The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness study area is underlain by intrusive and sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone. No limestone has been produced from the study area; suitable material is more readily available elsewhere. Small amounts of gold, sapphires, and corundum were produced from a placer deposit along the banks of the Missouri River. The remaining gravel contains low mineral values. Other alluvial deposits along the Missouri River and Beaver Creek contain no identified economic resources other than sand and gravel. Some deposits could provide suitable construction material for local use.

"The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., has conducted a series of experiments an air measurement in fan-pipe installa¬tions in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-3. The chief purpose was to determine the friction factors for different types and sizes 3f fan piping, but much attention was devoted to methods of air measurement, not only with respect to the methods used for friction factor tests, but also to com¬parison with other methods.The air flow was measured simultaneously at two points 380.6 feet apart in six different fan-pipe installations, each over 500 feet in overall length, in a rock cross cut adjacent to an air shaft,The air pressure was regulated by two sinoco multivane fans, driven by 7 ½ h.p. motors, the fans being connected in tandem so that one discharged into the intake of the other through a short connector and the latter discharged into the line through a straight connection equipped with a honeycomb of 4-inch squares or S radial vanes to prevent spiral flow of air, At each point where it was desired to measure the air flow, measuring sections equipped with piezometer rings pierced for easy insertion of pitot tubes, thermometers, etc. Piezometer static pressures were used in all the tests as standard, and dynamic or total pressures only were obtained with the pitot tubes, except for purposes of comparison.The tubes had special guide blocks, designed especially for underground work. To insure greater accuracy two tubes were used simultaneously, in order to obtain the velocity pressure at the center of the section simultaneously with that nearer the circumference, so that the mean velocity would be determined as accurately as possible. The tubes were held in proper place by means of flat guide boards. Velocity pressures were measured in manometers."

The need for blast vibration monitoring can be attributed to a combination of three factors: Structural damage, Blast design and Human annoyance. Traditionally, vibration damage criteria are prescribed in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV), as measured or predicted in the ground surrounding a blast. The PPV in the vicinity of a blasthole is strongly influenced by the quantity of the explosive per delay. In general, the existing prediction models give reliable results but fall short of addressing the change in PPV when the charge is decoupled and/or distributed.

The Western Mining site at Olympic Dam, near the community of Roxby Downs in South Australia is one of the largest orebodies of its type in the world. It contains known reserves of over 10.6 M tonne of copper, with economic secondary metals including uranium, silver and gold. In 1996, an expansion project was commenced to increase mine production approximately threefold, to produce 200 000 tonnes pa of copper, 4600 kg pa of uranium oxide, 3600 kg pa of gold and 50 000 kg pa of silver. This expansion included both underground mining and surface processing investment. Because of the scale of operations, it was decided that ore should be transported underground by a railway system. In July 1997, ALSTOM Automation and Control Limited (then Cegelec Australia Limited), was awarded the contract to deliver a control system to manage and automate the rail haulage system for Western MiningÆs Olympic Dam Mine, as part of this major upgrade and extension project. This paper explains the overall design and the approach taken to implement route selection, route locking, train interlocking and track topology using normal industrial control equipment such as Programmable Logic Controllers. Included is a discussion of how this automation has improved the productivity of the haulage system by more than 15 per cent.

The Amacan Copper Project was constructed in the Philippines by a Finnish-Filipino Consortium during the years 1979 - 1982. The project involved a turnkey contract for a mine and a concentrator to process 25 000 tonne per day of porphy- ritic copper ore at a grade of 0.45% Cu. The orebody is located on Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, in rugged, mountainous terrain approximately 1 000 m above sea level. The adopted design principle was based on an efficient, straightforward installation utilising a minimum number of items of equipment each with high unit capacities. The consortium faced many problems which resulted in lengthy delays in construction and finally led to the client taking over responsibility for the completion of the project. The concentrator was successfully commissioned in July 1982.

SILICON bronzes containing iron are used to a considerable extent in industry, under the trade name of P.M.G. alloys. Various classes of wrought alloys fall in the composition range 1.5 to 3.5 per cent silicon, and 0.5 to 2.5 per cent iron. Castings may contain as much as 6 per cent silicon and 3 per cent iron at present. The constitutional diagrams of these alloys are thus of considerable practical importance. Copper-silicon-binary alloys have been thoroughly investigated by a number of workers, the latest reports being those of C. S. Smith1 and of A. G. H. Andersen.2 Although much work has been done on iron-copper alloys,3 recorded investigations on the copper-rich copper-iron binary constitutional diagram are not numerous. Tammann and Oelsen4 determined the solubility limits of iron in copper by means of magnetic measurements, and found that the solubility of iron in copper amounts to a fraction of one per cent at 400°C., increasing slowly to one per cent at 800°C. From 800°C., the solubility increases rapidly and attains 4 per cent at 1100°C. Hanson and Ford,5 using electrical resistivity measurements and the microscope, determined a somewhat different solubility limit. Of earlier X-ray works on the copper-iron system, very little has been published. The work by Bradley and Goldschmidt6 on copper-iron-aluminum alloys includes some information on the copper-iron binary. These investigators conclude that substitution of iron in the copper lattice decreases the spacings, which is contrary to the evidence of the present work. Hanson and West7 have investigated the ternary alloys of copper with iron and silicon. Although their diagrams are valuable contributions to the understanding of these alloys, they did not recognize the kappa phase,12, 7,8 and their diagrams do not everywhere conform to the phase rule. The present work contains a check by means of X-rays of the solid solubility limit of iron in copper, and an X-ray investigation of the ternary-phase diagram, which, owing to present conditions, it became necessary to curtail considerably. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES Castings weighing about 75 grams were melted under vacuum. The charges were made up of ingot iron, copper cathodes from Laurel Hill, and refined silicon supplied by the Electrometallurgical Co. Alundum crucibles were generally used. The exceptions were alloys 77 and 78, which were melted in graphite crucibles. The ingots were annealed at 800°C. for one week, then samples were cut for chemical analysis. Water-powered jackleg rock drills, introduced recently in South African mines are reported to be more efficient, faster and more comfortable to operate than conventional pneumatic drills. A comparative testing of both drill types was performed in Quebec. Based on its results and time studies done in the mines, water-powered drilling has been reviewed with regards to drilling rates achieved, infrastructure needed, side effects, health and safety considerations. This study shows that the application of water-powered drills may help increase footage drilled and improve working environment, but under specific conditions. The examples of such applications are given in the conclusions.

Stress-strain curves were obtained for single crystals of alpha brass in tension and in direct shear. Specimens were strained various amounts in a given slip direction, unloaded, and immediately strained in a second slip direction 60°, 120°, or 180&apos; from the original slip direction. Crystals strained in tension and direct shear had comparable critical resolved shear stresses and stress-strain curves. The density of slip lines in direct shear and in tension was essentially the same. The stress-strain curves obtained in shear were independent of initial orientation, choice of {111 } slip plane, choice of <110> slip direction, prior annealing temperature, and rate of cooling after annealing. There was no recovery after annealing for 4 hr at room temperature or 200°C; recovery was observed after 4 hr at 400°C. The crystals showed no asterism and mechanical properties were completely recoverable up to 20 pct strain. It was found that there is a barrier to slip in all latent close-packed directions, and that the magnitude of these barriers, evaluated at 3 pct strain, is proportional to prior strain and independent of the choice of latent direction in the {111} plane. The formation of Cottrell-Lomer barriers is discussed as a possible explanation for the hardening of the latent systems. AN idealized concept of plastic deformation indicates that a single crystal should yield at some stress that is dependent on crystal perfection and it should then continue to deform plastically by the process of "easy glide," which is characterized by a linear stress-strain curve and a low coefficient, ds/dE, of work-hardening. Hexagonal metal crystals generally conform to this ideal concept of laminar flow. In face-centered cubic metals the range of easy glide is always restricted in magnitude and it is strongly dependent on orientation, composition, crystal size, shape, surface preparation, and temperature. Since one of the principal differences between the two crystal systems, both of which deform by slip on close-packed planes, is the existence of secondary (latent) slip planes in the face-centered cubic crystals, it has been proposed that the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow, characterized by rapid linear hardening, is due to slip on secondary planes intersecting the primary plane.&apos;-.; However, the characteristic differences between individual face-centered cubic metals remain to be explained; in particular, it is not clear why the range of easy glide should vary so greatly in different metals and alloys similarly oriented for single slip. An investigation and comparison of different metals with respect to latent hardening on the primary slip plane should provide some of the information required to specify the necessary and sufficient conditions governing the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow. But, in order to accomplish this purpose, plastic strain must be produced by simple shear in a chosen plane and in a predetermined direction by some form of directed shear apparatus, the results of which must be correlated with the corresponding tension experiments. Two such experiments have been performed previously with zinc and with aluminum. Edwards, Washburn, and Parker" and Edwards and Washburn7 found that the strain-hardening coefficients in two latent directions in the basal plane of zinc were the same as in the primary direction. However, to initiate and propagate slip in either the [2110] or the [1210] direction, following primary slip in the [1l20] direction, it was necessary to increase the stress above that required to continue slip in the primary direction; when the direction of shear was reversed 180 deg plastic strain began at a much lower stress than that required to initiate slip in the original direction and the stress to propagate slip in the reverse direction was lower than the stress to continue slip in the forward direction, indicating a permanent loss of strain-hardening. Rohm and Kochendorfer observed softening in aluminum for all latent close-packed planes and directions. They also found that the critical resolved shear stress obtained from their direct shear apparatus was 50 pct lower than the value obtained from conventional tension tests, that the stress-strain curve was linear at 50 pct plastic strain, and that slip lines were not visible at strains less than 30 pct. At present it is uncertain whether these diverse results correspond to real differences in work-hardening characteristics of the close-packed planes of aluminum and zinc or to differences in experimental technique. In view of Read&apos;s analysis &apos;" of the stress distribution in the experimental arrangement of Rohm and Kochendorfer, there is some reason to question the significance of the latter results. In order to resolve this problem it is necessary to re-valuate the direct-shear technique and either repeat the previous measurements or investigate a third system. The latter choice seemed most likely to produce significant results with respect to work-hardening, and accordingly, it was decided to examine the hardening characteristics of the latent slip directions in alpha-brass. The choice of alpha-brass was dictated by the fact that easy glide is more extensive in this alloy than in any other face-centered cubic metal or alloy and, presumably, more nearly like the idealized hexagonal system. Experimental Procedure Crystals were made in graphite by the Bridge-man method in the form of cylinders, 11/2 in. diam and 8 to 9 in. long. An 1820°C isothermal cross section of the Ti-Ta-C ternary diagram was prepared from X-ray diffraction and metallographic data. No phases other than those appearing in the three binary diagrams were observed. At temperatures above the titanium transition temperature titanium and tantalum form a complete series of solid solutions containing up to 2 atomic pct C. The phases Tic and TaC also form a continuous series of solid solutions extending across the diagram. PREVIOUS work on this alloy system was very limited. Of the three binary constitution diagrams involved, only one, the Ta-C system was available in the literature. Preliminary data on the other two systems was received from the investigators during the course of the investigation and both have been published in recent months. It had been shown that Tic and TaC formed a continuous series of solid solutions, but the range of carbon content in this phase was not known. While Ta2C had been described, its solubility for or reactions with other carbides had not been reported. It was not known whether or not any ternary compounds occurred in the system. The present program was undertaken to determine experimentally the general form of the ternary diagram. It is hoped that the results will be of value in furthering the development of sintered carbide cutting materials and high temperature ceramets, many of which contain combinations of Tic and TaC. The Binary Systems Of the three binary diagrams involved only that of Ta-C was available at the time this project was started. The diagram of Ellinger¹ redrawn in Fig. 1, shows a hexagonal phase Ta2C having a very small composition range and a cubic TaC phase having a composition range of from 40 to 50 atomic pct C. The authors made a separate determination of the composition range of TaC using lattice constant values and found the range to extend from 40 to 49.7 atomic pct C in good agreement with Ellinger&apos;s diagram. Two determinations of the Ti-Ta system have appeared recently.2,3 These two diagrams are in good agreement and show that ß titanium and tantalum form a complete series of solid solutions. The Ti-C diagram by Cadoff and Nielsen4 shows a very limited solubility of carbon in both a and ß titanium. The single carbide formed persists over a wide range of carbon contents. Several values for the upper limit of carbon content of this phase have been reported."&apos; The highest value obtained in the M.I.T. Laboratory was 47.5 atomic pct C with a lattice constant of 4.328?.5 Fattinger7 describes a gas carburization method which he claims produces stoichiometric Tic although he does not present any data showing that he actually had 50 atomic pct combined carbon. Two series of tests were run with planer model &apos;BB": one at the Arickaree mine of the San Francisco Chemical Co., Rich County, Utah, and one at the Roslyn No. 9 mine of the Northern Pacific Railway Co., Roslyn, Wash. The tests at the Arickaree mine were started on June 25, 1958, and continued until September 30, 1958. Prior to these tests, an electrically activated remote-control system was installed, and other modifications were made on the planer. The tests showed that the planer in general and the remote-control system worked very well; however, the various cutting tools used would not consistently penetrate and cut the phosphate rock. This indicated that the cutterhead design had to be changed before the planer would operate efficiently in phosphate beds similar to the "A" bed in the Arickaree mine.

Respirable quartz duet and a kaolin clay dust have been found to be of comparable cytotoxic potential in vitro on a specific surface area basis (Wallace, et a1,1985), despite the distinctly different potentials of quartz and clay for causing pneumoconiosis or pulmonary fibrosis (Sheers, 1984). A respired particle depositing in a respiratory bronchiole or alveolus will contact a pulmonary surfactant hypophase, of which a primary component is diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or diacyl lecithin (DPL) (Clements, et al, 1970). Several studies have found that adsorption of such surfactant suppresses in vitro cytotoxic effects of quartz dust (Marks, 1957). Subsequent phagocytosis and digestion by a macrophage may remove the coating, restoring cytotoxic potential and initiating disease processes (Iles, 1979). Adsorption of dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) from emulsion in physiologic saline by respirable sized quartz dust and kaolin dusts, and consequent diminution of the dusts' hemolytic and macrophage cytotoxic potential have been reported (Wallace, et al, 1985). This report presents additional data on the cell-free in vitro phospholipase A2 enzymatic digestion of dipalmitoyl lecithin adsorbed on a quartz and a kaolin respirable sized dust (Wallace, et al, 1988) to investigate mineral specific differences in the rates of digestion and of consequent restoration of dust membranolytic potential. Respirable crystalline alpha quarts used was eighty percent smaller than 5 micorometer aerodynamic diameter with a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 3.97 m2/g. Respirable kaolin dust was ninety percent smaller than 5 micrometer diameter and had a specific surface area of 13.25 m2/g.

"Abstract - The McDougall-Despina fault set in the Noranda district of northwestern Quebec defines the eastern margin of the Despina cauldron, nested within the district-scale Noranda cauldron. The faults are stratabound in that they displace stratigraphy of the cauldron fill, but do not off-set the cauldron cover. The faults are occupied by dikes that acted as eruptive centers to volcanic members of the cauldron-filling sequence. Measurable displacement across the McDougall-Despina fault set is greater than 750 m, and coincident with post-cauldron volcanism. Feeder dikes cross-cut each other and are typically depleted in Na2O and CaO, and enriched in MgO, K2O, Fe2O3 and MnO relative to fresh flows. Economic and subeconomic massive sulfide deposits occur adjacent to the McDougall-Despina fault set at different levels over a stratigraphic thickness of 3000 m. These include the Corbet deposit, the subeconomic D-68 Zone deposits, and the subeconomic stringer zones of South Rusty Hill and Bedford Hill. Numerous copper occurrences and abundant hydrothermal alteration occur in and immediately adjacent to the fault set.The McDougall, Despina, and adjacent, parallel, ancillary faults define a synvolcanic fault set which controlled the location of magmatism, hydrothermal alteration and mineral deposition during the early evolution of the Noranda cauldron. Significant sulfide mineral deposition commonly occurred in proximity to the intersection of the McDougall-Despina fault set with northeast-trending synvolcanic faults. Recognition of synvolcanic faults is therefore a major objective of exploration programs for volcanic-associated massive sulfide deposits."

The Hamersley Province in Western Australia hosts large iron ore deposits. Each deposit displays various iron ore types that were defined on their metallurgical properties, especially in terms of porosity and mineralogy. Conventional porosity and mineralogy information on iron ore types are provided on 2D thin sections using automated image analysis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based techniques combined with chemical analyses. However these techniques cannot accurately quantify the 3D porosity. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a non-destructive technique providing a 3D image of the sample with a resolution close to 0.5 - 0.7 ¦m for samples size of up to few centimetres in length. 3D image analysis using customised algorithms now provide accurate quantitative porosity and mineralogy of iron ore types.CITATION:Fonteneau, L C P J, Godel, B and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. Most blast fragmentation models assume the rock mass properties, explosive properties and blast design variables to be constants and uniformly distributed within a blast. However, in reality all these input variables vary within a blast resulting in variation in the resulting fragmentation size distribution. A stochastic modelling approach is introduced in this paper to quantify this variation. This technique takes the input variables as statistical distributions rather than constants and through several thousand iterations, generates a statistical representation of the expected fragmentation resulting from a production blast. A case study of three production blasts from a large open pit mine are presented and the modelled fragmentation æenvelopeÆ shows good agreement with the fragmentation æenvelopeÆ estimated from Split image analysis. The various blast-related parameters influence different parts of the fragmentation distribution, eg rock strength and explosive velocity of detonation have most impact on the fines. The technique is used to identify the parameters that have the greatest influence on various size fractions. Such an analysis will be useful to direct resources to efficiently minimise the variation.

D. C. Ralston—The fact that none of the organizations that have worked on these ammoniacal leaching processes have contributed discussion of Mr. Caron&apos;s papers today is a matter of some disappointment. Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.&apos; Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron&apos;s two papers practically amount to a summation of his life&apos;s work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron&apos;s valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author&apos;s reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores. The Tennessee Copper Co.&apos;s flotation plant, refer- T red to as London Mill, processes approximately 4800 tons of a massive complex sulfide ore per day. The ore is predominantly pyrrhotite and pyrite, the other sulfides being chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and a small amount of galena. Magnetite of economic value is also present. There are four concentrates produced. In decreasing tonnage, these are iron, copper, zinc and lead. The ore feeding the mill is a composite of ores from five mines which vary in grade. Therefore, in order to provide a fairly constant feed to the mill, the ore is blended several times before reaching the flotation machines. The flotation plant is divided into three main sections: bulk, copper and zinc. Fig. 1 shows a simplified flowsheet. The first two sections, the bulk and copper, were the two sections studied most closely in utilizing the computer.

Following is a brief history of Bureau of Mines Division of Coal-Mine Inspection activities that have favorably effected health and safety and reduced Injuries at coal mines: The Federal cline Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines for the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consulting with representatives of management and mine workers, and was incorporated in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, betweeen the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines considered imminently dangerous, but authority under Executive Order 9728 was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.
