THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. OF the various minerals that occur in fibrous form known as asbestos, chrysotile is the variety most in demand for commercial uses, and, last year, over 683,000 tons of the various grades were produced in Canada and United States, exclusive of African and Russian production, which figures are uncertain. Production has not been able to keep up with the increased demand, and an acute shortage exists. Canada, Russia, and Africa are still the most important producers. However, Russia consumes most of its production at home and exports very little. The United States consumes over 60 pct of the total production and produces only about 4 pct of the total from deposits in Vermont and small quantities from Arizona. This paper will review mainly, some of the more recent developments concerned with the extraction and processing of this fibrous mineral for various industrial uses, such as textiles, insulation, building materials and brake linings.

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) seeks to define performance variability within similar tasks of an underground work crew and relate observed variability to a cost consequence. Performance variability is described using work site observations to determine the adherence to job elements con¬tained within a standard operating procedure. Key components of the WCPM include (1) job definition through task analyses and the ranking of job elements by perceived cost consequence, (2) observational techniques for establishing performance baselines by measuring adherence to safe and proficient job procedures, and (3) cost linkages between adherence to task procedures and measures of consequence for noncompliance. Data presented within this report were obtained through the study of shuttle car operation in an underground mine in Appalachia. Observed adherence to safe and proficient job procedures by opera¬tors matched well with the consensus profiles (measured through a nominal group technique) with min¬ing personnel. It was also found that experienced operators consistently outperformed less experienced, incidental operators. These findings imply potential use of the WCPM as a practical procedure for thinking systematically about the choices available to reduce performance variability. Field application of the model can offer useful data to evaluate training and financially support performance improvement strategies that can be tested for their ability to reduce human error.

"Although coal-mine explosions rank third among causes of underground fatalities, they receive more wide-spread attention than any other accidents in mines because frequently many persons lose their lives in a single disaster. Each bituminous coal-mine explosion endangers the lives of approximately 100 persons--the average number employed underground in a commercial mine. A critical analysis of coal-mine explosions in a restricted district gives a cross-section of relative existing explosion hazards, of common causes of ignitions of gas and dust, and of effective prevention measures. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is collecting data on coal-mine explosions in the various States, and this circular is one of a series analyzing the causes and recommending methods for thy prevention of similar occurrences,The data on this circular are based on records of the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines. Unfortunately practically all of the early records were destroyed by fire in the State House at Charleston, W. Va.; the remaining records were made available to the authors by N. P. Rhinehart, chief of the Department of Mines, and his cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.The earliest available reference to coal in West Virginia is that made by John Peter Lally who in 1742 found ""a great plenty of coals"" near a river later called Coal River. In 1809, Nicholas Roosevelt found coal along the Ohio River and used it on the New Orleans, said to have been the first steamboat west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1810, Conrad Cotts opened a mine near Wheeling and sold coal for domestic purpose in 1812, a mine was opened on the Ohio River opposite Mason City and produced 1,200 bushels of coal that year. In 1840 the total West Virginia coal production was 298,691 tons; in 1863, the production had increased to 444,468 tons, and in 1883, to 2,335,833 tons. During this period apparently most of the coal was extracted from coal outcropping on the hillsides; little danger of gas ignition existed at that time, but explosions from blown-out shots occurred frequently. On February 22, 1383 the West Virginia legislature enacted legislation providing for a mine inspector to inspect the mines of that State, to prevent mine accidents, and to insure properly ventilated mines.In a special report to the Governor on December 31, 1884 the Inspector of Mines reported:We have 5 shafts, in 4 of which there is more or less gas; and in 1 of our drift mines there was an explosion on the 27th day of March 1880, whereby 2 men were killed and a boy badly burned.Table 1 lists 287 explosions in West Virginia coal mines. Several early explosions were listed in the annual reports of the West Virginia Department of Mines as ""blown-out shots"" or ""powder explosions"". The injuries usually were described; explosives accidents have been eliminated from these and other available data, and only those in which dust or gas were involved have been included in this paper as explosions."

A series of evaluations is being made to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. These evaluations include the estimated operating and capital costs as well as recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The three processes considered in this evaluation are designed to leach alumina as aluminum sulfate from calcined clay with sulfuric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. The filtrate from leaching is then purified by one of the following methods: Removal of iron in electrolytic cells using mercury cathodes; removal of iron by chemical precipitation through the formation of an iron-manganese complex; or precipitation of the alumina from an aqueous-ethanol solution, leaving iron in solution. Both the operating and capital costs for these processes are higher than those for the Bayer process. For plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day, the estimated operating costs per ton of alumina are: Electrolytic iron-removal process........... $81.35 Chemical iron-.removal process............... 82.08 Ethanol purification process............... 86.17 The investment in mercury is not part of the operating cost since this cost is considered equivalent to catalyst cost which would not be shown. The estimated capital investments for 1,000- ton-per- day plants on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 are: Electrolytic iron-removal process...... $116,775,500 Chemical iron-removal process............... 99,418,900 Ethanol purification process................ 94,210,200 These investments include the working capital but not the land for each of the processes. Included in the electrolytic iron-removal process is an investment of $4,859,400 for mercury. Investigation of other methods for removing iron, of the decomposition operation, and of the leaching operation could reduce these costs.

THE statisticians had defeated Germany months before she invaded Poland. With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can't win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

The use of safe equipment, safeguards, and safe practices in the mining and allied industries should reduce injuries and improve accident experience. The object of this report is to give to the mining industry, especially metal mining, a graphic pictorial description of some of the safeguards, equipment, and practices used and followed in the iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district. Some of the subject material has been in use or has been established for many years, and some is relatively new. Some of the equipment was purchased commercially, and some was designed by the company employees and constructed in the mine shops. The photographs were taken by the personnel of the Health and Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, primarily for use in the Metal-Mine Accident-Prevention Course of the Bureau of Mines. In general, they are arranged under the following headings or subjects: 1. Accident statistics. 2. Support of ground. 3. Hoisting and haulage. 4. Explosives. 5. Fires, gases, and ventilation.

A NUMBER of factors, of varying importance, should be considered in assessing mineral land-here specifically coal land -for tax purposes. (1) Is the coal developed or un- developed'! (2) If undeveloped, is it surrounded by active development in adjoining properties? (3) Accessibility of railroad facilities to the property. Sometimes the railroad itself is of importance. (4) Cost of development of the seam under consideration, whether it can be developed by a drift from the outcrop or whether it will require deep and costly shafts or slopes. (5) Is it definitely known that the coal seam being assessed is of minable thickness and quality on the property? (6) Thickness of recoverable coal from the seam. (7) Quality of the coal. (8) Is the seam being assessed likely to be more costly to mine than other seams in the same district? (9) Is there an active market demand for coal from the seam being assessed? (10) Is the coal held only as protection to surface structures and in such location that it can never be mined? (11) Is the coal in a solid piece or is it in pillars that have been standing for some years as a result of incomplete mining in an old operation? (12) Expected percentage of recovery from the seam being assessed as determined by present mining practice in similar properties. (13) Value of the seam as indicated by sales of similar mineral rights in the immediate district. (14) Current royalty rates of leases for coal in the seam under consideration.

Conducting full-scale fire experiments in underground mines is difficult and expensive. Sometimes, it is impossible to carry out fire tests in mines due to the danger they pose to mine workers and the underground facilities. However, understanding the potential occurrence of fires in a mine and their dynamics is critical to developing an appropriate emergency evacuation plan, fire suppression, and firefighting techniques. In this study, a numerical fire model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with fire dynamics simulator (FDS) 6.7.6 was developed to examine the influence of tunnel bifurcation on maximum temperature beneath a tunnel ceiling. The model was validated using full-scale experimental data. The maximum ceiling gas temperature predicted using FDS and measured maximum smoke temperature during the experiment shows good agreement. The study shows that bifurcation could lower the maximum ceiling temperature of fire-induced smoke in a subsurface environment. The findings from this study apply to the broader field of ventilation and fire life safety in tunnels and other underground environments.

Introduction The Gold Quarry gold deposit is the largest bulk tonnage epithermal gold deposit in northeastern Nevada to be developed by Newmont Gold Co., formerly known as Carlin Gold Mining Co. Exploration and development of the deposit extended over a period of nearly 50 years before bulk tonnage mining became economically feasible. Proven reserves at Gold Quarry are currently estimated at more than 255 t (8.2 million oz.) of gold, accounting for more than 40% of the total Carlin Trend mineable reserves for 1986. Milling began in late 1985; dump leaching of lower grade ores began in May of 1986. The mill has exceeded the initial design throughput rate of 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) and is now processing more than 8 kt/d (9000 stpd). The dump leach facility will process more than 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lower grade ores in 1986. The Gold Quarry ore body is to be developed by an open pit that will eventually be 1830 m (6000 ft) long, 1220 m (4000 ft) wide and 300 m (1000 ft) deep. The mine currently produces 77 kt/d (85,000 stpd) on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day workweek. Planned pit production will increase to nearly 168 kt/d (185,000 stpd) in 1988. Production equipment currently includes one Demag H-/285, three Komatsu PC-1500 hydraulic shovels, two Cat 992C loaders and 21 90 to 135 t (100 to 150 st) haul trucks. In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. A WIDE variety of lead ore is treated by the Midvale Smelter, for it is a custom plant not only treating Company lead concentrate and direct-smelting ores but also custom ores and concentrates, principally from Utah, Idaho, and Nevada, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The principal operating departments of the plant are weighing and sampling, Wedge roaster, D&L sintering, blast furnace and drossing, and baghouse. The lead bullion produced is shipped to a subsidiary, the U.S.S. Lead Refinery, Inc., at East Chicago, while the by-products, such as matte and speiss, are shipped to other smelters or re-treated at the plant.

During the fiscal year 1935-36, the Ore-Testing Section has been active in carrying out a program designed to attain the objectives that have been set up for it. For the Purpose of standardizing important testing methods, an attempt has been made to develop a rationalized scheme for ore testing, starting with preliminary investigations to determine the physical and chemical properties of the ore, following this with a logical selection and trial of processing tests to find out how the ore may be most effectively treated, and concluding with a discussion of what interpretation may be placed on the results in terms of plant design and operation. A selection of Procedures that appear well-suited to the ore-dressing problems under investigation is included in the following paper of this report so that other experimenters may be enabled to verify our findings and to offer criticisms and suggestions for improving our practice. A tentative scheme for the evaluation of flotation reagents is being investigated, and some progress has been made in a study to determine the significance of small-scale testing. These projects have required 899 analyses. Papers on these and others on ore testing, such as testing for amalgamation and for cyanidation, will be included in future annual reports.

CLYDE WILLIAMS has reminded me that in the fall of 1929, gave, in MINING AND METALLURGY, an account of the hopes and aspirations of Battelle Memorial Institute, which was then just swinging into initial operation; and that therein I remarked that B.M.I. should stand, as well, for Better Metallurgical Industries, since helping to better them was the Institute's aim. So he has suggested that some of the betterments of the past fifteen years might well be listed. A yearly summary of progress comes pretty close to the ultimate in futility, for everything proved of value in that year had its inception in earlier years, and everything really new has still to be proved. Plenty of things hailed as wonderful achievements for that year, by some enthusiasts invited to contribute to the summary, turn out in later years to be inglorious flops. But over a decade and a half, betterments that are really such become self-evident, and recounting some of them can be done without guesswork or wishful thinking. An inventory of what was known and utilized in 1929 compared to what is now known and used is not too hard to make. Perhaps the most clear-cut picture of what is known and used at a certain date is drawn by the handbooks, textbooks, and equipment catalogs of that date, with scientific periodical literature forecasting what knowledge may later be used when it is verified and assimilated. The tools available for production or for research limit the application of old and the finding of new knowledge.

In most underground iron mines in the Lake Superior district the active workings are at considerable depth. When additional openings into such. nines are needed, operating officials are eager to discover more efficient methods of constructing them. In recent years, openings into two mines in the district were made by the borehole method,-which employs chilled-iron shot as the cutting medium. Others were made by the churn-drill method, in which pilot hole is churn-drilled and subsequently reamed to a desired but relatively small diameter. Both methods are comparatively new and unique, at least in some phases and in their application.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

When science and the human spirit come together amazing things can happen. This was perhaps never more evident than through the events that unfolded during August and October in a remote desert in northern Chile. On Aug. 5, the main shaft of the San José copper and gold mine near Copiapó in Chile?s Atacama Region collapsed, leaving 33 miners trapped more than 624 m (2,000 ft) beneath the earth?s surface.
