Some interesting and, to American eyes, rather unusual processes for refining impure aluminum derived from scraps were found by American and British investigators who went into Germany in 1945 for the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was found was recorded in a series of reports (see page ), many of which have been released for general reading. This paper gathers under one title and summarizes the German work in refining light metal scrap. Reference must be made to the original reports for greater detail. Basically, the occasion and stimulus for the German developments in treating light metal scrap were hard necessity. Germany needed the metal for a rapacious war industry. Adequate supplies of new aluminum from reduction works were not assured. Great quantities of airplane and other light metal war scraps were forecast. It was evident that the scrap metal would have to be reabsorbed by the producing industry and would have to be kept of good quality. The normal current production of manufacturing scrap was being and could be consumed as generated. It offered no technical problem. The mixed scraps, especially those arising from crashed and decommissioned airplanes, however, presented problems of another kind. Airplane Scrap The recovery of usable aluminum alloy from the mixed assemblies that made up the piles of airplane scrap was attacked in different ways by different groups and with differing degrees of success. Three procedures actually were used on a commercial scale, one was in pilot-plant stage and another had come to a halt in the laboratory a year before Germany collapsed. Four of these five processes actually involved "refining"; that is, some measure of purification of the metal after melting. Sorting and Separation on a Sloping Hearth The simplest procedure for utilizing airplane scrap involved no refining in the strict sense of the word. This was the practice adopted by two representative plants visited by the author, the Leipziger Leichtmetalle Werke, Rackwitz, Saxony, and the Vereinigte Leichtmetalle Werke, Hanover. These firms did essentially the same thing that was done in England but not with equal success, to judge by their shorter experience, the smaller tonnage handled and by the number and quality of alloys produced. The two German firms named rough-sorted scraps by their easily recognizable alloys, essentially by part and shape. They used hand labor to chop and hack and tear apart. The activity of aluminum in liquid Al-Fe alloys .has been measured by an improved version of the transportation method in which the metallic vapor has been collected by its solution in a metallic condenser. The results can be represented by the equation: log yAl = -3.0(1 - xAl2) (0.6 < XAl < 1.0) This equation applies at 1315°C. MORRIS and zellarsl adapted the transportation method for measuring the vapor pressure of a com- ponent of an alloy at high temperature. We have modified their technique further2 for use with metals that are strong oxide formers. In the present case the method has been applied to the Al- Fe system to obtain the activity of aluminum in the liquid region at 1315°C. Dried ultrahigh-purity hydrogen (Matheson) is the carrier gas. The operations, Fig. 1, of deoxidizing the gas, equilibrating the gas with the sample at 1315";, and then collecting the aluminum vapor are all accomplished within a single, continuous alumina tube to avoid contamination of the system by leaks. De-oxidation to a very low level of PO2 (<10-25 atm) is Obtained by passing the hydrogen through a tightly packed bed of aluminum powder. Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

Crandell, President, presiding. PRESIDENT CRANDELL: Gentlemen, the meeting will come to order. I presume most: of you have heard the decision of the Supreme Court in the steel case. The decision was six to three that the President had no legal authority to seize the steel industry, and it is reported that the strike is already under way. Gentlemen, it is both a pleasure and an honor to talk to you who come to the meeting of the Coal Mining Institute, many of you, from long distances. Our program committee has suggested that the president give a 30-minute talk, but you may be at case because I assure you I won&apos;t take anywhere near that long, when we will pass to more instructive and enlightening subjects. Another reason for the short talk that I am going to make is that many men in this audience know more about coal mining, specialized subjects, than I do.

Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015. MANY trends were evident in the coal industry during 1951. Some were favorable for the industry; others were not. Probably those having the most far-reaching consequences are those affecting coal&apos;s markets. The rapid dieselization of many railroads and the continued trend toward oil and natural gas for home heating has caused serious dislocations in various mining districts. Mines have been forced to close down or to work on a reduced time basis. Conversely the increased activity in the metallurgical industries has increased the demand for coking and special purpose coals, and the growing production of electric energy has increased the demand in certain areas for steam coals. The increased demand for metallurgical coal and for steam raising by the large utilities is more than equal tonnage-wise to the loss of coal to railroad dieselization and conversions to oil and gas in the domestic market. Since much of the expansion is at captive mines of large corporations, many commercial operators supplying railroad and domestic users have had their markets curtailed without any compensating demand from other sources. Feverish activity was in evidence in many areas by commercial operators attempting to find new markets. The Norfolk and Western Railway is the, only major American railroad committed to the burning of coal. It has an exceptionally good cost record. During 1951, fifteen additional modern coal-burning steam switching locomotives were authorized for construction in the company&apos;s Roanoke shops at a cost of about $1,450,000. When the new order is completed the road will own a total of sixty locomotives of the modern-switcher type, including thirty acquired by purchase last year. The Norfolk and Western today is the only American railroad building its own motive power. All of these locomotives burn coal. Production Coal production in the year 1951 will approximate 570 million tons of anthracite, bituminous coal, and lignite. Of this, approximately 7 pet is anthracite. Total production is approximately 30 million tons more than in 1950 and reflects the increase in general industrial activity. Exports are expected to be close to 50 million tons. The industrial stockpile is close to 75 million tons, the highest it has been since 1943. With the exception of the usual local stoppages the year 1951 was unmarked by labor disputes. It was a year of good labor-management relations with a negotiated wage increase unmarred by a work stoppage. This may be the beginning. of an era of sensible negotiations to find agreeable settlements of disputes without the usual protracted bickering and industry-wide strike. The United Mine Workers of America has condemned wildcat strikes, stating that in nearly every, instance proper grievance procedures have not been instituted. Government defense organizations, perhaps profiting by their experiences during World War II, are pursuing a more enlightened program with regard to the fuel requirements of the nation. Many prominent officials have stated that wherever possible coal should be considered the primary source of fuel in all defense expansion. With the increased consumption of steel by defense projects, approval of transportation facilities for liquid and gaseous fuels have been refused where these fuels would enter a coal producing area. Liquid and gaseous fuel producers also have failed to provide satisfactory evidence that they have sufficient reserves and are capable of supplying their product in adequate amounts for the periods of time required. Realization has at last become prevalent that the hydro-electric power installations in several areas are insufficient to handle increased demands.&apos; Steam generating plants are being constructed in these areas and equipped to burn coal. Most notable of these, is the TWA area whose supplemental steam power plants are expected to consume 10 million tons of coal per year when completed. The Pacific Northwest is another area which is expected to follow the same pattern. Nearly all new steam-power generating plants are being equipped to burn coal either as a primary fuel or as an emergency measure. Metallurgical Coal The steel and other metallurgical industries are expanding rapidly to meet increased industrial demands and defense orders. Since these industries are dependent on coke, coke has had a year of high production and can be expected to break all existing records when steel-plant expansions are completed. Most notable of the expansion projects is that of the Delaware River area where the iron ore will be received by ship from Canada and South America. U. S. Steel is only one of several steel corporations that are planning on putting integrated steel producing units in this area. The Defense Solids Fuels Administration announced in December that through. Foulger presiding. PRESIDENT FOULGER: We are a little bit late getting started, gentlemen. We have a few more members out there to register and we will wait just a few minutes until they are finished and then we will begin. The Honorable Earl J. Glade won&apos;t be here until 2:00 o&apos;clock this afternoon. I understand lie was unavoidably detained so we are going to go down this program pretty rapidly when we get started, but we want to wait until those gentlemen still unregistered come in. Misfires in underground and surface production blasts can be costly. Costs can arise from loss of resource, production interruptions, having to redrill or otherwise refire the blast (a hazardous process at best), due to added secondary blasting or breakage, and/or from increased LHD maintenance costs attributable to poor fragmentation.

The world's longest highway-tunnel -- the Aurland Tunnel in western Norway -- is scheduled to be opened in the year 2000. A project to build a main highway between Oslo and Bergen with no ferry connections was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in January 1995. Construction of the five-year blasting project was started by the Norwegian Highway Authority in mid-March 1995, with an expected completion date of November-December 1999.

The Cannington silver lead zinc deposit is located near Mt Isa in North West Queensland. This world class orebody is owned by BHP World Minerals (BHP) and is estimated to contain 45 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 11 per cent lead, four per cent zinc and 500 grams/tonne silver. At BHPÆs planned 1.5 Mtpa extraction rate, the mine life will exceed 20 years. Construction of the underground mine, which commenced in August 1993, was carried out by Peabody Resources Ltd (Mining Services Division) (PRL) for BHP Minerals Pty Limited (BHP) under contract packages totalling approximately $100 M using several innovative techniques to deliver safety, quality and time related project goals. Client/Contractor Partnering, resulting in harmonious working relationships, a combined commitment to the achievement of an excellent safety record, and a seamless transition from the construction phase to operation of the mine, has been a feature of the project.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT) has been working with operations around the world to increase their efficiency through æMine-to-MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) projects. These projects have delivered significant improvements in mine efficiency, mill throughput and reduced operating costs at mines around the world. The MMPT methodology involves rock characterisation, site auditing, data collection, modelling/simulation and implementation of integrated operating and control strategies on site. This results in significant benefits to the operations û for example, 5 to 20 per cent increases in concentrator throughput have been measured. MMPTÆs rock characterisation utilises simple and inexpensive measurements that can be performed by trained site personnel. The advantage of these measurements is that a large amount of data can be collected in a very short timeframe, as the samples do not require shipping to an outside laboratory. Typically, a PIO project starts with a site visit to perform blasting and process audits, collect high quality data including measurements of run-of-mine fragmentation and survey data around all crushing and grinding circuits. These measurements are combined with rock characterisation and the definition of strength and structure domains to model the complete production chain. Site-specific models of the blast fragmentation, crushing, grinding and flotation processes can then be developed. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG or conventional grinding circuits. Process improvements can be higher mining productivity, higher mill throughput, decreased overall operating costs and higher flotation or leach recovery. This paper discusses a recent application of PIO conducted at a large open pit operation in South America and emphasises the potential that every operation has to ædo more with what they haveÆ.

Uniaxial tests performed on core from instrumented sites at Amandelbult 1 shaft, Impala 10 shaft and Union Section Spud shaft showed a nonlinear elastic relationship between applied load and induced deformation. This nonlinear behaviour does not appear to be dependent on borehole orientation but in the case of the Amandelbult and Union sites appears to have been influenced by the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling. Cores drilled at these two sites under destressed conditions, such as over a stope, showed a linear elastic response to the applied load whereas most of the cores drilled under relatively high radial stresses were nonlinear. The Impala 10 shaft tests, however, all showed strong nonlinear behaviour irrespective of the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling, although high stress conditions may have influenced the severity of the nonlinearity. A comparison between underground stress change measurements and an elastic model indicated that the rock mass became nonlinear when the virgin stress condition was relaxed to about 10 MPa. The cores for laboratory testing were retrieved from vertical boreholes drilled up from the centre of a stope and from horizontal boreholes drilled over pillars and stopes at about 600 m, 1 100 m and 1 400 m below surface for the three sites respectively. The k-ratios under virgin conditions were estimated from sockets, modelling and stress measurements to be 1.0, 1.3, and 0.5 for the Amandelbult, Impala and Union sites respectively. Of the three sites, therefore, Impala 10 shaft appears to have had the highest virgin stress state. Tests performed on similar rocks from shallower depths at Impala Platinum essentially showed a linear relationship between stress and strain. From the small Impala Platinum rock test database available to the project, it appears that the nonlinear elastic behaviour initiates at this mine from about 1 000 m below surface and seems to become progressively more nonlinear below this depth. In addition, the nonlinear elastic rocks are weaker, have a lower Young?s modulus and a higher Poisson?s ratio than their linear elastic equivalents. Interestingly the tangential Poisson?s ratios of the nonlinear elastic materials are often greater than 0.5 at 50% of the failure stress, suggesting an early failure initiation. The paper describes the microscope and modelling work done to determine the causes of the nonlinear behaviour and discusses some implications of the behaviour for deep-level mining.

An actor-critic reinforcement learning approach is presented to improve the production of an industrial mining complex by defining shovel allocation and adapting the short-term plan given grade-control decisions. Blasthole data updates the simulated orebody models, which are input into a stochastic grade-control method based on a spatially constrained clustering approach that minimizes the profit-loss function. These aspects are embedded in a discrete-event simulator that defines the material flow from faces to processors. A case study at a copper mining complex shows the methods’ ability to adapt to new information, improving the quality of the material feed and increasing cash flow by 23% compared to a baseline case.

Dual phase (DP) steels are designed to consist of hard martensite dispersed in a relatively soft ferrite matrix, which offers a favorable combination of high strength with good deformability. Fiber laser welding (FLW) is becoming increasingly important for joining advanced materials due to its flexibility and deep penetration. In this study, the microstructure of a dual phase steel, DP980, welded by FLW technique was carefully analysed. Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulation coupled with analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the FLW process produced significant microstructural changes in a narrow heat affected zone (HAZ) and fusion zone (FZ), which can result in dramatic changes in mechanical properties. This is reflected in the micro-hardness profile obtained across the welded material. The salient phase transitions induced by the FLW, including the formation of new martensite grains in the upper-critical HAZ and FZ, are discussed.

Gold production commenced in New Zealand during the gold rush of 1861, and recovery to date is over 900 tonnes, almost 60% of which was alluvial. New Zealand pioneered development of bucket line dredges during the 1880&apos;s. The advent of the modern hydraulic excavator and increased gold price led to a resurgence in alluvial production with about one hundred plants in operation in 1988. The processing plants are mainly floating, with throughputs of 50-100m3/hr fed by backhoes of 20-40 tonne operating weight. Some larger plants with more sophisticated recovery systems have commenced over the last few years, with the largest using a 180 tonne backhoe.

The Kolar gold field has been for a long time the most important gold-producing area of India. It is situated in the Skate of Mysore, southern India, and not far from the City of Bangalore. The productive field is about 3 miles long and in it a gold-bearing quartz vein varying in width from 1 in. to over 10 ft. is worked. The vein carries high values to great depths and many of the mines have paid large dividends. Geological Formations In KolaR Region The rocks of the Kolar region are pre-Cambrian in age and bear a close resemblance to some of the pre-Cambrian formations of America. The oldest rocks seen are basic lavas, now mostly altered to hornblende-schists, with which is associated some banded iron-formation; these rocks are similar to the Keewatin schists and iron-formation in the Lake Superior region. The schist is cut by the gold-bearing quartz vein. In certain parts of the area there is also a conglomerate containing pebbles of granite, jasper, and schist. The matrix resembles a hornblende-schist and is intruded by small granite dikes, which in some cases have been pinched off by squeezing of the rock. This has led Dr. W. I?. Smeeth, Chief Inspector of Mines of Mysore, to whom the writer is greatly indebted for information regarding this area and for his hospitality while visiting the field, to regard this conglomerate as a breccia due to crushing of granite dikes in the schist. Dr. J. W. Evans has regarded the conglomerate as probably a squeezed glacial boulder clay. From analogy with pre-Cambrian conglomerates in America, the writer regards it as a metamorphosed rock similar to our basal Huronian conglomerate. However, the main bearing which it has upon the problem under discussion is the apparent fact that it is younger than the schist and that it indicates the presence of a syncline in the rocks cut by the quartz vein. Surrounding the area of schist and conglomerate is a large mass of granite-gneiss resembling the Laurentian gneiss of the Lake Superior region. Still later than the rocks mentioned above are basic intrusions which cut the quartz and schists; in the mines these are known as trap. One dike of this type is 50 to 60 yd. wide.

Of the seventeen western states, five-Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Montana, and Nevada-produce about 90 pct of this country&apos;s primary copper. All seventeen of these states occupy 60 pct of the nation&apos;s land area but receive only 25 pct of the country&apos;s total precipitation. Seventy percent of this precipitation returns directly to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration, leaving very little for ground reservoir recharge or immediate domestic, agricultural, or industrial use. With so limited a supply available for all, competition for water rights among users is severe. The result does not always permit using the limited supply to produce the most valuable end product. Most of industry and much of agriculture can shop around for suitable operating locations. Where water is critical to their purposes, they can and do locate in areas where the needed amounts are available. Such is not the ordinary lot of the mining industry, which must locate in the area of the deposit it is planning to mine and concentrate. In the case of copper this happens to be, for the most part, right in the heart of the semi-arid regions of the West.

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.

THE PROPERTY of Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., is located at Mount Isa, Northern Queensland, Australia, at roughly 20" south latitude. It is 600 miles from Townsville on the east coast, the port for Mount Isa, 1200 miles from Brisbane and approximately 1600 miles from Sydney in New South Wales. Living conditions in the camp, though wild and crude at the commencement of building, are now excellent and little has been left undone to provide comfort and attractiveness. The climate being warm and dry, many of the buildings are built on posts, 8 to 10 ft. off the ground, with spacious screened-in verandas. Club houses, stores, school, hospital and ice plant have all been provided by the company as well as modern conveniences, such as running water, shower baths, electric lights, septic tank arrangements, tennis courts and amusement grounds.

Oxygen-flame converting of a solid ground matte containing heavy non-ferrous metals in a wide range of concentrations is one of the perspective trends meeting the demands of modern non-ferrous metallurgy. As. a result, of semicommercial tests on oxygen-flame smelting of nickel matte containing 13,5-17,5% Ni; 0,45-0,65% Co under continuous autogenous conditions a converter matte containing 68 8-75,0% Ni and 0,48-1-,0% Co and ferrite -calcium slag containing 1,4-8,4 Ni and 0,16-0,56 Co were pro¬duced. Nickel recovery in a converter-matte was 76,2%, copper - 58,&apos;2% and cobalt recovery in. a slag was 90%. Slag cleaning in an electric furnace allowed to after-recover nickel and cobalt in an alloy to produce a dumpy slag containing 0,03% Ni and 0,02% Co. The development of modern&apos; ecologically pure energy-saving autogenous technologies of the treatment of sulphide raw materials containing heavy non-ferrous metals makes certain demands of the perfection of a process of converting rich sulphide-metallic intermediate products obtained at autogenous smelting. These-demands were connected first of all with the fact that converting process stages because of process periodicity are more unfavourable from the point of ecology, power intensity and unit stability. Besides, during rich matte treatment the problems connected with heat shortage when using air blast and heat excess-when using top oxygen blast to treat luquid matte a-rise and when enriching air blast by oxygen up to 26% fast erosion of the brickwork of a tuyere zone takes place.
