Efficient transportation is necessary to complement modern mechanized mining methods. The increasing trend toward high-capacity face loading equipment has demanded equally efficient haulage methods; this has been met by increasing mine-car sizes, using larger locomotives, and increasing haulage speeds, all requiring properly installed and maintained haulage roads specifically designed for this type of traffic. The recommendations and specifications included in this circular were made to point out salient factors important to the proper construction and maintenance of track haulage roads and to serve as recommended standards for track installation and maintenance. GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED Haulageway. - The track, walkway, trolley wire, feeder lines signal end telephone lines, signals, telephones, support, and drainage of the entry referred to. The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone deposits, near Beatty, NV, have a combined drill-indicated reserve of 15.8 Mt (17.4 million st) of ore. Average grade is 3.5 g/t (0.103 oz per st) gold and 8.2 g/t (0.24 oz per st) silver. The deposits occur in Miocene volcanic rocks that underwent large-scale movement within a detachment-faulted terrane. The principal host to gold mineralization is a strongly welded rhyolitic tuff that experienced brittle deformation during plate movement. Open space fractures and breccia were filled with quartz, calcite, and adularia accompanied by lesser pyrite, gold, and acanthite. Gold occurs as micrometer-sized particles within and adjacent to the low-angle fault and along associated listric-normal and tear faults. The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone are volcanic-hosted, detachment fault-related, epithermal quartz calcite stockwork gold deposits. Bullfrog's minable reserve is 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of ore grading 3.8 g/t (0.11 oz per st) of gold. At Montgomery-Shoshone, 2.7 Mt (3 million st) minable tons at 2.5 g/t (0.072 oz per st) are present. Preproduction stripping has begun at the Bullfrog ore body. A 7.7-kt/d (8500-stpd) carbon-in-pulp (CIP) mill is under construction. In 1990, Bond Gold expects to be producing about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz per year) of gold.

Um dos maiores benefícios obtidos com a espumação da escória no forno elétrico a arco é a diminuição dos custos com eletricidade. O presente trabalho tem por objetivos estudar por meio da termodinâmica computacional alguns tópicos do sistema quaternário CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO (CSFM) importante na siderurgia pela conexão com o tema espumação de escória, que são: (i) composições de saturação das fases sólidas ‘MgO’ e ‘CaO’ e (ii) a viscosidade efetiva de um ponto particular deste sistema.

Vehicles traveling on untreated dirt and gravel roads at open-pit mines disseminate high concentrations of dust (fig. 1). Excessive dust creates safety hazards by reducing visibility and may endanger the health of the men who breathe it. If the dust contains free silica, it can cause silicosis. In addition, maintenance costs of mechanical equipment are increased if equipment is operated in extremely dusty places. Dust on haulage roads in hot, arid country can be controlled if the surface of the road is sprinkled frequently and adequately with water. Often, when roads are sprinkled with water to control the dust, hazards are caused through reduced traction and skidding because of the mud that is formed on the surface of the road. Reducing the amount of water used will help to reduce the hazard of skidding.

An evaluation is presented for an ammonium sulfate leaching process designed to extract manganese from Cuyuna, Minn., and Aroostook, Maine, deposits. In this process the manganese and iron in the ore are reduced to MnO and Fe 3 0 4 in a shaft furnace; the reduced ore is then leached with ammonium sulfate solution forming soluble manganous sulfate while leaving most of the iron undissolved. After filtration, the manganese and some impurities are precipitated from solution as carbonates which are then pelletized and calcined to form a product composed mainly of Mn3O4. The plants are designed to produce 100 tons per day of manganese contained in a product that is suitable for the production of ferromanganese. A byproduct credit, together with the extra processing cost, is included for the Cuyuna ore processing plants because Fe2O3 may be recovered for use in blast furnaces. The estimated operating costs per ton of manganese, excluding income taxes and return on investment, are: [ ] The process with or without byproduct recovery, when treating Cuyuna or Aroostook ores, is not economically competitive with ores available at $71.43 per ton of contained manganese.

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of various rare-earth metal addition practices upon the macrostructure and the pattern of sulfur distribution in steel ingots. Heats of plain carbon steel were melted in a 1-ton, basic electric-arc furnace. Melts were treated with mixtures of rare-earth silicides, aluminum, and cryolite either in the furnace before tap or in the ladle after tap to determine the effects of this form of rare-earth treatment upon ingot macrostructure. Steels thus treated with rare earths in the furnace were characteristically free of the gross subsurface nonmetallics which typically result from conventional rare-earth treatments. Steel treated in the ladle showed only a few such nonmetallics, and practical techniques were developed for eliminating most of these. Results showed that furnace deoxidation was controlled by the concentration ratio of rare earths: aluminum. During casting, deoxidation was controlled by the concentration of rare earths. Oxygen contents equivalent to vacuum ladle degassing resulted from air-melt furnace treatments with the rare-earth mixtures described. Rare earths in steel inhibited the onset of equiaxed grain formation during ingot freezing, and also virtually prevented interdendritic segregation of sulfides.

IN furtherance of the policy of acquainting those members of the Institute who live at a distance from New York with all the details of administration, the thirty delegates sent by the local sections and the technical divisions were invited to attend the meeting of the Directors on Tuesday evening as well as the Directors' dinner immediately preceding. Including the Directors and officers, new and old, the members of the Papers and Publications Committee and the section delegates, more than 70 sat down at the dinner table in the Engineers Club. The attendance at the business meeting that followed was not quite so large, doubtless for the reason that the ladies' fashion show, held in connection with the informal dance, offered attraction that eclipsed that of watching the wheels of Institute business go around.

CONSIPERABLE information on the industrial or non-metallic mineral resources of British Columbia has been published. For a general resume of the subject, reference may be made to a paper presented by A. M. Richmond before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1935 (1). To avoid duplication, the present paper is confined to a discussion of the existing industrial mineral industry of the Province and of the factors governing its present and future development. British Columbia's mineral production in 1936 had a value approximately 15 per cent of that for the whole of Canada. Preliminary estimates for 1937 indicate that this proportion has been maintained, although the totals have increased about 25 per cent. The following table presents comparative figures, for the year 1936, illustrating the relative importance of the major divisions of the mineral industry in British Columbia and in Canada as a whole.

In order to derive the population distribution of gold nanoparticle morphologies as a function of size, highresolution electron microscopic (HREM) observations and structural analyses were done for over 4000 particles (3-18 nm) grown by an inert gas aggregation (IGA) source using helium. To obtain structural features threedimensionally and not to skip high-contrast images, twenty photos were taken for each particle by changing tilting angle of a specimen holder in combination with the through-focus procedure. For the reliable structural determinations, HREM images and their tilting sequences were directly compared with multislice-simulation results for icosahedral, decahedral and face-centered cubic morphologies, and finally the population distribution of each morphology was obtained as a function of size. In the present sample, icosahedral particles were dominantly populated over the whole observed size range and decahedral particles with non-spherical truncated bi-pyramid shape were secondly dominant. Even though a large number of sampling has been done, few crystalline particles were observed.

A critical review of the numerous test methods that have been devised for measuring the "plastic" and "swelling" properties of bituminous coking coals and the practical evaluation of the data obtained has long been needed. The author appreciates fully, first, the arduous problem of doing justice to the merits and limitations of the many original test methods and their manifold modifications and, second, the more difficult task of interpreting the test data obtained in their practical applications to the important problems involved in the coking process. It has been the constant aim of the author to point out the broader significance of the test principles employed in the different classes of test methods and the usefulness of the test data obtained in relation to the problem of coking bituminous coals, rather than to stimulate unduly a controversial criticism of the merits and limitations of any particular class of test methods or of individual test methods devised by different workers. The task has been quite difficult because of the almost total lack of accepted test standards and specifications.

Over the years, concentrator plant design has evolved from a large number of small grinding mills to a small number of large mills. In many cases, all of the tonnage runs through a single mill (typically a large SAG mill), so that the plant?s performance hinges on the productivity of this one machine. Industry specifications attempt to address the critical nature of today?s grinding mills in a manner that is often overly complex, neglects economics, and is not clearly focused on the end user?s goals. This paper surveys current industry practices, and proposes an improved approach to standards writing recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are all inter-related in contributing to a project?s success. The lessons learned here can be extended to specifications for all types of machinery.

The underground car park "Admonterhof in the historical centre of Graz is an example for the technical and economical success of a complicated structural design using a concept on the basis of the observational method. The intention to built a 20 m deep excavation beneath a protected monument was accompanied by some essential issues: the preservation of the existing state avoiding extensive displacements by means of a girder grid of reinforced concrete, its support on large bored piles and small steel-tube piles with possible active compensation of differential settlements, the excavation support in none built-up areas with secant bored piles, the underpinning of existing buildings with different structures by means of jet grouting. Furthermore the hydraulic gradient and the permeability of a rock formation in a part of the excavation had to be explored with the purpose to control the inflow of groundwater with a level difference of more than 10 m.

Pontos estratégicos de solos foram analisados com o objetivo de estudar a possível contaminação de água pluvial, por difusividade, mantidas em reservatórios existentes na Ilha dos Arvoredos, localizada no Guarujá, litoral de São Paulo, Brasil. Iniciou-se o procedimento com a preparação das amostras (homogeneização e quarteamento), seguida das análises físicas (granulometria e umidade). A caracterização foi realizada por espectrometria de fluorescência de Raio-X e por espectrometria de absorção atômica. As concentrações de enxofre foram quantificadas por forno de combustão e as cinzas e matéria volátil por TGA (Analisador Termogravimétrico). As análises realizadas em Raio –X mostraram composição química de solo argiloso com altas concentrações de SiO2 e Al2O3 e as realizadas no equipamento de combustão mostraram concentrações de enxofre menores que 0,03%. Os resultados se apresentaram negativos para metais pesados ou outro tipo de elemento que poderia comprometer a potabilidade das águas contidas nos reservatórios.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. The thermodynamic properties of aegirine, of composition [(Na0.869Fe30+7362 Fe20+16Mn0.03Ca0.1121)(A10.141Sil 9738)(06)], were experimentally determined at the Bureau of Mines as part of its efforts to advance minerals technology. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry is AHf298 = -641.12±0.73 kcal/mol. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is AH298 = -37.136±0.509 kcal/mol. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 19.1 to 304.6 K. The derived standard entropy is S298 = 38.03±0.14 cal/mol?K. The heat capacity was measured over the range 348 to 1,198 K by differential scanning calorimetry. These experimentally determined data were combined with data from the litera¬ture to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of form¬ation over the temperature range of the measurements. Standard enthalpies of forma¬tion are given as functions of temperature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation at 298.15 K is AGf298 = -600.36 kcal/mol.

The Red Lake Mine is located approximately 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay. This 545 tpd (600 tons/day) underground narrow vein gold operation is set to produce in excess of 14.8 tonnes (475,000 ounces) in 2001 at a cash operating cost below 75 U$/oz. The high-grade nature of this deposit (>55 g/t or >1.6 opt) coupled with its complex geological environment and relatively deep location dictated the choice of a very selective primary mining method, Mechanized Overhand Cut and Fill. In addition to geological challenges, mine design issues such as material handling, ground stability and requirements for yieldable ground support are also discussed in this paper.
