The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

The Precious Metals Section is concerned primarily with ore-testing problems associated with precious metals and with the analysis and concentration of a large number of the strategic-mineral samples that have been included in the research program of the Bureau of Mines. During the fiscal year 1938-39, 30 projects were completed. The requests for this service are based upon the desire f the sponsor to obtain the best or most satisfactory method for maximum recovery of the minerals. In many instances it is a question of improving present milling practice, with due regard to utilization of present equipment. In others, the probable tonnage available maybe the deciding factor in the choice of a particular recovery method. Under all circumstances the results of tests axe prepared with the thought of aiding a competent metallurgist, familiar with local conditions, to formulate a practical flow sheet or to assist the mill operator to correct known losses. A microscopic examination for identification of the mineral constituents and their association in each ore is always a big help, in planning the tests and may indicate the reason for former troubles or assist with best procedure.

The development of pelletizing during the last ten years has continued, however, self-fluxing pellets have not been regularly and commercially produced for use in blast furnaces, except as Kobe Steel, Ltd., Japan. This paper tells about unique developments for self-fluxing pellets, and their effects when used in Kobe Steel's No. 3 blast furnace at the Nadahama Works (inner volume 1845 Nm3, hearth diameter 9.5 m)., Several phases of the pelletizing process are discussed individually, and also their relation to performance in blast furnace operation. Special emphasis is placed on proper preparation of the limestone added to the raw materials, and indurating at optimum conditions. Means of improving pellet quality by correct control of size distribution of the raw materials used in pelletizing, and indurating temperatures, are also discussed. As basicity (CaO/SiO2) of pellets increased 0. 1, coke consumption decreased 3. 8 to 4. 2 kg per ton of hot metal, when using 70% pellets in the iron burden.

"The subsolidus phase relations in the Sm2O3-CeO2-CuO ternary system sintered at 1000°C in air have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. The system can be divided into two ternary phase regions and three binary phase regions. Solid solution Sm2-xCexCuO4-y is the only ternary phase in the system. The maximum solid solubility was confirmed to be x = 0.2. The crystal structure, oxygen content and superconductivity of the solid solution Sm2-xCexCuO4-y have been investigated.I. INTRODUCTIONAfter the first discovery of the superconducting ceramic system La-Ba -Cu-O[l] with Tc = 30 to 40K, other families of cuprate-based ceramics have been synthesized with higher critical temperature. These oxides include the R-Ba-Cu-O (R: rare earth) systems (Tc=90K or so)[2,3], the Pb-Sr-(R,Ca)-Cu-O systems (T c = 50 to 100K), the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O systems (Tc=80 to 105K)[4], the T1-Ba-Ca-Cu-O systems (Tc=85 to 125K)[5], the Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O systems (Tc=90 to 150K)[6,7], and some others. The improvement of Tc is very rapid. The measurement of the Hall and Seebeck coefficients shows that they all are p-type superconductors. In 1989, Tokura et al.[8] discovered the superconductors R2_XCexCU04_y(R = Nd, Pr, Sm) with Tc=20 to 24K (onset) and found that the charge carrier is electron in contrast to their hole doped counterparts. This discovery increases the fundamental understanding of the cuprate-based superconductors by comparing their characteristics and mechanisms to those of the p-type superconductors.One of the outstanding features of these n-type superconductors is the difficulty in obtaining samples in good charactors, such as the difficulty in obtaining zero resistivity state in single crystal or bulk samples; the semi-conductivity of bulk samples in ordinary state (opposite to the superconducting state) and a reducing reaction involved before the superconductivity has been found[9]. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the sample preparation of the n-type superconductors. All the n-type superconductors have been found· considerable solid solubility. The compositional variations play a governing role in the carrier doping of the superconducting phases. Also, it is vital to the ceramic processing of superconductors to identify the compatible phases in the phase diagram. Finally, there is always the possibility of finding additional compounds, both superconducting and non-superconducting, in an unexplored system."

Experiments were made in a semicontinuous unit to provide engineering data for designing experimental continuous systems . These systems would be used to study the hydrogasification of hvab coal and char (from lowtemperature carbonization ) to high - Btu gas . In experiments at 800 ° C and with a coal residence time of several seconds , yields of hydrocarbon gases increased from about 2,000 scf / ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 7,000 scf at 1,000 psig . With 15 minutes residence time , yields increased from 8,000 scf/ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 17,500 cubic feet at 1,000 psig . In all cases , small quantities of heavy oils were produced along with the gaseous hydrocarbons . Production of oils could be minimized with a corresponding increase in gaseous hydrocarbons by increasing the retention time of the volatiles within the hot zone . Yields of gaseous hydrocarbons from char were slightly greater than from coal under similar conditions . Although the hydrogasification reaction is very pressure dependent , substantial quantities of coal (40 to 60 percent ) could be reacted to gaseous hydrocarbons at pressures as low as 50 psig provided reaction temperatures were increased to 1,200 ° C. It was also demonstrated that a hvab coal could be hydrogasified continuously without incurring agglomeration . This was achieved by dispersing coal in a relatively large reactor with concurrent flow of hydrogen . At 1,000 psig and 800 ° C , it was possible to react about 35 percent of the coal and to produce a gas containing up to 52 percent methane .

Several fundamental aspects related to the nickel electrowinning from chloride electrolytes have been addressed in this paper. The thermodynamic study includes the activity coefficient of the hydrogen ion and the speciation diagram of NiCI2 solutions. The activity coefficient of the hydrogen ion (YH+) was calculated and estimated experimentally using a combination glass pH electrode. It was found that YH+ was greater than one in concentrated NiCl2 solutions and increased significantly with increasing NiCl2 concentration. The speciation diagram for NiCl2 solutions was plotted with YH+ and the effect of the ionic strength on the equilibrium constants being taken into account. It was discovered that the predominant nickel species in the acidic region were Ni2+ and NiCI+ in 0.937 M NiCl2 solution at 25°C. Electrodeposition tests demonstrated that higher Nit' concentration in the electrolyte improved the current efficiency of nickel electrodeposition (CENi). The additions of H3BO3, and NH4Cl increased very little the current efficiency of nickel electrodeposition at pH 1.5 and temperature 60°C. However, the addition of sulfate decreased the current efficiency of nickel electrodeposition. Nickel electrodeposition was also found to be a steady-state process since the amount of acid added to the electrolyte at a constant pH increased linearly with time during galvanostatic electrodeposition. The cathode surface pH during nickel electrodeposition was measured using a flat-bottom combination glass pH electrode and a 500-mesh gold gauze as cathode. The cathode surface pH was found always to be higher than the pH in the bulk electrolyte, and if the current density was sufficiently large, it would eventually reach a level causing precipitation of insoluble Ni(OH)2(s) on the cathode surface. Rotating disc electrode studies revealed that the rate of nickel electrodeposition was first order with respect to the activity of nickel ion and zero order with respect to the activities of chloride and hydrogen ions. The rate of hydrogen evolution was found to be first order with respect to the activity of hydrogen ion and to be zero order with respect to the activities of nickel and chloride ions. These findings indicate that nickel deposition and hydrogen evolution proceed independently.

AT the Annual Meeting of the A.1.M.E. last February, Cornelius F. Kelley, chairman of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., was presented with the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal for "conspicuous success as administrative head of great enter- prises engaged in the production of nonferrous metals at home and abroad; for inspiring leadership of an organization that has trained able engineers for service wherever ores are mined and metals are recovered; and for enhancing the prestige of metal mining in the financial and industrial world." Mr. Kelley's acceptance speech follows: I am not unmindful of the fact that the distinction is not to be considered a personal one, but that by the language of the citation itself it is rather a recognition of the service that has been performed by the many trained men of an industrial organization that in the arts of mining and metallurgy and in the fabrication of metal products has performed a distinct service to the industry and to mankind. In that spirit, the award is accepted, and on behalf of the organization I represent and myself, I thank you and assure you that the honor is deeply appreciated.

PROBABLY one of the most perplexing problems with which a mill operator contends is the proper evaluation of his mill results. True, he accurately determines his recoveries of metals and grades of products monthly, weekly, and often daily. These figures do not of themselves directly translate to mill economics. When one figure is unusually good there may be an offsetting circumstance. The advantage of high lead or zinc concentrate grade may be offset by poorer recovery; high lead recovery may be offset by poorer zinc recovery, or vice versa; and so on. Besides, grades or recoveries may not of themselves mean more than a reflection of the grade and character of the ore during the period under study. What the operator sorely needs is some one measuring stick that tells him when he has achieved his greatest return, regardless of grades or recoveries-for if he knows his methods and practices are yielding the optimum return he need no longer concern himself with the assays of products and tailings, or the corresponding distribution of metal values. At first blush it would appear that the obvious answer to this is the actual money return to the mill. Paradoxical as it may seem, however, money return does not make a dependable yardstick any more than do grades and recoveries, as ore conditions would vary enough to bring about greater money return during periods when the actual metallurgical work is not as good. The mill operator, of course, should always aim for the greatest return on the ore, once it is in the mill bins, with proper attention always to mill treatment cost. The need of a proper yardstick becomes more imperative with the increasing complexity of the problem. In the case of a simple, single-product operation on a fairly uniform ore, in which only one metal is of significant importance, the need is not great, as grade and recovery pretty well tell their own story. At the other extreme is the operation that makes three or four separate marketable products from a complex mixture of heterogeneous ores that vary tremendously in individual metal contents and ratios, degree of oxidation, and other characteristics, and in which gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc are all significant values. ECONOMIC RECOVERY The first attempt at obtaining a proper single yardstick for a fairly complex ore with which I am familiar is the use of the "Economic Recovery" term at the leadzinc flotation mill of the Sunnyside Mining and Milling Co., Eureka, Colorado. This method had been applied there early in Sunnyside flotation-mill history (not later than 1920) and credit for the innovation I believe belongs to Messrs. Kuryla and Marquand. The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Its mission is to preserve and expand the economic use of coal for energy. By reducing the fuel costs and environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation, existing units become more cost effective and thus new units utilizing advanced combustion technologies are more likely to be coal-fired. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power. Fuel is a utility's largest cost element; maximum fuel flexibility will be a utility's best weapon in an environment of rapid change. In a regulated environment, a utility was limited in how involved he might get into fuel supply, in a purely deregulated environment he need only be guided by the impact on the bottom line. It is clear that these two forces will promote a close look at factors such as coal upgrading which can have an impact on the availability of low sulfur coal or emission of NOX and trace elements.

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. Adsorption of S02 on alumina used in the aluminium industry, so-called smelter grade alumina, was studied in the temperature range 15 C-120 C. The specific surface area of the smelter grade alumina was 88 m2/g. It was found that at temperatures lower than 40 C, sulphur dioxide is bonded to alumina reversibly by physical forces, and the adsorption can be described satisfactorily by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The heat of adsorption was estimated to be -33 kJ.mor1. At temperatures in the range 80 C- 120 C, which prevail in dry scrubbers in the aluminium industry, the heat of adsorption was determined to be -56 kJ.mor1. When S02 was adsorbed at temperatures higher than 80 C, about 30 % of the S02 could not be desorbed when heating the samples up to 250 C. In the presence of S02 and oxygen, the formation of sulphate was determined at temperatures above 90 C.

The preparation of coal is essentially the same for export as it is for the domestic market. The big difference, I would say, is that, while coal for certain domestic uses (utilities, for instance) need not always be of the highest quality, as long as it is uniform, the buyer of coal for export invariably demands a well-prepared, top-quality product. And he is willing to pay for it, as long as he knows what he is buying. This is where quality control enters the picture. The day is long past since the export market was the dumping ground for coals which could not be sold on the domestic market. Today, the export buyer wants American coals not so much for a price but for the necessity of blending the American coals with foreign coals to achieve the desired chemical and/or physical characteristics, To blend intelligently, he must know in detail what are the qualities of the coals to be blended. Sampling and chemical analysis facilities at the piers provide the information on the coals exported, These facilities are maintained for the export buyer by independent laboratories; however, in one instance, the buyer operates his own laboratory. With very few exceptions, and Clinchfield?s Moss No. 3 mid-volatile coal is one, cargoes shipped overseas are loaded as blends of two or more coals. Up to now, foreign requirements have not been too clearly defined; therefore, shippers must be prepared to blend mixtures of the desired combination. Successful blending requires an accurate knowledge of the coals shipped. And this makes it necessary for the coal producer to maintain his own control laboratory.

A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affect the wellbeing of workers and result in poor quality work, lower work performance and decreased motivation. In contrast to ‘occupational’ diseases where there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hazard and disease (e.g., asbestos and asbestosis, lead and lead poisoning), ‘work-related’ diseases are multifactorial, where the work environment and the type of work that is performed contribute significantly to musculoskeletal disorders. WMSD is the term used to describe disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves). WMSDs are by definition a work-related phenomenon. The literature shows inarguably that certain jobs and certain work-related factors are associated with a significant risk of contracting a WMSD. It is assumed that repeated movements and postures, static work, continuous loading of the tissue structures or lack of recovery time, trigger or cause a pathological process that then manifests itself as a WMSD. This paper looks at the prevalence of the WMSD condition at three mines in South Africa: a coal, a gold and a platinum mine. Predisposing factors that include work factors, presentation of symptoms and psychological factors will be discussed in the paper.

THE laws of comminution of Kick and Rittinger have been debated for many years. Certain data obtained from ball mill and drop tests are found to be in approximate agreement with Rittinger's law while other data would seem to support Kick's law. In all these tests the energy required to produce a wide variety of particle sizes has been studied. Surface area has also been measured with considerable difficulty, at first because it was thought that the energy associated with crushing was that required to create new surface, later because of precedent and because a more fundamental variable was unknown. Tests made with the machine shop type of grinding process show that normally brittle materials that are usually crushed can behave like the more ductile metals. Brittleness is then a relative property largely dependent on specimen size and stress state. The machine grinding operation offers a convenient means for studying the comminution of materials in which the important size variable retains its identity. The energy required to grind a certain volume of material is shown to be strongly de- pendent on size. Kick's law is found to hold very well for particles below 1 micron in size, while Rittinger's law holds approximately in the comminution of larger particles. While a physical origin of Kick's law is established in terms of the theoretical strength of materials having a perfect lattice structure, there is found to be no physical basis for Rittinger's law.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

Principles of Green Chemistry provide useful guidance for sustainable mineral process development. Laboratory bench scale testing was carried out using pregnant cyanide leach solutions, and a number of commercially available mercury precipitation reagents were compared using jar testing to determine the most efficient and selective reagents for mercury precipitation. The most efficient reagent identified was sodium polymeric thiocarbonate (NaPTC).Coagulation experiments with fine diatomaceous earth resulted in a stable precipitate, with good settling properties. On line monitoring of the mercury in solution is recommended for process implementation to conserve reagent removing approximately 90-95% of the mercury with minimal silver and negligible gold losses.
