"Abstract New semi-empirical design procedures for the determination of ultimate shaft friction and load-displacement response of axially loaded piles in clay are proposed. Hereunder also prediction of how the capacity will build up with time following the pile installation, primarily as result of reconsolidation. A main basis for developing the new procedures was detailed review and re-assessment of results from a series pile load test programs published over the past 30 years on piles well instrumented to monitor soil- and pore pressures as well as load distribution along the pile shafts. Two new alternative procedures are proposed for predicting the ultimate shaft friction; a-approach using the normalised undrained strength based on direct simple shear tests as a main correlation parameter, and ß-approach using the overconsolidation ratio, OCR. Both approaches include the effects of the plasticity index of the clay, Ip, which is shown to have an especially large impact on the correlations when Ip<25. It is recommended to use both methods in design practice, and select design values for the ultimate shaft friction that represents an average for the two methods. Pile diameter, length or stiffness, or whether the pile is open- or closed-ended seem to have little impact on the shaft friction. However, a moderate effect of pile length or flexibility on the total ultimate pile capacity comes out of the proposed t-z curves, which include some post-peak reduction. The proposed procedure for predicting the time for set-up is based on linear radial consolidation theory. The main input parameters are the insitu permeability and virgin modulus number (or virgin compression index) of the undisturbed clay. The same basic formula and correlations are applicable to both open and closed-ended or partially plugging piles.IntroductionThe design procedures presented herein are primarily based on observations and data collected in connection with “fully instrumented” pile testing programs that the author has been responsible for or has become involved with over the past 40 years, or that have been found in the literature.It was a pre-requisite for the test programs included that there were sufficient high quality soil data available to give a reliable determination of the true in-situ strength and compressibility characteristics of the clay deposits. The soil conditions range from soft NC clays with undrained shear strength down to about 15 kPa, to very stiff clays with undrained shear strength up to about 500 kPa and OCR up to 25. The plasticity index of the clays mostly lies in range 12 to 60 %."

Heavy minerals have been mined from the sands of the United States’ Atlantic Coastal Plain since the early part of the twentieth century. Production of ilmenite from beach sands near Mineral City (Ponte Vedra), Florida, began in 1916. The first reported large-scale recovery of zircon in Florida was reported from this deposit in 1922 and of rutile in 1925. These operations ceased in 1929. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site. In 1942 heavy-mineral operations were established on 202 hectares of land situated in Duval County, Florida. The location is about 16 kilometers east of the center of Jacksonville, Florida, in an area known as Arlington. This operation demonstrated that low-grade sand containing only 2 to 3 percent titanium minerals could be concentrated economically with the Humphreys spiral and that the oxides could be separated from the heavy silicates by electrostatic methods. Much of this area is now covered by a large mall and is a major retail- commercial center. Between 1958 and 1964 the Skinner tract, a deposit about 4 kilometers south of the above deposit, was mined. Today the area of this deposit is known as Deerwood, a gated country club community on the southside of Jacksonville. Further inland, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. has been mining heavy minerals from a physiographic feature known as Trail Ridge since 1948, and a deposit near Green Cove Springs, Florida has been in production since 1972. Since the start of heavy-mineral mining in the southeastern United States, nine heavy-mineral ore bodies either have been or are being exploited in Florida and Georgia. Other deposits either have been lost to mining or are yet to be mined. These deposits have different origins. Some formed along shorelines at the heights of marine transgressions while others formed on regressional beach ridge plains during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions. These different origins are reflected in the chemical and physical characteristics of the deposits. Ilmenite in older, more western deposits has a higher TiO2 content than ilmenite in younger, more eastern deposits. TiO2 content does not very with north-south direction. Garnet and epidote are absent or rare in the older Trail Ridge deposits, but progressively become common in the younger Duval Upland, Crestal Pamlico, and Holocene deposits. Grain size is coarsest for Trail Ridge sediments and finest for sediments in Duval Upland and Crestal Pamlico deposits. The average grain size for Holocene deposits is intermediate between Trail Ridge and Duval Upland deposits. The two models for the origin of the heavy-mineral deposits – deposits formed at the height of major marine transgression; and deposits formed during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions that occur during a general marine regression; - are consistent with known sedimentological data and depositional trends.

A series of pile load tests (maintained load tests, constant rate of penetration tests at different rates, and statnamic tests) was carried out on an instrumented model pile installed in clay beds prepared by consolidation of a slurry in a calibration chamber. The total load, shaft resistance and end bearing during the pile load tests were investigated. Following this, alternative methods of deriving the static load-settlement curve from a Statnamic test in clay taking into account damping effects have been proposed. These methods have then been used to interpret a statnamic test on a full size instrumented pile installed in a stiff glacial till.

The Bakal (South Ural, Russia) deposit of iron ore bearing iron carbonate (siderite) with the capacity of more than 1 billion tones belongs to the MMK. This ore cannot be fully processed via blast furnace technology because of high content of MgO. According to the investigations carried out in the USA and Japan in 1999-2004 the ITmk3 (Ironmaking Technology mark three) RHF technology is a breakthrough in Ironmaking. Four iron ore types (hematite, magnetite, high and low Al2O3/SiO2) were tested. Reduction, melting and slag removal can be achieved in just 10 min. The main objective of the investigation is to establish optimum operation conditions for the production of iron nuggets from iron carbonate bearing ore via the ITmk3 by means of the lab scale testing. Samples of iron ore and carbon reductant were chemically and physically analyzed. Green pellets were processed via a lab tube furnace to simulate RHF conditions. The nuggets and slag were chemically analyzed. This preliminary test work provides valuable information which may be used for large-scale testing in a commercially sized RHF.

"The Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik region has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,200,000 tonnes per year due to an Optimization Project (FAG to SAG conversion) in 2005 and many recent processimprovements.In 2006, the Raglan Metallurgical Group with assistance from the Xstrata Process Support group decided to make SAG control one of its priorities in order to further increase throughput and improve stability. The original primary mill control logic delivered by the Optimisation Project in 2005 consisted of a simple PID loop controlling the mill charge (bearing pressure) through feed rate changes. Due to the multivariable, non-linear and disturbance dominated nature of the SAG circuit it was quickly found that this traditional PID control strategy was not able to adequately control the mill; resulting in poor stability, frequent operator interventions and less than optimum performance.This paper describes the successful integration of advanced field systems such as mill feed image analysis (Wipfrag) and crusher gap controller (ASRi), into a multi-variable fuzzy logic SAG mill controller. The process of how a strategy for control was developed and implemented directly in the existing control system (exploiting standard system capabilities) is discussed. It is also shown how this approach has provided mill automation which is simple, robust (despite erratic feed characteristics), and delivers both an increase in throughput and a reduction of variability.INTRODUCTIONOriginally commissioned as a Fully Autogenous Grinding (FAG) circuit in 1997, preparations to convert the Katinniq Concentrator Mill to SAG had in fact commenced as early as 1999, but were halted owing to alternative process improvements which achieved up to 1Mtpa as early as 2000. As a result of past developments, mainly at universities, the coal industry has had access for a decade or more to a number of computer programs for coal mine planning. Using some of these programs Bethlehem Steel&apos;s Research Department in 1969 launched jointly with Bethlehem Mines Corporation an extensive research and development program aimed at: (1) testing the capabilities of these programs through trial applications as the need and opportunity existed, (2) defining what additional capabilities were required to make mine planning computer systems fully useful in the hands of Bethlehem&apos;s mine-planning engineers in the field, and (3) developing and implementing in the field the mine-planning systems agreed on. This program is now nearing completion, and several of Bethlehem&apos;s operations routinely use the planning tools that were developed. The progress of this research program is discussed in terms of our initial trial applications of computer methods to mine planning and the incorporation of several innovative features into our new set of computer programs, in particular, the use of time sharing, data base management systems, and general-purpose simulation languages.

Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

In the estimation of reserves the known values of the variables of interest from surrounding drill holes are used to compute or estimate the unknown value of the orebody over a given region or at a given point of interest. The classical means of doing this are: 1. The Polygonal Method û where the region is divided into polygons centred on bore holes, each variable is then assumed to have constant value over each polygon. 2. Inverse distance methods, where the variable is assumed to vary linearly with the distance between the known values of the drill holes. 3. Inverse distance squared method û a quadratic variation is assumed for the variables between the bore holes.

"Gas dispersion in flotation defines the efficiency of the process once the chemistry has been established. There are three measurements, superficial gas velocity, gas holdup, and bubble size, which along with the derived quantity bubble surface area flux, are used to define “gas dispersion.” Sensors for measuring gas dispersion in industrial machines have been developed. This communication describes the working principle of the techniques and illustrates their potential to detect problems and to improve the operation of individual cells, banks and circuits. IntroductionFlotation is the most widely used process to separate minerals and is finding increasing application in other chemical and environmental fields. The process exploits natural and induced hydrophobicity to collect selected particles on the surface of a bubble. Once the process chemistry to control hydrophobicity has been established, the efficiency depends on dispersion of air to generate the necessary bubble surface area. Bubble surface area flux, Sb, the interfacial area generated per unit time and unit area of the machine, is emerging as one of the most useful variables to quantify gas dispersion (Gorain et al., 1997, 1998) although not without its critics (Heiskenan et al., 2001).For a bubble population of mean size db at a superficial gas velocity (or rate) Jg, the bubble surface area flux can be derived from geometric considerations (Finch et al., 1999):"

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2005 was an estimated 760 kt (838,000 st), valued at $44 million free-on-board plant. This was below the 2004 volume and was the second year of decline in a row. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar. Shipments of glass containers were about the same as in 2004. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continued to increase, taking the place of U.S.-produced goods and the feldspar required to make them. For 2005, 80 percent of the ceramic tiles sold and 50 percent of the plumbing fixtures sold in the United States were imported. Since 2000, manufacturing plant closures in the plumbing fixtures industry have reduced the demand for feldspar and feldspar-silica mixtures by 100 kt (110,000 st). Increased demand from the ceramic tile industry has partially offset the lost volume.

The area discussed in this report comprises a group of 38 counties lying in the northeast corner of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It includes two major oil fields, Van and East Texas; two major gas fields, Bethany and Waskom; and a number of fields, both oil and gas, of lesser importance. All commercial oil production comes from beds of Upper Cretaceous age and almost exclusively from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both Upper and Lower Cretaceous beds with the newer production from the older beds. East Texas Field This field continued as in 1932 and 1933 to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. This paper briefly describes the excavation procedure of a powerhouse, comprising of its incremental excavation, reinforcement measures, and the installed monitoring system. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase. A finite element model was generated of a Søderberg electrode in a ferromanganese smelter. In this model, the casing and fins were modelled explicitly, and temperature-dependent material properties were included. A two-stage analysis procedure was used, the first part being a coupled thermal-electrical analysis using an applied DC current. As the casing material was non-magnetic, the DC current was deemed sufficiently accurate for this initial analysis. The proximity effect was not considered. Thermal boundary conditions based on assumed temperature distributions in the furnace were applied. Calculated temperatures agreed well with measured values. The joule heat calculated in this step was applied as a load to a coupled thermalstress analysis. The model was applied to a comparative study of alternative materials for the casing and fins. A number of different combinations of materials for the casing and fins were evaluated in a comparative study. The position of the baking zone was used as the criterion for evaluating the potential of each material combination. Based on this analysis, some material combinations were discarded as being entirely unsuitable, whilst the two most suitable combinations will be tested experimentally in the furnace. The stress analysis was performed on the most suitable option. The practical advantage of this analysis was that a number of what-if scenarios could be evaluated and discarded prior to embarking on expensive experimental work, thus limiting the amount of experimental effort required. A mathematical model allows for the comparison of options under controlled conditions, where parameters of interest can be varied individually, with all other parameters remaining the same, a condition which is difficult to achieve in an operating furnace.

The 16th annual Mining Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin with a reception and open house at 5:30p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The six inductees include James M. Gerstley, the only living member, and George O. Argall, Jr.; John F. “Leadville Johnny” Campion; Charles R. Nailler; Edwin N. Pennebaker and Russell L. Wood.

This paper summarises the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a rib support design methodology and software tool that could be utilised by suitably qualified colliery staff. The project was primarily funded by Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and further supported by several Australian longwall operations. The outcome of the project is a design methodology and software tool called, Analysis and Design of Rib Support (ADRS). ADRS is an empirical technique, which recognises that several geotechnical and design factors affect ribline performance and in addition that operational and safety issues essentially dictate the level of performance required. Therefore, the design recommendations associated with ADRS are specific to the Australian coal industry; however the procedure(s) for data collection and analysis could be applied to other countries&apos; &apos;underground coal industries. Case history data were compiled from 34 longwall and two bord and pillar operations resulting in 204 case histories with each case history data set being defined by approximately 130 individual data fields. In addition monitoring (incorporating stress cells and extensometers) was undertaken at 10 collieries to assess and quantify the effectiveness of different rib support patterns and hardware on rib performance. The monitoring sites allowed for an improved understanding of the mechanisms of rib failure and degradation in terms of its interaction with the installed support and at the various stages of the mining cycle. The design methodology deals with both mains development and gateroad development specific to Australian longwall mines. This paper focuses on longwall gateroads subjected to abutment loading and in particular the travel road which becomes the tailgate of the subsequent panel. The statistical analyses associated with these cases suggested that the level of rib support should be based primarily on the development height and the pillar stress level. The ADRS software guides users through the design process, allowing them to develop rib support plans based on sound science and a broad base of in-mine experience To the best of the authors’ knowledge ADRS is the first systematic rib support design technique to be developed for any country’s underground coal industry. The development and use of empirical models in mining have substantially contributed to improving safety and productivity. ADRS further demonstrates that empirical techniques are particularly relevant and beneficial in dealing with the complexities of geotechnical design associated with underground coal mining.

Despite extensive research efforts conducted in the past decades, occupational health risks associated with exposure to nano and ultrafine aerosols emitted by diesel power equipment are still not completely understood. The complexity of physical and chemical properties of diesel aerosols, constantly changing with the implementation of advanced diesel emissions control technologies, make this task rather challenging. The objective of this paper is to identify and characterize nanometer and ultrafine aerosols emitted by diesel engines in the underground environment and evaluate the effects of selected contemporary control technologies on physical properties, chemical composition, and in-vitro toxicology of diesel aerosols. The physical and chemical properties of the nanometer and ultrafine diesel aerosols are to be characterized through a test series in the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine. The crucial part of the study has been development of a facility that allows researchers to generate field results with precision and accuracy characteristics of a laboratory environment. The knowledge obtained from this study should strengthen our understanding of the health implications related to exposure to diesel particulate matter and aid in assessing the potential of various control technologies for reducing this exposure.

"The results of preliminary work on the modeling and measurement of the heat transfer coefficients of metal/mold interfaces is reported. The system investigated is the casting of uranium in graphite molds. The motivation for the work is primarily to improve the accuracy of process modeling of prototype mold designs at the Los Alamos Foundry. The evolution in design of a suitable mold for unidirectional solidification is described, illustrating the value of simulating mold designs prior to use. Experiment indicated a heat transfer coefficient of 2 kW/m /K both with and without superheat. It was possible to distinguish between solidification due to the mold and that due to radiative heat loss. This permitted an experimental estimate of the emissivity, ~ = 0.2, of the solidified metal.IntroductionA feature that distinguishes casting processes from welding processes is the presence of an interface with a low heat transfer coefficient between the mold and the casting. Especially when chill casting, the interface delays the start of solidification and increases freezing times significantly. By comparison welds can be assumed to have a very high heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient controls such phenomena as folds and laps on the surface of castings which can be crucial to the acceptability of a casting. The time delay for the start of solidification influences the occurrence of cold shut defects. The standard mold material for uranium casting is high quality graphite which is an excellent refractory when used in vacuum and coated with a refractory wash. Graphite is an effective chill material and has a thermal diffusivity approximately twice that of uranium. Experience has shown that practicable superheat without mold pre-heat is not sufficient for avoiding cold shut defects when casting in graphite molds.TheoryIt is possible to calculate the position of the freeze front s, as a function of time, t, the superheat and interface heat transfer coefficient, h, [1]. However, the value of h cannot be obtained explicitly. The Virtual Adjunct Method (VAM) [2] offers a method for extending the standard equation for an insulating mold where s is proportional to the square root of time.
