Em função da crise energética e do aquecimento global, faz-se necessário a utilização de novas fontes de energia como uso sustentável da matriz energética disponível. Do exposto, a CEMIG GT, a ONDATEC e a Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, investiram em um projeto no âmbito do Programa (P&D) Cemig/Aneel para geração de energia. O objetivo deste trabalho foi efetuar a avaliação do potencial energético dos efluentes gasosos (gases não condensáveis – GNC) e líquidos (Gases Condensáveis) de uma planta de pirólise de biomassa via micro-ondas para a produção de carvão vegetal. Para tanto, a ONDATEC construiu uma unidade piloto de produção de carvão vegetal (pirólise) por micro-ondas com capacidade de produção de 150 kg por hora. O processo de pirólise ocorreu em modo contínuo e em dois estágios, a secagem da biomassa e a pirólise propriamente dita, com a produção de carvão vegetal, gás de pirólise (GNC) e bio-óleo (GC). Em face dos resultados obtidos para o GC e o GNC, foi verificado um potencial de geração de 2,24 MWh de energia elétrica por tonelada de carvão produzido, que pode ser uma boa alternativa para desonerar a cadeia produtiva do carvão vegetal e do ferro gusa.

"This paper presents the drilling and grouting program performed at two abandoned landfills located into former calcarenite rock quarries in Manfredonia, Italy. Tests performed after the abandonment of the landfills detected leachate infiltration into the groundwater, which required the implementation of a remedial program. In order to seal the rock fissures and create an impervious basin at the base of the two landfills, sub-horizontal boreholes were drilled and grouted into the rock under the waste deposits. At the same time, sub-vertical boreholes were drilled and grouted along the perimeter, to laterally confine the landfills. Finally, the landfills were properly capped with an HDPE membrane, geogrid, geotextile and topsoil. The methodology implemented to create a watertight barrier under the two landfills was innovative and cost-effective. Moreover, the drilling and grouting minimized the environmental impact of the remedial work, since the waste remained in their original location and were not affected by the remedial process.IntroductionThe two landfills, “Pariti-1 RSU” and “Conte di Troia”, are located approximately 6 km (4 miles) southwest of Manfredonia, a small town close to Foggia, Italy (Fig. 1). These landfills are located into two rock quarries, formerly used for the extraction of calcarenite (i.e., a weak calcareous sandstone, in tuff facies), and were abandoned in the early 90s. The two landfills cover a total area of about 45,000 m2 (11.2 acres), and mainly include urban solid waste with a depth of up to 25 m (82 ft). The main characteristics of the two waste landfills are listed in Table 1."

Over the past 20 years, pressure die casting has evolved to a point where structural parts can now be produced by this process. This has been made possible by the development of vacuum die casting and by the development of die-castable, low iron content alloys. This resulted in the production of low porosity, weldable die-cast parts on which heat treatment may be applied. In the present paper, the influence porosities on the tensile properties of as-cast A360 tensile test bars was evaluated. This was done by casting 24 clusters, comprising three 6mm diameter test bars each, in a 280T cold chamber pressure die casting machine after a steady dynamic equilibrium had been reached. Modeling of filling allowed to explain the differences in porosity observed in the 3 samples of a same cluster while the results of solidification modeling were related to the microstructure. Tensile samples were radiographed on a real time X-cube apparatus and separated into 2 lots: samples where no porosity defect were visible and samples with visible defects. By measuring the tensile properties of the 2 lots it was possible to quantify the drop in tensile properties brought about by porosity, which is the most common defect observed in pressure die-cast parts.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 19601s, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines available today have unit volumes in the range of 38 to 42 m3 (1,350 to 1,500 cft). In fact, the motivating forces of increasing capital and energy costs and decreasing ore grades, which created the need for large flotation cells, not only still exist, but are becoming more critical. This paper reports the development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the development of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

"UHE Peixe Angical is a 452 MW hydroelectric power plant located on the Tocantins River in Tocantins, Brazil. In 1999, geologists began feasibility studies to estimate the river’s hydroelectric potential, and the decision was made to proceed with the construction of a power plant. In 2002, after extensive investigation, the studies indicated geological homogeneity at the site for the dam, except for an anomaly detected on the left margin, and construction began on the $1.2 billion project.As the work began, the complex ground conditions presented several serious difficulties. The solution was unlike any undertaken before in Brazil— a 100-m-long secant cutoff wall, with 76 1.8-m-diameter piles of up to 78 m deep. All were placed in a six-month period.In the preparation for the detailed construction plans, further studies in the area of the anomaly better defined the geology so that a treatment program could be developed. The feasibility study had detected silicified rock with high permeability in one area, and an injection curtain was designed with five injection lines. In the other area with an anomaly, further investigation revealed a permeable marble formation that was 50 m thick. Here, a specific injection program with three injection lines was developed.The injections started in February 2005 in the marble formation area. By July of that year, only the primary and secondary holes were drilled from the three lines, resulting in a space between injections of 1.50 m. By the end of July, the drilling was halted. The contractor had identified a thick area of heterogeneous material below the transition zone that was characterized by a mixture of soil, fractured rock and hard fractured rock. The anomalies were detected while drilling, and both the general contractor and the designer concluded that the phenomenon of “piping” was taking place.Constructing a positive cutoff wall became a priority."

A tecnologia de autorredução apresenta um grande potencial por apresentar características de alta velocidade de redução e de eficiência energética, resultando em economia de energia e em alta produtividade na produção de metal primário. Têmse dois processos consolidados de aglomeração. A utilização de cimento como aglomerante, com cura a frio que formam hidratos que conferem resistência, apresenta problema principal de sofrer degradação às temperaturas na faixa de 800 a 1000 °C, devido à decomposição dos hidratos. O outro processo é o de utilização das propriedades do carvão de alta fluidez e tratá-lo termicamente para que sirva de redutor e aglomerante. Este processo não é o de cura a frio, porém diminui consideravelmente a quantidade de escória em comparação com a utilização de cimento. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de analisar, na literatura técnica, os aglomerantes alternativos e iniciar os ensaios para verificar os comportamentos de resistência mecânica, principalmente a quente. Em função dos resultados a etapa seguinte será a de projetar um processo que seja compatível com resistência mecânica a quente. A análise resultou em sugestões para os ensaios. Os resultados preliminares, com utilização de bentonita e ácido bórico estão indicando resistência a quente das pelotas melhores que as obtidas com a utilização de cimento.

Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

A soldagem por brasagem a vácuo promove a união de materiais dissimilares com alto valor agregado. Este trabalho visa estudar a interação química do nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) na interface de ligação brasada do par Kovar®/h-BN. As variáveis de processo são determinantes para formação da junta brasada metalurgicamente estável. O trabalho estuda a molhabilidade do h-BN quando em contato com ligas de adição do sistema eutético Ag-Cu durante a solidificação. Foram conduzidos ensaios no h-BN a fim de caracterizar sua aplicação no sensor de posição do feixe de elétrons (BPM) do projeto do Sirius, e as propriedades que influenciam o seu processamento durante a brasagem, como coeficiente de expansão térmica e molhabilidade superficial. Os ensaios de brasagem com a liga Ag-Cu-4,5Ti, mostraram boa molhabilidade e espalhamento na superfície, favorecendo a formação da junta sem descontinuidades. As reações na interface são complexas no sentido de formação de novas fases e intermetálicos e, influenciadas pela seleção dos materiais, que possuem diferentes temperaturas de fusão e coeficientes de expansão térmica. Os resultados indicam que a seleção da liga com Ti, que é o elemento de ativação, promove a interação na superfície do h-BN com os demais materiais da junta.

Despite advances in pile design methodologies and piling techniques at site, difficulties and uncertainties still exists for design of piles particularly in coralline deposits and weak carbonate rocks. Such deposits are known to be heterogenous in nature, and occupy major stretches of earth, where piling experiences are probably very scanty. Such deposits are associated with low unit weights and usually consist of weakly cemented calcareous and carbonate soils interbedded with coral rocks containing cavities, which are completely void or filled with coral debris. Many of the studies indicate that conventional parametric relationships are may not apply to such sediments and rock formations. This paper intends to provide an appraisal of the available information that cautions against risks involved in conventional design practice and also serve as a guideline for pile design in such formations despite being a grey area of research. Contents of the paper is expected to provide a basis for the pile design and likely to serve as an eye-opener for research into this important soil-pile structure interaction problem.

The Bureau of Mines investigated two alternative methods for treating a zirconium-bearing chloride-sulfate strip liquor to obtain reactor-grade Zr02. One method involves neutralization with NH3 and the other hydrothermal precipitation. The strip liquor was derived from zircon sand by a Bureau of Mines method for separating zirconium and hafnium via solvent extraction with a tertiary amine. Neutralization with NH3 to precipitate hydrous zirconium oxide required 0.9 to 1.1 g NH3 per gram of zirconium. The NH3 can be recovered for recycle. Zr02 that met reactor-grade specifications was produced by precipitation with NH3? Hydrothermal precipitation of Zr02 from strip liquor required that the solution be maintained at 2600 C and 680 psi for 10 min and in a non-corrodible pressure vessel. In bench-scale experiments both methods gave-zirconium recoveries greater than 99 pct.

A resposta a impacto balístico dos compósitos de alumina com polietileno de ultra alto peso molecular (PEAUPM) com diferentes concentrações relativas de alumina foi investigada. Os testes de impacto foram realizados em velocidade subsônica usando sistema de ar comprimido. As amostras de melhor desempenho foram as A00 e A90, sendo fraca a adesão interfacial entre a matriz de PEUAPM e as partículas de alumina. A profundidade de penetração (PP) em madeira MDF, protegido por um disco feito do compósito, diminuiu com o aumento da concentração de alumina no compósito.

The mineral exploration environment has observable economic characteristics, the assessment of which provides guidelines for exploration planning in the mining company. The long-term survival of the mining company is directly dependent on successful exploration. Exploration planning contributes to successful exploration through the development of exploration strategies. The objective of exploration planning is to select exploration environments which will enable the mining company to realize best possible profit and corporate risk conditions. Thus, the formulation of exploration strategies is based on profit and corporate risk criteria. Strategic considerations include the selection of commodities as exploration targets, geographic concentration of exploration effort, the realization of acceptable survival conditions, and the structuring of an exploration programme to optimize the economic benefits of the exploration investment process.

Maintenance costs in the mining industry often account for as much as 18-20% of total operating costs and with the cost of labor and materials rising, they threaten to become an even larger percentage of the total. Yet, without an effective maintenance program costs can soar beyond what they would be without a program. In other words, when production equipment is down, there is no production and no product to sell in the marketplace. This cost of downtime in lost product far exceeds the actual cost of maintenance, which is defined here as labor and materials. Thus, mine management must have an effective maintenance program to avoid downtime and meet production targets. Attaining an Effective Maintenance Program Many mine management and operations supervisors believe that an effective program is a function of how hard they push maintenance. Yet, when vital production equipment is inoperable and production is lagging, no amount of pushing helps. In actuality, maintenance has little control over its own destiny and needs support from other departments to deliver good service. Success of the maintenance program depends on gaining control of those factors that directly influence maintenance. Consider the following. Organization-The maintenance organization must be structured for maximum responsiveness to production needs. Unfortunately, some needs are immediate and many are unknown in advance. The maintenance department has little control over them. These outside influences limit the department manager's ability to control his own organizational structure. Preventive maintenance procedures-Routine lubrication, equipment inspection, minor adjustments and the like are controlled mostly by maintenance. Yet, scheduling preventive maintenance depends also on the availability of equipment controlled by other departments. Planning-The purpose of planning maintenance jobs is to ensure that the best use is made of maintenance resources. If the production department creates an environment of running repairs and emergencies, there can be little planning. Even well-planned jobs will suffer if there is less than full cooperation in carrying them out. As a consequence, the maintenance department is not blocked from planning, but the value of its planning is reduced. Scheduling-Maintenance scheduling should be a joint effort. Although maintenance does the planning, production must agree to the scheduled maintenance of its equipment. Workload-As a service organization, the maintenance department has limited control over its workload because it must consistently respond to other department's demands. At best, maintenance controls only the fixed portion of its workload-utility work, janitorial service, maintenance shop work, and assigned repetitive and preventive maintenance duties. Unscheduled and emergency work are initiated by operations. Major maintenance actions require full cooperation. Labor productivity-The effective use of labor is tied to other key functions of maintenance. These include organization, preventive maintenance, planning, scheduling, and emergency work. An area type organization, for example, can often respond more quickly to immediate needs than a centrally controlled maintenance group. Yet, area maintenance can result in lower labor productivity unless tight control is exercised. One of the advantages of a good "detection-oriented" preventive maintenance program is early discovery of problems and better opportunity to schedule corrective work in advance. Under planned work conditions, use of labor can be more productive. Complete planning and scheduling can minimize time spent on each job, increase effectiveness of supervision, and improve labor productivity. Finally, if emergency work is minimized, there are fewer delays, less lost time, better coordination, and more productive use of labor. While labor productivity is an important factor in carrying out maintenance, it also is influenced by outside factors. However, few realize the impact of being able to improve maintenance productivity. Foi estudado o efeito do método de incorporação de pó de serra em PP/EPDM/talco, nas propriedades mecânicas e térmicas do compósito final. Os três métodos de incorporação foram: pré-mistura, por tamboreamento, de todos os componentes com injeção subsequente; alimentação em separado da fibra, da matriz polimérica e compatibilizante em extrusora dupla rosca co-rotacional, com injeção subsequente; pré-mistura, por tamboreamento, de todos os componentes, alimentação conjunta em extrusora dupla rosca co-rotacional, com injeção subsequente. A adição de fibras conferiu maiores valores de temperatura de deflexão ao calor (HDT), resistências à tração e à flexão, módulo de Young e menores resistência ao impacto e deformação em relação à matriz. Para o mesmo teor de fibras, o método de alimentação conjunta apresentou os maiores valores de resistência à tração e flexão, módulo de Young, e HDT, e maior queda na resistência ao impacto. O método com dois alimentadores apresentou maior deformação e maior resistência ao impacto. Análise termogravimétrica revelou menor teor de fibra incorporado, para o método com dois alimentadores em relação aos outros métodos. A análise de micrografias obtidas por MEV não revelou diferenças significativas na adesão entre fibra e matriz, quanto ao método de incorporação.

Industries that handle and process ‘dusty’ ores are facing increasingly difficult challenges to ensure sustainable operation and development. Most existing dust-control measures treat only the symptoms of dust generation and do not deal with the root cause/s of the problem. Many of these methods are also relatively inefficient in terms of controlling dust emissions. This paper summarises the various existing options available for dust control and some of their features, advantages and disadvantages. It then describes some of the new technologies that are being researched, developed and employed to minimise dust emissions by addressing dustability or dustiness and the dust generation mechanisms found in industry. Recent research results and case studies are presented to demonstrate some interesting findings obtained from this work. With improved understanding and modelling of dust generation mechanisms and bulk material dustiness, it is possible to achieve a step-change improvement in the design, troubleshooting and application of more efficient dust-control technologies.CITATION:Wypych, P W, Hastie, D B, Wangchai, S and Grima, A P, 2015. "A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. "Petroleum engineering is a comparatively new branch of engineering, with which few people, even petroleum operators and mining engineers, are thoroughly familiar. Petroleum engineers are responsible for the accurate keeping of well logs and all pertinent data upon formations encountered, for the careful analysis of such information, and recommendations as to most suitable places for drilling, for detailed study of methods of drilling, casing, and so on in order to obtain maximum production for a minimum cost.The Bureau of Hines has from time to time carried on work in all branches of petroleum engineering in the various fields of the United States. Such work is also being carried on extensively by the California State Mining Bureau, which has in its employ a number of men who have had, besides their technical training, actual experience in oil field work. This is about the only state at the present time which is carrying on this work in a definite way. It has therefore been the practice of the employees of the Bureau of Mines to go to other states and give such advice and assistance as might prove of value in development work and in prolonging the production of the fields."

Bureau of Mines research was conducted to develop effective separation methods that might be used in exploiting substantial tonnages of complex barite-fluorspar ores in Arizona. The exploitable reserves now may be increased as recent batch and continuous flotation tests demonstrated that a complex barite?-fluorspar ore from the Red Chief deposit, Yuma County, Ariz., could be selectively treated to concurrently produce (1) fluorspar and (2) a barite byproduct of marketable grade. The sample contained 24.8 percent CaF2 and 24.3 percent BaS04. Processing comprised production of a fluorspar product containing 97 percent CaF2 with an 82 percent recovery, using a sodium fluoride-lignin sulfonate-fatty acid reagent combination. Concurrent retreatment of the fluorspar tailing, using sodium cetyl sulfate as a collector, yielded a barite product of 94 percent BaS04 grade with a 71-percent recovery. The products met specifications for acid-grade fluorspar and drilling mud-type barite.

In the study of the properties of rutile pigments it became apparent several years ago that certain physical and optical properties could not be determined on particles of pigmentary size. Since reflected light is the dominant type which reaches the eye from small particles, the true color of pure rutile was not known. Most rutile pig-ments are acicular in habit, elongated parallel to the "c" axis. It was considered important to know the nature and tone of light transmitted, for example, by a basal plate. Further, as shown by spectrophotometric curves, there is a very strong absorption of light of 4000 A as measured on particles with random orientation. It would be interesting to see whether this absorption position varied with predetermined and selected orientations. Also, since the behavior of titanium pigments in a vehicle is important, a knowledge of the surface wettability of single crystals by various media should prove very fruitful. Finally, the optical properties of rutile are such that it should show, in a single pure crystal, greater fire and brilliance than the diamond. Mineralogists had long speculated that this would be the case and curiosity was strong to produce a single crystal large enough to cut. In light of the above, a project was initiated for the formation of single crystals of rutile. Method of Formation of Rutile Single Crystals Fortunately, purification of TiO2 produced from both titanium tetra-chloride and titanyl sulphate solutions had reached the stage where spectro-graphically pure starting material could be made. Spectrographic analysis of the feed material used in the initial experiments is compared with the present feed material in Table 1. It is apparent that the present large scale purification is approximately as good as the original experimental, small scale purification. Verneuil1 produced synthetic ruby and corundum in 1904 by the well-known flame fusion process, which today bears his name. Except for mechanical improvements the present commercial production of synthetics by flame fusion is essentially unchanged from his initial method. His burner consisted of an inner orifice through which was fed the feed material and oxygen. Surrounding this was a larger outer orifice through which was fed hydrogen at lower pressure. This arrangement consists then of a lance of oxygen burning in an atmosphere of hydrogen. The proportions of hydrogen to oxygen usually used in corundum production is about 3:1, providing there is sufficient temperature to reach the 2050.°C required for the fusion of alumina. From work done in the Titanium Division Laboratories2 and from the published work of Erlich3 it was known that rutile appears to lose oxygen near its melting point and that it would not be possible to grow single crystals in a strongly reducing environment.
