In order to obtain values of angle of shearing resistance and initial resistance for McMurray oil sand for use in general design calculations, the shear strength of this oil sand was measured in a controlled strain type tester, modified so that the rate of deformation could be varied between 0.01725 and 0.1869 inches per minute. Effect of temperature was investigated by adapting the equipment to operate at both 71 ° and 185 °F. The data are reported in terms of angle of shearing resistance and initial resistance for varying rates of deformation, composition and temperature. While the main sets of results reported here were obtained at a bulk density range of 108.7- 109.5 lb. / cu. ft., some results were obtained at a bulk density range of 101-102 lb. / cu. ft. Analysis of varance tables have been drawn up from the results obtained from least squares correlations and significance tests applied. It was concluded that oil content and temperature were significant variables for the degree of shear strength developed by the oil sand; increase of oil content and decrease of temperature each cause an increase in shear strength. The bulk density range 108.7 to 109.5 lb./cu. ft. gave angles of shearing resistance from 30° to 40° and initial resistance values of 0.37 p.s.i. to 0.85 p.s.i. For the bulk density range 101 to 102 lb. / cu. ft., lower values of shear strength were obtained, indicating that compaction density was also of importance

"One of the ways to increase the bearing capacity of a piled foundation is to take into account soil resistance in the base of the raft. Piled raft is similar to shallow foundation and can transfer significant part of the load into the base. It allows reducing number of piles in the foundation or shortening their length. As a result building terms and foundation costs reduce considerably. However, nowadays in Belarus there is no reliable and suitable in design practice methods of calculation of piled-raft foundations. In order to devise such methods we have analyzed the results of piled foundation tests fulfilled by various authors up to date and have carried out series of field and laboratory investigations in Minsk. The most important results of the investigations are provided in the article. Methods of analysis of piled-raft foundations are described.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations of late years are used extensively in connection with the increased number of storeys and load increment on the soil. Often pile foundations are applied in comparative favorable ground conditions at the surface of the base. In such cases the increase of the bearing capacity of foundations and the reduction of construction cost are questions of primary importance for designers. One of the ways to increase the bearing capacity of a piled foundation is to take into account soil resistance in the base of the raft. Piled raft is similar to shallow foundation and can transfer significant part of the load into the base. It allows reducing number of piles in the foundation or shortening their length. However, nowadays there is no reliable and suitable in design practice methods of calculation pile foundations with bearing rafts. In order to devise such methods we have analyzed the results of piled foundation tests fulfilled by various authors up to date and have carried out series of laboratory and field investigations.Long before the constitution of the first piled-raft foundations in the Soviet Union there were attempts to consider soil resistance in the basis of isolated and strip grillages. Such bases can be considered as separate fragments of the piled-raft foundation. Prof. A. A. Bartolomey had tested more than 70 pile foundations of natural size in different ground conditions. The length of piles was 3 12 m (?????????? 1995). The observed results show that the raft carries about 10 12% of the total load applied when length of piles is over 9 m and space between piles is a=3d. Bearing capacity of the raft is about 35 40% when the length of piles is 5 8 m and a=6d. Prof. Golubkov has tested 2 prismatic piles (cross section: 350x350 mm, L=3800 m) and 2 pyramidal piles (cross section: head - 600x600 mm, foot – 100x100 mm, L=3000 m). One of the piles was tested with a raft and the other one without a raft. Significant influence of the raft on total bearing capacity was determined, the more the settlement was the more it influenced on the raft. Bearing capacity of the raft was 27,5% in foundation with prismatic pile and 42% with pyramidal pile (???????? et al. 1971)."

Outokumpu introduced Flash Flotation in the early l 980's for the recovery of floatable material from grinding circuits. The devel­opment came as a result of surveys made in the company's own concentrators, initiated to find ways of improving recoveries with increasingly complex and lower grade feeds. Hydrocyclones make a separation on the basis of particle size and mass, resulting in the "over collection" of fine grained, high S.G. particles. Minerals such as pentlandite, galena and gold are easily caught in the circulating load around the mill until they are overground and rendered more difficult to collect. In the case of downstream flotation this may simply involve a reduction in the rate coefficient due to the finer sizes or, as is commonly experienced in gold operations, the mate­rial is slimed and coated onto non-floating gangue and is eventual­ly lost to tails. At the time of Outokumpu's plant surveys, it was a relatively common practice, particularly in Pb operations, to have a flotation section fed directly from the secondaiy mill discharge. This is called unit flotation and certainly provided an improvement but very high wear rates and frequent sanding out of the cells was com­mon. The development of the SkimAir® Flash Flotation cell by Outokumpu provided a subtle but quite dramatic departure from the unit cell approach. Now it was possible to feed cyclone under­flow into a special purpose-built flotation machine and recover a final grade concentrate from the grinding circuit (see Figure I). The cell was designed to handle the coarse circulating load, per­mitting the coarsest fractions to be short-circuited back to the mill and retain the floatable sizes for a nominal time of 30 seconds to several minutes. The short retention time was possible largely due to the relatively clean content of the cyclone underflow stream. This means that the fine gangue is not present except in small quan­tities and most of the fine to mid-size paiiicles are higher S.G. and more likely represent valuable mineral. This condition provides for very high rate coefficients. Typical operations would recover 40-60% of the valuable mineral in this fashion and improvements in recovery were typically from 2-5% for sulphide minerals to the 5-20% range for gold and silver.

[The ventilation of development faces in mines for diluting gas or dust concentrations aid in hot mines for providing air-motion cooling affect, by fan-pipe units discharging high-velocity streams of air close to the face, is an important phase of mitre ventilation. The effectiveness of such units depends largely on the air-flow distribution between-the pipe discharge said the face, a subject on which little definite information is available. A study of the air, flow from grills into rooms3/ has provided sore basic data, but under conditions so different from mine fan-pipe installations in development ends that tae data to are of doubtful application to mine installa¬tions, owing to differences in air-flow conditions. The purposes of this report is to present and discuss the results of an initial series of tests of a general investigation designed to yield definite laws and design data for the discharge of fan-pine lines in nines. The s series was planned to yield preliminary data on the effects of velocity of discharge, size and shape of tripe, and adjacent calls on the air-flow distribution. Tents were made on 10-inch pine with seven different end conditions and one change of wall condition. Changes in size and shape of discharge wore made b y short transformation pieces directly at the discharge end, with the result that effects due to contraction and expansion of the flow, which proved to be of much greater importance than was expected, totally obscured any normal effects cue to size anti shape. At the Steptoe metallurgical plant, where ore of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is beneficiated, a small copper-leaching annex has been in operation treating flue dust from roasting-furnace dust chambers, together with a siliceous oxidized ore. This leaching plant was designed to obviate smelting low-grade siliceous flue dust, which interfered with the operation of the reverberatories by forming a blanket on the charge. The major portion of the copper content of the flue dust accumulating in the upper chambers of the roaster flue, and at the stack, is water soluble, and also contains much free sulphuric acid and soluble sulphates. It was found that sufficient acid could be obtained by mixing this material with water to provide a lixiviant for leaching the siliceous copper ore mentioned. This was the sole source of the lixiviant used in the operation to be described. An analysis of the flue dust showed it to be composed as follows : Per Cent. Synthesis of hydrocarbons by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in a hot-gas- recycle system was demonstrated to be technically feasible. This project was undertaken, by the Bureau of Mines, to determine if the system was operable and to ascertain the optimum conditions for the production of gasoline. Carbon steel turnings packed with a void volume from 88 to 90 pct. were satisfactory catalysts, but steel catalysts with greater void volume, either turnings or steel wool, were not as active. Good temperature control with a pressure drop of less than 0.5 pounds per square inch (p.s,i,) per foot of catalyst bed of turnings was obtained by operating with a recycle to fresh feed ratio of 20 and by splitting the total gas flaw and injecting portions into the reactor at different entry ports.

Universities and colleges in three countries, Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and/or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral industry organizations cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered has been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration, including, but not limited to, geological skills, geochemical skills, environmental skills and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will be discussed.

High-temperature heat contents of InAs and GaAs were measured over the temperature range 400°K to temperatures above the melting points using a di-phenyl ether drop calorimeter. Smoothed values of the thermal properties have been derived and tabulated at even temperature interuals . The heats of fusion of InAs and GaAs were determined as, respectively, 8790 ± 200 and 12,590 ± 300 cal per g-atom at the respective melting points of 1210º ± and 1513º ± 1°K, yielding entropies of fusion of 7.26 * 0.16 and 8.32 ± 0.20 cal perºK per g-atom, respectively. A general discussion of the thermal properties of III-V com-pounds is given. THE low-temperature heat capacities of InAs and GaAs have been determined by Piesbergen.1Using a dynamic temperature modulation technique, Miller2 has determined the heat capacities of the compounds as well as GaSb and Ge between room temperature and 650°K; however, it has been observed that values determined by drop calorimetry for GaSb3 and for germanium4 are consistently about 5 pct lower than Miller's results. Cox and Pool10 report values for the heat content of InAs and GaAs and the heat of fusion of InAs. No value for the heat of fusion of GaAs appears to have been previously reported. This paper reports results of high-temperature heat content investigations of InAs and GaAs measured in the range 400" to above 1500°K employing a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. These results, together with our previous results on III-Sb compounds3 as well as heat-content measurements5 of solid InP and Gap, are used in a general discussion of these compounds. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES High-purity samples of the compounds, stoichio-metric to ±0.1 at. pct, were supplied in the form of crushed crystal fragments by Dr. Carl Thurmond of the Bell Telephone Laboratories. Direct observation of the charge shape and its motion in industrial mills are not possible, it is then customary to use transparent end, small-scale mills (i.e., model mills) to determine the charge trajectory directly by visualization methods. Because of a short length of the model mills, the end-wall effects could introduce a significant bias on the observed charge trajectories and shape. The shorter the mill, the stronger the bias. This could be due to some material bridging between the end walls. In this research, the end-wall effects were investigated by gradually increasing the model mill length and analysing the charge trajectory and shape variation at a given operating conditions (i.e., ball filling, mill speed, liner type). The unbiased mill length was assumed to be beyond the mill length where no significant change observed in the charge trajectory and shape. For all tests, the torque of the charge was also measured by a torque sensor. The special design of the model mill with the diameter of 100 cm made possible to increase the mill length in steps of 3.6 cm up to 21.6 cm. Four types of liners, five steel ball fillings (10, 15, 20, 25, 30% v/v) and three mill speeds (55, 70, 85% of critical speed) were tested. The ball sizes ranged from 4 to 12 mm. The results indicated that when the mill length was below 10.8 cm the end walls prevented the charge from free falling. This resulted in lower impact point angles and lower power draws compared with the case of no end-wall effects. When the same experiments were performed using an iron ore instead of balls with the same size range, the impact of end-wall effects was more pronounced. For an increase of 30% in the speed (from 55 to 85%), the torque due the change in the charge shape decreased by 41% (from 3.7 to 2.2 kgf.m) when mill filling was 30%. At the same operating conditions when steel balls used the torque decreased only by 19% (from 9 to 7.2 kgf.m). This was expected due to irregular shapes of the ore particles which facilitated bridging. Three-dimensional DEM simulations also resulted in the similar conclusions.

Wireless technologies are increasingly being implemented in underground mines for various purposes such as communications, tracking, remote control, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, the adoption comes with risks as common wireless systems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless system, often operate in the unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The shared nature of the ISM band can lead to interference among devices and consequently cause performance degradation and reliability issues. In this study, we developed two wireless communication evaluation boards as a tool to evaluate the performance and reliability of a wireless system with the presence of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) from other wireless systems in underground environments. We adjusted various parameters including signal power from adjacent frequency channels, noise power within the same channel, the movement of personnel, and communication packet size. Our findings indicate that, while the power of the EMI source plays a key role, the motion of personnel in the tunnel also has a strong impact on performance, and this impact increases as the power of EMI sources increases. In noisy environments, smaller packet sizes are preferable as they enhance the likelihood of successful transmission. High levels of interference or noise can lead to increased packet loss or error rates, potentially causing communication links to fail completely or become ineffective. The evaluation boards utilized in this study are based on a practical wireless transmission system deployed in a remote controller for a heavy mining machinery used in underground coal mines. The results and findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of wireless systems that are resilient to EMI in underground mining environments.

Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation is a challenging and demanding field, requiring application of professional knowledge, skill and experience of the highest order. If the many potential pitfalls are to be avoided, however, there are two other requirements which are of equal, if not greater, importance:good communication, and common sense. Estimation of Mineral Resources and particularly of Ore Reserves is almost always a team effort, involving a number of disciplines. Good teamwork requires good communication, both between team members and between the team and other parties having an interest in the process. Breakdown in these lines of communication can have far reaching effects on the project under consideration. The need to use common sense during a Resource or Reserve estimation exercise would seem to be self-evident. It is surprising, however, how often rigid adherence to procedures and methods prevails at the expense of clear thinking, usually with adverse and sometimes fatal effects on the project under consideration. This has become increasingly true as computerised methods have assumed a central role in Resource/Reserve estimation. The critical question that estimators should ask themselves at all stages of the process is: æIs what is being done sensible given the data available, what is known of this deposit and the purpose of the exercise?Æ

The electrochemical reduction of aluminum chloride to aluminum was investigated in a closed, two-compartment cell utilizing a molten chloride electrolyte. The externally heated cell was divided into a reduction compartment and a combination AICl3 feed and metal removal compartment. Aluminum was deposited at 700° C on a molten aluminum catbode from a KCI-NaCI-AICI3 electrolyte. The AICl3 content of the electrolyte was replenished by either vapor or solid additions. The chlorine evolved was collected and measured to give a quantitative evaluation of AICl3 reduction. The effects of anode and cathode current densities and AIC13 concentration on anode current efficiencies were studiedo A range of 64 to 84 percent anode current efficiency was obtained with the 25-pound electrolyte capacity cell and related auxiliary equipment.

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." A DISCUSSION of the developments of the past decade in the field of refractories, and the effect of these developments on the performance and life of open-hearth furnaces, is perhaps best introduced by reference to Fig. 1. This shows the most important types of refractories doing into various parts of the furnace, together with their cost, and remarks on their use. It has been estimated that half of the refractory makers market comes from the iron and steel industry, and something like one-third of all refractory brick used finds its way into open-hearth furnaces. To melt steel, a furnace capable of withstanding temperatures close to 3000 deg. F. is required. The furnace is assembled of various refractory materials selected by experience and economic considerations. Furnace structures today, from a refractory standpoint, are considerably different from a quarter century ago. Furnace operators, interested in the performance of refractories, care little how they are made or where they come from so long as they give reasonable service. But, the entire history of the refractory is important and technical knowledge of the ceramic materials used in making the refractory is necessary to the manufacturers, so that the proper article gets into the hands of the ultimate consumer.

Murer Company, Andermatt, Switzerland, can claim to have done pioneer work in the construction of inclined shafts. This happened in 1968/69, when we decided to bore with a Wirth tunnel borer an inclined shaft, 1100 m in length, 3.0 m in diameter, and with a grade of 65%, in the 2400 kilo pascall per sq. cm granite of the Montblanc Massive. The whole excavation was accomplished in ten months which, at least for European conditions, can be claimed as a record. It was, at least to our knowledge, the first inclined shaft to be bored full-face (Fig. 1). Encouraged by the experiences and performances attained at Châtelard, we approached other projects of the same kind. We were awarded, together with Hochtief Ltd., Essen, a contract from Schluchseewerke, Freiburg, Germany, in December 1969, for the construction of a penstock for the Hornbergstufe at Wehr, Germany, with a diameter of 6.3 m. This inclined shaft with a grade of 55% is located in Schwarzwalder granite with a compressive strength of up to 2000 kilo pascall per sq. cm, about 31,000 psi. As no exact geological data were available about the rock to be worked, and a fault zone from 80 to 150 m long had to be faced, as well as a few individual fissures of varying thickness, it was decided to use the multi-stage method. The 3-m diam tunnelling machine which had driven the oblique shaft at Châtelard had now finished work, and an immediate beginning was made with driving the pilot staft. This was very welcome to the contractor, since exact information about the type of rock present and the inflows of water was required immediately and before the final borehole diameter was fixed, for the purpose of dimensioning the supports to be subsequently installed.

Reagents used for batch flotation tests were Aeroxanthate-343 & 350, Dow Z-6, & reagent-4037 (from Benambra) as copper collectors; Na2SiO3 & Na2S2O3as gangue depressants; lime & HCl as pH regulators; and pine oil & MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) as flotation frothers. A Denver Sub A flotation cell of capacity 250 gms was used for the batch flotation experiments. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for copper assays and microscopy for selectivity and liberation studies. Melbourne tap water was used throughout the experiments. Unless otherwise stated, the following parameters apply to the flotation experiments: flotation impeller speed - 1300 rpm, pulp density during flotation- 22%, reagents addition - in 4 stages, total conditioning time for collectors - 8 minutes, total flotation time- 9 minutes. A variable quantity of copper mineral collector according to the test in question was added, then conditioned the pulp for 2 minutes. The froth was removed by hand, scraping the full length of the cell at constant depth every 10 seconds. No frother is required for this copper tailing flotation. Four concentrates were collected after addition of collector and conditioning at 2,4,6 and 9 minutes. The pulp volume was maintained at a constant level to yield a constant froth depth.

Ammonia and Amonium salts have been recognized as effective leaching agents in hydrometallurgical processes due to low toxicity and cost, easy recovery and high selective recovery of metals. New research findings of considerable advantages of leaching by these agents and elimination of problems associated with acid leaching has resulted in a new approach in the world to this method. The investigations in this field indicate more frequent use of this method for extracting copper from ore and concentrate relative to other basic metals. In this paper, we have attempted to describe the basis and different ammonia leaching methods and present the major research activities in this field for copper. We have also presented the latest findings and related novel processes. Comparative assessment of advantages and disadvantages of this method relative to acid leaching method, kinetic study of copper ammonia leaching and evaluation of Eh-pH diagrams in a system containing water and ammonia are other parts of our study. Finally, by describing the studies on copper extraction from the resulting pregnant solutions, the applicable extraction agents have been reviewed.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. "INTRODUCTION ..Although the occurrence of iron ore in Missouri was recognized by Marquette as early as 1673, the first known mining and smelting operation was conducted in 1815. This operation was near Arcadia, Iron County, the first of its kind west of the Mississippi-Ohio River system. Several small furnaces of short life were erected in Missouri in the ensuing 30 years. However, until the extensive deposits of Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob were opened between 1843 and 1850, the state remained a minor producer of iron. It was this district which was chiefly responsible for the prominent position Missouri held in the iron industry until the late 1880's. At this time the easily minable high-grade ores became exhausted and the discovery of the immense Lake Superior deposits depressed the raw-ore price to such an extent that any mines ceased to operate. 3/Small yearly production of iron ores continued in Missouri to the present. Owing to war demands for hard ore suitable for open-hearth steel, the M. A. Hanna Co., through its subsidiary, the Ozark Ore Co., reopened the Iron Mountain, deposits and installed new equipment in an old concentrator to handle the low-grade ores left from previous operations. At present, ore production is from open pits, but underground mining is contemplated in the future. About 2,000 tons a day of iron ore is treated by gravity concentration of material from the open pits in the immediate vicinity. The concentrate is shipped to the Birmingham, Ala., district and to Granite City, Ill., for smelting. The coarse tailing is sold for ballast and concrete aggregate. The iron requirements of the concentrate stipulated by the purchaser are not difficult to meet, but the phosphorus is frequently higher than desired. For 1946 the concentrates averaged 54.18 percent iron and 0.235 percent phosphorus with low sulfur. The Ozark Ore Co. concentrate, however, sometimes contains as much as 0.40 percent phosphorus. The phosphorus in ores from those portions of the deposits wherein the phosphorus occurs with siliceous gangue is readily rejected in the milling, but in much of the ore the phosphorus is associated with the iron and concentrated with the iron minerals. Selective mining is impossible owing to the spotty occurrence of the phosphorus mineral. Often within 5 feet the ore will change from low phosphorus to high phosphorus, and it would be expedient to find a method of rejecting enough phosphorus at the mill from the latter type of ore to meet the phosphorus specification."
