The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

VARIABLES OF composition and environment affecting storage stability of gasoline-type fuels were studied, utilizing radioactive tracers and other analytical techniques. Changes in gasoline composition brought about by aging were determined and correlated with gum formation. The amounts of reaction of selected gasoline components, measured by radioactive tracers, were determined in a gasoline-type blend and in a mixture of 17 selected pure gasoline components. The data show that sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, polycyclics, and olefins enter into gum-forming reactions. Certain sulfur and nitrogen compounds were found to be most reactive in the gum-forming process. Results of this study indicate that the aromatic constituents of gasolines may contribute substantially and directly to gum formation. A mixture of tetralin and indan-type compounds is reactive, and this mixture appears to be the main aromatic portion entering into gum formation. A secondary but significant amount of naphthalenes also appears to have reacted in the gum-forming process. Analyses of the sulfm compounds in a fresh and an aged fuel indicated that elemental sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, thiols, sulfides, and disulfides were depleted during aging, but thiophenes and residual sulfur compounds were not depleted by fuel deterioration.

Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. If the total volume of a diffusion couple changes during the diffusion, the measurement of distance becomes ambiguous. Use of distance parameters as suggested by Hartley and Crank is discussed. For small concentration differences, the standard form of Fick's second law is retained with conventional length units and the in- terdiffusion coefficient D. It is shown how D can be calculated from experiments involving large concentration differences and analyzed in terms of distance parameters. 'The merits of incremental diffusion couples involving small concentration differences are emphasized. THE conventional form of Fick's second law for one-dimensional diffusion of component B in a binary solution of A and B is where c, is the concentration of component B; x, the distance; t, the time; and D, the interdiffusion coefficient which may depend on ca. Hartley and Crank' have pointed out that Eq. 1 applies only if the total volume of the diffusion couple does not change during the diffusion process; otherwise, the definition of x becomes ambiguous. No change in total volume takes place if the specific volume of the solution is a linear function of the weight fraction Wb, or if the molar volume is a linear function of the mol fraction N. In some alloys, however, these relationships do not hold, and then it is necessary to introduce a modified measure of distance, 4 in order to retain the general form of Eq. 1. The application of Hartley and Crank's suggestions to diffusion in alloys has been discussed by Wagner.' During the time period from 1990-2007, 1601 reportable fires occurred in the U.S. mining industry (an average of 89 fires per year). The leading causes of U.S. mine fires were flame cutting and welding operations, frictional heating and ignitions, electrical shorts, mobile equipment malfunctions, and spontaneous combustion. The fact that mine fires continue to occur with an alarming regularity reinforces the importance of recognizing and eliminating the potential hazards and the overall need for improved fire control and suppression technology to ensure the best possible outcome during a mine fire. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting an evolving comprehensive program of research that is addressing mine fire prevention, detection, management and suppression. This paper presents a summary of recent research accomplishments and provides an overview of the next phase of the NIOSH mine fire research program.

Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

Room-and-pillar mining is a mining method used in the United States to extract coal from underground, and pillar recovery is widely practiced for maximizing coal recovery and mining economics. Under certain conditions, room-and-pillar mining can create high stresses in coal pillars resulting in a coal outburst. These outbursts represent one of the more severe safety hazards in underground coal mines, potentially causing injuries and fatalities. Over the past ten years, coal outbursts have resulted in three fatalities in U.S. room-and-pillar mines. Though coal outbursts generally occur under deep cover, they are more likely to occur during pillar recovery and under multiple-seam mining conditions. Coal outbursts are generally associated with strong roof and floor and heavy loading of coal pillars, but it is difficult to predict whether, where, and when they will occur. In this respect, risk management provides a proactive tool to prevent coal outbursts in room-and-pillar mining by identifying mining areas with high risk of outburst and mitigating the risk accordingly.

"The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

In connection with tin strategic minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey under authority of the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., 1st sess.) a study is being made of tin deposits in the United States in an effort to improve the situation with respect to domestic supplies. These studies include sampling and exploration of some of the larger deposits with the objective of establishing emergency reserves, if possible to do so. Two exploration projects have been completed, and the over-all results obtained are set forth in this progress report. RESOURCES Tin was first discovered on this continent in 100 in the Temescal Mountains of what is now southern California. In the ensuing century, occurrences of tin have been reported in no less than 17 States and Alaska. Although most of these are of scientific interest only, tin-bearing veins and placers in California, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Virginia, South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico, and Alaska have been extensively explored, and largo sums of money have been expended in recurring attempts to exploit them.

During the year of 1972 ASARCO's Silver Bell embarked upon a project that would test a modified grinding circuit using direct digital compute against the performance of its other five grinding lines, implementation and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pitts, et al. The main purpose of the present paper will be to describe major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines and their solutions. Also included will be a discussion of changes made in operating philosophy and methods used since that report was written. Description The Silver Bell concentrator is a 10,436 tonne/day copper sulfide plant supplied by ore from two separate open pits approximately 4 km. apart. As well as receiving ore from these two main pits, ore is received from several exten¬sions of both pits. The ore bodies are variable in rock type and the extensions have increased this variability. Grinding is carried out by six primary, single-stage, 3.20M x 3.66M Allis Chalmers grate discharge ball mills in closed circuit with four Krebs D20B cyclones (Fig. 1). Each of these grinding circuits is controlled by four independent but interactive control elements. These control elements are the fresh ore feed, the water added to the feed end of the mill, the water added to the ball mill discharge sump, and the cyclone feed pump speed. At the present time, instrumentation for measuring primary process variables consists of Merrick weightometers for fresh ore feed, orifice plates coupled with differential pressure transmitters (dp's) for incoming water measurements, back-pressure diaphragm coupled with a dp for estimating ball mill discharge sump level, a magnetic flowmeter for determining cyclone feed velocity and a nuclear density gauge for measuring cyclone feed density. All measuring instruments develop electrical signals that are measured as 2-10 V DC "inputs o the computer interface.

Rising energy demand and steadily decreasing quality of raw materials due to the global resource depletion are great challenges to the steel production today. The FINEX® Process has been developed jointly by POSCO, Korea and PRIMETALS Technologies Austria, to provide the iron making sector with the capability to lower hot metal production costs, environmental pollutions and to increase the flexibility in terms of operation and the choice of raw materials. FINEX® is a new technology combining a gas-based reduction in a series of fluidized bed reactors and a reduction smelting in a melter gasifier. Commenced in April 2007, the first 1.5Mtpa commercial plant has demonstrated the competiveness as an alternative iron making route. Another 2.0 Mtpa, third generation FINEX® (3G) plant was recently installed at POSCO, Pohang Works and has been operating satisfactorily since its blow-in in January 2014. Based on the well-proven plant concept, new process features, the highly competitive production costs and environmental advantages, the FINEX® Process can be considered as a competitive alternative to the conventional blast furnace iron making route.

IN the classical paper1 of Mehl and Rhines entitled "The Rates of Diffusion in the Alpha Solid Solutions of Copper", the authors state: "It has been mathematically demonstrated that the treatment of the data as though the diffusion were taking place between two flat plates instead of radially in a cylinder has no appreciable effect upon the results. Were the bars of a much smaller diameter, a modification of the analytical treatment would have been required." Unfortunately, the errors in the reported concentrations are much too large to neglect, as shown in the results below. A planar treatment of diffusion data assumes that the reference planes separated by a nominal distance (AX) have identical areas. An adjustment must be made on the concentration data should the successive diffusion planes differ in area. The Mehl-Rhines' diffusion samples were cylindrical with copper electroplated onto copper-based alloys. Successive surface areas through which diffusion occurs are in the ratio ri/r1, where ri is the radial distance between the center of the sample and the center of the i th shell to which the host (alloy) atoms diffuse, and r1 is the radial distance between the center of the sample and the center of the innermost (i = 1) experimentally reported shell from which the alloy atoms diffuse. Hence, ri/r1 (i = 1, ..., n layers) is a dimensionless correction factor to be multiplied by the reported concentration data before planar-data analysis is attempted. In the forty-seven samples reported, the original interface between the copper alloys and the electroplated copper was located at a mean distance of 8.255 mm from the center of the samples. The successive layers, machined off the samples, were approximately 0.0762 mm thick. The distance (xi) at which concentration (ci) was reported was always a distance measured with respect to the original interface, that is, with respect to the fixed distance of 8.255 mm. Hence, the as yet undiscovered Kirkendall Effect was precompensated. The values of ri and r1 are therefore given by ri = 8.255 + xi and Y, = 8.255 + x,. The illustrative table below lists the position xi (mm), ri (mm), the value of ri/r1, the reported concentration (ci) in weight percent (only valid for radial analysis of data), and the corrected concentration [c'i = (ri/r1)ci] in weight percent (only valid for planar analysis of data). Similar tables can be constructed for the remaining forty-six samples. The corrected data can be used to re-evaluate the diffusion coefficients for the reported systems.

SUMMARY The discussion focusses on developments in the debt/equity swap market since the Marte project was negotiated in early 1988. It emphasises carrying forward the recent market trends to anticipate the breadth and scope of debt/equity conversions for mine development in the 1990s. Secondary market prices of LDC paper, conversion values and political influences in the host countries and the use of near debt and commodity-based instruments as components of mine financing in debt/equity deals will be placed in the perspective of recent trends and expectations for the future. THE MARTE PROJECT The Marte mine is a gold porphyry deposit in Chile's high Atacama, for which financing was put together at the beginning of 1988. The Marte project was financed by a combination of common equity and loans. It was unusual that the equity infusions were made under different programs. Some of the international equity was infused with fresh funds via DL 600. Other common foreign equity was provided through the conversion of Chilean bank debt under Chapter XIX. On the loan side,. export credits for the import component of machinery and equipment were sought. Local bank financing was negotiated for the remainder of ' the project's anticipated cost. The debt conversion market in Chile was at its apex in terms of interest, activity and government support when the mine financing was arranged. The price of Chilean paper in the secondary market hovered about 62 to 66 cents per U.S. dollar of face value. Meanwhile, the Chilean government was negotiating conversion redemptions significantly closer to full face value. The government differentiated between debt paper exchanged for corporate investors who had sourced that paper in the secondary market, and debt paper held by bank investors who would incur a transaction loss in the conversion. The use of a combined DL 600lChapter XIX equity financing created different yield calculation bases for the various investors. Chapter XIX prevents remittance of profits before year 5 and capital repatriation before year 11. Investors choosing this vehicle have either for a corporate policy in the target project not to declare dividends until repatriation is allowed, or they have to seek uses for the peso liquidity that would be generated through dividend declarations in the early years. However, DL 600 investors face no such waiting period on dividends, nor do they have restrictions imposed on cashing out of the investment before the 11th year. Therefore, any equity structure with components of both investment mechanisms will have inherent differences in cost basis and future income flows for the various participants. This equity imbalance is defensible if the investment motivations of the parties are analyzed: a mining investor using fresh funds looks for a hurdle return on equity calculated at conservative commodity prices, with as much flexibility to reap upside benefits as possible; a mining investor choosing to invest through a debt conversion mechanism will realize a modest short term gain on the conversion, reducing his effective cost basis, but sacrificing some return because of the waiting period on repatriation of dividends. INVESTMENT OBJECTIVES A bank investor exchanging his own paper for an equity participation in a mining project realizes a conversion loss on the transaction. He seeks a risk adjusted acceptable hurdle rate of return to recoup that loss over time. Motivation for the bank investor to take that loss may be derived partly from a strategy to diversify its existing portfolio by internal policy and externally regulated guidelines. The bank will compare yields on its loan portfolio to that country with anticipated dividend flows discounted back at a risk adjusted rate. The mineral value in the ores from the Mother Lode mining districts of California is almost entirely gold, Although many mines have produced extremely high-grade ore the usual mill grade averages approximately $7.00 gold per ton. Fully 80 per cent of the gold has been and is now being recovered by amalgamation. Various methods have been introduced to recover the gold that was not obtained by the amalgamation processes. They include vari¬ous kinds of gravity concentration which in some cases were followed by chlorination or cyanidation. The usual practice includes only stamp battery, plate-amalgamation, and vanner concentration. In the very early practice the tails were run to waste through the main drainage streams of the different mining districts. During later years very large storage dumps have been impounded. These old tails, together with those being saved from present mills, furnish the problem discussed in this article. The clean sand portion of these mill tails is amenable to the usual cyanidation. The slime portion contains the major amount of the gold lost, but it also contains 1-1/2 to 3 per cent carbon, which precludes direct cyanidation of this part of these low-grade waste tails. The black carbonaceous slime portion is the particular problem considered in this report.

The Group Equivalent Pile (GEP) approach was proposed by researchers to analyze a laterally loaded pile group. This approach enables engineers to evaluate the behavior of a pile group in single pile analysis software, such as LPILE. A previous study showed that the calculated results using the GEP approach for piles agreed well with field test data. To evaluate the accuracy of the GEP method for analyzing laterally loaded shafts, two case studies with different shaft diameters were performed in this study. The comparisons showed that the calculated results using the GEP method and considering the contribution of the shaft cap if embedded generally agreed with the measured from the full-scale tests.
