"PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe R C Harris Filtration Plant underwent an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability consisting of a series of underground tanks within stepped excavations 12m (39 ft) and 10m (33 ft) deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts.Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the proximal front footing at 4mm (1/6 in), (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Through extensive Fast Lagrangian Analysis on Continua (FLAC) and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept and met deflection concerns.GEOTECHNIQUEThe hillside site drops 14.5m (47.6 ft) over a distance of 53m (174 ft) between the existing Filter Building on the north and the Services Building on the south. The soils adjacent to the Filter Building consist of 6m (20 ft) of sandy fills, to the footing elevation, over compact sands and layered dense sands and silts to a depth of 10m (33 ft) below existing footing. Beneath the silts lies a 10m (33 ft) thick stiff clayey silt, 2m (6.6 ft) of sandy silt till (containing cobbles and boulders) and an artesian gravelly sand at a total depth of 30m (98.5 ft).The tender information was deemed inadequate to accurately determine soil parameters for a finite element analysis. As a result, the design-build team performed pre-tender Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT), including dynamic analysis. The CPT data indicated stratigraphy consistent with the conventional bore hole exploration (SPT results) however, the CPT data provided consistently superior soil strengths. The CPT data indicated the sands and silts were dense to very dense throughout their full thickness. The clayey silts below the sands were found to have shear strengths in the 100 to 200 kPa (14.5 to 29 psi) range with an Over-Consolidation Ratio (OCR) ratio of 1.5 to 2. The dynamic analysis, while low strain, indicated very competent behavior with Young’s Modulus values in the 200 to 350 MPa (29,000 psi to 51,000 psi) range. The CPT derived shear moduli and OCR values were vital in determining the soil engineering parameters used for the FLAC analyses."

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. Wooden wedges, hammers and chisels, “fne setting”, to name a few, were the frst tools used to extract ore .or quarry rock for civilization. These inefficient tools and unsafe practices have been replaced today with some of the highest technology known to man. At the heart of most mining operations is the blasting program which utilizes one of the most efficient tools ever invented.. . explosives. Ever since they were invented, miners have been searching for more efficient products and methods with which to harness this “tool” and make it safer, reliable, and more eficient to use.

ABSTRACT - The Bathurst-Newcastle district, a subcircular area approximately 50 km in diameter, contains 37 massive-sulfide Zn-Pb-Cu deposits that have defined tonnages, and has 58 additional significant occurrences. The largest deposit is Brunswick No . 12, with total reserves (including past production) of 148 million tonnes grading about 12.50% combined Pb-Zn. The deposits/ occurrences are spatially associated with a felsic volcanic pile that contains a significant sedimentary component. In the vicinity of the Brunswick deposits the pile is divisible into lower and upper sequences. The lower is characterized by megacrystic rhyolite (QFAS) and coarse- to fine-grained quartz ( ± feldspar) wackes and/or tuffites (QAS); the upper sequence is characterized by aphyric to sparsely porphyritic rhyolites (HWR), micro-breccias, and acid hyaloclastites with interbedded dark gray sedimentary rocks. A greenish gray to dark gray siltstone (GGS) separates the two sequences and hosts the sulfide deposits. Lithogeochemistry of !east altered samples shows that the QFAS and HWR have an igneous character, whereas the QAS and GGS have a sedimentary sig­ nature. The two types can be distinguished on the basis of total alkalies (Na2O + K2O) versus SiO2/Al2O3, and Ti02 versus Fe/(Fe+ Mg). Some trace elements, such as Sr and Y, also help differentiate the two types. The QFAS differs from HWR by having higher La/Yb ratios but lower Zr and Th. The Bathurst deposits do not show a close spatial association with rhyolites but rather are stratiform bodies (lacking clastic textures) within fine-grained sedimentary rocks. The scarcity of barite and other sulfates indicates that there was little mixing between the metal­ bearing fluids and cold seawater. High Fe/(Fe+ Mg) ratios in chlorites also indicate the fluids did not contain a significant seawater component. These features and the large size of many deposits suggest that the deposits formed from metal-rich pore waters that were released catastrophically from an acquifer in the footwall stratigraphy.

Pyrite is ubiquitous within copper ores, and presents significant challenges to most operations in terms of its impact on copper sulfide concentrate grade and recovery.Samples of ore containing from 3 to 47 percent pyrite, with nominally the same chalcopyrite feed grade, were collected from a copper mine in eastern Australia for testing. The ores were ground under standard conditions using forged steel grinding media in the Magotteaux Mill® to determine the impact of increasing pyrite feed grade on the pulp chemistry of the system and subsequent rougher flotation response. Attempts were made to correlate the pulp chemical parameters (oxygen demand and EDTA extractable metal ions) with flotation behaviour to determine if one (or more) could be used as a metric to infer metallurgical behaviour.The observations made were then tested under different grinding environments (obtained using more electrochemically inert high chromium) grinding media to determine if they hold true.CITATION:Greet, C J, Karageorgos, P and Teixeira, L, 2015. The negative effects of pyrite and pyrrhotite on thiosulfate gold leaching have been investigated. Possible remedies to reduce some problems are discussed. In a gold bearing pure silicate ore, 92% of gold could be extracted within 3 hours using a solution containing 0.2 mol/L ammonium thiosulfate, 0.9 mol/L ammonia, 30 - 300 ppm copper sulfate and 8.6 ppm dissolved oxygen at pH 10.26. The thiosulfate consumption was 7.1 kg/t under these conditions and could be further reduced to 3.5 kg/t by decreasing the dissolved oxygen to 0.3 ppm. Addition of 16% pyrrhotite or pyrite into the silicate slurry led to a decrease in gold extraction by 2% or 9% respectively and an increase of thiosulfate consumption by 11 kg/t or12.8 kg/t respectively in three hours. Several adjustments, such as increasing copper ion and ammonia concentration and reducing the dissolved oxygen level to 0.3 ppm resulted in increased gold extraction and lower thiosulfate consumption despite the presence of these sulfides.

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. "A preliminary computational fluid flow model has been developed to simulate the flow field of liquid steel in the mold region of billet mold casting. This study reports the effect of different Submerged Entry Nozzles (SEN) on the fluid flow in round and square billet, curved mold, casters. In this study, ANSYS Fluent 14.5 software was used to model the 3-D turbulent flow of liquid steel. The standard k-0 model was used to simulate turbulence in the mold region. Similarly, the species transport equations were discretized to simulate the dye injection test into the mold cavity. The behavior of flow in the mold region was validated against previous experimental work. Predicted results showed that different nozzle types plus the slight curvatures in the molds can significantly influence the flow patterns generated within the mold region, and thereby affect the finished quality of the billet products.INTRODUCTIONConventional Continuous Casting (C.C) processes are presently used to solidify more than 95% of the 1.5 billion tons of steel now produced in the world annually (World Steel in Figure, 2014). This overwhelming contribution of C.C processes for steel production is the prime motivation for this study, in order to understand and optimize the casting processes and thereby reduce internal defects and minimize energy consumption. The primary objective of all C.C processes is to maintain liquid metal purity during the casting process and to create a uniform flow within the caster so as to avoid internal and external defects. In this regard, studying fluid flows in the mold region of continuous caster has attracted many research groups, in both academia and industry, in recent years. The mold region is one of the most critical parts of the C.C. process, in which the transport phenomena associated with this region can significantly affect the quality of the final products. Thus, proper control of fluid flows within this region can be expected to greatly decrease both internal and surface defects such as Oscillation Marks (OM), inclusion entrapment, and Mold Powder Entrapment (MPE). In the casting process, the fluid flow in the mold region can be affected by a number of variables, such as; the flow control system (stopper rod or slide gate), nozzle geometry, SEN (Submerged Entry Nozzle) depth, casting speed, mold dimensions, gas injection, and the application of electromagnetic fields. One of the most influential and easily-changed fluid flows are the jets of steel issuing from the SEN. Nozzle geometries are variable, consisting of a number of exit ports, different port angles, and/or port sizes, the bottom shape of the nozzle, and the SEN immersion depth (Thomas, 2001). The SEN characteristics can markedly affect meniscus surface velocities, surface level profiles, and turbulence levels that can vary in terms of the frequency and the magnitude of their fluctuations."

El estudio se divide en dos partes: la primera describe las generalidades de dicho método, mientras que la segunda muestra las pruebas metalúrgicas desarrollas con minerales de las minas "Casapalea", "San Cristóbal" , "Yauricocha" y "Tajo Abierto" de la Cerro de Paseo Co., así como las de "Austria Duvaz" "Victoria" y "Germania"de la "Negociación Minera y Metalúrgica Lizandro Proaño S . THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

The construction of drilled shafts as well as other cast in place foundation alternatives relies heavily on good practices from the contractor, engineer, and inspector in order to produce a quality foundation element. As many of the installation methods involve blind concreting processes, it is difficult to be certain of an intact concrete mass of the intended dimensions. A new integrity test has been developed that provides additional insight into the integrity of drilled shaft concrete. By measuring the temperature throughout the shaft via standard access tubes, the measured temperature profile can be compared to the normal signature associated with a shaft of the specified size. This article provides an overview of the new method development, test procedure, analysis, and results.

The paper describes a technique that has been developed by the Health and Safety Executive (USE) to make an assessment of the effectiveness of Health and Safety (H and S) management at complex sites. The paper then describes how the technique was adapted and used for the first time at a large coal mine. The results highlighted certain deficiencies in the safety management system, allowing directed advice to he given to management.

Across the life-of-mine, water is both an essential commodity to mining, and one of the most significant hazards. In Australia, a land of drought and floods, availability of water is a critical strategic risk for mine sites and neighbouring stakeholders, with both insufficient water leading to curtailed operations and contested space, and extreme water closing operations through flooding of mine sites, transportation infrastructure and unplanned regulatory restrictions. In addition to these major strategic risks, water must be addressed in operational risk management activities in many different ways.This paper develops a set of categories for classification of water risks based on academic papers from the water in mining literature. These categories are applied to media content analysis of articles in International Longwall News (ILN) (an online coal industry news site) obtained with the search terms ‘water’, ‘rain’ and ‘flood’. Identified risks are discussed within the context of the life-of-mine. The paper uses these same categories to analyse the treatment of water risks in a new coal industry risk management body of knowledge called RISKGATE (http://www.riskgate.org, Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, The University of Queensland). The discussion of water risks in both INL and RISKGATE is compared and contrasted to pinpoint opportunities (and a roadmap) for further development of a specific RISKGATE water module for site-based operations. "IntroductionIn the course of an investigation on the influence of black damp (a mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide) on the limits of inflammability of fire damp (methane) in air, some new information was obtained concerning the factors that determine whether or not a gas mixture is capable of self-propagation of flame. Volume for volume, carbon dioxide exceeds nitrogen in its extinctive action on flame, an effect which is generally attributed to the higher molecular heat capacity of the former. Argon, a as of lesser heat capacity than either, proved to Lave less extinctive notion. If, as seemed likely, the extinctive action of a chemically inert gas could be attributed entirely to its heat capacity, then helium should behave like argon; equal volumes of these two oases should exhibit equal extinctive action, for their molecular heat capacities are nearly identical at laboratory temperatures and, in all probability, remain constant up to and beyond flame temperatures. The experiments reported here show, however, that helium has proved to be more extinctive of methane flames than argon.Method Used in ExperimentsThe limits of inflammability of methane, in various ""atmospheres"" composed of mixture of air with one or other of the diluent were determined in a vertical glass tube, 6 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. The lower end of the tube was opened by sliding away a ground-glass joint and the flame of a small spirit lamp was immediately passed across the aperture. The tube was sufficiently long to enable observers to judge whether a flame was self-propagation for if a mixture were incapable of continued self-propagation pf flame, the lamp of flame formel above the source of ignition was extinguished within feet of its passage up the tube."

In almost all branches of industry, machinery and equipment in operation cause vibration. Some sources of vibration affect only the operator’s hands, fingers, and arms, while others have adverse effects on the entire -body. Various types and numbers of machines are utilized in the mining sector, and operators with them are exposed to mechanical vibrations caused by the mining machinery they use. A field study was conducted to evaluate the vibration risks to the operators using mining machines in open pit mines. Vibration levels and whole-body vibration (WBV) measurements using various types brands, and models of construction equipment were evaluated in three different mines in the west of Turkey and compared to the the criteria specified in the EU 2002/44/EC directive and ISO 2631-1 (1997) standards. The results showed that operators using mining machinery for 8 hours were exposed to WBV levels below the EU limit (1.15 m/s2), while 44% of these operators were exposed to levels above the EU action limit (0.5 m/s2). Measurement data collected from the working environment and the recommended improvements that need to be made to reduce WBV exposures are presented.

This study presents the results from centrifuge modeling experiments performed to understand the effects of temperature changes on the pullout capacity of scale-model energy piles embedded in normally- consolidated clay layers. The energy pile under investigation is an aluminum cylinder instrumented with internal strain gages and thermocouples, and its temperature is controlled using an internal electrical resistance heater. The energy pile was first heated until the temperature, pore water pressure, and volume change of the surrounding clay layer stabilized, after which the energy pile was cooled. Pullout tests were then performed on the energy piles heated to different temperatures to understand the effects of the preceding heating-cooling cycle on the pullout capacity. In addition, the clay undrained shear strength profiles were measured using push-pull T-bar penetration tests before and after heating. INTRODUCTION When a heat source such as an energy pile is embedded in a saturated clay layer, temperature changes will result in changes in pore water pressure as the rate of heating is typically faster than the rate of pore water drainage (Campanella & Mitchell 1968, Abuel-Naga et al. 2007, and Ghaaowd et al. 2016). Although all soils will initially expand during undrained heating, normally consolidated soils typically exhibit permanent contraction while overconsolidated soils exhibit expansion after sustained heating when drainage is allowed (Vega & McCartney 2015). Subsequent drained cooling typically leads to elastic contraction. Thermally- induced changes in pore water pressure and volume during transient heating and cooling may affect the soil- structure interaction of energy piles, as well as the ultimate capacity of the energy pile. This study is relevant as relatively few studies have been performed on the behavior of energy piles in soft clay (e.g., Ng et al. 2014), with most focused on the behavior of drilled shaft energy piles in stiff rock or overconsolidated clays (e.g., Laloui et al. 2006; Murphy et al. 2015; Wang et al. 2015; McCartney and Murphy 2017).

The Paradela dam has a spillway that makes it possible to discharge a maximum flow of 400 m3/s, the water discharges being on the river Sela, about 2km upstream the river Cávado. After the first use of the spillway, some landslides have occurred on the right bank of the river Sela as a result of the erosion generated on its base about one hundred meters near some houses of a small village. This paper presents a study performed for the slope stability where finite element results are taken into account. A monitoring program was established that essentially consisted of measuring sub-horizontal displacements in points located in boreholes at different depths and also phreatic levels. Some monitoring results are presented. Le barrage de Paradela a une décharge d’eau avec un débit maximal de 400 m3/s sur le fleuve Sela dans un endroit situé environ 2km sur l'amont du fleuve Cávado. Après la première utilisation de cette décharge, quelques glissements se sont vérifiés sur le versant droit du fleuve Sela résultant de l’érosion générée sur sa base dans une zone à 100 mètres de quelques maisons d’un petit village. Ce travail présente une étude réalisée concernant la stabilité du versant avec la considération des résultats des éléments finis. Un programme d’auscultation a été mis en place pour mesurer les déplacements sub-horizontales sur des points situés en forages à des différentes profondeurs. Quelques résultats de cette monitorization sont présentés. Der Ueberlauf des Padela Dammes ermoeglicht das Ablassen einer max. Wassermenge on 400 m3/s in den Sela Fluss, ca. 2 km flussaufwaerts des Cávado Flusses. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Ueberlaufes traten in ca. hundert Meter Entfernung zur Wohnbebauung eine Dorfes Erdrutschungen am rechten Ufer des Sela Flusses auf, die auf Erosionen am Flussbett zurückzuführen waren. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Boeschungsstabilitaet unter Beruecksichtigung von Berechnungsergebnissen der Finiten Element Methode untersucht. Es wurde ein essprogramm ausgearbeiten, das im Wesentlichen auf Messungen der Untergrundverformungen in verschiedenen Bohrlochteufen sowie auf Grundwassermessungen beruht. Im Folgenden sind einige Messergebnisse dargestellt.

A presença de elementos residuais nas sucatas ferrosas pode influenciar a qualidade do aço produzido na aciaria elétrica. Além disto, o cloro existente nos materiais orgânicos que acompanham as sucatas leva a problemas de ordem ambiental. Por este motivo, o acompanhamento destes contaminantes através de métodos de amostragem de sucata se torna uma tarefa importante na aciaria elétrica. Neste trabalho são apresentados alguns procedimentos de amostragem de sucata, bem como uma análise comparativa de sucatas processadas por moinhos do tipo shredder e sucatas sem processamento. Os resultados mostraram um aumento da densidade e a redução do teor de contaminantes (matéria orgânica, alumínio e aço inox) para a sucata processada por shredder em comparação com a sucata sem processamento. Complementando, é apresentado um perfil da concentração de cloro em diversos materiais orgânicos comumentemente encontrados nas sucatas.
