Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. The technology for copper utilization from circuit boards etching is proposed. The technology is based on combination of electrochemical and sorption methods. The conditions of copper electroextraction from ammonia-chloride solutions with obtaining of cathode copper are defined. The stage of electrolysis is destined for copper recuperation from etching process. Due to the electrochemical processes are unacceptable for cathode precipitation of the copper from diluted solutions such as rinse waters, the concentration on the strong-based cationites are used. After filtration throw the sorption columns solution is directed to the stage of circuit boards washing. It allows organizing close loop water recirculation. After saturation. resin is 'regenerated by chloride ammonium solutions. Obtained eluate directed to the etching stage, Generally. the technology provides copper recuperation and minimize wastes amount.

The Baltimore Red Line Project is a proposed 22.7-km (14.1-mile) long east-west light rail transit (LRT) line envisioned to connect the areas of Woodlawn, Edmondson Village, West Baltimore, downtown Baltimore, Inner Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Campus. The Red Line LRT System has two tunnel segments - the Cooks Lane Tunnel (CLT) and the Downtown Tunnel (DTT). The CLT segment is roughly 1,920-m (6,300-ft) long. It commences at the west portal located at the highway ramp for I 70 (to be removed) and terminates at the east portal that is at the intersection of Edmondson Avenue (U.S. Route 40) and Glen Allen Drive. This segment of the project consists of the following construction components: approximately 1,458 m (4,786 ft) of tunnels, 143 m (469 ft) of cut-and-cover tunnel, and 318 m (1,045 ft) of retained cut (U) section. The approximate horizontal alignment for the Red Line LRT Project is shown in Fig. 1.

Number of mine accidents occurred in Indian surface mines are due to poor quality of explosives and blasting accessories. Amlori open cast project is one of the major coal producing projects in India. Standard drilling and blasting parameters are used to achieve desired productivity of the mine. 150 and 260 mm diameter blast holes are used for blasting in coal and overburden benches. Most of shovel benches are 12 to 16 m in height and dragline benches vary from 25 to 30 m. High-energy bulk emulsions are used for blasting. The cup density and velocity of detonation of bulk emulsion explosives are 1100 to 1200 kg/m3 and 3.8 to 4.5 km/s respectively. An incident occurred on fire bench of Amlori open cast mines during mucking of blasted muck.

THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. An economic and operational evaluation of the unrecovered metal, physical conditions, and chemical environment in a leach pad should be made prior to decommissioning. This evaluation will help determine the possibility and method of secondary and/or enhanced metal recovery and the method(s) to be used for detoxification and heap closure. The evaluation requires quantitative sample collection in a locally variable, yet grossly homogenous material. An assessment of a valley fill heap leach pad was made using a technique borrowed from placer technology called sonic drilling. The sonic drilling technique produced very satisfactory core recovery and sample quality. At this site, drilling results demonstrated that the method of heap construction produced expected features after extensive long term leaching. Rather than a uniformly homogenous pile of metallurgically depleted crushed ore, an assemblage of solution channels, un-oxidized sections, unleached areas, and compaction due to various factors, were found. These conditions are thought to represent a normal, rather than unique, situation for a valley fill heap leach. The lack of this information can have a significant impact on the economics and methods of heap re-handling and ultimate closure.

Fox the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordilleran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations. of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the, result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,1. King,2 Gilbert,3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler,8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. Coal resource data from public and private sources, in conjunction with previously published data, were used by the Bureau of Mines to determine the location and extent of strippable coal resources in Colorado. Total strippable resources of approximately 18 billion tons were estimated in 12 separate coal regions, fields, or deposits. Coal recoverable by contour mining techniques was not included. Criteria used in defining strippable resources were a minimum coalbed thickness of 2 feet and a maximum overburden thickness of 150 feet, except where the coalbeds are of exceptional thickness. Ail Colorado coal is either Cretaceous or Tertiary in age. Cretaceous coals occui In the Dakota Sandstone, the Mesaverde Group, and equivalent formations while Tertiary coals occur in the Dawson Arkose, the Fort Union and the Wasatch Formations, and equivalent formations. The strippable coal ranges in rank from bituminous in the Yampa region to ligniferous in the Denver basin. Ali this coal is low in sulfur content (less than 1 percent); ash content is low to high; heating value ranges from 3,000 to 12,000 Btu's per pound. Ash from the lignite of the Denver basin was found to contain an abnormally high percentage of kaolinite which conceivably could be recoverable as alumina.

Separation Technologies Inc.’s (STI) electrostatic separation technology is a dry, continuous process for the separation of discrete particles. This high-volume process does not require any additives nor is any additional waste produced. In December 1993, STI, in cooperation with New England Power(NEP), installed an 18-t/h (20-stph) prototype electrostatic separator at NEP’s Salem Harbor plant. The plan was to convert waste streams of type F fly ash into commercially valuable products. In July 1995, a second separator was installed at NEP’s Brayton Pointplant. Fly ash feed, ranging from 6% to 25% carbon (loss-of-ignition fly ash or LOI), is separated into <3% LOI “clean” ash and sold as a portland cement substitute in the New England concrete markets.

"An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys, to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions, and laser scanner over a 6-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls was significantly lessened. INTRODUCTION Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the presence of tectonic loading of the strata. Horizontal stresses have a documented history of causing stability issues in underground limestone mines. Kuhnhein and Ramer (2004) discussed the influence of horizontal stress on complex ground control interactions associated with limestone pillar design and mine layouts. Esterhuizen et al. (2008) documented roof damage observations associated with high horizontal stresses such has roof guttering, beam instability, oval-shaped falls, and failure propagations. There have also been a number of documented case histories of horizontal stress causing unexpected roof and pillar failures at shallow depths (Stacey and Yathavan, 2003). To the knowledge of the authors, there has only been one well-documented case of floor failure causing stability issues in an underground limestone mine. Murphy et al. (2015) documented the role that a weak, moisture-sensitive floor had in the development of a massive roof collapse. For this paper, the study site neighbored, and was in the same general geology of, the site in Murphy et al. (2015). However, the weak, moisture-sensitive floor was not present for the current study. The current study site has experienced significant floor instabilities caused by high horizontal stresses. The instability area was monitored using two different methods to determine if the floor failure would eventually propagate into roof or pillar failure. The objective of this paper is to analyze displacement monitoring measurements from string potentiometers and remote sensing techniques in an area experiencing active movement. Based on the measurement trends and observed damage from inside of the mine, the presumed failure process will be discussed."

In the present work, the viscosities of molten FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 semi-synthetic slags for nickel flash smelting were measured in the temperature range from 1473 to 1723K by a rotational viscometer. The ratio of Fe to Si02 was fixed at 1.2, calcium and magnesium oxide contents varied in the range from 2 to 8 mass% and 9 to 12 mass%, respectively. The results showed that silicate anions became smaller by increasing CaO content, which results in a decrease of the viscosity of the slag. In the case of MgO addition the viscosity behavior was complicated. At MgO content below II mass%, the viscosity increased with the increase of MgO at all temperatures tested. However, when the MgO content was above II mass%, the viscosity decreased slightly for FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 system. At higher MgO contents, low-viscosity slags can be obtained by adding CaO. At a given composition, .the viscosity decreased with increasing temperature. The higher the temperature, the more MgO can be added before saturation. The effect of Fe3O4 on the viscosity was quite significant. The viscosity of slag increased by 300mPa-s at 1573K when Fe3O4 content varied from 3 to 9 mass%. The viscosity values are presented as the functions of temperature and composition. A comparison between FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 systems is given in this study.

"The future trading of carbon credits and increased financial cost necessitates substantial cuts in incidental C02 emissions in the production of metals (iron, steel, aluminum, zinc, lead). Although greener methods of production are being developed, in the short term the use of point-source C02 extraction using existing technology remains attractive. Accelerated natural carbonation, in a fluidized bed is a feasible technological route investigated in this research. CFD modelling has been used to study the efficiency of C02 capture in a fluidized bed reactor containing a CaO solid sorbent. A Lagrangian/Eulerian scheme describes describe CaO particle trajectories and exchange of mass, momentum and energy with the carrier gas, with a typical off-gas composition. Different reactor geometries are considered (with uniform, stepped and gradually expanding cross-section), to maximize conversion for a given particle loading and size distribution (100-200 microns). Removal efficiencies of up to 80% are demonstrated, making this a viable process.IntroductionBased on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, the major cause of climate change and global warming is due to a high level of C02 concentration in the atmosphere resulting from fossil fuel combustion, particularly in coal-fired power plants [1]. Carbon capture and storage is therefore the most important action proposed to reduce C02 from combustion flue gases. In this process, carbon dioxide is captured and may then be regenerated as pure C02 and conducted to a permanent storage, or simply stored as a solid carbonate [2]. Capture and storage of C02 has an economic penalty and the main cost of this penalty is associated with the capture plant. Capturing C02 with a lime-based solid sorbent (CaO) is a very promising technique, due to the low cost and the wide availability of the reactant. "Separation in Froth (SIF) is a process for the separation of mineral particles during their descent downwards through a moving froth layer, generated on the surface of water or some other liquid media by means of a bubble generator and frother. Due to the special operation principles of SIF it is possible to separate mineral particles that are about 10 times coarser than the optimal particle size for conventional flotation. In this paper the performance of the SIF technique is presented in the separation of apatite, calcite and silicate minerals from various industrial sources, based on tests with laboratory and pilot plant-scale SIF machines. Basic laboratory test results of the flotation of pure diamonds are also presented.It was shown that calcite, apatite and diamonds with particle size up to about 3 mm can be successfully floated with SIF at high recovery and grade, provided that the degree of liberation is sufficiently high. Coarse calcite (+0.25-2.8 mm) was concentrated with reverse SIF in one flotation step at 87% recovery with better than 99% grade. Apatite particles coarser than 0.2 mm are not well floated in the conventional flotation circuit leading to high P2O5 content in the coarse size fractions of flotation tailings. On the contrary, SIF is capable of recovering such coarse particles at high recovery. However, P2O5 content of the SIF tailings starts to increase at about 0.7 mm due to insufficient liberation of apatite. At higher particle size the lack of hydrophobicity of apatite particles is also likely to lower the recovery.The pilot plant testwork showed that SIF can be successfully used at operating plants not only for preliminary upgrading of the feed of conventional flotation, but also for producing final grade calcite concentrate (>99.5%) from the screen overflow or from the cyclone underflow in a particle size range up to 1 mm. It was particularly promising that the separation took place in one SIF flotation step, instead of several stages of the conventional flotation circuit, with over 90% calcite recovery. The specific capacity determined with the 1 m2 pilot plant unit was approximately 30 t/m2h. Simultaneously the consumption of chemicals was significantly lower than for conventional flotation."

The east span of the 3.5 km long SF-Oakland Bay Bridge is supported by different types of foundations along its span. Starting from the west, its first 460 m section comprising twin concrete box-girders is supported by sands and rock on Yerba Buena Island. A 620 m long steel suspension span then bridges a 25 m deep channel that is formed in sediments overlying rock. Twin concrete box girder structures, each 2.4 km long, complete the stretch over the remainder of San Francisco Bay to the engineered earth fill landing at its east end. For most of its length, the Skyway bridges water 3 to 10 m deep over soft surficial Young Bay Mud. The foundation types include spread footings with hold-downs, steel and concrete piles that are set in drilled rock sockets up to 3 m in diameter and 2.5 m diameter steel tubular piles driven to penetrations of up to 100 m. The design and construction-related considerations are presented. The different foundation types, influences of the site geology and earthquake demands on the substructures are discussed. The seismic motions of the bridge superstructures and substructures, as well as the depth-varying soil motions, influenced the foundation design. Together with performance-based design criteria, including post-earthquake footing displacement limits, these seismic demands influenced various aspects of the foundation design, including the use of battered and vertical piles.

Underground mining operations tend to have higher operating costs than surface mines. When metal prices decrease, profitability is jeopardized due to the high costs. Therefore, mining management harnesses new practices that increase operational efficiency. One way to manage this challenge is to invest in new mine planning practices. Stope layout optimization as a part of underground mine planning aims to identify a portion of the orebody in the form of production volumes (stopes) to maximize profit under roadway and stope dimension constraints. In this paper we propose a novel approach based on identifying ore-rich areas of the deposit and prioritizing their extraction through an iterative heuristic clustering approach. The proposed approach is compared with and validated by an exact method through a small mining example. The heuristics produced nearly identical results in a very short time. Finally, a case study was carried out using a larger data-set. The cluster-based iterative approach generated nearoptimal stope layouts in a computationally effective manner.

Undoubtedly other members have given their lives in the Service of the United States and the Allies during the past four years, but the following biographical notices are all that have reached us as yet. Lewis Newton Bailey Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., Apr. 30, 1918, at the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers, and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character. Mr. Bailey was born at San Diego, Cal., May 28,1884, and graduated from the University of California, College of Mines, in 1906. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1916. During 1904 he was employed at the cyanide plant of the Buckeye mines, Forest Hills, Cal. In the autumn of 1909 he went to the Coeur d&apos;Alene District, Idaho, and was first employed on construction work of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co&apos;., with a short intermission at the Hercules mill, after which. he was sampler and assayer for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. until May, 1910, when he was obliged to return to California to attend to family interests. Returning to the Coeur d&apos;Alene district in November, 1911, he was given charge of remodelling and operating the mill of the Coeur d&apos;Alene Development Co., treating the output of the Ontario mine; this work he performed with credit and complete success. In December, 1914, he returned to the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., as assistant metallurgist and mill superintendent, his work consisting mainly in the testing and improvement of concentrator practice, which he continued with great credit until August, 1915, when family considerations required that he again return to the home of his parents at San Diego. Mr. Bailey was characterized by energy, both physical and mental, by devotion to his friends, associates and employer. He was particularly successful in his relations with the men under him and, in fact, was thoroughly well likcd by everybody with whom he came in contact.

The Roof Control Division of MSHA&apos;s Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center has been conducting a program to evaluate methods employed by the U.S. coal mining industry during recovery of longwall faces. The objective of this effort is to provide information on safe and efficient roof control methods currently being used to recover longwall faces. In addition to a literature review and extensive contacts with MSHA and industry personnel, 14 mines were visited to observe firsthand various aspects of longwall recovery. It is hoped that the dissemination of this information will aid in the prevention of accidents and a reduction in costly downtime during recovery.

Although much has been said about the high cost of exploration, both at home and overseas, little of a specific nature has been published on actual finding costs, if indeed such data has been developed. This contrasts sharply with our sister industry, petroleum, where finding costs for oil and gas are available for virtually any country In the world. The reason is largely attributable to the genetic complexity of the hard minerals, as opposed to petroleum, and the increasing difficulties we are facing in the search for new orebodies. We have available to us data on the annual exploration budgets of most of the major mining companies which show them to run into the tens of millions of dollars. My co-panelist, Dr. Walthier, Director - Corporation Exploration, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, New York, NY, summed up the feelings of many explorationists in a recent keynote address when he stated, "I would not recommend a mineral exploration program of a general nature in North America budgeted at less than three to four million dollars annually, spread over four to five years -- or smaller amounts for more years". We have the fact that many of the major companies now prefer to "buy into" a new mineral discovery, particularly overseas, because of the high-risk and high-cost of exploration. Is there, then, a place for the small investor, let us say with a budget of under $200,000 per year and, if so, where and how? This paper is directed toward the above question and is based on experience gained while managing a limited international exploration program, on a shoestring, over the past three years.
