"Carbon dioxide has been used for extinguishing electrical fires of many kinds (1, 3, 4) 3/ and more recently has been applied to some extent in fighting coal-mine fires (5). This report is concerned with the possibility of an electric current being conducted from a live power source, such as a trolley wire, across the impinging spray of carbon dioxide gas, to a metallic discharge nozzle, and then being grounded through the body of the person holding or touching the container. Rose and. Skinner (5) have described a case in which a fall of roof coal had brought down the trolley without creating a dead shot. The current was conducted in part through the loose coal to the rail, causing ignition of the coal. The fire was successfully extinguished with carbon dioxide.Dielectric data on pure carbon dioxide gas and liquid have been reported by Quinn and Jones (2). For the gas, the dielectric constants range from 1.00971 (35°C., 10 atmospheres) to 1.3072 (70°C., 151 atmospheres); for the liquid, 1.6016 (0°C., 50 atmospheres). Compared with the dielectric constant of air (1.0006, 1 atmosphere), these data, indicate that carbon dioxide in both gaseous and liquid forms is a very poor conductor of electricity, of the same order as air. 4/"

The flotation mill of Dentonia Mines, Limited, at Greenwood, B.C., went into operation on April 20th, 1934, and by October 11th a total of 15,000 tons of ore had been treated. It is intended in this paper to describe briefly the operation and to give some of the operating data which have been gathered. The metallic minerals in the Dentonia ore are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and, occasionally, native gold, and the gangue includes chloritic material, vein quartz, and calcite. Pyrite makes up about 90 per cent of the metallic content of the ore, in which it is disseminated as irregular grains and well-formed cubes. An average analysis of the ore is: gold, 0.27 oz. per ton; silver, 1.73 oz. per ton; copper, 0.12 per cent; lead, 0.31 per cent; and zinc, trace. From the mine ore-bin, situated near the portal of the tunnel at the mine, the ore is hauled by motor truck to the mill, a distance of three-quarters of a mile, and there dumped into the receiving bin, which has a capacity of fifty tons. The hauling is done during one eight-hour shift, commencing at 7 a.m. The maximum size of the ore fed to the mill-bin is ten inches. Lumps larger than this are broken by sledge hammer to pass through grizzly bars, spaced ten inches apart, installed above the bin. The ore is drawn from the bin by a 30-inch, 6-ply conveyor belt, 18 feet 6 inches long. In the near future, when the cross-cut tunnel is completed, the ore will be trammed to the receiving bin. This will effect a considerable saving in cost. At the same time, the bin will be set back several feet, so that the length of the conveyor belt may be doubled. This will make efficient ore-sorting possible, and so ensure a minimum of waste rock in the mill feed.

INTRODUCTION More than 97% of the total uranium production of the United States comes from sedimentary deposits (1). These sandstone deposits were formed by reduction of migrating uranium-bearing solutions from volcanic silicate rock sources. Such deposits occur in two major forms, either as relatively flat, lens-like deposits or as crescent- shaped roll front deposits. The lens-like deposits are found as discrete masses enclosed in reduced sandstone which is generally surrounded by oxidized sandstone. The roll front deposits are found along crescent-shaped interfaces between reduced and oxidized sands tone (2). In-situ mining of selected sedimentary deposits has proven to be a viable method of extraction and competitive with conventional mining for relatively deep low-grade ores (2). In in-situ leaching, uranium is recovered by drilling injection and collection wells in the ore body, pumping a suitable lixiviant to dissolve the mineral, extracting uranium from the pregnant solution by ion exchange, and finally regenerating and recycling the lixiviant. Even though there is increasing interest and practice in developing the in-situ technique for obtaining uranium values from deeper, lower-grade reserves, there is a lack of knowledge of the basic leaching kinetics and combined transport processes. In-situ leaching operations, in general, appear attractive for the following three general types of deposits (2): (1) low-grade surface dumps or deposits which lie above the natural water table,

This paper presents a method for obtaining the correct values of the breakthrough sweep efficiency of the staggered line drive, taking into account the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. Results obtained were different from those previously published, which were obtained by using an inexact shape of the breakrhrough streamline. INTRODUCTION In Section 9.31 of Muskat's' The Flow of Hotnogeticous Fluids Through Porous Media, it is stated that in a staggered line drive flood "the streamline of highest average velocity [is] the line of centers between input and output wells" (see Fig. I). Muskat used this concept to determine the relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the geometry of the staggered line drive pattern. Although it is clear from symmetry considerations that the breakthrough streamline passes through the midpoint between input and output wells, it is equally clear, as shown in Fig. 239 of Ref. 1, that the breakthrough streamline is not represented very well by the straight line joining the input and output wells. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the proper relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the pattern geometry by using the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. METHOD OF SOLUTION It was found that the effect of the geometry of the staggered line drive on the breakthrough sweep efficiency can be investigated easily by making use of the method developed in Ref. 2. With this method, it can be shown that the general complex potential for the staggered line drive, which can be considered as a rectangular five-spot, is given in the coordinate system of Fig. 1, by O(z) = In cn(z\m) = +(x,y) + i $(x, y) . (1) where z = x + iy, +(x, y) is the potential distribution and $(x, y) is the stream function. The function cn (zm) is a Jacobian elliptic function of parameter m and has simple zeros at z,. = (2n + 1) K + 21iK and simple poles at z, = 2nK + (21 + 1)iK. Thus, the complex potential behaves like a(z) = ln(z - zr.) in the neighborhood of the production wells and behaves like a(z) = - ln(z - Z,) in the neighborhood of the injection wells. Since (z - z1.v) = rll.ei, we note that the potential + has the proper logarithmic behavior near the two wells, while the stream function $ varies with the angle, decreasing clockwise around the production well and increasing clockwise around the injection well. The functions K(m) and K'(tn), related by K(m) = K'(m,), where m + m, = 1, are known as the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. By use of other properties of the Jacobian elliptic functions, the general stream function distribution for the staggered line drive can be obtained from Eq. 1: From the Jacobian elliptic function values, sn(0lm) = 0 dn(O(m) = cn(0jm) = 1, and f[K'(m)Iml = 03, it follows that the stream function given by Eq. 2 satisfies the proper symmetry conditions near a production well P located at [K(m), 01 and an injection well I located at [0, K' (m)]. That is, the line IOP in Fig. 1 is a streamline with value G (0. 0) = -0. and the straight lines connecting I and P to the point [K(m), K' (m)] is a streamline of value $[K(m), K' (m)] = -7/2. Similar symmetry conditions are obtained near other wells. It should be nuled that for m = m1, = 0.5, Eq. 2 reduces to the stream function distribution of the regular five-spot given in Ref. 7. Commercial deposits of sodium sulphate are harvested from alkaline lakes that are widespread throughout semi-arid southern Saskatchewan and adjacent southeastern A lberta. Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Manufacture of kraft paper is the mos1 significanl marke1 for salt cake, but addi1ional quantifies are used in the glass and detergent manufac1uring indus1ries.

The present paper firstly describes some recent trends from literature on energy management via process intensification to arrive at sustainable technologies for aqueous processing of minerals, metals and materials. Secondly, the energy saving measures practiced in leaching, solid-solution separation, solution purification, metal and material winning and environmental aspects have been discussed. The emerging importance of interdisciplinary nature of hydrometallurgy for practical applications is also highlighted. With the above background, the present paper describes an overview of energy conservation and autoclave processes with a special reference to hydrometallurgical research activities of our Laboratory.

"Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock/overburden interface;2. glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacial sediments;3. preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites);4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history;5. collection of adequately large and representative samples;6. appropriate sample preparation and processing;7. appropriate geochemical analyses; and8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited control over till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 µ m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

The present work is concerned with selective dissolution of niobium from Gabal El Faliq concentrate sample by using fluoridefree process. The chemical analysis of concentrate sample revealed the presence of high amount of ZrO2, Nb2O5, Re2O3, and HfO2 assaying 33.6, 1.99, 4.8, and 1.2%w/w respectively. Several economic minerals including zircon, samarskite, fergusonite, and xenotimewere recorded in the studied sample. About 98%of Nb content was selectively dissolved at the optimumconditions of 1:2 concentrate sample: KOH weight ratio, 2.5 h fusion time, and fusion temperature of 550 °C. Organic solvent extraction process using Aliquat 336S in xylene was effectively used for preparing pure Nb2O5 (98.95%).

"Autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills often operate in an unstable state because of the difficulty to balance the rate of replenishment of large ore particles from the feed with the consumption in the charge. This has led to an increased interest in obtaining an accurate and direct measurement of mill load and the behaviour of the mill charge. A problem in attempting to measure those parameters is getting a sensor that is both robust and sensitive enough for continuous on-line measurement.Techniques that measure the force acting on the lifter when it hits the charge inside the mill have got an increased interest recently because of the ability to combine it with DEM modeling. This paper presents a method for the measurement of the apparent filling level in a pilot ball mill equipped with the Metso Continuous Charge Measurement system (CCM). In this technique a strain gauge sensor is mounted on a flat steel spring which is fitted into a recess underneath a lifter bar. In addition, a conductivity probe, the Boliden Grinding Measurement System (GMS), is mounted in another lifter bar with the purpose of comparing the two measurements. To visualise the behaviour of the charge a 2D DEM modelling technique is used with Metso HFS software.The pilot mill is a grate-discharge mill, equipped with 12 rubber lifters of square size 0.1 m, face angle 45 degrees. Steel balls in the size range 10-30 mm and density 8000 kg/m3, are used in the experiments. Test material is a hematite pellet feed, d50 around 45um, chosen to get stable grinding conditions with respect to feed size variations.The experiment is meant as a first test of the equipment’s performance, and to study how the sensors respond to changes in some operating variables. To get an understanding of, and distinguish between correlation and causality, experiments are performed according to a full factorial design with two levels, and in addition two replicates of the experiments at a center-point in the charge level setting."

Laboratory and site studies demonstrated the apparatus’s advantages in terms of practicality and prevention of buckling. Whatever system is devised to control noise and ground vibration from blasting operations must present an effective compromise between the rights of the individual to be undisturbed by the actions of others, and the necessity for society, the whole of the population individually and collectively, to have the services and the products of commerce, industry and transportation along with the relaxation of recreational and cultural pursuits, all at a price within the means of the same society. One of the first jurisdictions in North America to attempt to quantify acceptable environmental limits for specific blasting operations was Ontario, Canada’s largest and most populous province. A process for development of guidelines applicable only to quarries and strip-mining operations was begun in 1974 and culminated with their inclusion in a “Model By-Law” published by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in August 1978. This paper examines the process of development of the final guideline document and its application over the last 25 years. While acknowledging that the published guidelines for air blast and ground vibration control have provided a useful and generally workable framework for the purposes of land use planning and complaint or damage claim reduction, a number of flaws, weaknesses and misinterpretations connected with their application are identified. Recommendations for amendment of the controversial items are submitted with a view to making these and potentially similar guidelines in other jurisdictions, more acceptable to both government and industry.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a simple method of producing low-phosphorus hematite concentrates from certain submarginal southeastern iron ores. The investigation was undertaken to obtain additional information on the Clinton iron ore outcrops at the southwestern extremity of the Birmingham district of Alabama and to assist in the development of operating techniques that would make it profitable to use the marginal ores of this area for blast-furnace feed. Batch and continuous pilot-plant tests demonstrated that a relatively simple wet scrubbing treatment) followed by a desliming operation to reject argillaceous (clayey) gangue, consistently yielded a marketable granular hematite product. Iron losses were relatively high but could be tolerated in view of the low treatment cost.

Gold and silver processing techniques are some of the oldest in the mining industry. Gold mining of high grade veins and deposits has existed for centuries. However, only with the higher gold prices in recent years and heap leaching techniques have the low grade gold and silver deposits become feasible to mine and process economically. By mining and hauling 3,600,000 tons of ore per year at an average grade of 0.03 ounces/ton gold and 0.385 ounces/ton silver, the Zortman- Landusky operations became profitable in 1982. To maintain profitably, a stripping ratio of less than one ton of waste to one ton of ore, and mine run ore placed on the leach pads which will yield approximately seventy percent go1 d recovery.

The A. I. M. E. Subcommittee on Bituminous Mining has been trying for several years to secure the information that was collected by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing &. on the subsidence of its property caused by mining coal beneath it. The Marquette company was willing to have these data used, but it was impossible to obtain them because the records had been filed away. About two years ago these records became available and the engineering data presented herewith were compiled from them by R. L. Auchmuty, assisted by L. E. Young, who was connected with the collection of the information. On account of the cost, it is impossible to reproduce all of the data here, although the original information is on file with the records of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. The accompanying charts show representative and average data and give only the engineering information with enough description to tell how it was obtained. PRobably the most complete records of subsidence due to coal mining in the United States are those compiled by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. at LaSalle, 111. These records, covering a period of more than three years, were compiled and used as evidence during the suit of the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. vs. the Oglesby Coal Co. at Oglesby, LaSalle County, Ill., in which the cement company successfully endeavored to stop the coal company from mining under its property. Fig. 1 shows a typical section of the geological formation. The cement company was mining the LaSalle limestone which lies about 125 ft. under the surface. The limestone is 30 to 35 ft. thick and underlain by about 15 ft. of shale. The cement company was mining about 20 ft. of the limestone, and in some places 10 to 12 ft. of the underlying shale, by the room and pillar method. The mining of the limestone always preceded the mining of the shale. The coal company was mining by longwall advance methods the NO. 2 seam of coal 42 in. thick underlying the limestone bed by 435 to 470 ft. Coal mining historically has been a hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work.

H. M. HOWE, Bedford Hills, N. Y.-One wonders, whether it might not be well to check, by a rather simple and direct way, the inferences that would be drawn from this investigation. Suppose we quench, in these various liquids cylinders of steel, selecting material that is not likely to split in hardening, and then examine their cross-sections micro-scopically. If the cylinder is of any size, you will find a series of concentric bands, a very hard band, a softer band, and a hard band-but it seems that here would be a way of checking the inferences from the cooling curves by comparing these waves of hardness obtained in similar speci-mens quenched in different liquids. One would think that there would be great promise in that way. One's first thought is to quench similar pieces of steel, similarly heated, in different liquids and determine their hardness. I suppose many of us have tried that. We then meet the-difficulty that it is not the most rapid cooling that gives the greatest hardness. There is an intermediate rate of cooling that gives maximum hardness so that you can not by any simple method as that check this cooling method. But it seems possible

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environ-mental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted beneficiation and smelting studies on siliceous offgrade manganese samples to indicate effective methods of manufacturing silicomanganese from materials that cannot be economically beneficiated to meet General Services Administration (GSA) specifications for stockpiling. Laboratory and pilot-plant flotation tests were conducted on 2 samples, 1 from the waste-tailings dump of the Domestic Manganese & Development Co , Butte, Mont., and the other from the Nettie mine in the Butte-Philipsburg area. Smelting tests were made on the combined concentrates from the pilot-plant flotation tests and on part of the tailings sample The flotation scheme found to be adequate in laboratory tests and later in the pilot-plant tests consisted of flotation by a fuel oil-tall oil emulsion in an acid circuit (pH )-1-.8 to 5.0). The oil-emulsion reagent flocculated the manganese minerals and selectively floated them from the siliceous gangue, In the pilot-plant flotation test on Butte-mill tailings 90.1 percent of the manganese was recovered in a concentrate that analyzed 32.6 percent Mn, 4.8 percent Fe and 28.1 percent Si02. In the test on Nettie mine ore 90.8 percent of the manganese was recovered in a concentrate that analyzed 36 6 percent Mn, 5.5 percent Fe, and 26-4 percent Si02.
