MINE surveying and engineering at the various properties of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has developed and increased in importance steadily as mining methods have changed and expanded, both in the development of ore bodies and in the methods and styles of stoping. Most important to satisfactory engineering practice, and secondary -only to accuracy and precision, is the preservation of all data relative to surveys and calculations so that it is readily available for use at all times and in -such form that it is permanent, easily found, and usable. The first consideration for a proper, accurate, and practical start for surveys and efficient engineering at any property is an accurate triangulation net and system of co-ordinates. This has been our practice and the first step seas to select a base line, readily accessible and easily measured, situated preferably on an even grade where the difference of elevation between the two -end monuments was not too great and -the distance was long enough for practical use. Permanent concrete monuments were built for these base-line points so constructed that they could be easily recognized and were visible. Precise levels were run on this base 'line and the elevation (sea level datum) if possible was established at each end monument. The distance was carefully measured many times, back and forward, by using a tape that had been standardized by the National Bureau of Standards. Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, ferrochromium, alloys, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Alloys was founded in 1949 by a consortium led by the John Brown Group. It was the first ferrochrome plant in Africa. The establishment of the refinery was necessitated by an increase in world stainless steel demand and the need to reduce cost by shipping alloy rather than chrome ore. The location of the refinery in Gweru was influenced by a number of factors, not least of which were the abundance of chrome ore deposits, access to inexpensive power from Kariba, the availability of reductant coke from Hwange, accessibility to ports (as the town was well served with rail and road networks second to none in the country), and of course cheaper labour costs. The production of Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LCFeCr) was commissioned in 1953 and produced from an Open Arc Furnace with a Submerged Arc Furnace producing Ferrosilicon Chrome (FeSiCr) that is used as a reductant in the production of LCFeCr. An experimental furnace was commissioned in 1958 to help with efficiency and control on larger furnaces. A second Submerged Furnace was commissioned in 1963. Three other Submerged Arc Furnaces were built between 1967 and 1974. Several mines were acquired between 1974 and 1984, as a strategic move to ensure the growth of the refinery. A briquetting plant was commissioned in 1977, enabling the use of friable ores to enhance the capacity of ore supplies and ore cost management. A plant to recover alloy from slag was established in 1994 to capitalize on market demand without large capital outlay that would be required to build other furnaces to increase capacity. Zimbabwe Alloys has created employment opportunities throughout the years. There have been direct employment opportunities at both the refinery and the mining divisions. With time, indirect employment was realised both upstream and downstream of the refining process, enhancing the livelihood of numerous people. Zimbabwe Alloys' involvement with various labour skills has, of necessity, enabled it to develop a culture of safety at work, home, and play. Zimbabwe Alloys has contributed to society by participating and funding various local initiatives primarily to impact positively on societal needs. The latest development was in 1996, when Zimbabwe Alloys entered into a Technical Transfer Agreement with Japan Metals and Chemicals to improve the efficiencies and hence the profitability of the LCFeCr production process. A significant quantity of various alloys has been produced since inception, and significant foreign currency has been earned for the country. This was in spite of challenges that included the cyclic nature of market prices, the upheavals of sanctions affecting the macro-economic environment, and the challenges related to the deteriorating grade of chrome ore and reductant coke.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, blast furnace, slag viscosity, slag liquidus temperature, phase equilibria The viscosity of molten slag in blast furnace operations is an important process variable, influencing the rate and location of reactions inside the furnace, as well as the ease with which the final slag could be removed from the furnace. To optimize these processes, it is necessary to estimate the slag viscosity and liquidus temperatures as accurately as possible, and know the target values. Models to predict viscosities and liquidus temperatures, incorporating phase equilibrium calculations, have been developed and validated with measured data. Various diagrams have been developed to illustrate how the properties vary with composition and temperature, including pseudo-ternary diagrams of SiO2-MgO-CaO-Al2O3 for viscosity and liquidus temperature. Models were also applied and methodologies developed to analyse historical blast furnace operations and determine target values.

"Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems (VTS). To investigate flow effects under realistic conditions, especially clogging effects, a 136 m high test facility for flow analysis in vertical transport has been constructed using available mining infrastructure. Tests are run in a closed circuit, using a system of downfall and riser pipelines connected to a compact sediment injection- and separation unit as well as the centrifugal pump. The riser is equipped with pressure sensors, as well as temperature sensors, flow meter, concentration meter and high speed camera to allow comprehensive analyses of the flow regime and behavior of transported material within the flow. Additional mobile measurement devices allow wear and tear analyses of pipe material. This paper focuses on the determining factors of the tests leading to the design as well as the installation and trial of the test facility itself and explains the used components and work principles. INTRODUCTION Since the 1970s several research projects had been conducted investigating in the possibility of deep sea mining. In recent times projects for deep sea mining operations have started again, considering the rising demand on natural resources, especially raw earth elements. Yet projects like the Nautilus project on the deposit Solwara 1 [1], or Japanese projects focusing on the region of Okinawa [2] and Chinese projects [3] planning on depths of “only” about 2,500 up to 3,000 m. Until now no economical deep sea mining project was realized, due to the enormous difficulties of deep sea environments. Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects, considering transportation heights up to 5 km. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems or VTS [4]. Critical parts of the system would be identified and investigated to deliver solutions and higher the technology readiness level to a level were planning of a pilot project can be considered. At first case examples for mining projects of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS, 1,600 m water depth) and manganese nodules (MnN, 5,000 m water depth) had been calculated on basis of economical frame conditions, such as planned production rates to be efficient. As depicted in Figure 1 two major possible systems had been used for comparison, airlift system and pump system, considering multiple pump stations or single pumps. Based on the results and comparisons for the calculated vertical transport systems critical components and flow effects had been identified."

On the 2nd of June 2007 SELI S.p.A. started the excavation of Beles Tailrace Tunnel (Ethiopia). The new 8,07 m diameter DS Universal TBM utilized for the tunnel excavation was manufactured by SELI S.p.A. and allowed the installation of 30 cm thick concrete lining, contemporaneously with the excavation of 7,200 m of tunnel. The greatest part of the tunnel alignment was excavated in hard and sound basal-tic rocks. The paper describes the main steps of the tunnelling operations which led to a remarkably rapid excavation, with a peak production of 36 m / day and a final break-through achieved 46 days ahead of the contractual deadline. Furthermore the paper describes the work and logistic organization that was set up to efficiently perform the mechanized excavation in the very remote area of the project.

The present discussion first presents data to justify the fireproofing of mine shafts. This is followed by a brief outline of fireproofing methods with examples from practice. A summary of authoritative recommendations on fire prevention concludes the discussion. Acknowledgment is made to D. J. Parker, district engineer, Mine Safety Station, Salt Lake City, Utah, for his valuable criticism of the paper. Fireproofing a mine shaft implies lining the shaft with fireproof material or rendering fireproof the material already composing the shaft lining. A brief study of the part mine shafts and shaft stations have played in disastrous end tragic underground fires furnishes convincing evidence that every possible effort to make all mine shafts fireproof is amply justified. The fire hazard in coal minus obviously is much greater than in metal mines. In this discussion the point of views is mainly that of the metal miner; it is tine opinion of the writer that all fires in metal mines are preventable.

With the recent increase in the number of underground secondary sulphide dust explosions in Canada, Australia and elsewhere in massive sulphide ore mining industry, establishment of quantitative and realistic methods of analyzing the mine dust is of paramount importance. This paper examines and analyses dust samples from a mine area that has very recently experienced sulphide dust explosions. Also, it attempts to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust. Explosibility of the dust samples was determined by quantifying the oxidation reaction of the sulphide dust particles in a 1.2 L, Lindenberg open horizontal tube furnace. Percentage sulphur', % S oxidised during ignition of a dust sample of known assay, % S and dust concentration (g/m3) were determined by the quantitative chemical analysis of SO2 gas produced during the oxidation reaction. A dust sample with high sulphur content, 22.3% S (assayed) and mean particle size 9.82 pm, was found to exhibit a low degree of oxidation compared with a sample of low sulphur content, 15.44% S and mean particle size 21.7 tcm, at the same Temperature.

The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

MEMBERS of the Engineering Education Committee held two meetings at Joplin preliminary to the opening of the main meeting there. The first was held on Sunday afternoon. It was attended by all who had arrived early enough and as among the dozen or' fifteen who were present the heads of a half dozen schools of mines were included it was a representative gathering. C: H. Fulton, chairman of the Committee presided and T. T. Read acted as secretary of the meeting. The chair., man reminded those present that last year there had been some discussion as to the advisability of the proposal, made by Edward Steidle, that a, separate society, devoted to education in the mineral industry, he organized. Many .people had felt that there are already so many societies in existence to demand one's time and attention, that it would be a mistake to add to their number and the counter suggestion had been made that the work of this committee could be so reorganized as to meet all the needs that a separate society could fill. He therefore presented for discussion these four' questions: (1) Shall a subcommittee .be appointed to study, and report in February, 1932, the possibility of the reorganization of the work of the Engineering Education Committee into the equivalent of an' Institute division; (2) if the work is so reorganized what shall be the relation of the work of the Committee (division) to the work of the-Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; (3.): what are the, cardinal objectives of education for the mineral industry; and (4) what should be done as regards the movement in some institutions to plan their work-in the light of that being done in other institutions, for example, in geophysics?

Managing blasting operations in four mines surrounded by villages is a challenging task. This study aims to compare the blast-induced flyrock as observed in opencast mines by predicting flyrock distance using a soft computing approach known as an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and Flyrock Predictor software based on empirical studies. Blast design and geotechnical variables such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge, unconfined compressive strength and rock quality designation were selected as independent variables, while flyrock distance was used as a dependent variable. Out of 120 blasts, data from 100 blasts was used to train and test the ANFIS model. Flyrock distance for the remaining 20 blasts was used to evaluate the model. Flyrock distance has also been predicted using Flyrock Predictor software based on an empirical approach using the same data sets as those used for ANFIS. Performance indices like root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error and coefficient of determination (R2) were evaluated to compare the reliability of ANFIS and Flyrock Predictor quantitatively. ANFIS was found to be a better predictive tool, with 1.75 m RMSE and 0.966 R2 compared to Flyrock Predictor, which returned RMSE and R2 values of 2.48 m and 0.932 respectively.CITATION:Trivedi, R, Singh, T N, Gupta, N and Bhandari, S, 2015. According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain, or Germany are only forerunners of this development—their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic, and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as how can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry’s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia, and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later.

"Silver and gold leaching by cyanidation is a well-known process used around the world. This reaction is often accompanied by the leaching of other species throughtout the cyanidation circuit that causes the diversion of cyanide towards non valuable by-products (SCN-, Cu(CN)x, Fe(CN)x, etc.). One of the detrimental impacts of the formation of these by-products is the precipitation of silver-cyanide complexes that occurs when cyanide concentration is too low. Without any extra-addition of free cyanide, the precipitated silver is lost and cannot be recovered causing an important economic loss. To overcome silver precipitation, cyanidation circuits are often operated at higher cyanide concentrations. Recently, COREM’s research team has been working on a technology to measure and control silver precipitation during the cyanidation process. Moreover, a methodology has been elaborated in order to evaluate threshold cyanide level which corresponds to the cyanide concentration at which silver starts to precipitate. This technology has been tested on site on a real cyanidation circuit at Agnico Eagle’s LaRonde mine."

In open pit mining, it is common that the bottleneck to productivity and profit lies in the truck-shovel mining operation, especially as strip ratios and mining intensity have increased with resource depletion and advances in mining equipment capabilities. This paper outlines a study of truck-shovel productivity using a new proprietary discrete event simulation platform for truck-shovel operations called MineDES. The study will specifically address the issue of whether truck queuing at shovels should be considered productive or not, and how mining engineers can determine the optimal truck fleet size for specific operational configurations.The MineDES simulation platform will be described and illustrated, highlighting the features that make it an appropriate tool for conducting the experiments at the heart of this study. The study encompasses a set of experiments, consisting of a number of simple truck-shovel operational scenarios for a benchmark open pit mining operation, which are simulated using MineDES. Each experiment is designed to highlight different factors, which are most important in calculating the ideal truck fleet size and for understanding the marginal productive impact of each additional truck added to the fleet. The scenarios will principally address the issues of how different types and levels of unscheduled equipment downtime and process variation, combined with the traffic delays/congestion arising in more intense mining operations, will affect productivity. The results of the experiments are interpreted using a simple fit-for-purpose cost and revenue model in order to highlight the indicative cost of over- or under-trucked configurations.The study has found that the optimal fleet size that maximises productivity and value will, in the presence of even small process variation, lead to non-zero trucks queuing at shovels on average. As process variations and unscheduled downtime events increase in the truck-shovel system, the required fleet size to optimise productivity and value increases. "INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to ascertain the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage. Associat¬ed with these tests, occasional records were made of the characteristics of the air blast or concussion from the explosions. Although the importance of the air-blast problem was recognized, the equipment was not designed for airblast measurements, nor was the early research program concerned with the problem. After the ground-vibration tests had been completed, attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect. The program was modified, however, in certain aspects by the imminence of war and the final entry of the United States into the conflict. These modifications were made to supply information pertaining to military and civilian defense problems.Detailed discussion of these problems is beyond the scope of this report, which attempts to present preliminary results of factual and fundamental character. However, it may be noted that airblast data are urgently needed for intelligent design of both Government and non-Government buildings, which must withstand the air blast from bombs and afford maximum protection for the occupants. The safety of vital equipment above and below ground necessitates consideration of damage from air blast. Protection against use of dynamite by saboteurs, moreover, hinges largely on the effect of air blast. Identification of a planned ""accident"" involving dynamite often entails knowledge of the characteristics and power of the airblast.The peacetime problem of damage from air blast resulting from quarry and mining blasting activities is of course exaggerated by the wartime requirements of increased production accelerated operation, and enlarged development."

In Rotterdam a number of underground parking facilities have been built and are under development in the inner city, and in the suburbs. These parking facilities are located at already densely built areas. The design of these constructions has to take into account the impact of the building activities and that of the final construction on the surroundings. In this paper some examples of the different building methods of newly realized underground parking facilities are described, and problems that occurred during the construction are pointed out. In the soil conditions as present in Rotterdam the cost effectiveness of underground facilities can be improved by deepening the parking facility, and at the same time reducing the surface area so that the total parking volume remains constant. In this way the total volume of the diaphragm walls and the costs of the project is reduced.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Engels mine is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Engels Copper Mining Co. operates two mines about 3 miles apart in Plumas County. Calif. Both mines send ore to the same mill, and the methods of the larger, or Engels mine, are described in this paper. Between 800 and 1,000 tons of 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 per cent copper ore are mined daily from this mine by a shrinkage method. Connection is made with the Western Pacific Railroad at Paxton by the Indian Valley Railroad, which is 22 miles long and operates a daily mixed train to the mine.

I was delighted to be invited to be patron of this Joint Conference, but the challenging task you have set yourselves, and your speakers' depth of expertise, deny anyone, even the patron, the opportunity to be patronizing. Australia's history has been inextricably link- ed with the fortunes of our great mining industry. That link will remain. Just as the gold rushes of the last century, and the discoveries at Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill changed the lives of generations, so the more recent development activity in iron ore, bauxite, nickel, coal, and uranium are having a significant impact on the lives of Australians today. The minerals industry has contributed to Aust- ralia's jobs and prosperity. Mining is not free of problems, but so long as safeguards are strong and appropriate the net benefits the mining in- dustry brings Australia will continue to be enor- mous. We rely on our mining industry to find, prove, develop and sell our minerals profitably, and my Government is committed to maintaining a healthy mining industry.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce risks of coal dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this NIOSH study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust (<75 µm diameter) in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity. Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing, and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle is operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings can be used to select sprays and design spray arrays to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. INTRODUCTION Coal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 microns in diameter, are deposited in return entries of coal mines and can be re-entrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; NIOSH, 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (CFR, 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal dust-fueled explosions. Water sprays are both effective and widely accepted as a method for controlling underground coal mine dust. In fact, water sprays are considered to be the most economical and technically feasible means of reducing dust concentrations in underground coal mines (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Barker and Humphreys, 1996). Sprays are used in several ways to control dust in mining processes: inhibiting dust formation, immobilizing dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, and capturing airborne dust (Cheng, 1973). Reductions in airborne dust concentrations have frequently been attributed to inertial impaction between water droplets and dust particles, forming larger agglomerates which then quickly precipitate out of the airstream (McPherson, 1993). Inertial impaction activity is generally accepted as the major capture mechanism for airborne particles larger than 0.5 µm in diameter. It is this mechanism that is evaluated in this study."
