The selection of leach reagent mainly according to the ratio of useful mineral to gangue in mineral raw material and the structure of mineral raw material. Besides that the price of reagent, the capability of reagent decomposing mineral and its causticity on equipment is also supposed to be in regard. On common conditions, the scandium content in mineral raw material is low, even Sc concentrate of specimen-Yunnan rare earth ore which contain Sc used in this experiment only is 148 g/t. Moreover, in enlarging scale experiments the content of scandium in leach liquid is only 3.6g/t, meanwhile various and complicated impurity existing in it. At present, both domestic and abroad has succeed in enriching scandium from vitriol solution, while enriching scandium from hydrochloric acid only has been studied in some minority units, which is not reported to be practical in industry. Therefore, this item offer a new research issue on Sc?s extract, which is as well as the task of this research. Spectrum analysis, chemic component analysis and scandium content have been made in main mineral measurement on rare earth with Sc in the paper. Based on characters of sample, select hydrochloric acid, vitriol and nitric acid as leach reagent and make different blueprints to accomplish the experimental research about selecting leach reagent. In the aspect of rare earth leach scandium leach density is researched, leach liquid to solid rate, leach temperature, leach time, leach granule rate and leach solution. This experiment claims that in the optimal experimental ambience, leach rate of vitriol is 58.18%, the leach rate of nitric acid is 50.73% and the leach rate of hydrochloric acid is 59.34%. Among them, hydrochloric acid has the best effect, therefore this experiment choose it as the leach reagent.

THE ARGONAUT' mill stands at the crest and spreads down the western slope' of a hill, which incidentally covers the' outcrop of the Argonaut vein' at this point. The collar of the main shaft of the mine is situated on the eastern slope of the same hill 120 ft. below the highest ?point. The present mill, built in 1916, was designed to treat 250 tons per 24-hr. day. This capacity has not been attained recently owing to the inability of the mine to produce enough ore while extensive development and underground construction were under way. At present, however, the mine is more than able to take care of the mill requirements.

The investigation described in this publication was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of the anionic silica flotation method on goethitic iron-bearing materials from the Cuyuna Range, Minn. Samples used in this investigation were a composite of drill core from 13 holes, and 3 samples from lean ore stockpiles. These samples are believed to be typical of the mineralization occurring in an area with a potential reserve of several million tans of submarginal iron ore. Results from batch tests showed that the iron-bearing minerals could be effectively concentrated by flotation removal of the siliceous gangue. The drill hole composite yielded laboratory flotation concentrates from locked tests containing 56.8 percent Fe and 6.1 percent silica, with an accompanying iron unit recovery of 94.2 percent. Concentrates containing 52.4 to 53.7 percent Fe also were produced from the lean ore stockpile materials; corresponging iron recoveries ranged from 71 to 79 percent in the batch tests, with the possibility remaining for additional recovery of iron from the middlings.

Increasing demand for fine grinding to improve mineral liberation and metal recovery and the need for stricter control of the environmental impact of tailings deposition poses problems for tailings disposal. This has led to an increasing number of investigations of properties of tailings and their disposal. This paper describes laboratory model testing undertaken on Macraes mine flotation tailings to provide information on tailings behaviour under conditions of subaerial deposition. The in-place density or 'dry density' of the impounded tailings and the impoundment depth relationship are important for utilisation of the available impoundment storage facility and results of dry density to depth relationships are given for the Macraes mine tailings impoundment.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. "TREVIICOS CorporationINTRODUCTIONThe Walter F. George lock and dam was constructed on the Chattahoochee River between 1955 and 1963 with the double function of improving navigation and generating power. Its 82 ft. by 450 ft. (25m x 137m) lock can accommodate large barge traffic and its four generating units with a plant capacity of 150 MW have an average energy output of 453,000 MWH. The dam consists of a 1,496 ft. (456m) long concrete structure housing the spillway, a non overflow portion, the power units and two earthen wing dams extending to the Georgia and Alabama sides, respectively 5,810 feet and 6,130 feet long (1770m and 1868m). As soon as the reservoir was impounded it became apparent that excessive seepage was occurring. From 1962 to 1985 a series of remedial works was performed using several techniques, but the problems continued under the dam, jeopardizing its generating potential and possibly undermining its stability.Finally, the decision was made to construct a deep cutoff primarily under the concrete portion of the dam to remedy the problem. PROCUREMENTOn July 5th, 2001 best and final offers were solicited by the Corps of Engineers (COE) for the construction of a deep cut-off to be built in front of the concrete portion of the dam from the bottom of the lake and tied into it. The cut-off had to cross an existing lock structure and an underwater retaining wall, as well as the remnants of a steel coffer cell left in place from the initial construction.The specifications required that the wall be built with a minimum thickness of 24” (600mm) and that it extended from the bottom of the lake to elevation -5 (1.52m) into the Providence formation, an impervious layer.While the land portions of the wall were on average 208 feet (63.4m) deep, the marine portion started from up to 90 feet (27m) of water and continued through different rock formations for another 100 feet (30m).Contractors were invited to propose their own method of constructing the cut-off and offers would be evaluated using several criteria, including technical, economical, organizational and experience.Three proposals were received and on August 14, 2001 an award was made to the Joint Venture (JV) of Treviicos and Rodio."

A gold sampling optimization study was carried out in support of open pit gold mining operations for the Newmont Gold Company Bootstrap-Capstone deposits in Northeastern Nevada. Six bulk samples were tested using fire refining techniques at field particle size, to determine coarse particle heterogeneity of the ores, and by gravity .concentration methods at 10 mesh particle size, to observe any particulate gold liberation. An overall sampling model is presented for the deposit based on the pooled test information, to reconcile the results of coarse particle heterogeneity testing and the fine particle 'liberation testing. The sampling model is used to recommend procedures to control the variability of gold grade estimation due to the fundamental error (nugget effect) during sampling, sample preparation and assaying of the ores and other fundamental variances. The technique of simplified quantitative risk analysis (SQRA) is used to provide an economic justification for implementation of. recommended improvements to field sampling practices.

There is a rapid expansion of world’s infrastructure and simultaneously existing infrastructure is aging. The maintenance of infrastructures has been of particular concern to the engineering community. Monitoring and evaluating the structures have become more significant than ever. Ground anchor is an important part of the structure where it is installed. Unfortunately there are limited testing methods available to assess the force in the pre-stressing steel. High cost, complicated equipment and limitation of space often prevent these methods from being implemented. DYNA Force sensors have been developed to measure the force in the pre-stressing steel during construction and at any time during the lifetime of the structure. These sensors make use of the magneto-elastic properties of ferrous materials. A readout unit is designed to magnetically energize the steel through the sensor and measure the response of the steel to the process. The readout unit then converts the response into a direct force reading. They can be used for bare, epoxy- coated, galvanized and greased-sheathed steel in the bonded, un-bonded, grouted or un-grouted length of the tendon. It measures the force of the steel element at the location where it is installed and can be recorded manually, automatically, or remotely. The sensor is robust, requires no maintenance and it is expected to have a similar service life to that of the surrounding structure. Sensors have received attention in terms of accuracy, performance, ease in installation, durability, and cost effectiveness. Sensor readings provide a second measurement, in conjunction with the jack pressure gauge, of the post tensioning force during initial testing procedure for ground anchors. This paper describes its application in tie-back and tie-down anchors and force monitoring of retaining walls, bridge abutment and dams where the data were collected manually, automated and remotely. INTRODUCTION Our infrastructure is expanding and the existing infrastructure is aging. Some structures are expensive to maintain and some occasionally fail. There is a large demand for implementing health monitoring of structures. Many tie-backs, retaining walls, dams and other geotechnical structures are post-tensioned and many of them need repair using a post-tensioned system. On many occasions during construction and service life of the structure, it is useful to know the force in the post-tensioning and anchor system. Many piles and drilled shafts are designed using reinforcing steel and the compressive forces in reinforcement are unknown. Although there are many methods to measure the tendon force, most of them are cumbersome, expensive, and the accuracy varies depending on the method used.

The maintenance cost, or renewal cost, in any preparation plant is a large item of expense and reflects in the total cost of producing and preparing the ton of coal. It is given constant study to the end that ways and means of controlling and reducing this proportion of the total cost may be developed. Study of this item of cost has proceeded along usual lines, which are: proper functioning of the maintenance organization; systematic and thorough inspection to prevent breakdonns; the making of repairs before renewals are needed; maintenance work done thoroughly the first time, instead of patching, study of parts needing frequent renewal or repairs or conditions resulting in delays, thorough knowledge of cost by the mall responsible for maintenance; and the use of special equipment and materials. This paper is to deal with special equipment and materials to reduce the maintenance cost hut before going into that I want to express an opinion on the general subject. Maintenance Organization Usually maintenance is taken care of by a group of men who perform their work on the off shift. The work is arranged by the operating official who should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance, so that materials needed may be made up for the particular job and waste of time in looking up materials be prevented. To perfect the maintenance organization, all operating attendants should be thoroughly trained to be familiar with all working parts of their equipment, to make a thorough inspection and to write out the slip for the work required. This requires job analysis, but it is worth the effort, because the attendant usually is better informed than anyone else about his particular equipment. The operating official can judge the scope of the work to direct the repair and to have material ready. Lubrication is an important item in maintenance, and a subject by itself. Usually the breaker oiler is designated to perform this task. This man should be picked for his ability and put in line for promotion to machinist. He should be trained as an inspector, as he is constantly visiting most parts of the breaker and has an opportunity to observe needed maintenance. The first thing is to lay out maintenance work and arrange to have it done; the next is to check the work and see that it has been properly done. This check should be made by the operating official, and through the attendant. The cost statement showing the various items of maintenance cost is not often understood by the man in direct charge. Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

UINQUESTIONABLY the petroleum industry not only can supply the world's present oil requirements but even can meet a considerable increase in demand if it should come. The United States produced last year 1 1/3 billion barrels of crude oil, or more than 60 per cent of the world's total. It could have provided more, if needed, because we has a large shut-in crude producing capacity. Our refining capacity of 4,500,000 0 barrels per day is more than 2 per cent above our average refinery run for 1940. Adequate crude supplies and manufacturing facilities also exist outside of the United States. Large crude reserves exist in South America, in Iran and Iraq, in Russia and Romania, in Sumatra and adjacent islands. The refineries of the Dutch West Indies, of Iran, and of the Netherland East Indies are well located in relation to crude reserves and world trade lanes. Furthermore, flexibility in the manufacturing facilities permits adjustment of yields to meet a considerable range in variations between demands for products. Only with regard to 100-octane aviation gasoline is there any apparent refinery problem. Even here so far as this country is concerned, additional refining facilities can be installed well within the time that would be required to turn out the airplane engines which will use this super fuel.

Air blast associated with detonation of explosives in mining, construction or military applications is often responsible for complaints by people who live or work in the vicinity of the activity. Most often, the complaints are based on the perception that vibration caused by the airblast damaged one or more residential buildings that may be located within several hundred feet or several miles from the blast site. The potential for airblast to cause damage is related to the amplitude and frequency of the airblast overpressure wave at the receptor. Amplitude and frequency of the overpressure wave are, in turn, dependent upon the type and amount of explosive detonated; the degree of confinement; the distance the wave travels; the topography between the blast site and the receptor; and, atmospheric conditions. It is well known that, as the result of atmospheric focusing, the amplitude of airblast overpressure that exists relatively far from the blast site may be substantially higher than the amplitude associated with the attenuated wave in an isotropic atmosphere. Two methods are available to predict baseline overpressures 1) the Sandia Laboratories, Atomic Energy Commission method as extended by the Naval Ordinance Laboratory (NOL method) and the Ballistic Research Laboratory method (BRL method). These methods are developed by different techniques, are based on different idealized atmospheres and predict widely different results. The amplification factor applied to account for the effect of focusing must be consistent with the method used to predict the baseline overpressure. Theoretically, the amplitude of the overpressure at distances several miles from the blast site could be more than 25 to 100 times the amplitude of the attenuated wave predicted by the BRL method. However, based on comparisons with measured overpressure data is probably less than approximately 3 times the amplitude of the attenuated wave as predicted by the NOL method. This paper is based on research conducted as part of investigations of airblast damage complaints associated with an accidental explosion near Eveleth, Minnesota and with the disposal of military explosives by detonation at the Sierra Army Depot near Herlong, California. The techniques available for estimating the airblast overpressure that might be generated at various distances from the blast site and criteria for evaluating the potential for damage are examined.

Smoke abatement is a subject of which fuel technology, although absolutely essential, is only a part. Its successful accomplishment starts and ends with human factors that must be given thorough consideration; between this "start" and "end" fuel technology is applied. Smoke abatement usually starts from the desire of some person or persons to be free from uncleanness caused by the stack of someone else and ends with the sincere desire of the operator of the fuel-burning equipment to maintain a clear stack. Although "smoke abatement been discussed for many years, it is only recently that the public has been mindful of such expressions as "air pollution" and "air hygiene." The subject has duel in common with that of supplying pure water but is more complicated. The public desires pure water, expects pure water, is willing to pay for pure water, and expects to continue to pay for it indefinitely; it is a development of civilization. It is doubtless correct to say, however, that people in general do not et realize the detriment of air pollution to their well-being or give the question enough serious consideration. This is illustrated by the fact that in city smoke abatement it is the mass of small householders that sins the most and is the hardest to handle. It is rather difficult to assemble a group of people in a room without the air becoming contaminated with smoke. Smoke abatement will lag with the lack of desire for pure air - probably the biggest human factor involved in its accomplishment.

In Bureau of Mines research on recycling chrome refractory wastes, used refractories from argon-oxygen decarburization and electric steelmaking furnaces were beneficiated, concentrates were reformed into briquets, and modulus of rupture tests were conducted at 1,350° C. The test results indicated that the beneficiated minus 6-mesh material could be used for producing magnesia-chrome refractories.

The geologic modeling of multiple domains is required for the prediction of mineral resources and reserves. In general, explicit methods have wide acceptance among modelers due to the ability to manually add deemed important trends and geological features into the models. As an alternative, implicit geologic modeling techniques are increasingly adopted to reduce professional time requirements. These methods aim for objective, repeatable and flexible models by replacing the manual time-consuming interpretation of sections with the interpolation of signed distance values. These techniques, however, have been developed for the binary case of two domains at a time. The current paper presents an algorithm that extends the binary case to multiple domains. The method is able to transfer large-scale geological features from data to geologic models. A case study illustrates the benefits of the algorithm and practical implementation considerations.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

This paper presents a case study where economics dictated an aggressive slope angle and where an appropriate slope management programme allowed successful completion of mining to 190m below surface. The Navachab Gold Mine is located in Namibia and is one of the few gold mines in that country. Mining by open pit methods commenced in 1990 with economics dictating an aggressive slope design to minimise waste stripping and make the mine viable. With steep slope angles in the design, and a steeply dipping footwall geology, it was necessary to introduce a comprehensive slope management programme. This required good mining practice in limit blast techniques with pre-splits and trims, and good housekeeping to effect a safe and economical operation. The slope management programme in addition required in pit mapping and logging procedures, regular survey monitoring evolving to a robotic Geomos system, as well as slope instrumentation to monitor stability. Two relatively large scale failures occurred at the mine, the second of which impacted on the east wall access ramp, while the first was confined to an operating stack. The paper describes the design and slope management techniques developed for the east wall.
