Settling of copper, lead, and other metals in slags is an important part of overall recovery of metals, both in primary and secondary operations. The impact of slag reduction on settling is not well known. This is important since the cycle time for slag cleaning can be significantly changed with reduction of slag, through a decrease in slag viscosity and growth of metal/sulphide particles. KPM has worked with a number of primary and secondary recyclers to better understand how reduction of slag can improve overall operation. In this presentation, we describe the type of test work and analysis done and how this information can be used to guide improvements in metal recovery from slags. INTRODUCTION Typically, copper smelter slags contain about 1-2% copper, both in the form of copper and copper sulphide beads and dissolved copper oxide in the slag (converter slags are recycled to the smelter). With the average grade of world copper deposits close to 0.7%, it is practical to recovery copper from these slags. This is done routinely by one of two methods. The first method uses slow cooling in large ladles or beds to grow particles of copper sulphide. The slag is then crushed, milled, and floated for copper recovery. The slow cooling promotes precipitation and growing of the sulphide particles from the solution and then, the slag can then be milled to recover the copper through froth flotation. A consideration of this process includes the energy cost related to grinding, the use of water, capital cost for ladles, and the availability of tailing dumps. At the same time, the retreatment of the Cu concentrate produced in the mill will displace fresh concentrate, which ultimately results in a reduction of the throughput. The second method is the so-called “slag cleaning” and is based on the settling of copper and copper sulphides particles dispersed in the slag. This is achieved by decreasing its viscosity by increasing the slag temperature and reducing the iron spinel solid phases (magnetite) that increase the apparent viscosity of the slag. Typically, the reduction does not extend to the reduction of copper, and soluble copper (mainly as oxide) and fine matte particles remain at concentrations typically at or above 0.5% (Cardona et al., 2011; Cardona, 2011). This is an improvement on 20 years ago when slag was sent to dumps at 1% or less (Demetrio et al., 2000).

On line monitoring and diagnosis systems of process operating performance are becoming an important part of industrial programs, leading to improve process operation and therefore product quality over time. In processes, such as the contact section of a sulphuric acid plant, a large number of input variables, highly correlated, are presented. These characteristics usually pose more difficulties in modelling the process for monitoring and diagnosis purposes. Multivariate statistical projection methods, such as Main Component Analysis, have been proposed to effectively deal with these situations. The application of these ideas to a section of a 2350 MTD sulphuric acid plant, located at the Caletones Smelter, including dry tower, gas blowers, catalytic reactor and S03 absorber processes, is discussed here. A PCA model with eight main components is used for monitoring and diagnosis of more than seventy operating variables. Hottelling's T2 and Q residuals test were used for detecting measurement problems in relevant variables, and for identifying which set of variables were responsible for driving the process outside its normal operating region. Furthermore, considerable information for the correction of the tested operating problems was given by the use of these techniques.

Las unidades sedimentarias mesozoicas que afloran en las subcuencas Apurímac, Vilcabamba y Santo Tomás se encuentran asociadas a una clasificación hidrogeológica (acuíferos o acuitardos fisurados sedimentarios). La caracterización litogeoquímica de estas unidades sedimentarias se basó en los 15 elementos (As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se, Zn, Be, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn, Ti) que utilizan los estudios de línea base geoambiental del Ingenmet. Los resultados han sido comparados con los valores de la UCC (Wedepohl, 1995), lo cual ha permitido caracterizar el comportamiento químico de las unidades hidrogeológicas asociadas a las unidades sedimentarias. Se determinó que son tres los factores que controlan el comportamiento químico de las unidades hidrogeológicas: tiempo geológico, espacio y litología. Estos factores son importantes para la integración de información con los análisis de sedimentos y aguas de los estudios de línea base geoambiental, porque permitirán comprender el origen de posibles zonas anómalas de los elementos descritos en los sedimentos y aguas.

Production scheduling is an integral part of intermediate- and long-range open-pit mine planning, affecting equipment selection, manpower requirements and project economics. The development of mining phases, or pushbacks, is discussed in conjunction with generating the best spatial extraction sequence. An approach to scheduling production from these mining phases is then described. Using computers and a production scheduling algorithm, the impact of cutoff grade and advanced stripping policies can be evaluated through sensitivity studies to maximize the return on project investments.

Most early research on solvent extraction of coal has been concerned with the molecular structure of coal. Although rush work is continuing, practical aspects of the subject also are being emphasized. For example, development of the Pott-Broche extraction process resulted from the discovery of very efficient solvents for the pressure-extraction of coal. Recently, Orchin and Storch reported the use of even more efficient solvents under similar conditions. In addition to the discovery of more effective solvents, the possibility of efficient extraction at atmospheric pressure is obviously of practical interest. H. J. Rose observed that phenanthrene at its atmospheric boiling point readily dispersed 80 percent or more of Pittsburgh-bed bituminous coal. This fact served as the starting point of the present investigation, ill which determination of the chemical specificity of this solvent and the chemical nature of the resulting extracts was undertaken. This paper represents a progress report of the results obtained to date.

Deep-sea mining is in the future perspective of mining industry and it is currently in the technological development phase. The focus of this study is on the electrical power system that provides sufficient energy for the mining equipment at the seafloor, excavating Seafloor Massive Sulfide (SMS) deposits. SMS deposits usually exist at water depths between 1500 m and 4000 m. Despite the similarities of SMS deposits excavation to the open-pit terrestrial mines, more energy is required to drill and crush the ores in the hyperbaric conditions [1], which can be done whether by static trench cutters [1] or by mobile mining crawlers [2]. In addition, the ores vertical transportation by subsea pumps requires several MW electrical power that can be supplied by all-electric subsea motors or hydraulically from water injection motors located on the surface. The power requirements can be fulfilled by an offshore or subsea power network. As the SMS mines are usually in remote locations, the straightforward solution will be an isolated offshore grid mounted on a vessel or platform similar to the most of offshore Oil & Gas projects. These power systems resemble the onshore microgrids for industrial purposes operating in island mode. However, in contrast with the onshore power networks, there are space and weight limitations in offshore infrastructures, which impose the design compactness to be a priority. In addition, having a very high reliability is necessary in the design approach of the offshore projects due to the extraordinary high expenses corresponding to repair and maintenance. The other design criterion is to improve the power system efficiency in order to reduce the size of the power equipment cooling apparatus, operational costs and CO2 emissions produced by diesel/LNG onboard generators. There are a few studies considering power system distribution for seafloor mining industry. Among them, [3] has investigated the AC and DC alternatives for SMS mining in 2400 m water depth by considering Solwara 1 project scenario introduced by Nautilus Minerals Inc. [2]. In this study, a power system design tool will be presented taking into account various water depth, power consumption levels, different distribution configurations (AC and DC) and the aforementioned design criteria.

If the ordinary wet method be attempted for silver-bullion containing tin, much trouble is experienced, varying with the amount of tin present. Even with a percentage as low as 0.05, the end-point is masked by a persistent turbidity, while with amounts ranging from 0.5 per cent. upward, the determination of the exact end-point is impossible, owing to the finely divided or colloidal metastannic acid resisting all efforts to cause it to settle, or to give a clear supernatant liquid. The object of the following experiments was to seek a remedy for these difficulties, and to find the conditions whereby the Gay Lussac method might be applied directly to these bullions. Material containing tin is met with frequently in bullion from Mexico or Bolivia; and tin is carried (sometimes in large quantities) in jewelers' sweeps. 1. A bullion was prepared containing Ag, 74; Cu, 25; and Sn, 1 per cent. A weighed amount was treated by the humid assay-method as if it were an ordinary bullion free from tin. A study was made in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine of factors affecting gas ignition by a cutoff explosive charge. Experiments showed that, although gas could be ignited under some circumstances, the probability under normal mining conditions would be low. The use of permissible explosives, relatively short-delay intervals in firing adjacent holes, blasting to a 6-inch kerf, and reasonable care in the placement of the holes favor safe blasting and are current practice in mining. The experiments also showed that the weight of the charge is not a primary factor in the ignition of gas by a cutoff charge. The quenching action of a first charge on the igniting action of a second was verified in a supplementary study. Related experiments have shown that gas at the face may be ignited by a single charge of explosive when fired with a light coal burden. Permissible explosives were less hazardous under these conditions than nonpermissible explosives. The frequency of gas ignition in cutoff and single-charge experiments increased as the linear distance between the sheared face and the opposing mine rib increased.

Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a training module to educate both new, inexperienced miners as well as veterans on important issues related to self-rescue and escape procedures. These include: (1) physical and environmental conditions that can be encountered in a mine after a major explosion, (2) knowledge of emergency meeting locations and escape routes, (3) the importance of using self-rescuers, even in seemingly clear air, to keep the lungs isolated from contaminants, and (4) why miners should not go off to look for others who are missing. In addition, the module may stimulate miners to think about and discuss mine explosions and the devastating effects of such an event.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of eight metals subjected to fully reversed cyclic strain ranging from 0.2 to 50 pct were investigated at room temperature. Strain-hardening characteristics unique to the interna1 structure of a particular metal were found. Complete removal of the strain-hardening effects resulting from prior deformation was brought about by subsequent cyclic strain. Further support for the validity of the inverse relationship between the plastic strain range and the square root of the number of cycles for failure is given. THE resistance of materials to cyclic plastic strain is of interest both from a fundamental and practical point of view. It is now a well-accepted fact that fatigue failure in metals is a consequence of the localized slip deformation which occurs within the individual crystals of metal.'-' Hence the failure process should be strongly dependent upon the magnitude of the gross cyclic plastic deformation of the metal under conditions where this is a measurable quantity. Therefore, an experimental investigation of metals in which the cyclic plastic strain is the independent variable should shed new light on some of the basic aspects of the problem. From the practical point of view, there are many uses for information relating to the cyclic strain resistance of metals. One is the case of thermal stress fatigue where fatigue failure can occur as a consequence of a com- paratively few cycles of thermally induced mechanical deformation. Another is the mechanical working of metals where large cyclic strains are employed. In recent years several publications have appeared relating to the cyclic-strain resistance of metals,8-11 dealing mostly with the fracture aspects where the temperature is cycled simultaneously with the mechanical strain. Some work has been reported on the cyclic-strain resistance of metals at constant temperature, again oriented more toward the fracture aspects of the problem than the deformation aspects. 12-16 The present research investigation was undertaken to obtain information regarding the deformation characteristics of several metals whose structure-property relationships were simple and straightforward under conditions of both cyclic and monotonic strain. It has been shown for example that under cyclic-strain conditions some materials will strain harden, while other materials, particularly cold-worked structures, strain soften and these effects required further clarification.8,17-19 It was also de-

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

DISPERSION hardening as an alloying process has aroused increasing interest in the past few years. This alloying procedure, in which an insoluble phase is dispersed randomly through a metal or alloy, is believed to be especially suited for the attainment of creep strength at elevated temperatures since the dispersed phase is metallurgically stable. Another advantage is that the physical properties of the matrix phase, such as electrical conductivity, remain relatively unaffected by alloying. These two characteristics resulted in interest in the applicability of dispersion hardening to copper and copper alloys. A study of copper alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods has shown some strengthening from oxide dispersions.' However, powder metallurgy processing would not be economical for large scale production of dispersion hardened copper-base alloys. Therefore, the research described in this article was initiated to examine methods of forming dispersion alloys which would not require powder metallurgy processing. If powder metallurgy processing is to be avoided, a method must be found by which the dispersion material can be introduced into and dispersed through the melt before casting. When the dispersed phase is an oxide or similar nonmetallic, it is extremely difficult to form a satisfactory liquid: solid dispersion since successful mixing requires that the melt wet the dispersed phase. It is almost impossible to force a nonwetted particle beneath the melt surface. This difficulty can be avoided, however, if the oxide particles are produced in molten copper by reaction within the melt. The problem would then reduce to maintaining randomness until solidification. Four procedures were considered for producing an oxide particle within molten copper by reaction. In all cases, the intent was to react oxygen (0) with a reactive metal (X) to form an oxide (XO) within the copper melt. These reactions were as follows: 1) (Cu-X), + (O)g (Cu)1 + (XO)S [1] 2) (Cu-X)1 + (Cu2O)s (Cu)x + (XO)S [2] 3) (Cu-OK)1 + (Cu-X)1 (Cu)1+(XO)9 [3] 4) (Cu-OK)1 +(X)s (Cu)1 +(XO)s [4] The reactions were carried out in an 8-lb melt of 99.98 pct Cu maintained in the vicinity of 2200oF by induction heating. Where possible the amount of the reactants was controlled to give 1 to 5 vol pct oxide. Mechanical stirring during the reaction period was used to minimize agglomeration of the reaction product. The presence of a reaction product was determined metallographically by study of an ingot cast from the melt at the end of the reaction period. Reaction [I] was studied by dissolving aluminum in the melt followed by forcing oxygen through the melt. The melts became quite sluggish during the reaction period suggesting that A12O3 was formed. However, the reaction product rose out of the melt rapidly, possibly due to the flushing action of the oxygen stream, and little dispersed phase was formed. Reaction [2] was examined by dissolving aluminum, silicon, or nickel i; the melt and then adding Cu20 (melting point 2250F). This procedure was unsuccessful. THIS paper is an effort to explain in a simple manner the fundamental principles involved in examining a clay deposit for both quantity and quality and in operating a clay mine, either open-pit or underground, so that the best quality of finished material can be made from the raw material available. The writer is aware that what is recommended in this paper is everyday practice in many refractories plants and in some other heavy-clay products plants, but observations made while visiting practically every clay mine in Ohio have convinced him that the practices herein discussed are not as widely used as their importance warrants. It is true that the problem of mining for quality is more acute in refractories plants than in most heavy-clay products plants, yet some of the latter are finding it profitable to pay more than ordinary attention to the selection and blending of their raw materials. It is hoped that this short paper may prove helpful to some who are now finding it difficult to produce a uniform product of as high quality as their clay deposit seems to warrant. The coordination of the work of the clay mine or pit with the manufacturing plant, to the end that the best product possible be made from the raw material available, presupposes a rather intimate knowledge of the clay deposit. The knowledge must include not only information of the amount of clay-available but also rather detailed information about both vertical and horizontal variations in quality of the clay. This information should cover three things: quality, quantity, and location.

"The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the behaviour of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10 m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. The newest part of the lower part of the Q-chart gives more information on required support compared to older Q-system versions. The RRS can be described as a three part composite material with the 3rd component being the reinforced concrete beam (with no fibers) and with steel rebars that are placed in groups and sprayed with pneumatically applied shotcrete in layers. The RRS usually have a total thickness varying between 0.20 and 0.50 m and a width between 0.25 and 0.60 m respectively. They are placed at different distances along the tunnel axis depending on the rock mass quality.In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. This was done by writing a FISH subroutine which is implemented in the discontinuous numerical code Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) that takes into account the characteristics of the reinforced beam (height, width, number of steel rebars, and spacing) in the calculation process. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and in situ stresses (?H/?v = 0.5), and changing only the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam.The results show that: a) the S(fr) is almost overloaded in the first 4 hours after application in both tunnels; b) on the S(fr) and steel rebars, the stresses, axial and shear loads, as well as moments are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are increasing with time. The observed reduction in stresses and loads in both the S(fr) and reinforced beam is surprising. A possible explanation is that tunnel arches are self-supported to a lesser extent as time progresses due to redistribution of stresses in the nearby rock mass through the radial bolts. The loads in radial bolts are increasing by almost 25%. This can be seen from the overall results as we observe an increase in maximum principal stresses, displacements, shear displacements along joints and hydraulic apertures compared to tunnel baseline that has no support of any kind."

The leaching kinetics of a zinc concentrate in autoclave reactors were studied. A sample of concentrate from Bolivia, with typical mineralogical characteristics of the Andes region, was used. A concentrate containing 49% zinc and 145 ppm of silver from Minera Viacha was characterized chemically and mineralogically (atomic absorption, X-ray diffraction, and SEM microscopy) and tested in bench scale reactors. Two types of autoclave batch reactors were used at 40 bars of oxygen pressure and three levels of temperature (150°C, 200°C and 250°C). The solid to solution leaching ratio was 1:10 (10% sulphuric acid concentration). The effect of the particle size of the concentrate on the leaching kinetics was studied (P80: 145 and 45 µm). Iron from the leaching solution was removed by precipitation by increasing the pH in order to generate a clean solution for zinc electrowinning. The zinc solution was used to evaluate the feasibility of cathode production at the laboratory scale. Zinc extractions with higher liberation (P80 = 45 µm) reached up to 98%. Ground concentrate with finer sizes resulted in agglomeration and the use of dispersing agents did not improve slurry mixing. The leaching solution contained 55 g/L zinc and 7 g/L iron; it was purified by precipitating iron. The precipitation was evaluated using sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide. In the first case, a colloidal suspension of ferric salts was formed while in the second case, different iron compounds were precipitated. The precipitate obtained with ammonium hydroxide had better filtering properties. Electrowinning was carried out using two types of cathodes (stainless steel and aluminium) and solutions purified with ammonium hydroxide. Zinc cathodes formed on stainless steel presented a better physical quality than those formed on aluminium.

High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

The problem of stability of the development working at the great depths of coal winning is of great seriousness. Numerous researches of the problem were carried out in the USSR, the results of which determined that raising of resistance of existing support will not lead to a considerable rise of working output. It is necessary to try to find ways at the expense of heightening the support ability of rock massif. For these purposes it is necessary to direct it correctly and in proper time. While carrying the development working the most intensive deformations of rock occur at a depth of 30m from the entry face. The zone of destruction of rock around the work is realised here for 60 to 70 percent. These facts show that in influence zone of entry face a kind of embryo of the working steadiness is forming, which greatly determines its following conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to begin direction of mining pressure around the work directly in a face.Complex research of the mechanism was carried out starting with the effect of moving face upon the surrounding rock massif. It was ascertained, that the zone influenced by the face is a section of 5 equivalent diameters of the work by the length within which the rock of the sides, roof and floor, experience the cyclical influence of stresses at the time of cyclical shift of the face. The elastoplastec deformation is occurring with it at the moments of rock removal and the deformation of creeping takes place at such intervals.
