THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

"The Eglinton Crosstown Line was conceived as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a partially underground light rail line, announced in 2007 as part of the Transit City plan, which included the implementation of six other light rail lines across Toronto.There were 43 stops planned for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, 13 of which would be underground . For those underground stations a lot of specialty foundation works needed to be carried out. King piles, soldier piles with lagging and secant piles were mainly required fulfilling the tasks of installing the retaining wall system.The paper will focus on the original design and alternative solutions, discussing the benefits and limits of these. It will also explain the installation process in general as well as some specific features related to specific site conditions, e.g. limits in installation depth, soil characteristics etc. The required equipment will be explained showing the benefits and limits.INTRODUCTIONThe Eglinton Crosstown project is a 19-kilometre LRT line that will bring much needed relief to the transit woes of Torontonians. Traversing the city in an east-west slice across the midtown artery of Eglinton Avenue, the Crosstown rail line involves a combination of 15 underground stations and 10 atgrade surface stops. It is one of the largest transit infrastructure projects under way in North America today. Aecon has joined partners ACS Infrastructure Canada, Ellis Don, and SNC-Lavalin to form Crosslinx Transit Solutions (Crosslinx).As with many of today’s mega public transportation projects, the Crosstown LRT follows the Public- Private Partnership (P3) model. Aecon is an equal partner in the $5.3-billion Crosslinx consortium to develop the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project in Toronto. Upon the LRT's completion in 2021, Metrolinx, the region’s transit authority and also the project client/owner, will turn to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to operate it. The impact of this highly anticipated LRT line on commuters in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is expected to be dramatic and immediate once the first train leaves the station five years from now. In fact, Metrolinx is estimating that within its first 10 years of service, the Crosstown line will be carrying 5,500 passengers per hour (in peak direction) and making 100 million passenger trips annually."

Kenneth A. Moon (U.S. Army Materials Research Agency)—The authors are to be congratulated for a very interesting and valuable paper. Their discussion of the structural implications of the results shown in their Fig. 5, however, requires a small correction. The model of Speiser and Spretnak with 0 = 1 and z' = 2 is perfectly reasonable for the Ti-O a phase, but Eq. [3] is valid only for solutions sufficiently dilute that the number of empty sites excluded by more than one filled site is negligible. The composition at which intrinsic saturation occurs therefore cannot be deduced from Eq. [3], but but must be decided by consideration of the structural details of the phase in question. In this case, intrinsic saturation is expected not at the composition Ti3O but at Ti2O, because Ti2O has the anti-Cd structurel4 for which each filled octahedral site has two nearby empty sites, one in the hexagonal plane immediately above it, and one in the similar plane below it. The other two models, with ?=1/3 and 1/2, imply a distinction between octahedral sites in pure titanium which is not easy to justify. The problem of extending Speiser's and Spretnak's treatment in a general way to more concentrated solutions will be the subject of a forthcoming publication by the writer. M. T. Hepworth and R. Schuhmann, Jr. (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Dr. Moon for calling to their attention the paper by Holmberg which presents the results of X-ray studies of Ti-O solutions ranging from 0 to 33 at. pct 0 and quenched from various annealing temperatures between 400" and 1800°C. Within these ranges, Holmberg found three types of phases: 1) At high oxygen contents (above 25 at. pct) and low annealing temperatures, he found the anti-Cd(OH)2 structure referred to by Dr. Moon. In this structure each titanium atom is in contact with 3 oxygens and each oxygen is in contact with 6 titaniums, the "available" oxygen sites corresponding to every other layer of octahedral sites in the titanium matrix. The limiting composition is Ti2O. However, this anti-Cd(OH)2 structure was not observed for samples containing 25 at. pct 0 or less. 2) For the specimen containing 25 at. pct 0 annealed at 400°C an ordered Ti3O structure was observed. This structure is related to the anti-Cd(OH)2 structure but differs from it by providing only two oxygens adjacent to each titanium atom and thus is consistent with the model represented by Eq. [5] in our paper, with 6 = 1/3, z' = 0. 3) For dilute solutions and for more concentrated solutions annealed at higher temperatures, the structure corresponds to that of the metal with random distribution of oxygens among all the octahedral sites. Thus, it is interesting to observe that the thermo-dynamic indications of ordering in the vicinity of Ti3O can now be supported qualitatively at least by Holmberg's X-ray evidence of the existence of an ordered phase of the composition Ti3O. That is, for solutions with oxygen contents close to that of Ti3O, both the thermodynamic data and the X-ray data are more consistent with models based on the ordered structure of Ti3O than they are with the model which Dr. Moon suggests corresponding to "intrinsic saturation" at Ti2O.

Part II of a four-part series on the history of steelmaking in the US, points out the inadequate safety and living conditions that existed in steel mills at the turn of the Century. Also defined are furnace and process developments. OPERATIONS in steel plants today are highly mechanized. Men work in light, clean, orderly melting shops, making it difficult for old timers to convince young men that primitive, hazardous conditions existed in steel plants at the turn of the century. Working conditions then were very poor as compared to present day standards. In small plants especially, sanitary, locker, and washroom facilities, first-aid practices and stations were un- known Accidents were frequent and severe. Workers had a fatalistic attitude toward getting hurt. He who had an accident was looked upon as a hero. A dirty bandanna often served as a bandage. Infections were frequent. Electric cranes were in their infancy and broke down often Cables had not as yet replaced chains. Pig iron and scrap iron were loaded by hand in the stockyard, and stockyard locomotives were un- known; mules served as the usual motive power. It was not unusual to see recorded a delay of ½ hr in charging a furnace because of a balky mule. Furnace operations A few plants had primitive charging machines, but most furnaces were charged by placing scrap or pig iron on the paddle of a long peel, which rested on a bar across the furnace door opening. Laborers at the handle end of the peel, using the bar as a fulcrum, would heave the material into the furnace by a down and sideward motion of the peel handle. In time they became expert in placing these materials in the furnace, but it was hard, hot work, and a long time was required for charging. Cold charges of 25 tons required more than 12 hr for melting and re- fining the steel. Ports, doors, and frames were not water cooled. The charging and working area in front of the furnace was covered with steel plates. They were hot and often warped by the intense heat of the un- insulated checker chambers directly below. In the summer, working conditions on the charging floor were almost unbearable. Silica refractories were of poor quality. Because of this, and the inadequate training of furnace men in fuel control and furnace operations, roofs, front and back walls, and ends burned out rapidly. Dolomite machines were unknown; consequently, furnace banks and hearths were fettled with dolomite by the use of hand shovels. The round system required six or more men. Each man took a shovelful of dolomite and, in his turn, deposited it on the back wall and bank by a dexterous forward swing and twist of the shovel. The upward swing of the shovel partially protected his face from the searing heat of the furnace coming out through the wide-open door. Considerable skill and stamina were required to do this job properly. Reverse valves, usually of the cast-iron butterfly type, were located below the charging floor. They were operated by long levers on the charging floor level men they became warped, because of heat and abuse, great strength and skill were required to reverse them. Furnace operations were difficult. The quality and quantity of producer gas coming from irregularly stoked, hand-operated gas producers was uncertain and unreliable. Characterization of feed material with respect to expected concentrate grade and recovery is fundamental to the design of improved separation efficiencies and to achieve sustainable development in the utilization of our mineral resources. An important reference point for this characterization is the liberation-limited grade/recovery curve which represents the perfect separation, the best separation which can be achieved for a given feed material limited only by the extent of liberation. Now, liberation-limited grade/recovery curves can be determined based on 3D mineral liberation analysis of feed material. Thus, actual separation efficiencies can be compared to what might be expected for a perfect separation limited only by the extent of liberation. It is shown that 3D mineral liberation analysis based on X-ray micro CT (XMCT) is preferred to 2D section analysis which overestimates the extent of liberation. By way of example, procedures and experimental results are presented and discussed for feed material in the case of phosphate rock flotation.

"The data in this report are the result of a detailed, microscopic study of composite samples of mill products collected over a 14 day period. The samples were collected and assembled under the direction of W. R. Lindsay, superintendent of the Anyox plant, and are fairly representative of the heads, middlings, tailings, and products peculiar to the scheme of concentration practiced at Anyox in 1930.The work was done in the Cooperative Microscopic Laboratory at Salt Lake City, Utah. This laboratory was equipped by the mine and mill operators of the Salt Lake Valley and functioned under a cooperative agreement between the United States Bureau of Mines the University of Utah. This is the fourth of a series of papers 6/ dealing with a microscopic study of mill products."

The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. Important topics discussed among the attendees included the price of copper, community relations and education.

The United States is dependent on foreign imports for about 80 percent of its ilmenite, about 60 percent of its rutile, and virtually all of its monazite. Nearshore marine sand deposits and beach-complex sediments in the southeastern United States are important domestic sources of ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, and a number of other less well known economic heavy-mineral (HM) species. Because global onshore reserves of placer titanium minerals may fall short of demand in as few as 20 years, offshore research in HM placers will become more important. The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) defined by the shoreline and the 200-m isobath varies in width for the modern U.S. coastline from a fraction of a kilometer to about 150 km offshore of Cape Cod, Mass., and includes an area of about 3.91 x 105 km2. It probably contains 3-7 x 1011 m3 of sand and gravel which may locally contain commercially exploitable placer HM deposits.

D R. CHARLES W. ELIOT, the great educator and philosopher-he of the five-foot book shelf-recently gave expression to a thought I had long been cherishing as a private opinion, when he said: "It is obvious that standardization has become a dangerous adversary of progress in both education and industry." This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. I will quote only a few of his stanzas to illustrate his understanding of "A Standardized Existence" : A visitor at large, I stand Beneath a standard sky- Where everything is standardized To please the standard eye. The difficulty of accurately sampling cyanide gold bullion for valuation is well known, and nothing new or original is claimed in presenting this paper, but it was thought that a record of differences in the composition of bullion bars found here may be of interest to others, and perhaps helpful to those who have to do with theevaluation of cyanide bullion. This investigation was made after reading Mr. Sydney W. Smith's interesting paper on the Liquidation in Molten Alloys.*A method was in use of boring each ingot in two places and mixing the two borings for the sample. More accurate values were obtained, however, when the bullion was sampled in a molten condition immediately before casting into the ingot; the sample being so taken as to preclude oxidation of base metals before solidification of the sample.In all, samples from 32 ingots were assayed, and comparisons made between the existing boring sample and the proposed dip sample. Assays were also made of two other portions of the borings from each ingot, and the results show that in the majority of cases the borings sample assays higher in gold than the dip sample of the same ingot.The largest ingot cast weighs approximately 920 troy ounces, and has the dimensions shown in the attached sketch (Fig. 1). Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program. The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1986 was $405.2 million, a slight decrease from that of 1985. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite, crushed marble, and ferroalloys; third b fire clay; fifth in masonry cement and lime; sixth in total clays; and seventh in recovered sulfur. Alabama ranked 19th nationally in value of nonfuel minerals produced. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and stone were the major commodities produced.

Approximately six billion gallons of combined sewage are discharged annually into Willamette River and Columbia Slough through Portland’s combined sewer system. The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit (CSCC) is an important element of mandated Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) abatement. It includes2,548m (8,361 ft.) of 3.7 m. (12 ft.) internal diameter tunnel. The CSCC alignment traverses the UP railroad, Columbia Boulevard and parallels an old sewer. Geologic conditions include river alluvium and fine to coarse-grained flood deposits containing cobbles and boulders. This paper describes design and construction of a tunnel in soft-ground, with shallow cover and close to an old concrete sewer.

The method , which produces unbiased estimates from which valid confidence limits can be computed , is appropriate for bedded deposits of variable bed thickness and for vein deposits of variable vein width . Assay data from the bedded Florida phosphate deposit is used to illustrate the procedure .

GROWING use of basic slag in the agricultural industry is of special interest and importance to the iron and steel industry of the Birmingham district, providing an increasing outlet for this by- product. Such use of basic slag was first developed in England about fifty years ago where it soon became wide- spread. About twenty years ago the Tennessee Coal, Iron & R. R. Co. began its production in the United States after exhaustive tests had demonstrated its high value here as in Eng- land. It is particularly valuable on heavy clay and acid soils, improving their physical condition, increasing their alkalinity where that is desirable, and providing soluble phosphate and small amounts of manganese to soils deficient in these respects. Its use in agriculture is growing as its advantages are becoming more widely known.

My opportunity to serve as President of the prestigious Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) was made possible by an Anglo American scholarship 39 years ago—a pivotal moment that set me on a career path spanning various roles and start-up ventures in the mining industry. Over the past decade, I have been privileged to broaden my experience by consulting across diverse industries globally. This exposure revealed something profound: what I had previously considered mining-specific challenges are, in fact, universal across many sectors. At its core, a mining operation is a complex system of interconnected activities—from exploration through mining operations like drill and blast, load and haul, to beneficiation, and outbound logistics. My cross-industry work has clearly shown that diverse sectors, such as chocolate manufacturing, tissue paper production, toilet paper converting facilities, labgrown diamonds, or high-tech equipment lifecycle management, all rely on value streams of interconnected activities to transform products. The objective is to maximise throughput while effectively managing performance variability. The primary difference lies solely in the specific technical expertise required for each industry, such as chemical, mining, processing, or metallurgical engineering. Across all these industries, I have observed a consistent pattern, that is, performance is primarily driven by individual efforts, where people react and work diligently as situations unfold in real-time. General managers and their teams often operate tactically, focusing on explaining yesterday’s poor performance rather than proactively setting up operations for success. This often resembles an ‘‘under-7s soccer match’’, with everyone chasing the ball. The common response to issues is to add more ad hoc meetings. This effort-driven organisational behaviour persists regardless of whether operations are greenfield digital manufacturing facilities, advanced digital mines with advanced process control, or operations run on paper and Excel spreadsheets for data acquisition. Paradoxically, more real-time data can lead to increased data noise, greater indecision, and sometimes, lower performance. Despite value streams often operating significantly below capacity, organisations continue to invest heavily in additional equipment or in ‘‘glossy brochure promises’’ of Industry 4.0 digital technology and real-time data solutions, which frequently fail to deliver value. This leads to a critical question: Have we underinvested in our most valuable resource— people? Even Tesla faced this challenge with their underperforming fully automated Model X facility. We must shift our focus to designing the ecosystem, or operating model, of our organisations. This extends beyond the traditional triad of people, process, and technology, and moves beyond simplistic views of change management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to add significant value, but it also introduces another layer of complexity into designing the organisation of the future. My full presidential address below at the SAIMM AGM discussed the symptoms of an effort-driven organisation and covered the fundamental building blocks and requirements of an operating model, including recommendations on implementing a people-centric approach.

Technical sessions will be held in the morning and afternoon of both days. A smoker on Friday afternoon will afford an opportunity to get together socially. Saturday evening is left free for private parties to the beach at Galveston, where a wide variety of entertainment is available. On Oct. 4 there will be an excursion to Sugarland oil field, with luncheon at Boling and a visit to Boling sulfur mine and plant in the afternoon. "In Russia, 1.1 million tons of mercury-containing waste are stored. The amount of mercury in soils and heaps of industrial enterprises is estimated at 3000 tons; in dumps, concentration tailings, sludge dumps of the gold mining industry up to 6000 tons have been accumulated. Mining is one of the main sources of mercury emissions in the natural environment that poses a real threat to the natural environment. At present, the process of amalgamation is prohibited and not applied in gold extraction. The application of amalgam technology in gold mining led to the accumulation of highly toxic products in the form of gold-bearing amalgam and metallic mercury, with a mercury content of dozens and even hundreds of times greater than the maximum permissible concentration for soil (1). Therefore, mercury-containing tailings constitute an ecological hazard to the environment. According to published data, at waste storage sites of industrial enterprises, up to 50 tons of mercury enter soil annually, and up to 3.5 tons pollute the air. At the same time, mercury-containing waste due to the reduction of the country's mineral resources is an additional source of mercury. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle mercury-containing waste. INTRODUCTION Paperobjective: demercurization of technogenic raw materials (amalgamation tails, discharge outlets of tailing dumps) to be recycled. Under natural conditions, the mercury usually migrates in the form of three most common compounds: elementary mercury (Hg); mercuric mercury ion (Hg+2); methylmercuryion (Hg (CH3) +. Chemical compounds Hg (II) are found in natural conditions much more often than Hg (I).The authors propose to conduct demercurization of technogenic raw materials (mercurial tailings) in two stages. At the first stage, the mercury in the form of small balls, the finest particles (drip mercury) can be extracted by applying the gravitational method. We propose a method for centrifugal processing of crushed waste in the apparatus of Itomak company, Novosibirsk, as the basis of the technological process for mercury recycling. The extraction of metallic mercury out of mercury-containing waste into commercial products, according to the technological characteristics of the Itomak apparatus, reaches 86.0% (2, 3). At the second stage, the extraction of mercury out of technogenic raw materials is performed applying a sorption method and using carbon sorbents based on fossil coals. Hard coal of the Kuznetsk Basin has been already used for industrial production of active carbons (carbon sorbents) of the KAD-iodine type, which is one of the prerequisites that determine the choice to use it for the aims of this study."
