The social and environmental problems presented by the location of a large zinc/ lead ore body within one mile of a thriving town are described. The development problems are social, involving the education of the in habitants , and environmental, requiring the development of a planning strategy and the evolution of a baseline and post -operational monitoring system. The necessity for an environmental-impact assessment and a thorough baseline study is emphasized. The continuing psycho-social consideration of community reaction is advocated.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath midocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and om, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100 000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50 000 years prior to eruption.

Solid Energy is the largest coal producing company in New Zealand, employing 500 people and more than 250 mining contract personnel. The coal produced by Solid Energy plays a significant part in the energy mix for New Zealand being supplied to the coal-fired power station at Huntly. It is also supplied to a wide range of industrial users, NZ Steel, and primary processing. It is fair to say however that the positive economic and social benefits of coal have to some extent been overshadowed by the negative environmental consequences of coal mining.   Over the past two years Solid Energy have been actively researching and addressing the impacts that they currently have on the environment and making a significant investment in environmental improvements, rehabilitation projects and environmental research to address historical and ongoing environmental issues. These investments have been driven by the companyÆs commitment to its environmental policy, which states:   æSolid EnergyÆs overall environmental objective is for the cumulative result of all the activities we undertake to have a positive net effect on the New Zealand environmentÆ.   With such significant investment it is essential that the company is able to target expenditure wisely, ie invest where there is greatest environmental gain to be had, and are also able to actively demonstrate to stakeholders the improvements that are achieved. In order to be able to demonstrate the commitment and the steps that the company is making towards this goal a number of systems have been developed. Firstly an environmental management system along the lines of ISO14001 formalising the environmental processes, responsibilities, auditing and management review. Secondly as part of the planning element of the EMS an environmental management matrix, which allows the scoring of sites against environmental management goals, has been developed. Thirdly the monitoring and measuring tools have been upgraded with GIS driven relational databases installed for management of consent related information and monitoring results.   The development of the environmental management matrix has drawn on a number of existing systems such as the Australian Institute of Mining and Minerals Code 2000. In addition to adapting the scoring regimes from these methods the Solid Energy Environmental Matrix has been further developed to ensure that it reflects the actual environmental impacts on site, as well as the management and audit systems that are in place to control them at a strategic level. The development of this matrix has included a number of steps: +        reviewing the information that stakeholders would be interested in, +        reviewing what was already available, +        development of systems to collect data and benchmark the current         operations, and +        setting up support systems to ensure that the correct information would be provided for scoring.

Pyrite is one of the most common sulfide minerals on earth, which is usually grown with chalcopyrite and other sulfide minerals. In flotation practice, pyrite from different mines or different sections in a same mine may have different flotation behaviors. This is because the pyrite crystal contains lattice defect, including ionic vacancy and lattice impurity. The present work investigates the effects of three typical 3d transition metal (Co, Ni, and Fe) on the adsorption of CH3OCS2 −, OH−, and CN− on pyrite surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculated results show that Co impurity reduces the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite, while Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite. Co impurity has small influence on the adsorption of OH−, but Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies. Calculations on Mulliken charge population of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ indicate that the Mulliken charges of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ after OH− adsorption are more than those after CN− adsorption. This suggests that the ionic property of the M-OH- coordination bond is greater than that of M-CN- coordination bond, while covalent bonding of M-CN- coordination bond is greater than that of M-OH- coordination bond. The adsorption results are discussed based on coordination field theory (CFT).

Addressing nutrient deficiency, among other factors, is vital to the growth and establishment of plants in mine spoils and tailings ponds. Although several organic amendments are available for this purpose, it is important to determine the appropriate ameliorant for the selected plant species. This research examined the effect of different amendments on the growth and ground cover of Centrosema molle, Calopogonium mucunoides and Sorghum spp. in copper/gold tailings. Plant growth and ground cover drastically increased with the application of organic ameliorants, especially manure. Among the three plants, Calopogonium exhibited the best growth and has shown its capability to establish a dense ground cover even in unamended tailings. Results suggest that the plant species and the ameliorants used in this study could be effective in a low-input approach to mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Domingo, J P T and David, C P C, 2014. The problem of pollution of water by mine drainage is at least as old as the mining industry itself. However, research on the formation, composition, treatment, and abatement of mine water is a relatively recent historical event. At Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., acid mine drainage control has been an important area of work since 1944, at which time BCR began sponsorship of research at West Virginia University. The work at West Virginia University involved a detailed study of the acid mine drainage problem and led to the identification of iron oxidizing bacteria as important factors in the formation of acid mine water. The results of this research were summarized in 1954 by Temple and Koehler (1) who concluded that "no practical solution for the problem" of controlling acid mine drainage is yet known.?

The Air-tubes blasting method is provided in which a series of aligned boreholes are charged with explosive s and air tubes in a predetermined blasting pattern. The air tube is composed of cylindrical flexible tubes which have a predetermined width and length to be fit with the site boreholes. Within a preferred formation, each borehole is charged with the explo sives and detonators with an air tube installed just above the explosives. Stemming materials are filled above the air tubes. At the limestone mine of Sung-Shin Cement Co., in South Korea, these blasting tests were performed by a diameter 102 millimeter and 15 m long boreholes with the charging length of explosives was 8m to 10 m by the total weight of explosive 40 to 50 kg with 3m to 6m air tube which has a 76 mm diameter, and 1m to 3m stemming cover. Blasting results showed the about 10% to 30% explosives savings available and especially, the about 20% to 50% reduction of ground vibration with the low noise measures around 2dB to 5dB by this new blasting method which was compared with the conventional blasting methods. The explosives and air tubes may be alternately charged along the boreholes. The use of air tubes which were charged above an explosive layer allow to form the quantitative air decking in every blast hole. Therefore, the Air-deck effect can be easily obtained through this blasting method, and also easy to increase the fragmentation rate resulting in the more suitable mucking procedures at the working site with the minimum usages of explosives for the better economic operations in mine quarries.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the rock mass in high seismic risk environments has great potential. Unfortunately, there are many unanswered questions about how to best implement a hydraulic fracturing program at individual mine sites, and even how to best use our engineering tools to evaluate these plans. To give the hydraulic fracturing field tests at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine the best chance of success, fully-coupled, discontinuum numerical modelling Itasca’s 3DEC code was used together with statistical simulations of the fracture network. For modelling purposes, it was assumed that hydraulic fracturing successfully reduces seismic risk through 1) the creation of hydraulic fractures along a plane at each injection site, and 2) activation of existing discontinuities. A variety of scenarios for the mine were evaluated, which focused on site specific uncertainties (such as the spacing of the pre-existing discontinuities) and practical solutions (such as the hydraulic fracture spacing, selection of injection medium, and hydraulic fracture site location relative to production). The discrete fracture network (DFN) realizations were developed using available statistical data for discontinuities near where hydraulic fracturing was planned.

TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

"INTRODUCTION The Bulk Handling Technology has suffered an important development in the recent years, allowing the use of conveyor belts in the most important and critical applications. As a consequence of this, the reliability and lasting performance of the conveyor belt components is becoming more and more significant, thus the implementation of preventive maintenance programs is a must. The rollers are one of the consumables in the conveyor belts, which have to be changed once arrived to the end of life. The actual ways of detecting this moment always require intensive use of labour and they are not very accurate. Indeed, if the rollers get broken before replacement, the consequences could be very important, generating additional costs and operational losses. The R&D Department of ULMA Conveyor Components, has been working since early 2012 on the development of Monitored Rollers along with a Management Software to provide users the capacity to Manage and Monitor the rollers from its desk, getting continuous online information on the internal temperature of the bearings, on the working status of the rollers as well as the identification of the rollers close to their end of life so that they could be changed during the next maintenance stop of the conveyor belt. In short, a system of Preventive Maintenance for Conveyor Belt Rollers BACKGROUND AND CURRENT STATE The malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can suppose the standstill of the whole installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures like the rip of the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation where a continuous supply of material is necessary, a bare stop of one hour could entail huge economical losses. What’s more, many conveyor belts are several kilometers length or the access to some parts of them is very complicated. Due to these difficulties the inspection and maintenance operations can become expensive and hard going, with staff going over the whole area checking the correct condition of the conveyor and rollers, which means a dangerous activity. In addition, it’s quite common to find rollers working in very harsh conditions, completely exposed to the elements or working in corrosive closed environments like underground mines. These tough working conditions together with the very demanding features of Bulk Handling sector (high loads, speed, dangerous materials etc.) can bring the unexpected failure of a roller, even being designed to support them. Thus, to have the working conditions of the rollers real time is clearly required, in order to achieve an actual predictive maintenance of the system and avoid fatal failures. Nowadays the most common procedures to identify a broken roller is to hear how it sounds or use thermo-graphic cameras to measure their internal temperature, both of them implying workers inspecting the whole length of the conveyor while the conveyor is running. This means intense use of workmanship and operational safety level reduction."

Part 1 Originally, the copper produced at the Noranda ?smelter was shipped in the form of blister bars to the Laurel Hill refinery of the Nichols Copper Co., New York. In 1930 a refinery was built at Montreal East for the purpose of refining Noranda copper and copper from the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., at Flin Flon. After investigation of the probable costs of making anodes at Noranda and at Montreal, it was decided to make them at Noranda rather than to continue to make blister bars there. Fuel is a major item of expense in making anodes: and since less fuel would be required in making anodes from molten copper than in making them from blister bars, a lower anode furnace cost could be expected at Noranda than at Montreal. Further, the expense connected with making blister bars at Noranda would be eliminated. The cost of treating anode and wire bar furnace slags is a serious item in a refinery, and it was found that the cheapest method would be to ship such slags back to Noranda. With the anode furnace at Noranda, much less anode furnace slag would be made at the refinery. Against these savings which would be effected by making anodes at Noranda must be set the high operating cost of an anode furnace at Montreal, using only tank-room scrap and the Flin Flon copper. This furnace would be handling a comparatively small tonnage and would have a high cost per ton. The usual equipment for making anodes from. liquid copper consists of either a stationary reverberatory furnace or a tilting Tacoma-type furnace together with an anode wheel of the Clark or Walker type. The reverberatory type of furnace has been developed from the furnace used in the old Welsh process of smelting and refining copper, while the tilting furnace is a development of the holding furnace, which is essentially a Peirce Smith converter without tuyeres and provided with burners.

Recent advances in solid-state, field portable, fast framing video camera systems and PC based frame capture hardware now allow blast imaging up to 1000 frames per second. Up to 8 seconds of data can be stored directly into the unit, downloaded to a PC or archived to a standard VCR without data compression. Since no film processing is involved, motion analysis can be performed instantly and on-site within a few minutes. This paper will describe the design features and applications of the KineView 1256P system and compare these with the analogous aspects of fii based cameras.

Because of leakage through and around permanent stoppings in underground mines, more air must be forced into a mine than would otherwise be required for ventilation. As power costs increase, costs resulting from air leakage add increasingly to the operating costs of mining. The Bureau of Mines evaluated four different stopping construction techniques based on the ideas that (1) airtightness could be enhanced by brushing rather than troweling on mortar sealant and that (2) modified mortars (mortars containing glass fibers and other additives for increased strength and adhesion) would improve sealing performance. Air leakage tests comparing conventional to modified stoppings were done when the stoppings were built, after 6 months, after 1 yr, and following simple maintenance. It was found that stoppings can be built and maintained better if-- The area where a stopping is to be built is properly prepared. Stoppings are constructed using the techniques devised by the Bureau. Stoppings are periodically examined for leaks. Stoppings found to be leaking, especially at the perimeters, are resealed.

A pressurizing system was designed and built to apply a radial pressure of 5.000 psi to rock samples. Samples of the Bradford, Weir and Kirkwood sandstones were subjected to radial pressures parallel and perpendicular to the bedding in the system and the changes in conductivity, porosity and permeability were deter-mined. Asymptotic decreases in conductivity, porosity and Klinkenberg permeability were observed over the 0- to 3,500-psi range. From these data, the increase of formation factor over the same range was calculated. The cementation exponent expressed in the Archie equation was found to increase with pressu,re. The rate of change varied from formation to formation. Only small differences were observed for samples taken parallel to the bedding as comnared to those taken perpendicular to it except for the Bradford sand. Above 3,500 psi the data are not good enough to tell if the properties continue to fall-off asymptotically or in a different manner. A possible explanation for the probable litnit of the asymptotic rate around 3,500 to 4,500 psi is that this represents the maximum pressure which the formations have unrdergone during their geological life as a result of burial. INTRODUCTION For many years measurements have been made in the laboratory of the properties of oil-bearing sandstones with little consideration being given to whether these properties had been changed when the samples were moved from their original position in the ground to the laboratory. Relatively little has been reported in the literature on the effect of pressure on the properties of sandstones. The changes in permeability for eight typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure (0- to 15,000-psi range) was presented by Fatt and Davis' in graphical form. In 1953 Fatt' also reported the relationship between porosity and overburden pressure for four typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples (0- to 5,000-psi range). Fatt later described the changes of formation factor and porosity of 20 typical oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure changes (0- to 5,000-psi range) giving the values of the coefficients and exponents in the Archie' equation, and the more general Winsauer equation', where C, k and m are empirical constants, F is the formation factor, and + is the porosity. During the experiments of this investigation the core was contained in a neoprene rubber sleeve as shown in Fig. 1. It was held between two steel end members which were mounted in a steel cylinder. In today’s highly competitive market situation, it is of outmost importance for EAF steel makers to optimise their processes in order to reduce operating costs and to improve safety and reliability of the equipment. The laser based off-gas analysis technology, With laser units installed on the fix duct, downstream the combustion gap, uses the “Tuneable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy” (TDLAS). The system performs real-time off-gas emissions measurements of CO, CO2, O2, H2O and temperature. A closed-loop operation is in place for dynamic control of the chemical energy package combustion/post-combustion of CO, H2 and CH4 gases into the EAF furnace shell. A statistical framework which builds on a data analysis engine, based on Danieli Automation Q3Intelligence technology, evaluates the “fingerprint” of the process represented by average and deviation trends of both gases and other process parameters. Process fingerprinting is conceived both for offline profile optimisation and on-line control of the refining process. This paper describes how the technology has been applied and the results achieved at ACCIAIERIE BERTOLI SAFAU (Italy) 100 t AC Electric Arc Furnace.

In the recent 10 years the rapid development of Chinese steel industry has attracted the attention of the world. The technological progress of converter steelmaking has played an important role in this process. First of all, slag splashing has been extensively adopted by Chinese steel companies in various sizes of converters from largest to smallest ones, and even including those using special hot metal containing V and Ti. Remarkable metallurgical results have been achieved. Up to now the average converter campaign life has reached nearly 10,000 heats, and the longest exceeds 30,000 heats in three melt shops. Based on this process, the long-life combined-blowing converter steelmaking technology has been developed. Slag splashing has been used to form a gas permeable "slag mushroom" on the top of bottom nozzles to protect the nozzles. In order to keep the effective bottom blowing, furnace bottom thickness control technique has been developed to prevent the furnace bottom growth. It makes the service life of bottom nozzle the same as the converter campaign life (average 10,000 heats and longest > 30,000 heats). The complete combined blowing was ensured through out the furnace campaign. Concentration product [C][0] is in the range of 0.0023 ~ 0.0030%, the T.Fe in the slag is lowered by 4 ~ 6%, and the [0] in steel is decreased by 100 ~ 250 ppm.

This paper will examine the challenges involved in ventilating and cooling South African mines, with particular emphasis on solutions to the issues of heat (generally associated with depth), mechanization and energy efficiency. Comparisons will be made with other international mining areas. Some of the deepest mines in the world are to be found in the South African goldfields. The Mponeng mine is approaching 4,000 m below surface, with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) of between 60°C and 70°C. Mining at these depths has only been possible with the use of large refrigeration plants supplying cold air, water and ice to the workings. In the Bushveld Igneous Complex, where most of South Africa?s platinum mines are located, similar VRTs are being experienced at significantly shallower depths. This is due to the different geothermal properties of the host rock between the two areas. Existing mines are being forced to go deeper and new underground mines are being planned and constructed in other areas with widely differing thermal conditions. South African metal mining has traditionally been labour intensive for historical reasons as well as for the narrow tabular nature of many ore bodies. Due to cost pressures and labour problems, some mines have been investigating the possibility of using mechanized equipment, both diesel and electric, to increase production and to improve efficiency. Studies have been carried out to determine the effect of the additional equipment on the overall ventilation system and some of the conclusions are discussed. The use of diesel equipment adds heat and pollutants to the ventilation air but, although electrical equipment has a lesser effect on the ventilation systems, it is generally less favoured due to claims of lower flexibility/manoeuvrability. Mechanization holds the promise of more concentrated mining activities but, with higher localized ventilation and cooling needs. Systems which will control the provision of air and cooling more effectively are required and are being implemented. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the South African economy experienced significant growth which was not matched by the growth in infrastructure. Consequently, at present there is a shortage of electricity generation capacity which affects large industrial consumers, including mines. Increasing levels of heat and mechanization will require more electrical energy for ventilation and cooling. There are many initiatives underway to save power or to shift consumption to periods of national low demand and these will be described.
