise, and shaft boring. The results of these tests demonstrate that cutter penetrations of 38.1 mm (1.5 inch) and cut spacings up to 228.6 mm (9 inch) are possible in such rock without exceeding the bearing capabilities of the cutters. It was also demonstrated in vertical boring tests that continuous excavation rates up to 38.1 m/hr (125 ft/hr) can be achieved with state-of-the-art technology provided sufficient thrust and torque is available. A predictor model for soft rocks was also developed using the test data. Analysis of this model shows that the errors between the predicted and observed cutter normal loads appear to be independent of cutter diameter, tip width, cut spacing, and depth of penetration. This suggests that the structure of the model is correct with respect to these variables. An analysis of the coefficients in the model was also made and a correlation found between the principal coefficient and Unconfined Compressive Strength. The second coefficient in the model was found to be similar in magnitude to rock properties such as Brazilian Tensile Strength, Shear Strength and Point Load Index.

INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. "Hydrogen (H2) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system (AMS). In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, constant H2 concentrations in the airflow, from 100 to 500 ppm, pass through sensors. While in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct from charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to ensure the safeguard of underground miners. INTRODUCTION As many types of battery-powered mining equipment such as scoops and shield haulers are used in underground mining operations, charging stations are required to charge the equipment batteries. These batteries are of lead acid chemistry. A safety issue exists with the battery charging stations as all lead acid batteries produce flammable H2 gas during the normal charging process. Overcharging or excessive heat can quickly cause batteries to produce even more H2. If H2 is not appropriately diluted or dispersed, it builds up, and the risk of fire and explosion increases. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulation (30 CFR Part 75.340) requires that battery charging stations should be housed in noncombustible structures or be equipped with a fire suppression system. When a fire suppression system is used, the battery charging stations must be ventilated with intake air that is directed into a return air course or ventilated with intake air that is monitored for CO or smoke using an AMS. The monitoring of intake air ventilating battery charging stations should be done with sensors that are not affected by H2."

Deeply buried coal seams [greater than 3000 ft (914 m)] are difficult and sometimes hazardous to test and complete due to coal sloughing, formation pressure anomalies and coal fine generation. Data collected while stimulating two deep coalbed methane wells located at the Gas Research Institute/Resource Enter¬prises, Inc. "Deep Coal Sean Project" test site in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, is presented in this paper. A single thick coal seam was completed openhole in each well. Core data, reservoir data, in-situ stress measurements, and pre-stimulation calibration test data were collected at the site to use in the design of the fracture stimulation treatments for both wells. A nitrogen foam fracture fluid treatment was selected for the first well and a linear gelled water for the second well. Treatment pressures were monitored with a downhole quartz pressure transducer. Atypically high treating pressures were observed, possibly indicating coal fines plugging at the fracture tip or increase in fluid viscosity caused by interaction of the generated coal fines with the fracturefl uid. In addition, a comprehensive fracture diagnostic effort was employed during the fracturing of the second well; namely, triaxial borehole seismic, seismic televiewer, hydraulic impedance monitoring, gamma ray log (in conjunction with radioactive additives in the sand), and temperature log. The results indicate a vertical fracture was created parallel to the face cleat as expected.

TRANSMANCHE-LINK is responsible for designing, developing and implementing the project for a fixed link under the English Channel, comprising two running tunnels of diameter 7.6 metres and a service tunnel of diameter 4.8 metres. The three tunnels will all be 50 km long, with 37 km bored through chalk marl at a depth of 40 metres under the sea bed. The tunnels will be driven from both sides of the channel from intermediate addits above the coastline on either side with a 55 m access shaft at Sangatte in France and two "descenderies" or inclined tunnels addits and a shaft at Shakespeare Cliff on the English side. A total of eleven tunnel boring machines will drive the 150 km of tunnels. The major part of the tunnel linings will be built of precast reinforced concrete segments, and two plants have been specially built to produce the necessary 725,000 segments. Seven million cubic metres will be evacuated on wagons along the tunnels and then lifted by belt conveyor on the English side, and by hydraulic mucking from the bottom on the French side. Preliminary work started early in 1987 with manufacture of the first boring machines, construction of five precasting plants, boring of the Sangatte shaft in preparation of the Shakespeare Cliff entrances. "Sociotechnical systems are everywhere in the modern industrial world. Sociotechnical systems describe how humans interact with technology throughout a variety of processes. These systems are prevalent in modern industrial settings, such as operating mines. Safety and health management systems (SHMSs) are complex sociotechnical structures designed with the aim of managing and reducing occupational risk. U.S. mining companies are voluntarily adopting SHMSs to supplement regulatory safety compliance efforts. Like all complex sociotechnical systems there are a wide variety of approaches and adoption philosophies around a SHMS. Many SHMSs suffer from high levels of redundancies, which manifest themselves in diverse ways: duplicate processes, forms, permits, and tracking mechanisms. These redundancies have severe impacts on the overall system and absorb critical culture and leadership “energy”. A recent study initiated by the University of Utah and sponsored by the Alpha Foundation is investigating the effectiveness of SHMSs across 15 different U.S. mining sites. A large amount of data has been captured to help characterize elements of SHMSs and correlate their impacts on safety outcomes. Many variables were assessed in the study. Those of importance to this paper are the variables describing the robustness of the sociotechnical aspects of the SHMS. Two such variables are the overall integration of the SHMS within the whole system and how data is managed. Data management in this context deals with the approach to capturing, analyzing, and acting on data within the system. As well, systems are integrated around controlled, data-sharing mechanisms. It has been found that wide variety of approaches has been taken to integrate the SHMS within the governing management philosophy at a given site. A series of case studies is presented that develop some specific best practices for proper data management and integration of SHMSs.Introduction and Project Background Managing occupational health and safety can be done in many different ways, and with many different approaches, but is often based on the host country’s regulatory and industrial culture. However, many companies have extended their effort beyond the regulatory requirements of their host nation and have implemented Safety and Health Management Systems. The goal of these efforts is to reduce and eliminate occupational risk. Many health and safety practitioners have a hard time justifying various elements of health and safety management. There is a lack of institutional knowledge that measures and assesses the effectiveness of these Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) elements. To better understand the effectiveness of SHMSs the Alpha Foundation has funded a research project with the University of Utah. The title of the project is “Characterization and Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems in the U.S. Mining Industry.” The research team will assess the SHMSs of 15 United States mine sites. The outcome of the project will be a method to characterize the strength of the SHMS elements, assess a culture and leadership index, and finally establish correlations between elemental risk and safety outcomes. The study is currently in progress. However, many important outcomes have already been observed, particularly on the data management practices within an SHMS."

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. The separation, conducted at ambient temperature and a pressure of about 1000 psi a, was based on the difference in wettability of precious metals and minerals. Contact angle results indicated that in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold, platinum and silver had intermediate wettability. Minerals such as quartz and magnetite, however, were hydrophilic. Therefore fine gold particles. -325 mesh, that were mixed with water and liquid CO2 dispersed in the CO2 or agglomerated at the H2O-CO2 interface while the minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Best results were obtained when these fine gold particles were liberated, were not agglomerated in slimes, were not adhering to minerals, and were not coated with minerals.

Uranium precipitation from an eluate using hydrogen peroxide has been studied in a laboratory continuous unit. The important process parameters were the dosage of H2O2, reaction pH and chloride ion concentration. In the process, the alkaline eluate is acidified to a pH of 2, then H2O2 at 110%-130% of the stoichiometric requirement is added, and finally NaOH is added to maintain a pH of 4 for one hour to complete the precipitation and settling. The chloride content in the system is controlled to 50g/L or below by rejecting part of the decant solution. The process has been successfully employed in commercial operations. The uranium recovery is complete, while the precipitate settles rapidly and can be processed to high purity yellow cake without filtration.

Primary grinding in SAG mills is gaining more importance with respect to the conventional crushing, rod and ball milling operations. This is due to the reduced operating costs generated by lower steel consumption. However. SAG milling is inherently susceptible to more severe risks and problems since it attempts to combine several stages of the conventional crushing and grinding into a single stage. This paper analyzes the SAG milling operation by predicting the motion of rocks and steel balls. The well-known discrete element method (DEM) is used to calculate the trajectories of individual entities, and their collision with one another. A computer code previously used for studying the motion of grinding media in ball mills is enhanced to handle the interaction between heavy spherical steel balls and light chunks of rocks, usually ellipsoidal in shape. The DEM based software called MILLSOFT can animate the charge motion for different design of liners. A case study of a 9.75-m diameter SAG mill is presented and the effects of lifter bar height and configuration on the overall dynamics of the charge are discussed. Also the effect of spacing between liners on lifting the charge is presented. This new approach has a large potential because it shows in detail the effect of each design or operating parameter on the performance of SAG mills.

R. Michael Craig Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground-water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hunder pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. For example, water levels at elevations of 455 m (1500 ft) or more above the top of the Westwater Canyon member of Reply by H.C. Juvkam-Wold In general, Mr. Craig's comments are useful and accurate regarding the potential benefits of aquifer depressurization. However, two of his points require further explanation since they may lead to a misunderstanding of my paper and its predictions. These refer to his comments regarding failure to account for storativity and to non-artesian conditions. Equation 5 is indeed Darcy's steady state equation. However, as a careful review of the appendix in this paper will reveal, I have used this equation to represent semi-steady state conditions. The numbers tell the story of this one. More than 50,000 people and 1,890 exhibitors took over the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 24-26 for the largest mining trade show in the world ? MINExpo. Inside the convention center, some of the largest machines used in mining were on display. Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu and Hitachi displayed ultraclass offroad mining trucks and shovels. Atlas Copco and Schramm were among companies that rolled in mining drills and Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin were among the companies showing off the massive tires used by the trucks. Throughout the three halls and an outdoor display area, just about every kind of product, gadget or service used in the mining industry could be found on display somewhere.

The molybdenite flotation plant at the Magma Copper Co. San Manuel concentrator has been in operation since 1956. In January of 1980, the plant was converted from a hydrogen peroxide-ferrocyanide process to the current sodium cyanide-sodium hydro- sulfide process. This paper is an operational review of Magma Copper Co.'s molybdenite recovery circuit, column cell flotation experience, and use of on-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis.

INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. A linear programming model with integer sequencing variables is developed to schedule limestone production for a quarry in Central Japan. The model is used to optimize raw material production from the quarry supplying limestone to cement, quick lime and aggregate plants. Typically, the mining in the quarry takes place in four to six different areas each area having 3 or 4 mining increments. Each mining increment contains different quality of limestone. The limestone production from the quarry is transported to the plants byway of 3 ore passes. Each plant requires a given quantity of limestone per period meeting certain quality constraints. This paper will describe development of the scheduling optimization model and how it is used to schedule production by period within the quarry to meet the capacity and blending requirements of the plants.

This paper describes the scientific data acquisition, data interpretation, and sophisticated 3-dimensional modeling processes of an ongoing gas well stability research program by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs and the parallel 3-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that overburden depth, overburden geology, surface topographic relief, strata dip of the coal measure rocks, and casing cementing alternatives are the dominant factors affecting longwall-induced subsurface deformations and gas well casing stresses. Topographic relief could produce localized longwall-induced deformations if weak-to-strong rock interfaces are present near the bottom of stream valleys. Strata dip has significant impact on longwall-induced subsurface deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impacts on longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses.

LKAB's ores have specific mineralogical properties that make them especially suitable for the production of super-grade concentrates. Conditions are particularly good for this purpose at Malmberget, where a concentrate for high-purity sponge iron production has been produced for many years. Until 1978 the approximate assay was 71.2 % Fe and 0.45 % SiO2. Since then the assays have been improved by process modifications to approximately 71.5 % Fe and 0.20 % SiO2. Scope exists for still further improvement. In recent years the production of fractioned concentrates has been started. The material lies within the size range 74-125 µm and the approximate chemical analysis is 71.6 % Fe and 0.30 % SiO2. Other special products are under discussion. The Malmberget ores are also suitable for the production of high-purity direct reduction pellets with a SiO2 content below 1 %.

"Failures of coal ribs are major hazards in underground coal mines. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls were the leading cause of groundfall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to reduce rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines. Numerical models can be used as part of the design methodology provided the models are appropriately calibrated and verified. The paper presents a coal rib model to simulate the mechanism of the coal deformation and fracturing that can lead to stress-driven rib falls. The proposed coal rib model was calibrated against published data from an instrumented rib site at the West Cliff mine in Australia. Fracturing of the coal rib was defined by critical values of shear strain of the coal material and rib displacement. A critical plastic shear strain of 2.8% and a sudden increase of rib displacement of 30 to 45 mm were sufficient to develop a fracture plane in the rib model. Accordingly, a discontinuous rib deformation was achieved and it compared favorably against field monitoring data. Furthermore, failing ribs can contribute indirectly to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the last 18 years, there has been a continual occurrence of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines due to rib falls. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls (excluding longwall face and bursts) were the leading cause of ground fall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities [1]. Despite the threat of rib falls, the amount of rib falls and rib support research conducted in the U.S. is limited compared with what has been done in pillar and roof support design. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to minimize the number of rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines."

The question "what constituents should be determined?" is one that defies a simple answer, because earth scientist being what you are, the rock and mineral analyst will eventually be called upon to determine about three quarters of the elements in the periodic table. The concentrations of these analyses will range from as low as 1 ppb to 100% of the material being analyzed. The most important thing to remember about a quantitative analytical result is that it can only be an estimate of the concentration of the analyte present. A measure of the reliability of that estimate is given by statistically derived statements of the precision and accuracy of the measurement. When evaluating your data an understanding of precision and accuracy are of paramount importance. Precision is the measure of agreement between replicate values while the accuracy of a determination is the concordance between it and the true value. There is no quarantee, however, that a precise answer is an accurate one. The numerical difference between the two values is the error. When evaluating your data, the repeats analyzed with your samples will identify the precision and control standards of U.S.G.S. or Canadian Certified Materials quality will identify the accuracy. The main problem is this data is routinely withheld from the report, or was it ever included in the analysis of your samples?
