A commercial enargite concentrate was mechanically milled in inert and oxidising atmospheres for 10 hours. No substantial effect was observed in either an inert atmosphere or in air other than a broadening and weakening of the diffraction peaks. Milling dry in oxygen or wet in air was dramatic with a significant reaction occurring which formed arsenolite, As2O3 and CuSO4.5H2O, both of which are readily soluble.A small amount of SO2 was also formed. Dissolution in acid left CuS as the major phase implying incomplete oxidation. The small fraction of tennantite in the sample was comparatively resistant to oxidation.

Surveying is to tunneling, as a steering wheel is to a car—somewhat essential if you want to end up in the right place. The principles of tunnel surveying have remained unchanged since the first tunnels were constructed: To mathematically connect the selected start and end points of a tunnel and physically translate that alignment onto the ground. The alternative is just dead-reckoning and leaves the probably less than satisfying end results to chance. Today’s laser-guided tunnels often have to thread the needle through a maze of soil types, utilities, structural features and other underground considerations. Surveying makes it possible.

"Quebec Cartier Mining Company is currently mining a low-grade iron ore deposit in northeastern Quebec. The Company is producing some 8,000,000 dry gross tons of concentrates per year, grading about 66 per cent iron. The pit, which is located on the keel or hinge line of a fold, will eventually be about 1,000 feet deep with a surface area of 8,000 by 2,600 feet. The most significant structural discontinuities in the mine are the natural bedding planes and secondary perpendicular joints. The exposed walls are subjected to a sub-Arctic climate and heavy blasting occurs approximately six times a month.QCM utilizes design and operating techniques to control rock fall. Steps are also being taken to analyze the ultimate over-all pit slope stability."

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRL's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the seal's ultimate design strength. Six-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

A neutron irradiation technique has been developed which is suitable for the determinat- ion of the iron and aluminium content of iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt. The determination of iron entails measure- ment with a NaI(Tl) gamma ray detector of the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) due to thermal neutron capture in iron, while the determination of aluminium is based on thermal neutron activation analysis. For the latter a second detector must be placed down- stream to monitor the 1.78 MeV gamma radiation emitted after activation of aluminium. Although conveyor speed has no effect on the Fe measurement, it has an adverse influence on the aluminium signal, and the belt speed should not exceed 0.1 m/s if good accuracy is required. Static trials on a 460 mm rubber conveyor belt with constant ore geometry indicate that for iron an accuracy of ¦ 1.2% Fe (2a) can be achieved for crushed run-of-mine ore at

"Water and cyanide are highly contentious and conflict issues that many gold mining companies encounter worldwide when dealing with local farming communities, industries and cities competing for water as well as non-government and government organizations. Historically, the gold industry has used processes that required minimum amounts of water to treat and recover gold at locations around the world. Examples are dry grinding for refractory gold treatment in the late 1800s and early 1900s and dry blowing in arid/desert regions to recover alluvial gold. In recent times, new dry processing equipment has been developed and include equipment such as air tables and jigs. Researchers have also modified a Knelson concentrator to concentrate gold from dry solids. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) with air classifiers are used to treat industrial minerals and pilot trials have shown that the technology can be applied to comminute refractory gold ores ahead of roasting. Dry stacked tailings is being applied on gold mines to reduce overall water consumption This paper will review the available technologies that in combination may be able to substantially reduce the quantity of water used in the processing of gold ores.INTRODUCTION Water makes up most of the world: the planet is 75% water. Some 97.5% is saline water largely in the oceans, so that only 2.5% is fresh water and useful for human needs. The demand for water is driven primarily by population and concomitant economic growth. Overall, some 70% of the water withdrawn from the environment is used in agriculture, 20% by industry, 7% by households and 3% for mining (Brown, 2003: Maupin et al., 2010). Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Mining activities are often located in remote, arid environments, with limited access to water. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for its needs. However, much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (i.e. salinity has increased). In today‘s world, there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine, and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community. Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (i.e. by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing (Dunne, 2010)."

A cement, in the broad sense, is any substance which will cause various materials to adhere to each other. Clay was probably the first material to be used by man as a cement or binding agent. Water occurs in or is mixed with the clay to make it plastic, so that it can be formed in place. The sun and air remove the water from the clay and on drying strength is developed. The clays unless fired are not too resistant to water, therefore, their use is best when restricted to dry areas. Gypsum used as a cementitious material is not the subject of this paper, but its use dates back thousands of years. Gypsum mortars were used by the Egyptians in building such massive masonry structures as the pyramids. The Egyptian mortar consisted of a mixture of sand with burned gypsum (of an impure type of 81.5 per cent calcium sulphate and 9.5 per cent calcium carbonate) for the cementitious material. The burning of this type of cementitious material took place at relatively low temperature. These burning reactions will be covered later when the dehydration of gypsum is discussed. The setting of the partially dehydrated gypsum is considered to be crystallization from a supersaturated solution which deposits crystals of dihydrate (gypsum). In low water-content mixes, the interlocking of the needle-like crystals helps to produce higher strengths. Slaked lime made from limestone burned at higher temperatures (1648 F is generally considered as the calcining temperature, although under certain conditions incipient calcination will take place at 1250 F) is another early-period cementitious material. During slaking with water, a colloidal or amorphous hydrated lime is formed. When it is allowed to dry, it hardens and develops low strengths. On exposure to the carbon dioxide of air in the presence of some moisture, carbon dioxide is adsorbed and part of the calcium hydroxide is converted to calcium carbonate. Structures in which a lime mortar is used continue to grow in strength as this reaction proflesses. Hydrated lime has the disadvantage of not setting under water.

For years many oil producers have believed that often low-pressure oil- and gas-bearing strata have been over coked in fields where the rotary system of drilling has been used. Collom3/ gave as a reason for this condition that because the mud fluid was thick, the oil or gas stratum was plastered and sealed as the tools passed through it and no oil showed at the surface. Although this observation was made 15 years ago, it may often still be true notwithstanding modern developments in coring and electrical logging. Operators have believed, also, that mud fluid does not solidify behind the casing. Lewis and McMurray4/ stated: "All the evidence obtainable from practical experience points to the fact that the mud fluid properly mixed and employed does not solidify behind the casing, even in deer wells and after long periods."

The solvent extraction separation of nickel, cobalt and their associated metals have been considered for industrial application since the early 1960's. This review of the solvent extraction processes is limited to the industrial applications, pilot plant and the more extensive bench scale studies reported in the literature. The processes with their significant chemical and technological contributions are discussed in detail whenever the information are available. The application of solvent extraction to the nickel-cobalt processing has so far been limited to the secondary separation of nickel-cobalt containing feedstocks derived from other primary nickel-cobalt separation methods.

NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past three decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specifc to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. It will then describe methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects.

"A new embassy for the Peoples Republic of China is under construction in Washington, DC. The 475,000 square feet (44,125 m2) structure has five levels below ground and four above, making it the largest embassy in Washington DC. A vertical soil nail wall was used as the primary support of excavation system for the project. The soil nail wall was irregularly shaped, benched in areas, and up to 98 feet (29.9 m) in height. The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors. Overall, wall movements were lower than expected, with maximum horizontal movement less than 0.25% of the total height of the excavation. INTRODUCTIONThe proposed Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in Washington, DC, will consist of about 475,000 ft2 (44,125 m2) of building space and contain up to four fl oor levels above ground and fi ve levels of basement (Figure 1). When completed, the building will be the largest embassy in Washington, DC. The architect for the project, Pei Partnership Architects, along with the world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, made effi cient use of the site by inserting the building into the existing slope. Consequently, excavations reach heights up to 98 feet (29.9 m) on the southern side of the property and 42 feet (12.8 m) on the northern side.The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. The location of the building relative to the property line called for tight excavation requirements, including precise wall positions and shotcrete tolerances. A very high-grade calcite deposit located in northern Norway consists of CaCO3 ore with minor silicate and sulphide impurities. Cationic (Tallow-1,3-diaminopropane, Duomeen T) collector has been used in the purification of calcite by flotation with an aim of achieving calcite concentrate for its use in value-added products in a variety of industries. The feasibility of sulphide flotation from calcite by this cationic collector has been initially judged from Hallimond flotation and zeta potential on pure mineral systems and the results illustrate the removal of sulphide from calcite ore at neutral pH region. The adsorption mechanism of diamine on both the sulphide minerals was found to be the same by zeta potential studies. The variations in zeta potential are in good agreement with the adsorption of diamine molecular and ionic species as a function of pH. FTIR studies also showed the adsorption of diamine species in agreement with the zeta potential and Hallimond flotation results. Furthermore, the removal of sulphide impurities with selective flotation by diamine collector was performed in bench-scale flotation with the calcite ore and the results indeed showed that the calcite concentrate could meet the quality requirements for its use in the paper industry for coating and filler purposes.

"In this article, with the help of the X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), a modern test method, all the characteristics of the chlorite,and adsorption collector A6 on the surface of chlorite have been studied. There exist abundant carboxylic C-O and C=O structures in the Carbon XPS atlas with strong adhesive ability after the reaction between new collector A6 and chlorite, which indicates that the ring structure and ether-base functional groups can strengthen the reaction between collector A6 molecule and chlorite surface. The results of XPS analysis indicate that the photoelectron spectroscopy peaks of Mg2p and Al2p moved towards low energy after collector A6 absorbed on chlorite surface, which indicates that chemical bonding through electron cloud transfer happened between collector A6 and Mg, Al ions of chlorite surface. The chemical reaction promoted the adsorption of A6 on chlorite surface and eventually improved the ability of A6 to float and collect chlorite.INTRODUCTIONThere are a large amount of iron-bearing silicate minerals such as chlorite in different types of gangue minerals in iron ore from different areas besides quartz (Yingyong et al, 2012; Qiang et al, 2009). There always exist Mg2+, Al3+ Fe3+ and other metallic ions due the isomorphic replacement among the irons of this kind of minerals. The dissolution often occurs on the surface of minerals with abundant metallic ions during grinding process, and some ions are exposed on the surface, such as Mg2+, Fe3+, Al3+, Si4+, which can increase the surface electrical behaviour of iron-bearing silicate minerals (Wanzhong & Chuanyao, 2002; Yuping et al., 2007), making it easy for the surface to react preferentially with the depressants such as causticizing starch which making it impossible for the surface to reach with conventional anionic fatty acid collector (Mowla et al, 2008). Thus, the beneficiation efficiency is dramatically decreased and the improvement of concentrate grade becomes very difficult. The conventional aliphatic acid collector has some defects such as poor selectivity, poor low temperature resistance, sensitive to water hardness, etc. Thus, the addition of synergist (Liu, & Yu, 2015) or other compound reagents (Zhou et al, 2015) can promote the adsorption of reagents to mineral surface, and improve the collecting capacity and selectivity of aliphatic acid collector to minerals. The addition of polar group to nonpolar group in aliphatic acid can improve the water solubility, dispensability and hard water resistance (Tian et al, 2013). The nitrogen atoms in amid ate aliphatic acid collector can adsorb on mineral surface by itself and supply coordinate electron which can form chelating keys to improve the collecting capacity of collector. There exist coordinate electron in oxygen atoms of ether acid collector, which, along with the oxygen on carboxyl compose chelate with metal (Luo et al, 2015). There are also exist some opinions that the ether acid can arrange into similar crown ether structure which can absorb on mineral surface. A new alicyclic unsaturated ether acid compounds collector A6 is adopted in this paper, the structural formula is listed in Figure 1. The A6 has a strong collecting ability to chlorite with strong water solubility and low temperature resistance."

In 1939 Dr. Ralph Peck criticized the Civil Engineering community for taking a bifurcated approach to the prediction of building damage due to subsurface geo-technical works. Specifically, he observed that Geotechnical Engineers concerned themselves only with subsurface issues implying that their results were largely independent of the presence and condition of the structures above. He continued that Structural Engineers charged with risk assessment of buildings approached their work nearly in isolation of below ground activities. Seventy years later, although the state-of-the-art has enabled a better understanding of soil-structure interaction, the reality remains that risk assessment from subsurface construction, is not yet an integrated activity when done on a large-scale basis. To help move beyond this, this paper proposes a new, integrated methodology for preliminary assessment that considers a three-stage process that involves the following: (1) traditional empirical relationships for predicting ground movement from tunneling, (2) recent advances in condition assessments, and (3) architectural designators related to usage and historic preservation listings. The methodology is applied to a study area of nearly 260 buildings in the city center of Dublin Ireland, in an area slated for an upcoming metro. The results are com-pared to the Environmental Impact Statement issued for the official project. Al-though the test case is for tunneling, the approach may be adapted to other subsurface construction activities including excavation and piling.

PART I DENSITY AND ENERGY CHANGES IN COLD-WORKED COPPER IT has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are com-minuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led' to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1. The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chem-ical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the cor-rected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Con-tinuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. This paper describes the behaviour of iron and the methods used for iron control in the nickel matte leaching process. OMG Harjavalta Nickel Oy processes approximately 10 000 t/y of iron, which enters the process with the nickel matte raw material. Iron dissolves and precipitates in several different stages of the leaching process. Compounds like ferric hydroxide, parabutlerite, goethite, hematite and jarosite are found. Iron removal is done within the leaching process, and this means that the dissolution of nickel sets the limiting conditions for iron precipitation. A leach residue consisting mainly of the iron precipitates is neutralized and stacked in the waste pond. When iron is precipitated from concentrated nickel sulphate solution, some nickel is lost by co-precipitation. Recent studies have shown that Ni-Fe ratios less than 1%, attributed to co-precipitation, can be obtained with jarosite precipitates, compared to 2-3% ratios typically found with hematite precipitates. Iron can be precipitated as jarosite under the optimal nickel leaching conditions by adding ammonium sulphate to the feed slurry of the autoclave.

Brief summary of results obtained by a French-Japanese cooperative study on the bottom of trenches around Japan. The geophysical prospection, multi beam echo sounding and direct observation with submersible dives of the trench bottom clarified the details of the subduction of oceanic plates. It may be noted, among many new facts found: 1. The subduction and geologic structure resulted from the process is different according to the nature of subducting oceanic plate, and the geology of the land behind the trench. Thus the Nankai trough characterized by the developpement of accretionary prisms is contrasted to that of the Japan Trench where the basement rocks are exposed on the land side cliff of the trench wall. 2. The compressional tectonic situation prevailing in the trench bottom provokes the venting, along the fissures on the bottom, of water contained in sediments. Hydrocarbons contained in the sediments are comming out with water and give nutrients for bacteria. Clams, tube warms, sea slugs and shrimps are taking these bacteria as their food and biological communities with exceptionally dense population for the deep sea of more than 3000 meters in depth are formed on the field of accretionary prism and wall of the land side cliff. 3. An intense compressional tectonic field resulted from the subduction is inducing the transition from the subduction of oceanic plate to the collision of a part of the plate to the continental plate.

"IntroductionDURING the past half century, the economy of Western Canada was largely centred on agriculture. However, the impact of World War II has led to an acceleration in the development of a variety of natural resources so that, today, Western Canada is experiencing great industrial development. Consequently, the availability •of low-cost energy assumes prime importance. In the final analysis, industrial growth and expansion are intimately linked to the energy resources.Coal ReservesHas Western Canada adequate coal reserves to meet the present accelerating demand for power in the days that lie ahead? This question must be answered before detailed consideration can be given to the probable patterns •by which various energy sources in Western Canada may be expected to meet the expanding demand. Figure 1 indicates the extent and distribution of the Canadian coal reserves, the data having been prepared by Dr. B. R. MacKay for the Royal Commission on Coal in 1946 (1). The amount of readily recoverable coal is listed as one-half the quantities shown on the chart. It is interesting-to note that upwards of 90 per cent •of the Canadian coal reserves .are located in the three most westerly Canadian provinces. It has been estimated that the coal reserves, at the present rate of mining, would be adequate for about 3,000 years. Consequently, it may be concluded that the coal •reserves in Western Canada •are indeed adequate to meet tremendous energy demands for many centuries. When the oil and natural gas have been exhausted, the great coal reserves will still be available."
