New Zealand has an established history of gold production beginning with the gold rushes of the 19th century in the Coromandel, Nelson/Marlborough, West Coast and Otago regions. Despite this, the number of significant modern hard rock gold operations has been limited in recent years due to a lack of sustained exploration capital and not limited geological prospectivity.The New Zealand Government is actively encouraging explorers to invest in New Zealand through a series of targeted promotional visits, more importantly through the acquisition of precompetitive regional geophysical data. Data collection has been completed over the prospective Northland epithermal district and a large portion of the South IslandÆs west coast that is prospective for both orogenic gold and intrusive related gold.Analysis of new data has been an important component in aiding the generation of exploration targets from prospectivity modelling. Determining the prospectivity of an area involves reviewing all the available data and analysing it with respect to the most up-to-date mineral system model for the mineralisation style of interest. Using the weights of evidence modelling approach, the most prospective areas for epithermal gold-silver, orogenic gold and intrusion-related gold have been identified. The key exploration parameters relevant to each mineral system are first represented spatially and then statistically combined into a single prospectivity map. New potentially economic deposits could be found by focusing exploration on targets identified from these models. "During the last eight years there has been a noticeable increase in the use of permissible equipment in gassy and dusty coal mines. This trend has undoubtedly been toward greater safety in mining, but in spite of this all is not well ""along the front.""In many mines those in charge, either through ignorance or supposed economy, have neglected to install sufficient copper and maintain good bonding on the rails used for return circuits to have a safe working voltage for the permissible equipment which is intended to afford them safety.Low voltage, when properly analyzed, is not economy but frequently is an expensive oversight. Burned-out armatures, controllers, rheostats, and switches are costly in themselves to repair or replace, but the greatest cost in many instances is the loss of production resulting from idle and broken-down equipment.From a safety standpoint, excessive low voltage where permissible equipment is necessary is almost criminal negligence. A burn-out of any kind is liable to cause an arc that may burn its way through a casing wall and bring about a hazardous condition if gas or dust in explosive proportions should be present. Again, all wiring, both interior and exterior to the apparatus, is subject to the extra heating consequent upon low voltage. It should be remembered that if the voltage drops the current must increase a corresponding amount in order that the same work may be accomplished; and as the heating effect is as the square of the current, an enormous overheating of the electrical parts and wiring often takes place. This heating effect is especially detrimental to trailing cables used on portable equipment, because under the most favorable conditions the size of cable selected is only barely sufficient to do its work properly at a safe working temperature; therefore, when the extra current load is added because of poor voltage, overheating is sure to result, with consequent deterioration of the insulation, This effect greatly increases the liability of cable failures in service, and in turn adds to the hazards incident to the use of portable equipment of the permissible type involving the use of trailing cables.Some manufacturers have tried -to protect their equipment from low voltage, especially below a certain point, by -installing low-voltage relays which will trip when the voltage falls to a predetermined value. It is understood that some operators have hesitated or refused to install such low-voltage protection because they were aware that the voltage conditions were so poor that the equipment could not operate under the safe limits set. It is difficult to understand how any progressive company that is willing to go to the ex-pense of installing permissible equipment could be so shortsighted in this phase of common sense, safety, and economy."

Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview and details of good practice, from a United Kingdom perspective, in the development and implementation of major tunnel and underground infrastructure projects. In doing so, it draws on a broad base of project management theory. A central theme is that successful project delivery is dependent on detailed planning of the complete project delivery process, forming an effective team that works well together and the proper management of risk. The role of partnering in forming a strong project coalition is described. Particular emphasis is given to the integration of design and construction, and the role of the designer throughout the construction phase. The implementation of risk management in the design and construction of tunnel works is discussed, and recommendations are made on how risk, value and constructability can be integrated in project delivery. Recent practice in project procurement, particularly in the use of innovative collaborative forms of contract are described, and details of particular provisions for joint management of risk and problem resolution are provided. Finally, the relevance of the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works to good practice in project delivery is highlighted throughout the paper.

A novel process is developed in this study for separation of tungsten and vanadium from a leach solution of tungsten alloy scraps. Specifically, a magnesium salt combined ammonium solution is employed to precipitate vanadium and impurities in the purification of the leach solution. This separates vanadium from tungsten by rejecting tungsten in aqueous solution. Finally, tungsten is recovered as the form of ammonium para-tungstate (APT). Vanadium is recovered as the form of ammonium meta-vanadate(AMV).

"The cyclone would have a claim to be the commonest, least understood and most abused piece of mineral processing equipment available for study by researchers. It has certainly generated its fair share of publications – 1,000 in the last 60 years would be a fair estimate. However this remarkable degree of interest and scale of investigation is not reflected in our understanding of how they work; cyclones are still installed inappropriately and run poorly, which suggests that there are still things to learn about this deceptively simple process.In mineral processing there are two broad classes of cyclone: the hydrocyclone, used in classification, thickening and dewatering, and the dense medium cyclone, used for concentration by density. Although rarely studied together, the laws of physics presumably apply equally to both and so it seems that there would be interesting things to learn by considering them as a single class of device. The good news is that in recent years there have been spectacular advances in the computational and measurement tools available to study these devices, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), tomography, and laser doppler anemometry (LDA), and some good progress has been made in an understanding of the fundamental principles involved.The JKMRC has made many experimental studies of hydrocyclones and DM cyclones, leading to useful empirical models. However some recent CFD and tomographic work, in association with work of other institutions, has thrown important light on the workings of these processes. Progress has also been made in novel designs of cyclone to achieve improved separating efficiency, based on an attack on the subprocesses believed to contribute to inefficient operation. This paper describes the work to date.Modelling of the dense medium and classifying cyclone was conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Three phase simulations of the dense medium application (air/water/medium) showed appropriate medium segregation effects but over-predicted the level of segregation compared to segregation measured by gamma-ray tomography. This is believed to be because the basic Algebraic Slip mixture model in Fluent does not model any back-mixing of the dispersed phase due to turbulence."

"To remain competitive in an open market, mining companies are more and more requested to optimise their complex and highly multivariate processes. The increasing amount of process data, brought about by intensive use of instrumentation and the progress in computer data acquisition, enhances the need for more and more powerful and robust tools for the analysis and modelling of the process data. Now, with the emergence of multivariate data analysis (MDA) techniques, on-line clustering of mineral process behaviour is possible and could help in the extraction of valuable process operation indicators. MDA can be used in different mineral processes such as flotation, grinding, smelting etc. In this paper, the focus will be on grinding process as it is the one of the most costly node in the mineral processing scheme (i.e. power consuming) and it is a highly multivariable process. Particularly for primary grinding mills (SAG/AG), more instrumentation outputs and more powerful and significant process indicators are needed for efficient control and optimisation.MDA is a novel approach suitable for understanding mineral process behaviour compared to the traditionally approaches based on empirical and phenomenological modelling. Multivariate techniques can be used for several purposes. In this paper, the following objectives will be addressed:operation diagnosis: Shift differentiation and operation test differentiation can be showed by using MDA tools such as principle component analysis and factorial discriminant analysis.operation performance monitoring: operation regimes can be evaluated by clustering based on an economic criterion performance such as costs, tonnage, product quality, profit, etcIdentification of operation behaviour (monitoring) and selection of drift correction trajectories (control):MDA can be used to identify periods of unusual or abnormal process behaviour and to diagnose, if it is possible, causes for such behavior."

The influence of microwave energy at high electric field strength on ore strength has been investigated. Two ores of varying mineralogy were treated in both multimode and single mode microwave cavities. After treatment, any change in strength relative to untreated ore was established. It was shown that in the multimode cavity reduction in strength was related to the applied power level. Results of tests carried out in the single mode cavities showed that, for both ores, reductions in ore strength > 50% could be achieved in very short periods (<1 second). Thermal stress analysis showed that the mechanism of microwave induced failure was the development of tangential stresses at the grain boundaries. It was concluded that operation at 915 MHz with high power and short residence times gives feasible scale-up possibilities.

São apresentados e discutidos os resultados da caracterização de concretos nanoestruturados do sistema Al2O3-SiC-C para canal de corrida. Foram avaliadas três composições, denominadas A, B e C, ligadas por sílica coloidal. Os corpos de prova para determinação das propriedades físicas e químicas foram moldados em escala laboratorial com auxílio de forma metálica. O concreto A foi desenvolvido por um fabricante nacional. O concreto B é o concreto A modificado, ou seja, contém uma fase extra. O ajuste da composição A visou adequar as propriedades desse concreto às variáveis de processos da Usiminas. Os resultados de testes laboratoriais indicaram que o concreto modificado (B) apresentou desempenho compatível ao do concreto C, tradicionalmente utilizado na Usiminas. As principais vantagens dessa geração de concretos ligados por sílica coloidal são bombeamento estável e reduzido tempo de secagem.

This paper provides an utierstanding of the betivior and potenttil damage of homes resulting from sag-type mine subsidence. This is done with extemive research of numerom case histories in Illinois collected by the authors. The howe response to substience-itiuced ground displacements are summarized and evaluuted. A damage level criteriu, specifically developed for residenttil structures, is presented based primarily on repair costs. Damage levels and the associated subsidence profile characteristics for each case history are compared.

"The most widely used method for predicting the onset of continuous caving is Laubscher’s caving chart. A detailed examination of this method was undertaken which concluded that it had limitations which may impact on results, particularly when dealing with stronger rock masses that are outside current experience. These limitations relate to inadequate guidelines for adjustment factors to rock mass rating (RMR), concerns about the position on the chart of critical case history data, undocumented changes to the method and an inadequate number of data points to be confident of stability boundaries.A review was undertaken on the application and reliability of a numerical method of assessing cavability. The review highlighted a number of issues, which at this stage, make numerical continuum methods problematic for predicting cavability. This is in particular reference to sensitivity to input parameters that are difficult to determine accurately and mesh dependency.An extended version of the Mathews method for open stope design was developed as an alternative method of predicting the onset of continuous caving. A number of caving case histories were collected and analyzed and a caving boundary delineated statistically on the Mathews stability graph. The definition of the caving boundary was aided by the existence of a large and wide-ranging stability database from non-caving mines. A caving rate model was extrapolated from the extended Mathews stability graph but could only be partially validated due to a lack of reliable data."

The rock mass properties such as deformability and permeability are highly dependent on the existence of cracks. The Ratio of Crack Opening Dependency (RCOD) was proposed as a new index to evaluate the deformability of infinite jointed rock mass. The RCOD is defined as the ratio of total amount of crack opening and the total deformation of jointed rock mass. The theoretical relation between the RCOD and the effective compliance of jointed rock mass is discussed and confirmed through two-dimensional numerical analysis by the SC-DDM, together with the applicability to the rock engineering. Les propriétés de masse rocheuse telles que la déformabilité et la perméabilité sont très dépendantes de l&apos;existence de fissures. Le rapport de dépendance d&apos;ouverture des fissures a été proposé comme un nouvel index d&apos;évaluation de la déformabilité de masse rocheuse à assemblage infini. Le rapport de dépendance d&apos;ouverture des fissures est défini comme étant le pourcentage de quantité totale d&apos;ouverture des fissures et de déformation totale de la masse rocheuse assemblée. Der RCOD wird als Verhältnis der Gesamtmenge der Rissöffnungen und der Gesamtverformung der zerklüfteten Felsmasse definiert. Die theoretische Beziehung zwischen RCOD und der effektiven Verformbarkeit von zerklüfteter Felsmasse wird diskutiert und durch zweidimensionale numerische Analyse mit SC-DDM bestätigt, zusammen mit der Anwendbarkeit auf Bergbautechnik.

"A great deal of effort has been expended in the last 11 years by the authors and others to identify the correct power required to grind ore in a SAG mill, by developing ore hardness variability functions for the ore body to be mined. This paper describes the next step in the SAG design process, which is choosing a SAG mill to accomplish the required specified design performance.At the test work stage, each ore hardness data point is a unique and discreet bit of information that represents the energy required to grind the ore represented by that sample at optimum SAG conditions. When the design criteria are set, it is now considered necessary that the required power draw in the mill chosen be provided at optimum conditions as well.Based on actual 3-ft diameter pilot plant results, we can now show that the grinding efficiency and throughput drop when the optimum load limit is exceeded. Future work is expected to show a similar reduction in efficiency when exceeding optimum speed. Providing specified power by exceeding these optimum conditions is not adequate and leads to a lower cost but underperforming SAG mill.It is possible in some cases to modify a SAG circuit to force it to perform better, but this often takes time, much effort and costly modifications. In most cases the capital spent on a properly sized SAG mill may prevent production losses that would be many times greater over the extended start up period. This is the direct result of choosing the proper SAG mill at the start.INTRODUCTIONThe sequential steps required for the design of any grinding circuit, have changed dramatically in the last seven years. Previously, it was considered necessary to do six foot diameter SAG mill pilot plant tests on representative samples of minus six inch ore (F80), in order to understand design requirements. It can now be shown that this method is costly and not likely to produce the desired result because it is difficult to recover six-inch material from deep within a new mine. The representative nature of the sample is often compromised when the sample is selected."

The competitive pressure, the increasing energy costs and the environmental regulations impose substantial challenges to the definition of power plants serving industrial facilities. Primary mining and metallurgical facilities have even greater challenges because they are often located remotely, where the fuel supply can be a problem. The absence of a power grid imposes challenges on the reliability and quality of the electrical energy supply. In addition, the facilities usually require thermal energy too, not only electricity. This paper outlines these types of issues that have to be considered when defining a cogeneration plant integrated with a remote located industrial facility. It is addressed to the ?users? of cogeneration facilities rather than to ?generators.? The focus is on analyzing various site-specific design considerations to pre-screen the feasible cogeneration alternatives and minimize the number of options to be analyzed from the economics viewpoint. This approach could substantially reduce the engineering effort and schedule during the feasibility phase of the project. Part 1 of this paper (Berkley, 2003) provides a basic understanding of cogeneration plants of various types to establish a common language. Part 2 outlines and analyzes specific issues that could be of help in the definition of cogeneration installations for remotely located industrial facilities, with a focus on mining and primary metallurgical plants.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology&apos;s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. Inflation has received much attention due to its effect on capital budgeting, associated cost overruns, and declining real profits. This study focuses on the effects of inflation on the evaluation of a mining investment and the estimation of a mining project&apos;s revenues. The study indicates that the best method for estimating future returns is the fore- cast dollar scheme. In this scheme, the metal price was held constant, and the operating costs were "inflated" along a historical regression line. The conclusion was reached by comparing the "actual" performance of a 3000 tpd (tonnes per day) lead mine model with &apos;its estimated performance during four time periods (1950-1960, 1955-1965, 1960-1970, 1965-1975). The individual data files for each time period and estimating method (6 files by 4 time periods) were pro- cessed by a suite of cash flow computational and investment analysis sub- routines. The analysis presumed that the mine was part of a large corporation which could utilize the expensed, development and exploration costs and any investment tax credits, in the year that they were incurred.

India is a large and growth market for explosives and accessories, which has dramatically changed from complete import dependence to self sufficiency, and now has an exportable surplus. The largest single user is coal mining which is continuing to show a healthy growth with opencast mining becoming increasingly dominant. The explosives industry has kept pace with mining and today all the well renowned explosives technologies of the world are available in the country. While slurry explosives are popular in large diameter, NG based explosives continue to be preferrred in small diameter usage. Emulsion explosives have had a good market response. ANFO usage is limited due to local reasons. As the mine size is increasing, the demand for bulk-on-site explosives is growing. Prices of explosives and accessories are cheap compared to international levels. The user industry is mainly Government owned mines whose profitability is not satisfactory. Explosives industry is over licensed in terms of manufacturing capacity, which is likely to put pressure on the viability of some of the explosives manufacturing units. Scope exists for optimization of blasting parameters through the use of computerized blasting models. The explosives industry is faced with new challenges and opportunities.
