Beryllium deposits in the northern Virgin Mountains , Clark County , Nev . , and Mohave County , Ariz . , about 70 miles northeast of Las Vegas , were investigated by the Bureau of Mines . The investigation indicated a widespread occurrence of beryllium- bearing pegmatites within an extensive belt of mica - schist . Several deposits with significant beryllium mineral concentrations were encountered . Only a few of the samples analyzed contained more than 1 percent beryllium oxide ( BeO ) ; in many of the samples , no beryllium was reported . The average tenor of samples from the more important occurrences was 0.25 percent BeO . Chrysoberyl is the predominant beryllium mineral in the pegmatite sills ; beryl predominates in the more massive bodies . Minute quantities of cesium and lithium minerals also occur , but no columbium , tantalum , or other rare minerals were found . Ore dressing tests on a composite sample containing 0.28 percent BeO which was representative of the pegmatite sills , indicated an 85 percent recovery of the chrysoberyl ( 70 percent recovery of total BeO ) by gravity concentration in a concentrate containing 17.6 percent BeO .

"Hematite pellets were electro-deoxidized to iron in molten sodium hydroxide to produce iron containing about 10-wt % oxygen. The anodic reaction was the evolution of oxygen on an inert nickel anode. Before the electrochemical reaction, there is a reaction between sodium hydroxide and ferric oxide to form sodium ferrite and, in order to compensate for the reduction in sodium oxide content, 1 wt % sodium oxide is added to the melt. In a laboratory cell, the cell voltage was 1.7 V with a current density of 5000 A m-2, a current efficiency of 90% and an energy consumption of 2.8 kWh kg-1.Introduction The iron and steel industry contributes about 2.3 bn tonnes/annum of the carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, which is about 10% of the total, and some believe that, in order to prevent a catastrophic rise in the earth’s temperature, carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced by 50% come 2050. However, by 2050, it is likely that the iron and steel industry would have grown significantly so that the production may have risen to 2 or 3 bn tonnes/year so in order to meet the 50 % reduction on today’s figure, the carbon dioxide may have to be reduced to 25% or less, which is a very demanding requirement. There are probably three ways of reducing the carbon dioxide output:1. By capture and sequestration, but this may be technically very demanding.2. Reduction using hydrogen in place of carbon."

The mucking out of sub-level headings by slusher and by Autoloader is described, and the performance and costs of both methods are compared. The introduction of the Autoloader is taken as an example to illustrate the meth-od used at the mine for evaluating the suitability of new equipment. The consecutive steps in the process are covered in detail -from the preliminary cost analysis and the preliminary estimate of savings and advantages, and the review of these data after a field investigation, through the elimination of dubious factors, and detailed time and performance studies at the property, to the final assessment of the new equipment and an evaluation of the initial forecast. The derelict Lake George Mine is located at Captains Flat in NSW, acommunity of approximately 450, which lies some 43 km southeast ofQueanbeyan. It straddles the Molonglo River, which flows toQueanbeyan and thence the nationÆs capital, Canberra. Catastrophictailings dam failures in 1939 and again in 1943 resulted in the transportand dispersion of thousands of tonnes of sulfidic wastes downstream,with terminal settling in Lake Burley Griffin, in Canberra. The mine wasclosed in 1962, and major rehabilitation in 1996 - 1997 addressed the riskof further collapses, and reduced water flow into the underground mine.Nevertheless, acid mine drainage from the mine, and seepages ofcontaminated water from the capped tailings dumps continue to pollutethe Molonglo River for some 30 km downstream.Environmentally, the highest contributor to the total contaminant loadof the river is the Main Adit Spring. This was shown to be a constantgroundwater-driven acidic flow, with contaminant generation resultingalmost entirely from the ingress of gaseous oxygen into the undergroundworkings. Long term remediation may be possible at source, by pumpingreducing gases into the sealed mine, but the probability of thistechnology succeeding to the required degree is yet to be demonstrated. For at least the medium term, treatment of contaminated water flow(s)will be required to achieve any of the water quality targets that may beapplicable to the river. Three methodologies were short listed, but anumber of strategic uncertainties remain, which the NSW Derelict MinesProgram will address. Future risk arising from long-term contaminantrelease by the treatment wastes must be considered. Appropriate data,and realistic long-term performance parameters regarding the relativestabilities of water treatment sludges are scarce, and make properevaluation of competing technologies problematic.

The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Recent developments in energy conversion, mining and minerals processing, pollution control, and chemical equipment have placed in-creased demands on heat-resistant alloys. Higher corrosion rates from oxidation, hot corrosion, and sulfidation have increased consumption of materials that contain critical and strategic minerals and in many cases have limited productivity. The Bureau of Mines is conducting re-search on substitute materials having greater resistance to high-temperature corrosive atmospheres above 6000 C compared to austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 304, 316, and 310, with the goal of conserving critical metals such as Cr and Ni. The substitute materials are based on Fe-Cr-Ni-Al compositions. Aluminum additions to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys significantly improve high-temperature corrosion resistance, particularly sulfidation resistance. In the alloy, devised by Bureau researchers, aluminum additions are held in the form of a second-phase precipitate, 8NiAl. Minor additions of Ti, Mn, and Si improve workability.

INTRODUCTION THE DEMAND for general knowledge on asbestos fibres has increased considerably in recent years. A few publications have printed data showing some of the physical and chemical prupertie3 of asbestos, but in many cases this information is difficult to find and is seldom available when needed. During the past ten years, Johns-Manville have received many inquiries on the physical and chemical properties of asbestos fibres. Fortunately, we had some of the information in our files, and we willingly supplied the data. To help relieve this need, we have tried to present briefly in this paper some of the interesting and out-standing properties of asbestos. This information was obtained over a period of years by search of the literature and by experimental investigations. PROPERTIES OF ASBESTOS FIBRES Table I (1, 2) presents, in convenient form for easy comparison, data on the principal properties of the several varieties of commercial 'asbestos' -actinolite, amosite, anthophyllite, chrysotile, crocidolite, and tremolite. Under each variety of fibre is a brief statement describing the properties in terms of structure, mineral association, origin, etc. Some of the more important data in Table I are expanded and presented in Table II (3). SOLUBILITY OF ASBESTOS A report ( 4, 5) discussing the effects of acids and caustic on asbestos fibres was published in Germany in 1927.

By plotting fixed carbon against British thermal units of coals free from mineral matter, and ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite, it is found that the coals of higher rank, from anthracite to the higher rank of the high-volatile bituminous coals, inclusive, can be separated into groups according to their degree of metamorphism by reference to their fixed carbon. Such charts show also that the coals lower in rank can be best separated into groups with respect to B.t.u., especially when plotted on the moist basis, that is, coal containing its natural bed moisture. A tentative scheme for coal classification was presented at the October, 1932, meeting of the Technical Committee on Scientific Classification, of the American Standards Association Sectional Committee on Coal Classification. This scheme was sponsored by Subcommittee IV on Tentative Classification of Coals, under the chairmanship of W. T. Thom, Jr. It proposed the grouping of coals according to rank by reference to fixed carbon and B.t.u., on the basis of coal containing its natural bed moisture but free from mineral matter. This scheme proposed classifying coals into four broad classes: (1) anthracitic, (2) bituminous, (3) subbituminous, (4) lignitic. The anthracitic class was divided into three groups designated as meta-anthracite, normal anthracite, and semianthracite. The bituminous class also was divided into three groups, low volatile, medium volatile, and high volatile. The high-volatile group was further subdivided into four subgroups according to moisture content, as fo1lows: (1) less than 5 per cent, (2) 5 to 10 per cent, (3) 10 to 15 per cent, and (4) 15 per cent and more. The subbituminous class was divided into two groups, group 1 including subbituminous coals having calorific values of 10,500 B.t.u. or more, and group 2 including those with less than 10,500 B.t.u. The Accident Analysis (ADA) computer program was developed at the Spokane Research Center (SRC) to provide a rapid broad-based analysis of mining accidents. Because the Bureau of Mines often needs this type of information for the development of viable research programs the ADA program was written to access and analyze accident data available frog the Labor Department's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This report describes the ADA program, the data it uses, and the potential value it has for planning mining research.

The Cook Islands (CI) possesses within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) a massive field of polymetallic nodules representing one of the world’s largest undeveloped cobalt deposits, along with large quantities of other metals critical to achieving global energy transition targets. In February of 2022 the Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) of the CI granted Moana Minerals a license to conduct our nodule exploration program. This paper describes how Moana Minerals chose to approach conducting exploration activities, one of the greatest challenges to Deep Sea Mining (DSM) development and the securing of the social license to advance to eventual mining of the resources, in an unconventional manner. The remote location of the project poses logistical challenges in mobilizing to and operating in the region and is a significant cost driver. Historically, exploration campaigns mobilized large vessels from mainland Europe, the Americas, and Asia as this model works well when contemplating long duration and widely temporally spaced campaigns without the need to revisit. Moana Minerals, when considering these challenges determined a multi-year deep sea mining (DSM) exploration program conducted in such a remote location can be better optimized by the deployment of a smaller yet highly capable “exploration optimized” vessel that is dedicated to the task and is based full time in the Cook Islands. INTRODUCTION The paper describes the challenges of exploration in remote regions including the South Pacific, and how an unconventional consideration of the problem led to the solution. Completion of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment begins with a detailed environmental scoping study, resource update sampling requirements, and engineering data and sample requirements, which identifies the exploration goals of the project and technology needed to accomplish those goals. The method walks the reader through vessel and technology selection, discusses the challenges of equipment selection considering size and capability, describes the final arrangement, and provides results from the initial exploration campaigns. We followed the project from conception through the shipyard conversion, mobilization, and initial operations in the Cook Islands. The result shows how a smaller vessel with limited budget makes a large impact on the exploration capabilities in the region while building public trust. The Anuanua Moana is the first dedicated deep sea minerals exploration vessel modified with a suite of technologies that allow it to compete technically with existing ships but operate locally in the smaller ports of the South Pacific. The unique combination of size and technical capability gives the Anuanua Moana advantages over other vessels. This paper shows the importance of the Anuanua Moana in the development of offshore exploration strategies in the emerging deep sea minerals space.

"Atlas Copco is introducing a new patented method for full-face boring. This paper presents the basic principles of the boring action and discusses the present experience regarding performance and costs. The Atlas Copco ""Full-facers"" are designed for hard-rock applications, although they are successfully boring in soft ground without major changes. The unique patented boring principle referred to as the 'Undercutting Method' permits these machines to bore, economically, in harder ground than machines based on the 'crushing principle'. This is mainly due to considerably lower cutting-tool costs, as the tungsten carbide tips only are in contact with one-third of the bored volume. The remaining rock is 'undercut' and peels off from a slight back pressure.The undercutting method also permits boring of non-circular headings and Atlas Copco has already manufactured two machines for rectangular drifts. This concept could revolutionize development work in mines employing trackless equipment."

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is the method of choice used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970’s, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6560 Mm3/d (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2832 m3/d (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm3/d (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

Early in the nineteenth century, coal from Clearfield County entered the eastern commercial market. Ashley reports that coal was moved down the Susquehanna River by ark from Clearfield to Columbia, a distance of 260 miles, as early as 18o4. Around 1850, the famous Moshannon or Lower Freeport bed was discovered. Several years later the Moshannon Basin was developed extensively, and the coal from this area soon acquired an enviable reputation as a high-quality industrial fuel. Today much of the original Moshannon Basin coal is worked out, and the Lower Kittanning bed has replaced the Lower Freeport bed as the principal source of production in southeast Clearfield County. With depletion of the thick underground deposits, the importance 'of Clearfield County as a coal Producer would have diminished rapidly, if it had not been for strip mining the thinner beds. About 60 percent of the coal produced in the county is strip-mined, and the trend toward this mining method is expected to continue as the older underground operations are exhausted. Many strip mines are working in beds that are too thin to be recovered economically by any other method.

PUBLIC debts, and the policies guiding public finance in Canada today, are in such a state that every intelligent citizen should be familiar with them, and should be concerned about them. None of you have robe reminded that taxes have already risen to a point where they both annoy and hurt you, but they should also alarm you; alarm you, not so much because of the taxation, but because of the mounting expenditures represented by that taxation. I have no hesitation, therefore, in presenting a paper dealing with public finance at a meeting of the Mining Institute, since all present are concerned,. both as individuals and as representatives of the industry. Moreover, it is important that engineers, particularly, should become better acquainted with the interlocking relationships of economics, public finance, government, and technology. While I am neither an economist, a tax expert, nor a chartered accountant, I shall try to tell you, from my viewpoint as an engineer and an interested voter, the story of public finance in Canada today and of certain causes and effects, and I shall venture certain conclusions. In doing so I may merit criticism by experts, but I will risk this in the hope that sufficient interest will be stimulated in the subject to persuade you, as individuals and as groups, to advance, or to institute, your own studies in public finance, and in turn to interest others. I hope that some of the ideas which will be expressed, or which may develop, will bear fruit. I fully realize that several eminently qualified men have spoken on this subject during recent months, and that many authoritative articles have been written. However, I approach it with confidence, because I propose speaking to you not as an authority, bur as one of you, having similar interests and similar engineering knowledge, who only a few months ago became particularly interested in the subject, studied it, and who now sets before you a summary of his findings, with the conviction that the situation is so serious that constructive planning and constructive action by all thinking citizens are imperative.

A laboratory-scale batch extraction unit and operating procedure for studying the hot-water separation of bitumen from Athabasca tar sands are described. The extractor evolved from earlier units and has been in use by Syncrude Research for the past 10 years. By using a unit such as this, it is possible to study tar sand feed quality and the effects of chemicals on the hot-water extraction process, while process variables are held constant. Data are presented to demonstrate the importance of surfactants to the process and the interrelated role of inorganic bases and surfactants.

The ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from the company's mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent, of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment. Gravity Concentrator The gravity concentrator has a capacity of about 465 tons in 24 hr. The mill buildings are of wood. The mill was built in 1905 to handle approximately 90 tons in 24 hr.; since that time several additions have been built and various changes have been made in the flow sheet. High-calcium limestone has been intermittently produced from the Monarch quarry since the late 1800s. Initial production was used in sugar processing and for a smelter located near Salida, Colorado. During the 1920s, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) began to exploit the deposit as a source of flux stone for its blast furnace steel operations at Pueblo. The deposit was operated for many years as a captive quarry by CF&I. In 1984, CF&I closed the quarrying operations at Monarch; flux stone was no longer required since the blast furnaces were taken off line in 198 1. In 1994, Colorado Lime Company, a subsidiary of United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. Limestone was mined from the Castle Butte Member of the Leadville Limestone (Lower Missippian). Some high- magnesium dolomite was also mined during WWII from the Redcliff Dolomite Member which directly underlies the Castle Butte. Past production was from both an upper and lower quarry at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 m-3,353 m) mean sea level (m.s.1.). The reserves at Monarch quarry are in a dip slope deposit, occupying the northwest slope of Monarch Hill. The structural geology of the deposit is complex on both a region- al and mine scale. The reserves are located on the eastern limb of the Syncline Hill syncline. The beds on this limb of the structure strike to the northeast and dip to the northwest from 30 to 45 degrees. A major reverse fault separates the reserves into an upper and lower deposit. Numerous smaller normal and reverse faults cut the deposit, requiring a flexible mine plan. At the Monarch quarry, the Castle Butte Member con- sists of two stratigraphic units. The Upper unit (Mlu) is a thick-bedded, fine-grained crystalline dolomitic limestone from 0 to 300 feet (0-90 m) thick. The unit generally has an Si02 content of less than 4 percent. A bedded chert horizon and a karst horizon at the base of the unit locally raise the Si02 content as high as 20 percent. The underlying Quarry Stone unit (Mlq) is a light-gray, massive, bedded, calcilutite/micrite limestone from 90 to 130 feet (27-40 m) thick. The Quarry Stone unit is remarkably uniform chemically throughout it's entire thickness. Average analysis is CaC03 - 95 percent, MgC03 - 3.5 percent, and Si02 - 0.5 percent. The Footwall dolomite unit (Mld) of the Redcliff Member of the Leadville Limestone is a dark gray to black, blocky, medium-to-thick-bedded, calcilutite/micrite dolomite from 150 to 180 feet thick (46-55 m). The upper 100 feet (30 m) of the unit is a low-silica facies with an average Si02 content of less than 0.5 percent. MgC03 content is con- sistent at 39.8 percent throughout the upper 50 feet (15 m) of the unit but varies from 15 percent to 39.8 percent in the lower portion (50 to 100 feet [15-30 m]) of the low-silica facies. The lowest portion of the unit, 100 feet (30 m) to base of unit is high in silica and is not considered chemical grade. Current in-place, surface-minable reserves at the quarry are estimated to be 14 million short tons (st) (13 million metric tons [mt]) of limestone and 50 million st (45 million mt) of dolomite. A 1.4 million st (1.3 million mt) stockpile of finely crushed limestone is also present on the property. Colorado Lime is presently processing approximately 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per month from the crushed limestone stockpile. This material is pulverized and sold to underground coal mines for use as rock dust, some of this product is also used for environmental purposes. Limestone mining is scheduled to resume in spring of 2000.

The electro-magnetic separator of Mr. G. Conkling, Glens Falls, N. Y., described by Mr. Birkinbine* in a paper at the New York meeting of the Institute, in February, 1889, has been in successful operation at the Tilly Foster 'mine for a considerable period, under the disadvantages which seem to be the inevitable attendants of pioneer enterprises in new technical fields. The results of a run of several months, which the Superintendent, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, has taken pains to collate, are here presented by his courteous permission, and that of Mr. E. S. Moffat, the energetic and skilful General Manager of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, to whom our profession is already indebted for examples of bold and ingenious practice in mine-engineering. It is believed that these figures will assist those who are planning similar operations to decide intelligently what they may, and, more important still, what they may not, expect to accomplish. The local difficulties in the way of this experiment at the Tilly Foster mine were many and great. Only about two-thirds of the waste-dump, resulting from the assorting of previous years, is ore; and this varies in content of iron from 20 to 28 per cent. The remainder is rock, some (from horses in the vein) showing particles of adhering mineral, some (from the foot- and hanging-walls) entirely barren. The expense of overhauling the dump and removing this rock is by no means the least of the numerous items which must be charged against the concentration. Associated with the lean ore are hornblende and other minerals, carrying iron in the non-magnetic state, which must necessarily be washed away with the tailings.
