Leach pads of 272,000 tonnes (300,000 st) and 910,000 tonnes (1,000,000 st) with associated operating ponds have recently been constructed on sidehill locations with up to 20 percent slopes. The larger pad was designed in anticipation of ore heights up to 30 meters (100 feet). This paper describes site investigations and civil engineering design as well as construction experience associated with development of these pads. The leach pads were underlain by a double liner system consisting of 2 mm (80- mil) HDPE over compacted fine-grained tailings, with an intermediate leak detection layer. Both sand and geotextile drainage layers were used. Pad slopes were limited by the factor of safety against sliding on the HDPE liner. The sites for the facilities had been substantially disturbed by prior mining and construction activities. Natural conditions included peat layers and locally swampy ground. Site preparation included french drains to lower the water table and stripping of unsuitable subgrade materials.

The northern and central Appalachian coal basin in the eastern United States has been the source of about two-thirds of the nation's coal output during the 20th century. This region includes parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky. It covers about 130,000 km2 (50,000 sq miles) of the Appalachian coal basin and ranks as one of the world's most important coal production regions (Fig. 1). The coal industry's heyday in northern and central Appalachia has passed. This was due to competition from other fuels and low-sulfur coal produced in the West and because of the declining use of coking coal for steelmaking. Nevertheless, the region still plays a vital role in US coal production. It currently produces about 40% by weight of the nation's coal (its share is about one-half when measured by the energy content of the coal), contributes substantially to electricity generation and serves as the mainstay of US coal exports.

Coal mining is one of the major sources of methane release to the atmosphere by human industrial activities and is believed to contribute to -30% of the total methane emissions from industrial activities. In 1993, world saleable black coal production, attained almost 3.5 billion tonnes from which around 65% was produced underground. Coal in underground mines can contain high quantities of methane and some deep coal seams have methane content as high as 50 cubic meters per tonne of coal. Gas is re- leased during coal mining from the mined seam and in a higher degree from the neighboring unmined seams and gas bearing strata which are fractured as mining advances. This paper de- scribes a study which was undertaken to estimate the extent of methane emissions from coal mining in the world. Measured emission related data were collected from most underground coal producing countries in the world. The data included methane flows in the ventilation system, methane flows in gas drainage system, in-situ gas content, methane utilization and coal production. More comprehensive data were collected from a range of gassy and non-gassy Australian mines. Residual gas content of samples from run of mine were also measured. Using the Australian data, mathematical expressions were established to evaluate methane emissions as a function of coal production and in-situ gas content for other mines. These emission models were then used to evaluate the emissions for the countries or coal basins without measured emission data. Trends in methane emissions from underground mining for the year 2000 and beyond were also estimated.

"Iron ore in Minnesota probably carries a heavier tax burden than any mineral in any other place in the world. The State Tax Commission, created in 1907, originated the system, and with the assistance of the School of Mines is constantly making such adjustments, changes and increases as appear necessary, in order to place mineral reserves on the assessment rolls at their true and full present taxable value. The ore bodies on the Mesabi are so well defined by drilling and underground devel¬opment that it is possible to estimate very exactly the volume on every forty acres of land taken as a unit. This is done by the operating or holding company and reported annually to the Tax Commission, Who check the estimates, having all data, and- proceed to fix the valuation for taxation purposes.The first step is to ascertain a general average selling price in open market, over a period of years ; then the total cost per ton (exclusive of royalty) to produce and market the ore. The difference between the average selling price and producing cost per ton is taken as the future full value per ton. This is then discounted at a rate of interest that represents the present and possible future worth of money, over a period of years that will be required to exhaust the ore body, giving the present full value per ton., Iron ore is taxed at 50 per cent of its full value, while other property is taxed at 33 1/3 per cent and 25 per cent."

It is indeed an honor for White Pine, as a member of the copper mining industry, to participate in this Rapid Excavation Conference. Although our presentation, as the title indicates, is not a success story, we foresee, through our experience, future application of boring machines and rapid excavation equipment in the hard rock mining industry. One might ask what a copper mining company would be doing with boring machines and why the gamble on a high-cost, capital investment for a relatively untried application. Perhaps a little background on the White Pine mine and its geology will explain our daring and speculative motives. THE WHITE PINE MINE The White Pine Copper Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Copper Range Company, operates a mine, mill and smelter at White Pine, Michigan in the western Upper Peninsula approximately 6 miles due south of Lake Superior. We employ approximately 3,000 people from the surrounding area and mine approximately 25,500 tons of low grade (1%) copper ore per day. The orebody is contained within several distinct sedimentary horizons that comprise the lower 20 feet of a Precambrian formation known as the Nonesuch Shale. Numerous articles and reports have described many aspects of the White Pine operation and the geology. I will brief you only on that criteria which precipitated our interest in rapid excavation equipment and techniques, specifically, boring machines. Mineralogical and optical studies have demonstrated that the siltstones, sandstone and shale beds all contain relatively barren and discrete particles of quartz (25%), feldspar and mica, bonded with

IARC classified crystal-line silica as a Group 2A (probable) carcinogen in humans. Adverse classification by IARC, which is a non-regulatory agency, is very significant because many regulatory bodies follow or consider its findings. California included IARC findings in its listing of toxic materials under Proposition 65. OSHA considered IARC findings while promulgating its regulations on hazardous air contaminants. The impact of these scientific and regulatory trends in the mineral industry will be broad. Minerals and materials bearing silica at very low levels will be affected by the "IARC threshold of 0.1% crystalline silica. The regulatory track should follow that of talc and asbestos including the emotional aspects. Silica is much more common than talc or asbestos so, in the final analysis, it may have the farthest reaching impact on industry. Permissible levels set by California and OSHA have usually been lower than industry desires but higher than environmentalists desire. This pragmatic approach will blunt the impact somewhat.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) is the largest water wholesaler in southern California. Its service area spans the major urbanized portions of Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties. More than 15 million people are serviced by Metropolitan through its 27 member agencies. The primary sources of Metropolitan's water supply are the Colorado River Aqueduct (CRA) and California's State Water Project (SWP). Currently, planning and design level studies are underway by Metropolitan to expand the water storage and conveyance systems within the service area for the purposes of providing increased efficiency and flexibility to manage limited water supplies, improving water quality, and increasing system reliability. The system reliability issue is particularly significant because the conveyance facilities from both the CRA and the SWP must cross the active San Andreas fault. This fault is considered to be the source fault for the anticipated "Big Earthquake" in southern California. To meet these objectives, Metropolitan's expansion plans involve a major new storage reservoir, new large diameter pipeline and tunnel conveyance facilities, more efficient utilization of existing groundwater basins, and an aggressive public awareness and conservation program. This paper focuses on the planning studies that have been carried out for over 50 miles of tunnels being considered for several of Metropolitan's proposed conveyance systems. These tunnels have ranged in length from a few hundred feet to over 42,000 feet, with depths of cover ranging from a few tens of feet to over 3,000 feet, and finished diameters ranging from 10 to 20 feet.

The methods of burst control treated in the authors' very informative paper have been applied in the Ruhr Coalfield, Germany, for more than 20 years and have proved to be highly effective. It might be interesting here to mention a few experiences: The symptoms of critical stresses when drilling with small diameters ("test drilling") are essentially the same as described. However, we consider the situation safe if these symptoms occur beyond a certain distance ahead of the face. That safety distance equals three times the seam thickness plus the daily advance. It is the total seam thickness that counts, not merely the mined portion. Critical stresses within the safety distance are dissolved by so-called destressing measures: drilling with heavier equipment, blasting, or water infusion. To avoid bump initiation, the destressing operations should begin at the sides of the stressed zone rather than in the middle. As to water injection, there are two different principles. If the situation is critical already, high pressures are applied for hydraulic fracturing. If the stresses still allow to drill deep holes, the fluid pressure is kept low and acts for a longer time. This is to make the coal break successively instead of violently - a long-term precaution. When the stresses are very high, destressing is the most appropriate means. We mostly drill with 95 mm-diam (3.7 in.- diam). The techniques in detail are somewhat complex and subject to modifications. But the general idea is to accomplish burst prevention by controlling the potential burst situations.

ROCKS outcropping in Elandsrand's lease area consist of quartzite, shale and lava of the Pretoria group and are underlain first by 1 300 metres of dolomite and then by the Black Reef series. This in turn rests unconformably on Ventersdorp and Witwatersrand rocks and truncates the basal member of the Ventersdorp Super group, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), near the northern boundary of the lease. The Ventersdorp Super group is composed of lava and varies in thickness from nil in the north of the lease area to 1 000 metres in the south. The VCR, less than 100 cm thick, dips 210 to the south east and lies between 1 786 and 3 386 metres below datum. The Oberholzer dyke straddles the north-western corner of the property and separates the dewatered Oberholzer compartment, over which most of Elandsrand lies, from the as yet undewatered Turffontein compartment. As so much of the lease area is covered by thick impermeable rocks, the water-bearing capacity of the underlying dolomite was expected to be low. The man-material (MM) and rock hoisting ventilation (RU) shafts were sited well within and above a gravimetrically determined 200-metre 'safe-limit' contour of the northern slope of the Gatsrand. Two pre-cementstion holes were drilled and the cementation rigs were placed within a 15 metre annulus round each shaft to seal any likely water-bearing pockets in the proximity of the excavation during sinking through the first 300 metres of shales and the surface water-table.

To successfully bid a tunneling contract by machine, a contractor must have a reliable estimate of expected penetration rates and cutter costs. Preferably, these predictions should be independent of those supplied by machine and cutter manufacturers. Therefore, a series of rock index tests have been developed and incorporated in routine Rock Mechanics testing for the purpose of predicting rock boreability. Index properties were evaluated empirically by using rock samples and pertinent construction records from recently machined tunnels. Samples were taken from the completed tunnel walls, tested parallel to machine penetration, and results were compared to localized rates of penetration. Indices are based on two measures of rebound hardness and two measures of abrasive properties. The Shore (C-2 type) Scleroscope and Schmidt (L-type) Hammer were utilized to measure rebound hardness and a Taber Abraser was modified to measure rock abrasiveness and abradeability. Results indicate that rock hardness index properties investigated in this study can be used successfully to predict TBM penetration rates.

Miners have long known that rock noise, or the popping and cracking of the rock commonly heard during mining, can indicate instability of the mine structure. For many years, miners have "listened" to the rock talk and many times have interpreted changes in rock noise activity to be a warning of failure and have retreated from the potential failure area. Microseismics, or the study of rock noises, was begun in the early 1940s partly because of this historical fact. Microseismics is based on using geophysical equipment to detect and analyze rock noises on audible and subaudible levels. Thus, these systems are much more sensitive than the human ear and "hear" even more of the rock "talk" than do miners. Research has shown that micro-seismics can be used to precisely locate portions of a working area that are generating rock noise, and that rock noise release rate information from each area can be used to analyze its stability. On the basis of research results, microseismic systems are now commercially available and have been purchased and installed in many mines around the world. Introduction When a rock mass is subjected to changing stress conditions, such as those caused by mining, small-scale adjustments occur within the rock that release seismic energy. When this energy is in the audible range it is called rock noise. Those areas where stress changes occur are also the areas of the structure most likely to fail. Individual rock noises can be detected and analyzed to determine their precise location relative to the mine structure. Over a period of time plots of this data provide a pictorial representation of where stress changes are occurring. This is because rock noise activity tends to concentrate in those structure areas most actively adjusting to the changing stresses. Since these areas are the most likely to fail, they can be pinpointed and mapped relative to the structure. Rock noise rates, or the number of rock noises occurring per unit of time, also tend to vary dramatically before failure. Thus, the ability to locate the source of individual rock noises provides a means of determining where failure may occur, and rate counting within each area offers a means of assessing when failure may occur. This information, properly treated, can be used to avoid, control, or warn of impending failure. Successful applications of this technique have provided recent impetus to the effort of developing microseismics into a practical, reliable, and economically feasible tool. The phenomenon of naturally occurring rock noise was discovered in 1938 by Obert and Duvall (1939) who were measuring seismic velocities in mine pillars. Seismic energy other than what they were generating continually registered on their recording equipment. Further study by these researchers showed that the extraneous seismic energy being recorded was from rock noises that were being generated within the rock in highly stressed areas. Pursuing this interesting phenomena both in the laboratory and in the field, Obert and Duvall documented the dramatic change in rock noise rate before failure (Obert, 1941). They also established the fact that, in many instances, rock burst failures could be predicted by monitoring and listening to the rock noise activity in rock-burst-prone areas (Obert and Duvall, 1945). These early efforts clearly showed that microseismics had great potential as a tool for measuring or estimating mine structure stability. Extended testing, however, showed that sometimes rock bursts occurred with no apparent microseismic warning, and that at other times sharp increases in microseismic data were not accompanied by failure. Also, because precise location of individual rock noises was not possible at that time, one never knew where the failure was going to occur, only that failure near the observation point was likely. Thus, while the technique clearly offered promise, it was not considered practical then. In the mid-1960s, the Bureau of Mines undertook a new research effort to improve the microseismic technique. Major improvements were judged possible mainly because new and vastly improved electronic and system components had become available as an offshoot of space program instrument development. Thus, in 1967, development of a multichannel, broad band, microseismic system began (Blake and Leighton, 1970). Application of this system in rock-burst-prone mines showed it worked well and provided the incentive to develop methods whereby the source location of individual rock noises could be easily and directly calculated (Leighton and Blake, 1970; Leighton and Duvall, 1972; Redfern and Munson, 1982). Froth flotation has been used industrially for many years to separate valuable minerals from their associated gangue constituents. Notwithstanding the significance of this process to the mineral industry, many of the engineering tools needed for the evaluation of the flotation process are still in a developmental stage. Traditionally, the evaluation of a flotation test on both the laboratory and industrial scale has been based largely on a rougher recovery value achieved at a sufficiently long time to give a "final" or "equilibrium" recovery value. The assumption of a time equivalency for a given recovery value between various flotation tests or between laboratory tests and industrial operation underlies this method of evaluation. Such an assumption implies that flotation is an "equilibrium engineering process" and that the time-rate recovery of material from the flotation cell is not affected by changes in the flotation system. It has been shown by Bushell (1) and by Klimpel (2) that the assumption of time equivalency between various flotation tests is unjustified. Consequently, better tools are needed for evaluating flotation test results, Because mathematical flotation models which incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can completely describe flotation time-recovery profiles, they can provide an excellent tool to evaluate flotation tests.

There is an ongoing battle to gain general acceptance of fossil fuel byproducts as safe, economical and useful agro-industrial materials. Despite that, the US ash industry is witnessing a steady growth in the volume of coal burned, along with the production of greatly refined, higher-quality ash particulates. There are two principal reasons for this. Economics have caused an increasing number of US electric utilities to convert from oil-burning to coal-burning. And the Federal government has tightened specifications on fly/bottom ash production quality. Hence, it must be noted that new and more stringent Federal regulations were implemented in 1980. The resultant ash particulates are finer, more compact, and less heavy than in previous years. Additionally, the first shift from oil to coal in the US was initiated in December, 1979 by the New England Power Co. in Massachusetts. Coal is the most widely-distributed fuel in the US. And it is found in 38 states. The wide availability of this fossil fuel and its general cost-efficiency, coupled with the undaunted move of US electric utilities toward nuclear power, are major factors affecting the current statistics on ash generation (65.4 x 106 million tons). Interest in the use of coal in power plants is creating a unique ash disposal and use situation for ash producers as well as the Federal government. There are growing quantities of fly/bottom ash residue. Ash producers must decide how this byproduct can be dealt with effectively and profitably. At the same time, government agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are commissioned by Congress to assure that solid, liquid, or gaseous material released into the environment is not harmful or offensive to human health and the environment. Additionally, the Federal government is often responsible for establishing and enforcing guidelines and standards governing the use of recycled materials. Several standards and guidelines governing the properties and use of ash in the US have been established by governmental agencies as well as by the ash industry itself. Of these, some have been developed for ash use by a specific federal agency. Others apply to the entire industry. The following is a brief identification of the major specifications for fossil fuel ash: • US Corps of Engineers - These specifications were first established in 1957. They delineate the physical and chemical requirement for pozzolans used in mass concrete. These specifications applied only to Corps of Engineers' concrete construction projects for locks, dams, and other mass concrete projects until 1977. At that time, a joint effort between the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Federal government produced a modified specification that is now generally applied. The Corps of Engineers' ash, however, retained certain aspects of its specifications for its own use, particularly in the area of handling and shipping fly ash to its own projects. Prior to transporting the fly ash to the corps, all potential sources for the ash must be inspected and approved as a supply source. All silos must be filled, sealed, and tested before the ash is released for shipment. The normal test period for the ash is seven days, although several testings may require up to 28 days. Once the fly ash has been released, it can only be shipped to US Corps of Engineers' projects. All shipments are made with a government inspector present during loading. After a truck or railcar is loaded, the silo is resealed until the next shipment. This procedure requires three silos, and a minimum of 454 t (500 st) each should be considered for each storage unit. All silos are strictly committed to Corps of Engineers' use and are not available for other commercial shipments. • US Bureau of Standards - This Federal agency maintains a standard testing sample of nearly every product used in the US. The accuracy of the fly ash chemical analysis is measured by a regular cement and concrete reference laboratory (CCRL) inspection and based on test results from a standard sample of cement. • US Bureau of Reclamation - This agency pioneered several projects using fly ash and required Federal Standard Certification for pozzolans. • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) - This nongovernmental organization began preparing standards for fly ash sold and used in the cement and concrete industry in 1947, at the urging of ash marketing firms. Current standards define chemical and physical requirements and is entitled, "Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined Natural Pozzolan for Use as a Mineral Admixture in Portland Cement Concrete (C 618-80)." • State Highway Specifications - Led by Alabama, many states are moving toward permitting - and in some cases requiring-the use of fly ash in portland cement concrete and with lime for base stabilization projects for roads and highways. • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - The FAA acts in an advisory capacity. It has final approval on design specifications for airport construction projects. The agency has established a set of guidelines permitting the use of fly ash, and has approved several fly-ash-specific designs. The most current FAA fly ash projects

In the operation of today's large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and 'the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

The shift to lower grade iron ores, e.g., magnetic taconites, resulted in a shift towards agglomeration practices which could effectively deal with the fine particle sizes generated in the liberation and concentration processes. If the iron bearing particles are not extremely fine, e.g., -1/2 in + 100 mesh, sintering is an adequate means of agglomeration.(1) For the more dispersed ores which result in fine concentrates (more than 80%,-325 mesh), the fine particles must be agglomerated by mechanical means before final hardening, e.g., pelletizing.(1) In the pelletizing process, the essentially mechanical step of balling is extremely critical since the strength of the pre-fired pellet determines the firing conditions. The ability of the proper amount of moisture to hold together a ball of the very fine ore concentrate particles has long been recognized. It is a charac¬teristic of the reaction at the interface between the ionic solid of the ore concentrate and the polar water phase which overlays the solids. The strength in such moisture laden balls, the green strength, is a strong function of the water content (Figure 1) and thus deteriorates rapidly for either a small excess or a small deficiency of moisture. For purposes of commercial practice, the control of green ball handling properties by accurate control of ball moisture is too demanding. Moreover, as the ball is heated towards its hardening tempera¬ture, e.g., 1300'C, there is a substantial drying reaction which would lead to such a low dry strength of the ball that it would not support its own weight much less the weight of other balls in a firing furnace.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm's Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960's due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Fur36ther developments should be expected in the near future.

The milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited has been in operation for a period of 2 years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, have been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work has been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of inter-related variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feel that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic, non-segregated, syenite and granite pegmatites. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, uraninite, uranotharite, fluorite, titanite, cyrolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1,000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching and clarification capable of 1,500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on October 29, 1956 and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1,000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1,410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93,0 pet do several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for 8 months in 1958 has been 97.1 pet although all grinding mills were relined during this period.

The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains about 50 miles west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 3500 feet below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in crystalline rocks has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic records of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentary rocks and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past. Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreased with tire!. The rate of decrease in flow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change in flow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.
