Cyprus Pima is a medium-sized open-pit copper mine located 35 km (22 miles) south of Tucson, AZ. The ore body was discovered using geophysical prospecting methods in 1953 and was originally worked as a small underground mine followed by small open-pit operations. As mining equipment grew larger and the economic ore grade dropped, the operation grew in size, through four expansions, to the present 50 500 tpd (56 500 stpd) milling rate. The remaining stripping ratio is about 2.5 to 1. Mining equipment includes 11 electric shovels ranging in size from 6 to 15 m3 (8 to 20 cu yd) and 42 diesel-electric haulage trucks ranging in size from 89 to 223 t (100 to 250 st). Mine planning is performed at Cyprus Pima to serve several functions. The most important is to plan ahead, one year at a time, to predict the ore grade and stripping requirements on a month-by-month schedule. This yearly plan is necessary for budget preparation and is revised once each quarter to incorporate variations in actual production experienced during the preceding quarter.

To decrease reliance on foreign sources for the strategic and critical metals gallium and germanium, the U.S. Bureau of Mines identified and developed processing technology for two domestic sources of these metals: a Tennessee zinc residue and a Utah ore. Sulfuric acid (H2S04) solutions were used to solubilize gallium and germanium in both sources. Statistically designed experiments showed that the most important parameter for high metal extraction from zinc residue was the H2S04 concentration. At a concentration of 2.9M H2S04, 95 pct of the gallium was extracted, and at a concentration of 0.6M H2S04, 73 pct of the germanium was extracted. Controlled H2S04 concentration was also the key for high metal extractions (97 pct Ga, 87 pct Ge) from the Utah ore. Such control was achieved using a two-stage countercurrent leach circuit. Testing showed that the insoluble germanium in both the residue and ore was tied up with silica. Several methods for overcoming this problem are given. To recover gallium and germanium from the leach solutions, the solvent extractants octylphenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) (for gallium) and LIX 63-OPAP (for germanium) were identified. These extractants were tested in separate, continuous, solvent-extraction circuits yielding a gallium recovery of 94 pct and a germanium recovery of more than 90 pct.

"As the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) enters its 35th year in 2015, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. In the past three decades, ground control has made a tremendous advancement, and many case studies published in the 36 volumes of proceedings have demonstrated its important role in the daily mining operations. However, there is still plenty of room for improvements. This paper discusses the research needs in 12 subject areas, including mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps.INTRODUCTIONThe International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was founded in 1981. Since then, 1,546 papers have been published in the 36 conference proceedings, including the three surface subsidence workshops held in the 1981, 1986, and 1992. All types of topical areas regarding mining, from geotechnical core loggings in the exploration phase through backfilling after mining to finally spoil piles stability on the surface, have been addressed. A review of these papers, and other related literature as well, indicate that ground control has developed to become an inseparable part of mine design and a problem-solving tool for safe production.After 34 years, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. There is no doubt that the conference series has achieved the goal for which it was originally designed: to provide an annual forum for the exchange of information among the researchers, government regulators, equipment manufacturers, consultants, service providers, and—above all—mine operators. There have been many papers addressing the application of ground control techniques for successful mine design and safe production, and, without these papers, many projects would have failed. In fact, the conference emphasis on application types of papers may have steered too far toward the application side. A review of the conference papers shows that papers have been leaning mostly toward the applied side, leaving most, if not all, fundamental issues behind in nearly every topical area. This paper addresses research needs in 12 topical areas: mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps."

The Greater Vancouver Regional District completed installation of a 2.5 Km long, 2400 mm diameter concrete sewer in Delta, British Columbia in 2000. The sewer traverses through area of peat and soft ground. The ground investigation along the sewer alignment consisted of cone penetration tests and auger drilling with standard penetration tests. The gravity sewer is supported on precast, pretensioned spun concrete piles imported from Malaysia which had never been used for a major project in North America. The capacities of the installed piles were tested using pile driving analyzer (PDA) and three static load tests. A total of 46 PDA tests were carried out during pile installation. The paper describes the pile vetting process the owner went through prior to accepting the piles for use in the project and performance of the piles. It compares the pile capacity estimated from the PDA tests with that estimated from soil mechanics methods using data from cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests. The ranges of estimated capacities calculated by different methods are discussed from design capacity selection considerations.

SOME eighty years have elapsed since the discovery of the Clifton magnetite deposit. For a few years about the time of the Civil War it was mined for iron ore. most of which was smelted on the property. Since risen the small exposures of ore in the old cut. test pits, and on the dumps have been examined by various prospectors. The M. A. Hanna Co. first became interested in the possibilities of the deposit when we discovered the large area of strong magnetic anomalies caused by the margnetite bed, indicating a size that would support a commercial operation. In 1940 we made a detailed magnetometer survey of the area. and the deposit was diamond-drilled. The main ore lied was found to be 1500 ft. long, to average 60 ft. thick, and to dip southeast at an angle of about 40 deg. The thickness of the bed is irregular in wavy folds both along the strike. and down the dip. Faults occur at both raids of the main deposit.

The synthesis process of BaTiO3 from TiO2 and BaCO3 in the molten NaOH-KOH at 350oC was studied by the A.C impedance technique. The A.C. impedance of molten NaOH-KOH (xNaOH = 0.36) and the variation of the conductivity of the salt with time during the synthesized process were measured. The synthesized reaction of the BaTiO3 and the decomposition reaction of BaCO3 are fast and were finished in 10min. The interaction between TiO2, BaO and BaTiO3 and the molten salt was confirmed by the variation of the conductivity.

"The Ordos coal field is located in the northern midwestern part of China (Fig. 1). Since the mid- 1980s, it has been developed into one of the major coal fields in the world, producing approximately 833 Mt (918 million st) of raw coal in 2013. There were once more than 400 coal mines operating in the region. However, due to the combination of market conditions and implementation of government consolidation policies, the number of coal mines operating in recent years has been reduced considerably, with increasing output.The surface of the Ordos coal field is covered with loess and alluvium layers of varying thicknesses. In many areas, their combined thickness may amount to as much as 100 m (328 ft) underlain by thin bedrock. Many loess and alluvium are aquifers receiving water from rainfalls. There are also gullies of varying depths crossing the coal field. Figure 2 is a typical stratigraphic column highlighting the coal seams and roof and floor rocks of interest.In conjunction with the development of highproductivity coal mines, numerous ground control instrumentation tests have been conducted in the operating longwall panels. Analyses of the results of those tests offer the opportunity to understand the effect of wide-ranging mining and geological factors on the overburden movement. For this reason, trips were made to coal mines of interest to interview mine management and collect their unpublished internal research reports on ground control instrumentation. In addition, literature searches on published thesis/dissertations and papers in the professional journals were performed. Finally, data from a total of 95 fully mechanized longwall panels were collected. The instrumentation involved primarily the monitoring of hydraulic pressures of longwall shields, from which the first roof weighting and first roof caving interval and periodic roof weighting and periodic roof weighting interval were identified and determined. Some panels also included measurements of roofto- floor convergence at the face, roof strata bed separation, longwall face sloughage and the height of caving and fractured zones in the overburden. Those 95 panels were located in 20 coal mines (Fig. 1) congregated along both sides of the Wulunmulun River with the following mining and geological conditions. All together those 20 mines produced more than 224 Mt (246 million st) in 2013, accounting for approximately 27 percent of the total coal production in the Ordos coal field:1. Period of mining: 1991-2013.2. Mining methods: All panels employed the one slice, full-seam natural-caving longwall mining method like those practiced in the United States. All panels were developed with a twoentry system with a single-row of chain pillars measuring 20- x 20-m (65.6- x 98.4-ft) wide.3. Coal seams (Fig. 3): Coal in Ordos coal field is high-quality steam coal, that is very low in sulfur, potassium and ash, but high in Btu. Data were collected in panels mined in a total of 10 seams with 82 panels in four seams and the remaining 13 panels in six seams. The first six seams (1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2) were mined by the Shenhua Coal Group (the world’s largest coal company) and the #4-2, 5-2, 6R, 62, and 62R seams were mined by both the Shenhua and Yitai Coal groups. In each coal group, the sequence of mining was in descending order. For example, in Shenhua Group, the top seam 1-2 was mined first, followed by the 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, and 4-2 seam in that descending order. In Fig. 3, the top-down sequence of coal seams is listed from left to right in each coal mine group. All seams were near horizontal with dip angles less than 3°."

"Tell us how you got involved in mining and about your career path.My dad was a coal miner and my uncle was a metallurgist, so when I enrolled at Penn State’s New Kensington Campus, I chose the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences — exact majors didn’t get picked till the end of your sophomore year. Penn State New Ken had an associate degree in mining program and one of the guys in my carpool was going to take Mining 30 in the evening and the other guy (mechanical engineer) was also able to take an evening class. I didn’t want to break up the carpool, so I took Mining 30, complete with essay tests. I could write, so I did well, and the professor said I should go into mining engineering. Fast forward to the end of the next term at University Park, and I realized there wasn’t enough chemistry in mining. Switching to metallurgy would have meant another term at that point, so Dr. Lovell, my advisor, trotted me down the hall and to the next building and said I was a mineral processor. That stuck. I was a summer student at U.S. Steel Research between my junior and senior year and they paid for my master’s degree — all about clay and macerals in coal flotation. During that time, the steel industry tanked, and I thought a Ph.D. would be a good idea — I could always teach at the university level if I had those credentials. The Electric Power Research Institute had a Coal Cleaning Test Facility in Homer City, PA, and I conducted my Ph.D. research on rate and residence time in conventional coal froth flotation cells there and at a local cleaning plant. I went to work at the test facility in 1987 (later CQ Inc.) and stayed there until I started PrepTech Inc. in 1997. PrepTech offers some consulting services for coal cleaning plants and sells mineral processing equipment, mostly to coal companies. I can’t believe it’s been 21 years.And what about your SME career?Of course, I was a student SME member at Penn State. We used many of the SME books in class, so who wouldn’t want the student discount? While in Homer City, I became involved with the Appalachian Plateau Subsection of the Pittsburgh Section. We’d hold quarterly meetings with interesting speakers and had good attendance. I was the secretary. I’m still the secretary and also get the bank statements. We’ll need to close that out some time, but I guess I’ve been hoping for resurgence in the Indiana/Cambria/ Somerset area."

Uma grande fração de todo o aço plano produzido é de aço de baixo carbono acalmado ao alumínio, não apenas pelo baixo conteúdo de oxigênio residual em solução que pode ser obtido mas, também, pela importância do alumínio residual na formação de AlN, ferramenta importante no controle de estrutura e textura obtidas. O sistema Fe-O é relativamente bem compreendido e quantificado, da mesma forma que o sistema Fe-Al. Entretanto, há discrepâncias significativas na quantificação do comportamento do sistema Fe-Al-O havendo, ainda, bastante controvérsia com respeito a equilíbrios importantes. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é (a) realizar uma revisão crítica dos experimentos e avaliações termodinâmicas principalmente do equilíbrio Al-Fe-O–Al2O3 (b) avaliar os métodos atualmente usados para descrever este equilíbrio e (c) apresentar recomendações sobre os dados, com base em sua confiabilidade e consistência.

The author, who himself has worked inn the field with various types of torsion balances, expresses in the article his experience with the recently marketed Haff-Torsion-Balance. The advantages of practical work with Haff?s s torsion balance as compared with other types are mentioned. In spite of low weight and corresponding small dimensions (Model M = 23.5 kg., Model Al = 11.5 kg.) the sensitiveness is not less than that in the largest instruments. It is at 1.10-9, which is proved by calculations. A comparison with the corresponding values of other types of torsion balances (Eötvös, Askania, Gepege) is given. The mechanical features of the instrument are briefly described, and the balance is illustrated by a, cross section of it. -- W. Ayvazoglou. Research was conducted to develop a simulation and animation model for an aggregate (sand and gravel) mine operation. This model can assist the mine engineers to investigate and consider the various options of haulage systems which are critical for the mine operation productivity. Discrete-event system simulation studies can be used for the typical haulage issues that mining engineers are often faced with: using truck fleet haulage, conveyor belts, or a combination of both. The simulation has identified some strengths and weaknesses in the current loading and hauling fleet of the mine, and has resulted in some suggestions for improving the system. The simulation includes animation of the operation. Animation is needed to enhance the benefit of any mine simulation model. By combining the visual power of animation with a mine simulation, a complete picture of the mine system is obtained and displayed. The mine is modeled and animated using GPSS/H® and PROOF Professional®, both of which have shown great applicability in discrete mining simulation projects.

A unique telemetry system was developed to monitor potentially unstable natural slopes above a residential area. Continuous interpretation of data transmitted from remote movement-sensitive devices and immediate communication of signficant changes to emergency personnel were made possible by a readily available "home" computer. Even though the computer based system was originally developed for a non- mining application, it could be used with little or no modification to monitor ground control instrumentation in open pit and underground situations.

The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

MAGNESIUM alloy tubing and hollow shapes are finding increasingly wider usage in practical applications today. Square and rectangular tubing and hollow shapes find [ ] greater diversification in use than standard round tubing. Typical applications are roller conveyors, ladder rungs, spools, furniture, tank car loading tubes, athletic equipment, and business machine parts. In general, the amount of tubing and hollow shapes produced represent a minor portion of the magnesium extrusion business. The magnesium alloys in which tubing and hollow shapes are being produced together with typical properties are presented in Table I. MI A alloy is a low cost alloy possessing good welding and stress corrosion characteristics together with moderate formability and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for low strength applications. AZ31 B, alloy is used for moderately stressed applications and possesses good corrosion resistance and formability with fair welding characteristics. AZ61 A alloy has slightly higher physical properties than AZ31 B alloy together with good formabil- [ ] ity and corrosion resistance but slightly poorer welding characteristics. AZ80 A, ZK60 A-F, and ZK60 A-T5 alloys are used where the maximum in physical properties is required. AZ80 A alloy possesses fair corrosion resistance but with formability and welding characteristics inferior to' the other alloys. ZK60 A-F and ZK60 A-T5 alloys, while only recently offered for com¬mercial use, are finding favor due, to the higher permissible extrusion rates. These alloys possess greater toughness than AZ80 A alloy and, while of moderate formability at room temperature, are very formable at 300° to 500°F. The major portion of tubing and hollow shape production at the present time is in AZ3I B alloy. STILFONTEIN and surrounding areas gave nega-tive results in all prospecting attempts since about 1904 when Goerz and Co., a forerunner of Union Corporation Ltd., first drilled in the region and on the farm Stilfontein. Subsequent efforts by African and European Investments Co. and Anglo American Corp. from 1934-37 were completely unsuccessful. Holes drilled by these companies on the farms Riet-fontein, Hessie, and Palmietfontein were stopped in the Lower Witwatersrand system without finding payable reefs. The results of gravimeter, ground magnetometer, and aerial magnetometer surveys are presented in the area, in and around the new Stilfontein Gold Mine, in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal in the Union of South Africa. The gravimeter and ground magnetic surveys were completed in 1947—48. The gravity anomalies suggested a block of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites faulted-up between denser rocks of dolomite and Ventersdorp lava. Boreholes S.T. 1, 2, and 3 were drilled in 1948 and, after penetrating the dolomite and Ventersdorp lava, entered Upper Witwatersrand quartzites and intersected the Gold Estates Reef and Vaal Reef. Subsequent drilling delineated the suboutcrop of the Vaal Reef and determined the main structure of this horizon. The gold content of the Vaal Reef was highly payable and shaft sinking is now in progress. The Stilfontein Gold Mining Co. has been formed and, up to date, f5,000,000 capital has been raised for plant, shaft sinking, and development. The payable Vaal Reef horizon extends further south from Stilfontein, the reef occurring at increasing depths. It is possible that at least another mine may be established on these deeper horizons. The farm Stilfontein 39 is situated in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal. This farm and the surrounding areas have been subjected to repeated programs of prospecting dating back to about 1904, when Goerz and Co., the forerunner of Union Corporation, Ltd., first drilled on the farm and in the surrounding areas. From 1934-37, numerous boreholes were drilled on the neighboring farms, Riet-fontein. Hessie. and Palmietfontein, by African and European Investment Co. and Anglo American Corp. All these efforts were completely unsuccessful, and nobody suspected any possible gold-bearing area on Stilfontein until about 1947, when a gravity traverse run by B. D. Maree on the main road, showed a negative gravity anomaly. During 1947-48, the writer's organization completed gravimeter and magnetic surveys on Stilfontein and Rieffontein. An area of negative gravity anomalies was mapped, and it was suggested that this could be caused by blocks of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites, of the average density of 2.65, faulted up between dolomites and Ventersdorp lavas, the density of both of these rocks being 2.8. Fig. 1 shows the geology of the area as mapped by L. T. Nel of the Geological Survey of South Africa. The boreholes on Stilfontein, with the exception of a single hole of Goerz and Co., were drilled after the completion of the geophysical survey. The grouping of the first boreholes S.T. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, clearly shows that these were located in the zone of negative gravity anomalies. Fig. 2 shows the gravity anomaly contours. Fig. 3 shows two sections across the gravity anomaly, together with the corresponding geological sections as obtained from boreholes. The close relation between gravity values and thickness of dolomite plus Ventersdorp lavas is striking. The two latter formations having the same density (2.8), act as one mass as far as gravity effects are concerned. Fig. 4 shows the magnetic anomalies observed on the ground by vertical magnetometers and at 500 ft abbve mean ground level by aerial magnetometer. The latter are anomalies of the total magnetic intensity. The magnetic results show that, on the farm Rietfontein and on the northern half of Stilfontein. Lower Witwatersrand magnetic shales were to be expected at relatively shallow depths. As the strongly

THE second award of the Saunders Gold Medal for "distinguished achievement in mining," of which the first was awarded last year to the late D. W. Brunton, has been made to Herbert Hoover. The main events of Mr. Hoover's life are so familiar to all through the numerous journal articles about him and his work, and the interesting biography written by Vernon Kellogg, that no attempt will be made here to touch on anything other than his achievements as a professional mining engineer, for which the award was made. He graduated in mining from Leland Stanford, Jr., University in 1895, but had served as an assistant to Dr. Branner on the Arkansas Geological Survey in 1893 and had also worked two sum-mers as an assistant to H. W. Turner and Waldemar Lind-gren on U. S. Geological Sur-vey work in the Sierra Nevada around Lake Tahoe, and on the American River. Immediately after graduation he got "a job" underground at Grass Valley, and soon rose to be night shift-boss. He then secured employment with the late Louis Janin and made such a good record as office and field assistant that he was soon placed in charge of a small mine at Carlisle, N. M. In 1897, Mr. Janin recom-mended him to Bewick, More-ing & Co., who were looking for an examining engineer for their staff in Australia. Two years were spent in hard work there which was done so creditably that his princi-pals held him and his judg-ment in the highest regard, and he came to the head of their local organization. Among the properties which he acquired for them was the Sons of Gwalia.

The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45' north and 116° 30' west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims' end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. To one with so little experience in matters pertaining to currency, international finance, and foreign trade, this is surely an ambitions venture on my part. However, this is a subject of prime importance to all seriously minded Canadians and, if we are to obtain any clear understanding of the factors involved, we must study the facts and debate such points as may remain at issue. During the last few years, the world' s better known economists have described the gold standard in all its ramifications and in such detail as to leave many of us even more confused than before. If we, then, are to acquire any real conception of its meaning and use, I think we must reduce it to its fundamentals and start from there. To my way of thinking, gold in ? trade and commerce is the symbol of honesty. When you seek to discharge a debt by tendering paper you hand the recipient an I.O.U. which may or may not be good, for the purchase of goods or services to the extent of its face value. When, however, you discharge a debt by the payment of gold, it constitutes a complete and final discharge. There are no reservations - no ifs and ands - and the transaction is definitely closed to the satisfaction of all concerned. Gold, then, is evidence of accumulated and transferable wealth that is immediately acceptable in practically every part of the world. However, there is not nearly enough gold to meet the demands of world trade, and. many years ago this deficiency gave rise to what we now describe as our banking system.
