"As sulphide ores are usually concentrated by flotation , the material is very finely ground <37um), wet and impregnated with the chemicals used in flotation. These conditions are favourable to the development ofchemical reactions which are largely influenced by atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity, wind, etc.) as well as by the geometry of the piles.Physical and chemical properties of a chalcopyrite concentrate were determined by laboratory tests. The knowledge of these properties was considered necessary in order to establish a correct design of the storage and handling operations of the sulphide ore concentrates obtained by flotation.The properties studied in this work were: transportable moisture limit, flowability, effects of vibration, hygroscopicity, ""caking"", chemical alterations by humidity, oxidation and self-heating (auto-ignition, dry and wet oxidation, self-heating by humidification and its prevention).INTRODUCTIONIn order that the handling and the transport of a powdered material may be carried out correctly, it is necessary to know certain physico-chemical characteristics. Transportable moisture limit (TML), apparent density (both aerated and compacted), compressibility, angle of repose, angle of spatula, cohesion and angle of slide(l-4) are characteristics (among the flowability parameters) worth knowing.Moisture content of the powdered material is fundamental, because if this is too low heavy losses will occur when the product&apos;s particle size is very small, if it is too high, separations between solid and liquid phases may occur. In the latter case, the centre of gravity of the system may change suddenly and cause accidents, mainly if transport is by sea or by river."

"The study described in this paper, on the reactions in an iron blast furnace, is part of the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on combustion of coke and the reduction of iron oxides in the blast furnace. Previous study of the combustion zone of the iron blast furnace, by means of a series of as samples taken through the tuyeres across the hearths of 13 blast furnaces, showed that the combustion of the coke in the blast-furnace hearth is complete at a distance of 32 to 40 inches from the nose of the tuyere, measured horizontally toward the center of the furnace. The results of this previous work are sum¬marized in the curves shown in figure 1, where it will be noted that practically all of the oxygen disappears at a distance of approximately 30 inches from the nose of the tuyere.In order to determine the height at which oxygen is found in a vertical direction above the tuyeres - it had been suggested that the combustion zone turned upward near the tuyere and to obtain comparisons with the samples taken at the Bureau of Mines experimental6 (5-ton) blast-furnace at Minneapolis, the Bureau extended the gas sampling on a commercial furnace to a number of planes between the tuyere level and the stock line. The sampling was conducted on a 300-ton furnace, making foundry iron, operated by the Central Iron and Coal Co., at Holt, Ala. The furnace was smelting Southern red and brown ores and nodules from pyrite sinter. Figure 3 is a vertical section of the furnace showing the six planes sampled."

"Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

At present, the Codelco Norte smelter processes in the Teniente Converter and the Flash smelting Furnace 1,420,000 t/y of its Chuquicamata concentrate with an arsenic content of up to 1.5%. In a near future Codelco-Chile is considering different processing options for a new projected concentrates from the Alejandro Hales mine (former Mansa Mina mine with an arsenic content of up to 6%). The main option is the possibility to process 3,000 t/d of mixing concentrates from the Alejandro Hales and the Chuquicamata mines, in the Teniente Converter. The main feature of this smelting unit will be high volatilization of arsenic when processing high arsenic-bearing concentrates. The CN smelter staff carried out a technical feasibility study to evaluate the processing of high arsenic-bearing concentrates directly in the Teniente Converter, thus the low arsenic-bearing concentrates can be processed in the FSF. Accordingly, laboratory scale tests were carried out at the Tohoku University facilities. The lab-scale results allowed an industrial scale test at the Codelco Norte smelter to smelt 2,300 tpd of high arsenic-bearing concentrates in the TC and evaluate the metallurgical impact in the smelting, converting and refining areas of the smelter. The main industrial-scale result confirmed the stabilization of the arsenic content at 0.5% in the 70% Cu produced white metal at the test condition.

After the formation of a concentration gradient of SiC within C-C composite, either zircon or mullite thin films were coated on the surface by sol-gel process. Oxidation resistance tests of as-prepared composites with a couple consisting of a ceramic thin film and a SiC-gradient were then carried out in air at the temperature range from 600 to 1600°C. By the coating of zircon with a thickness of 1.5 µm, a pronounced oxidation resistance was observed; the mass loss by oxidation was almost negligible at 1000°C and one hundredth of original composite at 1400°C. In the case of the coating of mullite with a thickness of 1.0 pm, the marked improvement in oxidation resistance over the whole temperature range examined, from 600 to 1600°C, was found with the combination of a SiC-gradient and a mullite thin film

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. The LUREC® process is patented worldwide by OUTOTEC.

An accurate knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing sands4/ now is recognized as an important factor in calculations of the flow of oil through the sands to producing wells and in the estimation of oil reserves. To this end the Bureau of Mines laboratories are using a method that is an adaptation of the A. S. T. M. method of determining the water content of petroleum products (1).5/ However, the apparatus and technique have been altered slightly, as described in this report, to increase the precision of the method without affecting the simplicity of procedure or speed with which determinations may be made. Until recently petroleum engineers, when estimating reserves assumed that the entire pore volume of the oil-saturated parts of producing sands was filled with oil, as it was generally thought that the oil, water, and gas in any formation had separated completely during geologic time into distinct layers because of their difference in density. In 1929 Lindthrop and Nickolaeff (12) reported experimental results from which they concluded that 22 to 30 percent of the pore volume of producing sands in the Grozay district, Russia, was filled with water when the fields were discovered. Since that time numerous investigators (5, 7, 8, 10) have found evidence of water in the sands of now oil-producing fields and old fields that never produced water with the oil.

Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

"At the annual meeting of the International Association of Fire Engineers at Kansas City, Mo., in June, 1919, the Bureau of Mines offered to cooperate with municipal fire departments for the purpose of obtaining information regarding composition of the air in burning buildings. (Katz, S. H., Statement made at Convention of International Assoc. of Fire Engineers: Fire and Water Eng., vol. 66, July 16, 1919, pp. 129-30, also Fireman's Herald, vol. 78, July 12, 1919, pp. 48.) The gas-mask laboratory of the Bureau's experiment station at Pittsburgh sent vacuum bottles for taking samples to fire chiefs in twenty-five cities, who had signified their intention to aid in this work. It was hoped to obtain one hundred or more samples, because statistics in quantity are necessary for drawing reliable conclusions concern-in the likelihoods of encountering irrespirable as in burning buildings. This far, eleven samples have been received by the laboratory. Results of analyses and pertinent data regarding these samples are given in the accompanyingEight of the eleven samples contained, no carbon monoxide; seven of the eight were taken above the ground level and one below ground. One sample taken above ground contained 0.03 per cent carbon monoxide, and this quantity is not dangerous to breathe for a limited time. Of the three samples taken below ground, one contained no carbon monoxide; the other two contained 0.10 and, 0.35 per cent, respectively. This indicates that in a burning building, the hazard from carbon monoxide is much greater below the ground level. The cause undoubtedly lies in the poorer ventilation that is usually found in cellars or basements. Abundance of ventilation provides the necessary air for complete combustion, or if incomplete combustion does occur, the carbon monoxide generated by the fire is greatly diluted with fresh air and swept away by the current. It may be noted that the highest proportion of carbon monoxide was found in a cellar where a fire as burning among piled cases. The difficult access of air to the burning parts facilitated the formation and lib ration of carbon monoxide. The smoke here was very light and no difficulty was experienced in breathing. Some of the air containing dense smoke showed little change from normal air by analysis. Thus the density of smoke or the irritation and difficulty it causes in breathing are no indication of the presence of poisonous gas. None of the samples shows important oxygen."

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. Gardner, regional engineer, and his staff, of the Central Region of the Bureau of Mines at the time of this work in 1943; also to Kenworthy, metallurgist at the Rolla. "In Catalonia, between the 10th century and 1878, some installations were developed which at first were called ""factories"" and later ""fargas"", since they manufactured iron and steel of low carbon content. Because of its excellent quality, the fame of this metal spread from Catalonia to many countries. Fargas were started in Corsica, the Low Countries, Germany, Oriental India, Madagascar, Finland and along the rivers Orinoco and Mississippi among others. The extractive process used in these fargas has passed into history as the ""Catalan Farga Process"", ""Catalan Process"", or just ""Farga Catalana"". With this technology, raw material was obtained for the fabrication of tools, nails, weapons, grilles, etc. to supply the national and export markets. Aside from meteorites and native iron, found as metallic nodules in basalts in Greenland and Palestine, the ancient civilizations, which had no means to reach the fusion temperature of iron (1535°C), obtained iron by a direct process. Similar processes were used until quite recently (1930s) by certain tribes in Central Africa; holes in the ground were filled with iron ore and coal, and combustion encouraged by blowing air by mouth or with bellows made of animal skins. Thus without melting the iron it is possible to reduce the mineral and obtain a porous and impure metallic mass, which is purified on forging by mechanical squeezing. With a process very likely similar, the famous column at Dehli weighing 6.4 m.t. was built about 300 B.C."

In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.

"The Port of Yokohama is strengthening its international competitiveness as a strategic container port in order to respond appropriately to global exchange and shipping demands. Thus, the Minami Honmoku main Pier is currently being developed. The high-standard container terminals MC-1 and MC-2 have already started their service, and the development of the container terminals MC-3 and MC-4 is currently in progress.Because the South Honmoku Pier plays an important role in waste disposal management of Yokohama, a final waste disposal site (controlled final landfill site) is being developed in Block 5 to provide long-term and stable reception of waste that will be generated in the city. For this project, a revetment with water-blocking properties and an extension approximately 1.7 km in length is being built in order to prevent water from leaking from the disposal site. The base part of the revetment will be subjected to foundation improvement using the Cement Deep Mixing (CDM) method in order to secure water shielding of the soft sediment underneath the water, prevent slipping of the seawall, reduce the amount of subsidence, and increase the foundation support force.This report presents a preliminary study on using CDM on reclaimed soil and the construction process of the development project of the disposal site in Block 5 of the Minami Honmoku Pier, which has been underway since 2007.ABOUT MINAMI HONMOKU PIERThe development of the Minami Honmoku Pier started in 1990. It was designed to develop high-standard berths with greater water depths in order to handle the increasing volume of foreign container cargo and growing size of vessels. Figure 1 shows the layout of Minami Honmoku Pier. In April 2001, the Phase 1 (MC-1 and MC-2) began services. This is the newest pier in Port of Yokohama.This pier has one of Japan’s largest terminal areas (40 ha) and is equipped with 22 row-type mega gantry cranes capable of handling the newest ultralarge container ships. The pier has a quay with a water depth of 16 m, which is the first in Japan. The pier is equipped with advanced facilities and equipment to let Port of Yokohama be internationally competitive and function as an international commercial hub. An innovative system for high-efficiency transport is currently being introduced; it includes the installation of waiting vehicle lanes and a reservation-based loading and unloading system.Since the fiscal year 2007, a new container terminal (MC-3) with a -20m deep quay capable of handling the increased size of container ships and the diversification of port logistics has been under construction and is nearly completed."

ECONOMIC deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden, Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definitely stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers.&apos; Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer. It increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output. It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from fluorite with fatty acid collectors because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface. A simplified flotation process using Pb-BHA complexes was developed to replace the energy-inefficient Petrov’s process of using a fatty acid, increasing the recovery of scheelite and reducing the cost. The relationship between surface chemical properties (crystal chemistry, solubility, and Zeta potential) of minerals and flotation by using a fatty acid or Pb-BHA complexes was studied in detail to provide new insights into the selective separation mechanism. The results indicate that the scheelite surface exposes more O atoms than Ca and that they are negatively charged due to the anisometric dissolution of Ca and WO4, which provides the possibility for separation using selective interfacial reaction. The FTIR and Zeta potential results indicate that both chemical and electrostatic adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface. The XPS results of the atomic composition and binding energies confirmed the presence of the adsorbed Pb-BHA complexes and that O and Ca may be the active adsorption sites. Therefore, scheelite was able to be collected by forming either a Ca-O-Pbcollector or W-O-Pb-collector (BHA). However, fluorite was only able to be collected by a fatty acid collector and colloidal [H2SiO3]n -, and a high temperature was needed improve the selective desorption of the adsorbed fatty acid collector by forming Ca-[H2SiO3]n - on the fluorite surface, resulting in serious problems in industry. However, the Pb-BHA complexes significantly contribute to improving the recovery of scheelite minerals, simplifying the flotation process, and circulation of the residual reagents and water. The new process has been applied in Shizhuyuan Mine, and improved the recovery by almost 10%.
