THE formation and growth of intermetallic phase layers is of considerable practical importance to metallurgists interested in diffusion bonding and cementation processes and has been the subject of extensive qualitative investigation. In contrast, it is somewhat surprising that so little quantitative data have been amassed. The need for additional fundamental work was pointed out by Mehl in 1936,' and persists to a large extent to the present day. The early studies have been reviewed by Rhines,2 and his conclusions have been summarized by Lustman and Mehl3 substantially as follows: 1) All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two metals; however, in some cases, certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. 2) The isothermal growth of intermetallic phases generally obeys a simple parabolic equation of the form X2 = Kt, where x is the thickness of the alloy layer, K the temperature dependent reaction rate constant, and t the time. 3) The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae -Q/RT , where k is the parabolic rate constant, A, a temperature independent constant, Q the heat of activation for the process, R the gas constant, and T the absolute temperature. Subsequently, Lustman and Mehl made a quantitative study of the laws of growth in intermediate layers in a number of binary systems, in which one of the components was either zinc or cadmium, and the other component was one of the following: nickel, copper, silver, cobalt, gold, iron, or Monel metal; the interdiffusion times used were for the most part less than 24 hr. It was found that the simple parabolic law was not obeyed in general, but that a generalized parabolic law of the form xn = kt was valid, where n was a temperature dependent constant; also,

Discussion of the paper of BENJAMIN F. TILLSON, presented at the NEW York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 505 to 528. T. E. STURTEVANT, * New York, N. Y.-Mr. Tillson's paper on hammer drills is of much interest to me. Early in 1909 I was invited to make tests of our drills at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. The first drill that we tested gave very poor results. This was a drill having a hammer piston 1¾ in. in diameter and 3 ¼ -in. stroke, the hammer piston weighing about 6 1b., the 1 ¾ in. diameter being exposed to pressure at either end. Although this drill has given excellent results as a sinking drill, its performance as a stoping drill was poor. This was one of the surprises of the limestone as spoken of by Mr. Tillson. This led me to further investigation, and a second drill was developed, with a much lighter piston and a somewhat longer stroke, that gave better results. In the design of this drill, no attention was paid to the cost of construction, our whole attention being given to the increase in drilling speed and reduction of the quantity of air used. The first drill of this type had a piston weighing about 2 ½ lb. and a stroke of 3 ¼ in. The piston was made with a hammer-bar extension, and the cylinder was made with two diameters of the bore, one in which the hammer-bar extension moved and the larger one in which the piston head moved. While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. A Large Earth Cum Rock Fill, ECRF Dam is under construction at Polavaram in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India as part of an irrigation project. The Embankment crest width of the dam is 12.5m and base width is of approximately 136.75m with a stepped sloping height of 27m on both upstream/downstream sides. Once the 1.2m Thick Plastic concrete cut-off wall is constructed below the dam along the longitudinal central axis to avoid seepage, this magnificent structure will be supported on a series of Deep Mixing Columns and Stone Columns that are evenly arranged under the footprint of ECRF Dam forming a smooth transition of gradually reducing stiffness moduli of treated ground from the center of the embankment, where the foundation stresses are high, towards the edges in order to be able to progressively limit the settlements under the dam to a specified allowable limit. As such the required post treatment stiffness in case of stone columns is 2 times of the in-situ stiffness of foundation soil, whereas it is expected to be 5 times improvement for Deep Mixing as per project specifications. Laboratory testing and Field Trials undertaken successfully to verify the design.

B RITISH COLUMBIA in its mining activities is going ahead by leaps and bounds both in development and production. Mineral production for 1925 was $61,492,242 in value as compared to $48,704,- 604 in 1924, or an increase of about 26.2 per cent. This is a new record. It is the first time in the history of mining in British Columbia that we have gone over the fifty million mark. But we have got in the habit of making new records. The year 1924, with its mineral production of almost forty-nine million was a new record. And I am confident that when the mining history of 1926 is written it will be found that we have established yet another new record and that we can report another 25 per cent increase over 1925. What is the explanation? It is not only that the world is settling down, and settling up, after the war. It is not only that in the rebuilding, the refashioning in which all nations are busily engaged, the metals that come from our mines are needed. More than anything else, at least as far as we are concerned, it is because British Columbia has the resources and the fact that the province has been fortunate in recent years in finding men with the enterprise and the vision required to push ahead the labor of their development. From the ranks of our own people in Canada we have prospectors who have faith, energy and requisite knowledge. They are combing our hills season after season and they are of the type of manhood that does not know the meaning of the word quit. More and more these men are learning the importance of the guidance furnished by geological reports, and to an ever increasing extent such reports, thanks to the valuable work of the Canadian Geological Survey, covering areas little known to man, are made available to them-but it is recognized that in the opening up of our Province, containing within itself 372,000 square miles, it is essential that we should have the cooperation of our cousins on this side of the line as well as of our fellow citizens of the Dominion and of the Mother Country.

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual's carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man's best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don't need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping. The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

Amostras de aço inoxidável UNSS31803 duplex foram nitretadas sob plasma em atmosfera gasosa de 75% de nitrogênio e 25% de hidrogênio em temperatura de 400°C durante 20 horas. A microestrutura do material como recebido apresentava cordões de ferrita e austenita, alinhados no sentido da laminação, com aproximadamente 50% de cada uma das fases. A caracterização microestrutural foi feita por microscopia óptica, difração de raios X, MEV e EBSD. As propriedades mecânicas e tribológicas das superfícies tratadas foram avaliadas utilizando ensaios de microdureza e esclerometria linear instrumentada. As camadas obtidas na nitretação a plasma em baixa temperatura (LTPN) eram constituídas por ferrita expandida (aN) e austenita expandida (?N), com durezas de 1509 HV e de 1362 HV, respectivamente. Os ensaios de esclerometria linear mostraram que, num primeiro estágio, o indentador se movimenta sobre a camada nitretada, promovendo deformação plástica nas bordas do sulco, denotando a possibilidade de movimentação de discordância nas fases expandidas da camada nitretada. O coeficiente de atrito medido durante esse estágio ficou estável em torno de 0,05. Ao final do primeiro estágio houve início de formação de microtrincas, aumentando o coeficiente de atrito aparente. A transição para o 2º estágio ocorre com formação de microtrincas cuja densidade aumenta com o aumento da profundidade de risco. Nesse estágio o coeficiente de atrito cresce linearmente com o tempo e profundidade de risco, o número de microtrincas cresce e as microtrincas observadas são predominantemente transgranulares, típicas de falha coesiva da camada. Foram observadas, também, microtrincas intergranulares que causam o destacamento individual de pequenos grãos de ferrita e/ou austenita expandida. No terceiro estágio de riscamento o coeficiente de atrito aparente tende a se estabilizar em torno de 0,16. O ensaio de esclerometria linear realizado no aço como recebido apresenta coeficiente de atrito sempre crescente até atingir um valor em torno de 0,21.

Two numerical methods are presented JOT solving the equations Jor one-dimensional, multiphase /low in porous media. The case oF variable physical properties is included in the Formulation, although gravity and capillarity are ignored. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, resulting in upper and lower bounds for the ratio of time step to mesh spacing. The methods are applied to two- and three-phase waterflooding problems in laboratory-size cores, and resulting saturation and pressure distributions and production histories are presented graphically. Results oJ the tuo-phase flow problem are in agreement with the predictions of the Buckley-Leuerett theory. Several three-phase flow problems are presented which consider variations in the water injection rate and changes in the initial oil-and ujater-saturation distributions. The results are different physically from the two- phase case; however, it is shown that the Buckley-Lez~erett theory can accurately predict fluid interlace velocities and displacing-fluid frontal snturations for three-phase flow, providing the correct assumptions are made. The above solutions are used as a basis JOT et~aluuting the numerical methods with respect to machine time requirements and allowable time step for a fixed mesh spacing. INTRODUCTION Considerable progress has been made in recent years in obtaining numerical solutions of the equations for two-phase flow in porous media. Douglas, Blair and Wagner2and McEwenll present different methods for solving the one-dimensional case for incompressible fluids with capillarity (the former using finite differences, the latter with an approach based upon characteristics). Fayers and Sheldon4 and Hovanesian and Fayers8 have extended these studies to include the effects of gravity. West, Garvin and Sheldon, l4 in a pioneer paper, treat linear and radial systems with both capillarity and gravity and they also include the effects of compressibility. Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford3 consider two-dimensional, two-phase, in compressible flow with gravity and capillarity and Blair and Peaceman1 have extended this method to allow for compressible fluids. No one, however, has examined the case of three-phase flow, even for the relatively simple case of one-dimensional flow of incompressible fluids in the absence of gravity and capillarity. In obtaining a numerical technique for simulating forward in situ combustion laboratory experiments, Gottfried5 has developed a method for solving the one-dimensional, compressible flow equations with any number of flowing phases. Gravity and capillarity are not included in the formulation. The method has been used successfully, however, for two- and three-phase problems in a variable-temperature field with sources and sinks. This paper examines the algorithm of Gottfried more critically. Two numerical methods are presented for solving the one-dimensional, multi-phase flow equations with variable physical properties. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, and are used to simulate two- and three-phase waterflooding problems. The numerical solutions are then taken as a basis for comparing the utility of the methods.

Australian regulatory control of ground vibration and airblast arising from mining, quarrying and civil construction operations is spread across a number of federal, state and local authorities and across a number of departments with various jurisdictions. The Australian Standard AS 2187.2 contains an informative appendix on damage-related criteria and it is the primary reference for the regulators. The complete standard and the informative appendix is currently undergoing major revision with a focus for the latter on implementing frequency-dependent criteria for ground vibration. Certain directions for change have been raised for consideration by the standing committee, ranging from fundamental issues of measurement and interpretation and others that overlap human comfort criteria. It is anticipated that some of the suggestions will eventually make their way into future standards after an adequate period of consultation and consideration by both the Australian public and others involved in the associated industries.

IN 1839,1 Gerard, Troost, the first, State Geologist of Tennessee, reported the occurrence of zinc ores in East Tennessee, in connection with the iron ores at Embreeville; in 1844,2 he refers to the zinc deposits of East Tennessee, especially the apparently rich deposits occurring, in Jefferson and Claiborne Counties, while his ninth annual report is a ,description of the zinc deposits of Jefferson County and a description of the most improved processes by which zinc is extracted from its ores. Although. Tennessee has long known of the occurrence of its zinc deposits and has recognized their value, only during the last few years have these ores been successfully worked. As far as can be learned, prior to the systematic development of the Mascot district in 1911, no large-scale or successful operation of any of the zinc deposits was carried on. But in that year, after several companies had made considerable progress in developing the Mascot area and had proved. a relatively extensive body of low-grade sulfide ore, the American Zinc Co. entered the field. It introduced modern methods of prospecting and mining the ore and from the first was successful. Too great credit cannot be given this company for its pioneer work in a previously unimportant field. Throughout the history of its operations, the American Zinc Co. has confined its efforts to underground mining of the sulfide ore, sphalerite. This company has found that successful results in zinc mining in East Tennessee can be achieved only by expending large sums in prospecting and blocking out bodies of pay ore in sufficient magnitude for large-scale operations. At Mascot are located the mines of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, the mines being situated along the Southern Railway in the Holston River Valley, Knox County, about 13 miles northeast of Knoxville. Considerable mining and prospecting had been done by several companies prior to the acquisition of this property by the, American Zinc Co. Previous to 1900 only open pits, which were worked for oxidized ores, were operated. and the production was small. In 1900 the

The kinetics of dissolution of silver in cyanide solutions under oxygen pressure have been investigated over a wide range of conditions with a view to establishing the reactions involved and the factors which influence the rate. The results indicate that the rate is determined principally by the transport of reactants in solution to the silver surface. The thermodynamic features of the reaction with particular reference to the influence of pH and CN- are also discussed and summarized in the form of potential-pH diagrams. METALLIC silver is readily attacked and dissolved by cyanide solutions in the presence of oxygen. This reaction has long been recognized and extensively applied1 in the well-known cyanide process for the extraction of silver from its ores. While this process has been subjected in the past to a number of investigations2,3 both of a practical and fundamental nature, some features relating to the chemistry of the reactions involved, the role of oxygen, the nature of the rate-controlling step, and the effects of pH and certain reagents such as lime, are still not fully understood. It was felt that this situation justified a further investigation of the reaction, made with a view to obtaining a better understanding of its kinetics and mechanism. In the present investigation rate curves for the dissolution of silver were determined over an extensive range of carefully controlled reaction conditions. By carrying out the reactions in a pressure vessel, the partial pressure of oxygen, and hence its concentration, could be varied widely. The influence on the reaction of other variables including temperature, pH, and the concentrations of cyanide, peroxide, and other salts was also examined. The results of these kinetic studies are presented and discussed in this paper, together with a summary of available thermodynamic information relating to the possible reactions which can accompany the attack on silver by aqueous solutions of cyanide and oxygen. Chemistry and Thermodynamics of the Reaction The chemistry of the reactions of gold and silver with aqueous cyanide solutions has been the subject of several recent reviews.'." It has been proposed' that the following reaction occurs when silver dissolves in cyanide solutions in the presence of oxygen: 4Ag + 8CN- + 0, + 2H.0 -t 4Ag(CN); + 40H- [la] An equation of this form, for the corresponding dissolution of gold, was first suggested by Elsner." Bodlaender5 proposed a similar overall reaction, but suggested that it took place in two steps, 2Ag + 4CN- + O2 + 2H2O ? 2Ag(CN),- + 2OH- + H2O2 [2a] followed by 2Ag + 4CN- + H2O2? 2Ag(CN); + 20H- [3a] On the other hand, Janin- suggested that the dissolution of gold can occur with the liberation of hydrogen, rather than by reduction of oxygen. The corresponding equation for the dissolution of silver is 2Ag + 4CN- + 2H20 -t 2Ag(CN); + 20H + H2 [4a] All these reactions represent oxidation-reduction processes and may be resolved into the corresponding separate oxidation and reduction components. The oxidation step involves the formation of the argentocyanide ion and is the same for all the reactions, i.e., Ag + 2CN? Growth directions of tin, zinc, and cadmiun whisker crystals grown spontaneously fi-om the solid are summarized. In tin the edge and diagonal directions of the unit cell are jound with the exception oj- the [110] diagonal. In cadmiurn and zinc the usual dip-ections are a or a + c. The c direction has not been ohserwed. The gvouth directions from the solid are for the most part the same as those found for vapor-grozun crystals and are the ohserz:ed glide directions in plastic j-lou. Whisker crystals of these elements grown from the solid are not twinned. Specular lateral reflections are associated with planes of snall crystallographic indices. WHISKER crystals of tin, zinc, or cadmium grow spontaneously at room temperature in periods from months to years from thin electroplates and other prepared films of the respective metals.''2 It has been established that these crystals are single, but the question of twinning, such as occurs in whisker crystals of silicon,3'4 has not been resolved. Studies of morphology have been restricted to determinations of growth directions.5-' Whisker crystals are both straight and kinked. A few studies have been made on kinked whiskers including measurements of kink anglesa and determinations of growth directions,' but unfortunately not both on the same crystals. The kink angles, for the most part, for each species are grouped closely about a few unique values, but these values are not always those between observed growth directions in a single crystal. To supplement existing data, the growth directions, identification of lateral features, and presence or absence of twinning were determined with a Weissenberg goniometer by a method described elsewhereg on eight whisker crystals of tin, five of zinc, and five of cadmium. One kinked cadmium whisker was examined in detail. The specimens were needlelike, a few microns in cross section, and of the order of a millimeter in length. They were removed from electroplated substrates on laboratory specimens and commercial equipment after several years of growth as described in Table I. Since the specimens were less than 10 p in cross section they were ideally strong with no attendant risk of plastic deformation or damage in handling. Only deformation twinning has been reported for these elements. Therefore, twinning probably should not be expected in whisker crystals of these metals, particularly a twin plane containing the growth direction. A twin plane oriented in this direction was the one sought in this study. No examination was made for twinning at the boundary between kink segments except for one cadmium crystal. Well-defined reflections occur as a whisker crystal of tin, zinc, or cadmium is rotated about its growth direction when illuminated by a beam of light Although these reflections had been noted in earlier investigations, no study of them was made, probably because the earlier studies had disclosed also that

Since the discovery of the first black smoker on the East Pacific Rise in 1977 (Francheteau, et al., 1979), the hydrothermal vents, now called seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) deposits, have generated great interest in the geological community, especially regarding their formation and composition. SMS deposits are areas of hard substratum, with high base metal and sulphides content, that form through hydrothermal circulation and are commonly found at hydrothermal vent sites. The high base metal (Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb), sulphur-rich mineral content has interested mining companies, due to their potentially high economic value. Currently, the known SMS deposits do not have the same dimensions as the massive sulphides (MS) found on land (covering just 10s to 100s m2) and pose significant mining challenges (being located in water depths between 800 m and 6000 m), meaning that they do not appear to be economically exploitable at present. However, these deep-sea mineral resources could be important targets in the near future, particularly with our ever-increasing demand for base metals. A key aim of the European Union-funded Blue Mining project is to develop techniques to robustly quantify SMS deposits dimensions (both surface expression and subsurface extent) and therefore assessing the suitability of SMS deposits for future economically viable and environmentally clean deep-sea mining operations.

Thermal treatments of five different types of non-ferrous metallurgical wastes, under controlled atmosphere, were carried out at temperatures lower than 800 °C. The aim of these treatments was to reduce the toxic elements content and to increase that of valuable metals in the residue. <Best results were obtained by their treatments in air or hydrogen or successively both of them. Simple treatments using air or hydrogen of three samples allowed the elimination of more than? 95 % of their toxic elements and&apos; almost doubled their valuable metals&apos; concentration. For the rest two samples, combined treatment was necessary for their efficient decontamination and the concentration of valuable metals, in the treatments residue, to a reasonable value. Most of the solids issued from these treatments can be recycled in .the current non-ferrous metallurgical processes.

Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

The Cu content of industrial flash furnace concentrates varies considerably. It is usually around 30% Cu (Tables 2.1, 3.1) but it may be as high as 55% Cu and as low as 20% Cu. The mineralogy of flash furnace concentrates also varies. The most common Cu mineral is chalcopyrite (CuFeSz), but many concentrates contain bornite (CuSFeS4), chalcocite (CU2S), covellite (CuS) and even native copper (CUO). Pyrite (FeSz) :is also present in many concentrates. This chapter examines how concentrate composition affects flash smelting -with specific reference to &apos;low-Cu-grade&apos; FeS2-CuFeSz concentrates. Chapter 14 does the same with &apos;high-Cu-grade&apos; CuzS-CuFeSz?concentrates.

The combined Bootstrap and Capstone deposits, located in the Bootstrap subdistrict (Section 10, T36N, R49E, M.D.B.M., Elko County, Nevada), are approximately 27 miles northwest of Ca-1I: Nevada. The contiguous Bootstrap Capstone deposits are located along the northeastern and northern flanks of Round Mountain, a horst block separated by grabens from the sheep Creek Mountains to the north-northwest and the Tuscarora Mountains to the east. Open-pit-minable gold reserves as of December, 1989, were 13.27 million short tons with an average grade of .057 troy ounces gold per ton and an overall waste-to-ore strip ratio of 2.5:1. Ore zones in Bootstrap are concentrated along north striking high-angle dikes localized along faults, while ore zones at Capstone are strata form and structural, occurring at the Devonian limestone/siliceous sediment interface and in high-angle fault-filling dikes. Pre-ore faulting produced a complex structural setting for Capstone, dominated by strong northwest fault sets cross-cut by northeasterly structures. Alteration associated with both deposits is silicification with a-strong argillic overprint. Dike emplacement, which post-dates silicification, marked the onset of mainstage gold deposition and argillic overprinting of silicified lithologies. Gold displays an affinity for moderately argillized sedimentary and igneous lithologies. Mineralogic and geochemical analyses of rotary percussion drill samples show good correlation between gold, silica, antimony, and arsenic.

Significant lost time delays were experienced by Carbonifera de Nueva Rosita, S.A. de C.V. ("CNR") during mining development of the Pasta de Conchos Mine ("the Mine") near Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico. Furthermore, methane gas concentration in the return air course had exceeded 1.0 percent. Resource Enterprises, Inc. ("REI") was contracted by CNR to recommend an approach to reduce methane emissions at the Mine. In order to recommend a degasification approach, REI and CNR obtained geologic and reservoir characteristics of the Double coal seam, Olmos Formation. A vertical core hole was drilled to obtain core samples to determine gas content (average 8.4 cm3/gm) and to conduct a slug test to estimate permeability (34 md). This information was used to simulate gas productivity and drainage effectiveness. The simulation indicated that underground horizontal boreholes would remove significant quantities of gas in advance of mining in a reasonable period of time. Based on the results of the simulation study, an underground degasification drilling program was initiated at the Mine. In a six month period, five long in-mine degasification boreholes were drilled in advance of CNR&apos;s three to five years mining projections. Peak gas production from the five boreholes (approximately 2,750 cumulative meters) had exceeded 45,000 m3/D. Results to date have indicated a general reduction in methane concentration in the return air course below 0.8 percent.
