As condições ótimas desse processo envolvem diversas variáveis, como vazão de oxigênio, distancia banho lança (DBL), número de furos para a saída de oxigênio na lança, entre outros fatores. Através de uma análise visual da penetração do jato e do volume movimentado, foram analisados os comportamentos para cada configuração de sopro entre diferentes combinações de bicos multifuros (3 a 6 furos), para uma distância banho lança (DBL) e vazão constantes. A análise dos parâmetros de interação entre o sopro e o banho líquido composta pelas frações de metal e escória, representados respectivamente por água e óleo de parafina é o principal objetivo deste trabalho. Foi necessário desenvolver nova metodologia para a determinação da penetração assim como proposta de nova fórmula e ajuste da constante empírica, fator K. As maiores penetrações foram alcançadas com os bicos de 3 e 4 furos. Para a configuração de 6 furos, foram encontrados os menores valores de penetração e maior volume de zonas de baixa movimentação em relação aos parâmetros estabelecidos.

THE speed of drilling rock has become an impor-tant factor in mining operations, while the place-ment of holes, kind, and quantity of explosive used. are equally important. These are a function of the rock hardness and toughness. Both of these fac-tors must be considered in compiling a table that will enable a mine operator or engineer to estimate drilling speeds in a given rock, knowing its hardness, and from its toughness, the dynamite required. The hardness of a homogeneous rock may be defined as its resistance to a penetrating medium, such as a drill-steel bit, and toughness, its resistance to with-stand rupture by the tearing apart of its minerals or parts of the same mineral. Rock hardness, as it has here been defined, is a function of the hardness of the component grains composing it, as well as grain size, shape, arrangement, and binding minerals. Rock tough-ness depends on substantially the same factors, but is measured by a totally different method. The units in which rock hardness is usually ex-pressed are either relative values or alphabetical desig-nations which carry no definite quantitative meaning. R. M. Raymond has suggested the measurement of com-posite rock hardness, based on mineral hardness as ob-tained by the Moh scale. This is done by multiplying the percentage of each mineral in a rock by the Moh mineral hardness and dividing by 100. These values convey a clearer conception in the minds of men in-terested in rock work -and are the basis of the units used in Tables 1 and 2. The hardness of rocks as it has been variously de-fined may be determined by different methods. The first method is one in which the proportionate average of the hardness of minerals making up a rock is the basis for classification. The other factors of grain size, shape, arrangement, and binding power are not considered.

On Nov. 11, 1909, M. Alexandre Pourcel, of Paris, France, upon the proposal of a large number of distinguished members, and the unanimous recommendation of the Council, was elected by the Board of Directors an Honorary Member of the Institute. M. Pourcel has devoted forty-three years to the metallurgy of iron and steel ; and the work which he did between thirty and forty years ago constitutes an important part of the founda¬tion of the practice of to-day. Among his striking contribu¬tions are : (1) his perfection, in 1869, of the manufacture of high-grade ferro-manganese in a carbon-lined open-hearth furnace, instead of the costly crucibles previously used; (2) his discovery, in 1874, of the method of making solid steel cast¬ings; (3) his manufacture, in 1875, of ferro-manganese and silico-spiegel in the blast-furnace; and (4) his anticipation, in 1875, of modern American blast-furnace practice, by the pro¬duction, in a very small furnace, of Bessemer pig containing 2.5 per cent. of silicon, from a burden yielding only 46 per cent. of iron, and with a consumption, per ton of pig, of only 1,8401b. of coke, containing 15 per cent. of ash. These brilliant pioneer achievements, together with his contributions to cur¬rent technical literature, won for him the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute ; the great" medal of honor," which is the highest award of the French Society of Mineral Industry, and other gold medals, as well as the distinction of honorary membership of the Comité des Forges de France, which was conferred upon him in 1891. In recent years, M. Pourcel has been instrumental, as consulting engineer of the Société de Commentry-Fourchambault, at Decazeville, France, in an extraordinary development of the manufacture of special steels. The Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the northern Cape Province of South Africa hosts high grade (>60 per cent Fe) hematitic and specularitic iron and manganese mineralisation. The mineralisation is primarily exposed along the western margin or in the central part of a major interference fold structure known as the Maremane dome. The bulk of South AfricaÆs iron ore production is currently provided by two active mines, Kumba Resources megaton Sishen iron ore mine on the northern end of the dome, and the smaller Assmang Beeshoek mine on the southern closure. The undeveloped Sishen South deposit, which contains ~400 Mt of high-grade hematite ore, is located approximately 9 km towards the southwest of Postmasburg. It forms a linear extension of the Beeshoek mine and as such contains comparable laminated, breccia and conglomeratic iron mineralisation. The Transvaal Supergroup sediments were deposited in two distinct fault-controlled basins on the Archean Kaapvaal craton. Basement rocks in the western Griqualand West basin are formed by a carbonate platform sequence (Campbellrand Subgroup), which is overlain by a thick sequence of banded iron formation of the Asbesheuwels Subgroup. A major unconformity separates these rocks from the red-bed Gamagara Formation, which is correlated with the base of the Olifantshoek Supergroup. Diamictites and lavas of the Postmasburg Group have been thrust over these units from the west. The mineralisation process is related to regional scale supergene iron enrichment of Kuruman banded iron formations along the unconformity. During regional tectonism associated with the Kheis orogeny (2400 - 1700 Ma) the Maremane dome was uplifted, and the basal dolomite units thus exposed to erosion and karstification. The overlying banded iron formations collapsed into karst sinkhole structures where leaching of silica and enrichment of hematite occurred. Although the exact mechanism of the mineralising process remains unclear, karstification preserved components of the original concordant laminated and massive ores. These ores were subsequently eroded and deposited as conglomeratic and gritty ores down-dip of the Maremane dome in alluvial fan systems. A thin veneer of recent calcrete or Tertiary Kalahari clay beds masks the subsurface geology and most of the orebodies, thus ground geophysical gravity surveys proved excellent exploration tools to penetrate the surficial cover. These surveys were used extensively for delineation drilling and to deduce the subsurface geology and structural development of the area. Finally Sishen South orebodies were modelled with ModelVision software in an attempt to obtain an exploration template for the surrounding area.

"Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) entrusted to implement Monorail Systems in various parts of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with the objective to supplement the present transport system in MMR. The stretch of Monorail is starting from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (SGMC) and extending up to Chembur Railway Station, divided into 2 phases. Construction of Phase 1 (Chembur to Wadala Depot) is complete and Phase 2 (Wadala Depot to SGMC) is under construction.Monorail runs on prestressed girder (guide beam) of span ranging from 20m to 28m supported on pier founded upon group of end bearing piles embedded in rock, pile group ranging from 2-4 piles of diameter 1000mm each.For the purpose of site characterization, geo-technical investigations were carried out along the alignment of Monorail system as mentioned above. These investigations included field and laboratory tests. The subsurface strata mainly consist of silty sand, gravel, underlain by marine clay extending up to stronger basalt rock with volcanic breccia. Overburden consisting of mainly marine clay ranging from 5.5m to 11m at all locations within the influence zone of settlement.The existing rigid pavement along of Sion-Koliwada and Anik-Wadala were constructed about 5 years prior to the construction of Monorail piers. Before laying the rigid pavement, to improve the geotechnical strength of subsoil (mainly marine clay), ground improvement using stone columns was undertaken by MMRDA. In light of limited right of way, the Monorail piers have been constructed in the median portion of the road. The line became operational on February 2014, in few months it was noticed that, in the vicinity of the Monorail piers, along Sion-Koliwada link and Anik-Wadala link, the Road Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) panels adjacent to the Monorail piers started showing distress in form of nonuniform settlement of the concrete panels.Effect of pile foundation on pavements/PQC slab distress and possible causes of distress were investigated. Initially the distress was thought to be upheaval of monorail pier cap, but further investigations revealed the same to be soil settlement occurring over time. This paper describes the investigation carried out for identifying the cause of this settlement."

A model of the ISF is described. which reproduces with accuracy the "normal" operation of three industrial furnaces. The model, written in Fortran, is based on detailed heat and material balances, and the concept that the ascending gases reach equilibrium with zinc oxide and with the water-gas shift reaction. "Solution loss" of carbon in the lower shaft, and partial reoxidation of zinc vapor in the upper shaft are also essential features. For prediction of furnace behavior under altered operating conditions (blast rate, temperature, moisture content, oxygen enrichment, or injection of oil or coal through the tuyeres) the model modifies the heat loss, temperature of slag and bullion, amount of reoxidation in the upper shaft and the condenser efficiency to reflect the altered operating parameters. Model predictions for such operating conditions are in reasonable agreement with plant experience.

ELECTROREFINING Canadian 1,023,691 -Removal of bismuth from slime filtrate in the Betts process refining of lead. The filtrate is subjected to electrolysis in a cell having an anode of crude lead and a cathode of refined lead under operating conditions to preferentially deposit bismuth on the cathode. The development of X-100 and X-120 linepipe steels was investigated using a series of low-carbon Mo-Nb-B steels. The laboratory steels were vacuum melted and processed using advanced thermomechanical processing (TMP) philosophies. Prior to the laboratory hot-rolling experiments, the grain coarsening temperature, the conventional T95 and T5 start-stop recrystallization temperatures and the transformation behavior of y were studied using a computer-controlled high temperature deformation MTS-458 and a Theta-IV High Speed dilatometer systems. The results from these experiments provided the guidelines for the design of the laboratory hot-rolling TMP processing experiments. The mechanical properties of the experimental steels showed yield strengths in the range 700-850 MPa and CVN impact properties of over 80 J at -20°C. The best balance of mechanical properties was obtained by using CCR+DQ+Tempering treatments. The major microstructural features responsible for the observed mechanical properties in order of importance were: a) substructural refinement associated with lower bainite, b) dislocation strengthening, c) fine recrystallized ferrite, and d) small amounts of retained austenite. Fine Nb(C,N) precipitates formed in ferrite were observed, however their contribution to the strength was minimum. Most of the Nb(C,N) precipitation took place in austenite. This precipitation was used to exert microstructural control of austenite during hot rolling. The physical metallurgy and optimum TMP to achieve the mechanical properties are detailed in this paper.

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

INTRODUCTION A DISTILLATION process offers one of the most effective methods of refining metals. Its use is particularly attractive in the case of reactive metals which are not readily treated by pyrometallurgical or electrolytic methods. The 1ow vapour pressure of most metals severely restricts the applicability of the disti1lation process and only one or two metals may be effectively treated under atmospheric pressure at a reasonable temperature. If operations are carried out under reduced pressure several additional metals may be effectively distilled. Table I shows the vapour pressure of a number of metals together with a value of the free energy of formation of their ?oxides. Zinc and cadmium head the list and for many years? they have .been effectively refined by distillation. Sodium, magnesium, and calcium follow in descending order, and they may be distilled readily in vacuo and with difficulty at atmospheric pressure. Sodium, which is not of great metallurgical interest, is not considered. Magnesium has recently been produced in considerable tonnages by distillation methods ( 3). This paper describes the vacuum distillation of magnesium and calcium, their separation from each other, and their separation from less volatile impurities.

SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles L range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola 1 described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes2 in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker3 was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. This plant utilized a system of rolls for breaking the coal and revolving screens for sizing. The plant was driven by a steam engine. It could handle

I. 2965) the authors gave references to articles covering (1) the effect of temperature on the equilibrium 2C0 - CO2 + C, (2) experimental work that has been done on learning the gases existing at various elevations in columns of burning coke, (3) extension of this work to the tuyere zone of an iron blast furnace, and (4) the paper itself gave similar analyses of the gaseous oxides of carbon at the tuyere zone of a lead blast furnace and showed the temperatures obtaining there. There were also references in the above paper to the literature on (5) how the lead compounds likely to be present might be ex¬pected to react. A careful study of the original articles selected as references will give a good background for the present work.The following very brief recapitulation may be convenient before considering the tuyere zone in the blast furnaces at Kellogg. The ""producer gas reaction"" (1) of course goes to the left at increasingly higher rates of speed with increase of temperature. When air is blown upward through a grate and a column of hot fine coke alone, oxygen as such penetrates from some 2 to 3 inches only, under the conditions obtaining as to the amount of surface exposed per unit volume of air. When air is blown at about 20 pounds pressure through the tuyeres in the side of an iron blast furnace into a column of coarse coke (plus furnace charge) it may penetrate for 30 inches before the oxygen is entirely used, burning first largely to CO2. Within wide limits, the rate of feeding air into the furnace has practically little effect on the composition of the gases obtaining in the fuel bed of fine coke, this being true particularly of the gases leaving the bed. Some 10.5 inches above the grate the gases contained 22 per cent of CO by volume, and a little further up the CO2 had practically disappeared. This gave the familiar three zones in both the iron blast furnace and the gas producer; in order of entry of the air, in the first the oxygen burned largely to CO2, in the second the CO2 was reduced to CO, and the third the CO2 was practically absent. In the furnaces at Tooele, conditions were somewhat erratic but the first two zones were present, there being, however, no zone in which CO2 and 02 were both entirely absent."

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the "gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ultimate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficacy of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity show a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate of gas injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.

THE recent and rapid development of the physics of engineering materials at temperatures as low as that of liquid air and as high is that of the electric are, has drawn renewed attention to the absence of tables, properly printed and spaced, for the convenient and accurate translation of temperature from centigrade to Fahrenheit scales and vice versa. It is to be noted that the Fahrenheit scale is the almost universal usage in foundries and shops in the United States, though the laboratories of the same works employ the centigrade notation. The growing use of the electric furnace in Germany and France calls for much American citation all in centigrade high temperatures, and while the arithmetical calculation is simple, it becomes burdensome when often repeated. I have been surprised at the numerous reprints of Table I. from centigrade to Fahrenheit degrees, first privately printed for personal use, which have been made by works, blue-prints, test-books, and technical journals, and I hope that Table II., from Fahrenheit to centigrade degrees, will be equally useful.

This report summarizes the principal activities and results of 15 years of research by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, on methane control in coal mines. This research has investigated fundamental factors regarding the occurrence and movement of methane in coal beds, removal of methane prior to mining, and control of methane during mining. The report includes a bibliography listing the more than 150 publications resulting from the Bureau's methane control program as well as numerous other references, a section on methane recovery and use, a look at the upcoming Bureau of Mines research program, and a brief review of methane drainage practices in other coal-producing countries.

"Refratechnik, a leading German refractory company, acquired a majority shareholding in Baymag in 1979. This acquisition included the mining rights for a magnesite deposit of exceptionally high purity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.The deposit, situated in the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, is of Cambrian age and has ore reserves of 50 million m. t. of magnesite. The Baymag magnesite deposit is one of the purest in the world. The deposit was opened up and mining commenced in early 1982. Production of various caustic calcined magnesia products in a rotary kiln operation in Exshaw, Alberta, was started in mid-1982. The product application ranges from pulp and paper production, to the chemical industry, and to animal feed supplements. Since the end of 1983, Baymag has produced high-quality refractory grade fused magnesium oxide f or specialty applications in the steel industry.IntroductionAlthough magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth and forms about 2.06% of the earth's crust, common knowledge about magnesium and especially magnesium oxide (MgO) as an industrial mineral is not widespread. The reason might be that, with the exception of magnesium metal as the element, magnesia products are not generally sold as final products to end-users, but rather are needed for the production of final products such as steel, cement, paper, etc. Therefore, some general comments are given about the different sources of MgO, the different products, world production and consumption , before Baymag specifics are addressed. Magnesium metal will not be discussed in this paper."

This paper3/ is one of a limited series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a more extensive series on mining and preparation methods in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes ventilation methods and practices at the anthracite collieries in the Northern field of the anthracite measures of Pennsylvania as obtained by personal inspections in twenty of the larger collieries during 1933 and 1934 and from supplementary information furnished then and later by operating officials. This field is one of the four major divisions - Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern - into which the anthracite deposits of Pennsylvania are naturally divided, and constitutes, in plan, a slightly bowed lens, about 60 miles long, and that extends from Forest City on the north through Scranton, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Nanticoke to Shickshinny on the south with a. maximum width of 6 miles. It is the oldest and largest producing field of the four, and has produced continuously from 1S09. The total anthracite production for the State reached a peak of about 100,000,000 tons a year in 1917, but in recent years production has averaged about 50,000,000 tons, of which somewhat over half comes from this Northern field. The operations of three of the largest producing organizations in the State are almost wholly included in this field, as well as about half of the operations of two others of the six largest producers, It comprises the first 14 of the 25 numerically designated anthracite State inspection districts.
