"The ongoing expansion of the Oak Creek Power Plant in Oak Creek, Wisc., includes a tunnel bored in rock that connects to four vertical intake shafts approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore in Lake Michigan. In 2004, Case Foundation Company was awarded a lump sum contract to install these intake shafts. In spite of delays that shortened the May to September construction season by up to 50%, four shafts and liner assemblies were drilled in 2005 and 2006. The shafts were connected to the tunnel in 2007 by mining upward to reach the lower portion of each liner and then removing its internal bulkheads so that lake water fl owed into the tunnel. The project is one of the largest private construction projects ever undertaken in Wisconsin. The expansion adds 1,230 megawatts of generation. In addition to the tunnel and offshore work, there will be 16 miles (26 km) of railroad track and 6 million cubic yards (4,600,000 m3) of earth work. The 27 ft (8.2 m) diameter tunnel, drilled some 150 ft (46 m) below the surface of Lake Michigan, originates onshore at a pump house. A structural slurry wall was constructed as the foundation for the pump house. The tunnel passes to the south near the current water intake before bearing east toward the new offshore intake shafts, which are 12 ft (3.6 m) diameter by 108 ft (33 m) long steel liner assemblies. These were grouted in place from approximately 3 ft (1 m) above the crown of the intake tunnel and then to 20 ft (6 m) below the lake bottom.Site GeologyOffshore. The plant site is north of the Racine-Milwaukee county line in an area affected by glacial activity. The soil conditions encountered at each shaft location were consistent, with noticeable variations occurring in the top of rock elevations that sloped downward from the innermost to the outermost shaft."

Thermal plasmas are interesting for a wide range of metallurgical and chemical processing applications. The 300 kW experimental reactor PRESS, which has been in use since 1987, is operated in the transferred arc mode with three or one plasma torches . Tests include remelting of silicon fines and production of ultrafine silica. Work on a novel three stage process for production of silicon metal is under way. A 1:1 model of the plasma reactor is used to measure the wall heat flux distribution calorimetrically. The cold walls of this model are divided into several water-cooled sections. The same plasma torches as in the real hot-wall reactor are used. In parallel to the experiments and calorimetric measurements theoretical work is done on numerical modelling of one and three transferred arcs. A modified version of the flow simulation program FLUENT from Creare Ltd. is used.

The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the unfractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

THE Institute assembled in Packer Hall of the Lehigh University, the President, Mr. David Thomas, of Catasauqua in the chair. Professor Henry Coppée, President of the Lehigh University, made an address of welcome to the Institute, and placed at its disposal a convenient hall for purposes of meeting. Mr. Thomas tendered his resignation as President of the Institute, as advancing years prevented him from actively participating in its meetings. The Institute declined to accept the resignation, and, on the assurance that active duties would not be expected of him, Mr. Thomas was induced to withdraw it. Invitations were received from Mr. B. C. Webster, President of the Lehigh Zinc Company, to visit the mines and works of the company; from Mr. Charles Brodhead, to visit the Chapman Slate Quarries; and from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, to visit their works at Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk and the Nesquehoning Tunnel. The Council reported the names of persons already elected in the two classes of members and associates. The following resolutions were passed : Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall take into consideration the printing and publishing of papers originating with the Institute, and that a uniform system as regards size and execution be adopted. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs. R. W. Raymond, E. B. Coxe, and the Secretary. Resolved, That the Council design and prepare a seal for the Institute at the earliest practicable time. "INTRODUCTION Wright Engineers Limited is active and has extensive experience in the design of pressure oxidation plants for the treatment of refractory gold ore and concentrate. In addition to the Mercur oxidation facility, similar projects undertaken during the last few years include the 3000 ton per day acid oxidation plant for the Getchell Mine, Nevada, a concentrate treatment autoclave for Asamera in 1984 and a feasibility study of a 50-tons per day autoclave plant for Consolidated Professor's Duport property in Ontario. The Equity Silver antimony and arsenic precipitation autoclaves, and the low pressure autoclaves at Key Lake Uranium in Northern Saskatchewan were also engineered by Wright in recent years.In August 1986, Wright was retained by Barrick Resources (U.S.A.) Inc. to add a 750 tpd pressure oxidation circuit to the existing mill at their Mercur Gold Mine, Utah. This paper describes this facility and outlines the start up in the spring of 1988 and subsequent successful operation. MERCUR OPERATION The Barrick Mercur Gold Mine is located at the south end of the Oquirrh Mountains in Tooele County, Utah. The carbon-in-leach (CIL) process plant camnenced operation in 1983 with a design throughput of 3000 tpd and has since been expanded to handle rrore than 5000 tpd. 'IWo ore types are mined, an oxide ore and a refractory ore, which is by Barrick's definition ""an ore from which less than 60% gold extraction is achieved by a standard CIL amenability test."" Typical of many sulphidic/carbonaceous ores, the refractory gold does not respond well to the cyanidation process. As a result, refractory ore has been stockpiled since the start of mining. As of June 1987, Mercur had about 570,000 tons of refractory ore stockpiled and 5.7 million tons of proven and probable reserves, grading 0.06 oz/t including approximately 3.5 million tons of tailings from the previous operation grading 0.55 oz/t. In 1986, Barrick decided to build a 750 ton per day pressure oxidation plant to process these ores. The process, for which a patent was granted, comprises pressure oxidation of the sulphides in an alkaline environment. It was developed in 1981 but was set aside in preference of a CIL plant treating only oxide ores by the previous owner of the property, Getty Oil. This process is capable of increasing gold recovery from the refractory ore from as low as 35% by conventional CIL processing to more than 85%. In 1986 Wright Engineers was engaged to undertake a feasibility study based on batch testing. This lead to a decision by Barrick Mercur later that year to build the commercial pressure oxidation plant. Wright was awarded the contract for engineering, procurement, construction managernent and commissioning in March 1987. The plant was mechanically complete in January 28, 1988, and was in operation by February 1988."

Coal production in the United States in 2007 totaled 1.03 Gt (1,145.6 million st), according to preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Ta-ble 1). This is a decrease of 1.5 percent, or 15.6 Mt (17.2 million st) from the 2006 record level of 1.05 Gt (1,162.7 million st). Although coal production declined in 2007, U.S. total coal consumption increased for the year. Coal consumption in 2007 in the electric power sector was higher by 1.9 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 1.1 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 5 percent. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2007, while coal imports remained at about the same level. Total coal stocks increased slightly during the year, as some consumers continued to rebuild their stockpiles that had been seriously depleted in 2005 due to transportation issues. The growth in coal consumption during the year was primarily a result of the weather-related increases in the demand for electricity in 2007. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers) in the United States grew in 2007. Coal-based generation also increased, resulting in a 17.9-Mt (19.8-million-st) increase in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the nonelectricity sector decreased by 3.8 percent to 74.7 Mt (82.4 million st). In the international markets in 2007, U.S. coal exports increased to levels not seen in recent years while coal imports were mostly static. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.7 Mt (59.2 million st), an increase of 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st) above 2006. Coal imports in 2007 ended the year at 32.9 Mt (36.3 million st), 91 kt (100,000 st) higher than in 2006. Coal prices in 2007 were split, with most domestic prices higher for the year while the international prices were overall lower. Some years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.' The life of dies was considered in relation to. the casting temperature, the material used for the die and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mechanism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines. Importance of Heat Checking Heat checks in steel are the source of trouble in many industries besides that of die casting. Every shop where metals are subjected to hot working is searching for improvement and hoping for a cure. The development of a material of sufficient strength to be used as a die and yet devoid of the property of heat checking would be a godsend to many shops and many industries. The need for thorough study and research on the subject is evidenced by the wide variety of hot-working die steels on the market. It is peculiar, but true, that in practically every case the maker of the steel can give concrete evidence to prove his contention that his type of hot-working die steel is as good as or better than any other. A number of steel companies have several hot-working die steels from which choice can be made to fit a particular set of requirements. Possibly to expect one material to be universally the best hot-working die steel is unreasonable. In some hot-working operations, as in drop forging, the die must have great toughness to withstand the stresses developed; in other operations, as in hot piercing or punching, resistance to erosion at high temperatures, possibly defined as strength and hardness at elevated temperatures, is required. In still others, as in die casting, only sufficient hardness to resist scoring between moving surfaces is required, whereas the resistance to sudden changes in temperature must be at a maximum.

"The recovery of gold by leaching is influenced by the size of the gold carrier particles and the chemical environment. Using the relationships between the leaching rate, infinite recovery and particle size for a given set of chemical conditions, it is possible to simulate gold recovery for various feed size distributions. However the use of these particle size relationships is only valid if the leaching of gold from a given size class is independent of the production history of this size class. For instance, to use these relationships it is necessary to verify that gold recovery from the leaching of the 200-270 mesh size class remains the same if the size fraction is taken from a coarse or finely ground ore sample. Several laboratory tests were carried out to answer that question. Results of the tests show that within the large error margin associated to gold content measurements, the history of the production of a size class does not affect the gold leaching from that size class. Emphasis of the discussion is put on the difficulty associated with the processing of data containing significant measurement errors as it is the case for gold assays of leaching tests.INTRODUCTIONMore than 75% of the gold produced in the world is extracted by cyanide leaching of gold ores. The ore is ground to expose the gold carriers and the ground material is reacted in an oxygenated cyanide solution that dissolves gold, leaving solids gangue minerals that are disposed to tailings ponds or returned in underground mines as paste fill. The gold contained in the solution is recovered by either the carbon in pulp process or by cementation onto zinc powder, before being melted and casted into a brick (Marsden and House, 2006)."

Meramec Mining Company is a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. which mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge Mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the orebody was mineable, Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production commenced in April 1964. The orebody is overlain by about 1300 feet of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 150 foot intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the orebody on 190 foot centers. Banks of scopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modified shrinkage stoping method. This was done by undercutting a 40 foot wide by 150 foot long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 5 foot intervals. A 65 foot still was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fingers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a ?lattice? of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar recovery program was necessary.

Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

The roasting is the key step for the extraction of vanadium from vanadium slag by calcification roasting–acid leaching process. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis and kinetic study of vanadium slag in the presence of calcium oxide was investigated. The maximum oxidation degree was slightly increased by increasing temperature from 700 to 900 °C then almost unchanged further increasing temperature to 1000 °C. The reaction mechanism was analyzed through both Sharp method and ln-ln method. Results showed that the mechanism the reaction in the a range of 0.1–0.8 corresponded to the random nucleation and subsequent growth, as represented as (G( a)=[ −ln(1−a)] 1/3 = kt. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 3.5 kJ/mol according to Arrhenius equation.

Investigations were undertaken to assess the suitability of CSIROflotation methods for improving the efficiency of separation of heavyminerals in the monazite circuit at the Westralian Sands Limitedoperations at Capel, Western Australia. Flotation work was conducted on two plant samples. The first was a high-titanium product containing considerable amounts of zircon and silica as quartz and aluminosilicates, and the second was a low monazite/zircon material containing high levels of silica. A three-stage process including reverse flotation was developed totreat the first sample. In this process monazite, zircon, quartz, andaluminosilicates were selectively concentrated by flotation and screening to produce a titanium-rich product. In the first stage, an acid amine float, monazite, zircon, and some non-zircon silica were recovered and in the second stage, an alkaline amine float using a fluoride activator, more quartz and staurolite were floated. The titanium minerals were thus concentrated in the unfloated fraction. In the third stage, the titanium-rich flotation tail was screened at 250 ¦m to remove the remaining coarse aluminosilicates. In a single pass, the three-stage process yielded a TiO2 recovery of 64.0 per cent with the titanium-rich product assaying 70.3 per cent TiO2.

"A performance opportunity was identified for the Raglan concentrator operation by changing the selection of xanthate from Potassium Amyl Xanthate (PAX) to Potassium Isobutyl Xanthate (PIBX). This opportunity was identified by a Statistical Benchmark Survey of the operation and QEMSCAN measurement of these survey samples, in which fine liberated pentlandite was found in the final tailings. This was confirmed by some laboratory scale flotation testwork using High- Confidence Flotation Testing. A statistically designed plant trial was implemented in 2007 to measure and confirm the performance gain. This trial design used on-off switching following a three-month reference distribution of normal operations using PAX. This layout provided both external and internal reference distributions on PAX to be established. These were used to evaluate the internal reference distributions on PIBX. This trial format was deliberately designed so as to block out the effects of autocorrelation in the operations data. In this way, small but significant metal recovery gains may be measured and proven in a plant trial. The paper describes the case study to show that this approach successfully blocks out autocorrelation in time, which is an obstacle in analysing concentrator operations data. The results showed that the PIBX had produced clear and statistically significant recovery gains for Ni, Cu, Pt and Pd. Adjusted for feed and concentrate grades, these recovery gains were: Ni: 1.00, Cu: 0.96, Pt: 5.07 and Pd: 1.90%.INTRODUCTIONConcentrator OperationsMilling and flotation, sometimes accompanied by gravity separation, are well-established unit processes. These have traditionally been used to treat ore that has been mined, producing a lowbulk concentrate containing a high percentage of the paymetal(s) in the ore mined. These concentrates are more economically treated in subsequent beneficiation processes than the ore from which they were produced.This choice of a concentration process results in a significant and variable paymetal loss to the concentrator tailing. This tailing is discarded and disposed of in an impoundment area, and has no immediate business use. This paymetal loss forms the largest loss of paymetal in the entire flowsheet by which refined, or saleable, metal(s) are produced [Cramer, 2001]. The question arises as to whether any particular concentrator is performing at its full potential, and how this answer may be determined. In a concentrator operation, there is always an ongoing performance improvement programme for this reason."

A Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA) was developed in Australia after a series of mine disasters in the 1990?s. A MHRA is used to help prevent major hazards, i.e. fire, explosion, wind-blast, outbursts, spontaneous combustion, roof instability and chemical and hazardous substances, from injuring miners. A MHRA is a structured process that identifies the characteristics of major hazards, assesses and ranks the risk they present, and evaluates engineering and administrative controls to mitigate them. These controls typically consists of a broad spectrum of prevention, monitoring, first response, and emergency response techniques and helps to move an operation from a reactive to a proactive approach towards safety. This paper documents a MHRA performed at an underground mine where strata instabilities and fire hazards may threaten the condition of its escapeways. The objective of this MHRA is to 1) identify what hazards could affect the egress through the mine?s escapeways, 2) determine what unwanted events pose the greatest threat for the mine, and 3) recommend a plan to prevent or recover from the potential disruption of egress through the escapeway. The plan provides information on the key existing controls that should be monitored and audited, and makes recommendation of new potential controls to further reduce related risks. By documenting the use of MHRA to this specific ground control issue, this paper provides a framework for others to judge the merits of this approach and to help design and perform these activities.

The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

Hitachi Refinery of Nippon Mining & Metals Co., Ltd. installed a reverberatory type recycling fumace in 1978 in order to treat the industrial wastes which contain metal elements such as copper, gold and silver. Pyrite and industrial waste materials such as galvanizing sludge, hydroxide slime and dust are smelted. Sulfidized copper, iron and precious metals are transformed into matte and other metallic elements are oxidized into slag This copper matte is transported to Saganoseki smelter and copper and precious metals in the matte are recovered. Recently it is difficult to obtain pyrite economically because of the decrease of pyrite production. Therefore, a new treating process of the liquid waste has been investigated at Hitachi Refinery. In this process, the sulfide or sulfate from the liquid waste are smelted as a source of sulfur.

El presente texto señala los mitos desarrollados sobre la cabecera de las cuencas andinas peruanas a partir de los yacimientos minerales situados en el Perú. En este sentido, dichos yacimientos no son el origen de las aguas y por ello, no se les puede declarar zonas intangibles en las que no se otorga ningún derecho para su uso, disposición y vertimiento de agua. Para ello, se revisa el origen de las aguas de escorrentia superficial, evolución de precipitaciones con altitud, las precipitaciones en la vertiente del Pacífico Peruano, del Amazonas y en el contexto global peruano.

Since the introduction of "boxhole" drilling in South Africa in 1973, the concept of a blind raise, drilled upward from below, has become an accepted mining practice. A combination machine, capable of constructing raises to a mining level below, or blind raising upward from a single setup position adds a further dimension in versatility. A machine with these dual operating modes was designated by The Robbins Company as the 53R and was introduced into the Western Deep Level Mines, South Africa in 1984. The unit is powerful (200 hp) and compact (18,000 lbs., in a 10 ft x 4 ft 5 inch x 4 ft 6 inch package). This paper describes the design considerations for the new machine, provides field data from early trials, and looks briefly at its overall market and potential.
