A small electronic digital computer employing punched cards has been used to facilitate the solution of a variety of problems in Bureau of Mines pyrometallurgical research. In this work the computer has been found to be economical for solving both simple problems that occur repeatedly and those involving complex or iterative calculations. Each of these classes of problems and their respective solutions are described. These small computers can be used effectively by researchers when they work in consultation with a computer specialist. Close team work produces the required solutions in less time, and, oftentimes, in a more useful form. Participation in programming by researchers develops in them a skill for evaluating the suitability of problems for electronic computing.

A variety of modeling techniques can be utilized to forecast metal production at heap leaching operations. These approaches reflect a wide range of complexity, flexibility, time to implement, cost, and accuracy. For many operators, a spreadsheet-based modeling technique is attractive since the calculations are directly accessible, models can often be developed by site staff, and the results are generally easy to extract and interpret. The authors have developed a spreadsheet-based modeling technique that provides a high degree of flexibility, while still considering detailed operating information for ore properties, leach kinetics, scaleup factors, lift height, and in-heap metal inventories. The technique involves establishing kinetic leach curves for each ore type to characterize metal extractions, followed by application of separate metal recovery curves to define the rate at which leached metals exit the heap in pregnant solution, taking into account delays due to the in-heap solution inventory. At any point in time, the difference between total metal extracted and total metal recovered is equal to the in-heap inventory of the leached metal. This modeling technique is particularly useful for larger multi-lift heaps where delays in metal recovery are appreciable due to in-heap solution holdup. The technique is also applicable to sites with multiple heaps, leach cycles, and/or metal recovery plants (e.g., carbon columns for gold; solvent extraction for copper). This paper describes the modeling technique, including input data required and methods for defining kinetic leach curves and metal recovery curves. The technique is compared against an alternative spreadsheet technique using a simplified in-heap solution inventory calculation to forecast metal production, which has proven to be effective at a number of sites.

A proper consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. Manufacture of Wrought Iron The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identified with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval compared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man's needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the forerunner in principle of today's scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort's invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture. The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

Kaolin, or china clay, is the term applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates. Because of its purity, light color, and refractory properties, kaolin is used extensively in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic wares and as a filler by the rubber and paper industries. Although there are numerous pottery and enamelware plants in Texas, and large rubber and paper industries; all of the kaolin used in these plants is from other States, There are two known occurrences of kaolin in Texas, namely, the Leakey deposit in Real County and the several deposits of the Medley district in southern Jeff Davis County. An investigation of the Mueller kaolin deposit in the Medley district was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Following an examination of this deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by diamond core drilling.

A series of economic evaluations of processes for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina from low- grade aluminous materials is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative processing costs . The two processes considered in this evaluation are concerned with the recovery of alumina from clay through the formation of ammonium alum . In the first process , dehydrated clay is leached with ammonium bisulfate solution ; in the second process , clay is baked with ammonium sulfate and then leached with water containing a small quantity of sulfuric acid . After the alumina is dissolved by either of these methods , the iron is reduced to the ferrous state to avoid crystallization of ferric sulfate with the alum . The recovery of pure alum requires two crystallization steps . The alum crystals are then redissolved and precipitated with ammonia to produce alumina hydrate , which is calcined to a - alumina . These evaluations are based on published work , and the proposed plants are designed for a capacity of 1,000 tons of alumina per day . The estimated operating cost per ton of alumina for the bisulfate leaching process is $ 117.06 , and for the sulfate baking process , $ 109.26 . Using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 , the estimated fixed capital costs , in the same order , are $ 158 million and $ 146 million . Under current economic conditions , these two processes are not competitive with the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite . Since small improvements will not reduce costs sufficiently to approach competitive costs , future research work with these processes should be confined to areas likely to result in major cost reductions .

The aphorism that provided the title of this paper is probably a couple of hundred years old, but it still expresses a fundamental truth in the metals industry. This truth will be illustrated through a brief review of the major developments in the extractive metallurgy of the oxidized ores of nickel - the "laterite" ores. While the details to be discussed are for the most part specific to nickel, a close parallel with other commodities - particularly in recent years - will be apparent even to those whose interest in nickel itself is slight. Thus it is hoped that this paper will be stimulating, at the least, to anyone who is concerned with the implementation of process improvement, "Invention" in the present context means any change from "conventional" process technology that shows a reasonable chance of reducing costs, increasing revenues, or both, in the production of a commodity. This can be anything from a simple rearrangement of flowsheet steps to a completely different basis for processing. And the result may reduce costs by more efficient use of energy or labor or reagents; may increase revenues by better recovery of the primary product or by introducing the recovery of previously ignored by-products; may insure sales volume (and thereby cash flow) through higher product purity or an improved product form. "Necessity" is the perceived need to attain at least one of these classes of results. This perception of necessity, however, varies widely from management to management and from project to project.

This project, "Analysis of Men, Materials and Supplies Handling Systems in Underground Metal and Nonmetal Mines" documents the productivity and safety aspects of the existing equipment and systems utilized in transporting personnel and supplies from the surface to the underground production work place. The Present Systems Study (this text -Volume II) documents the productivity and safety of existing men and material movement systems for six representative underground metal and nonmetal mines. Identification of common problem areas was performed using recognized industrial engineering techniques. The back-up data for the industrial engineering analysis of each mine is included as respective appendices (Volume III). A summary of the study background material, six mines' problem areas, comparison of problem areas, problem analysis, and solution recommendations are included as the project final report (Volume I), bound under separate cover.

The process utilized at Norilsk Nickel Polar Circle Division for treating slimes from the electrorefining of copper and nickel was developed in the late nineteen fifties and has survived without any fundamental changes. This technology is a combination of pyro and hydrometallurgical operations to produce PGM concentrates that are sent away for refining. The characteristic feature of the current technology is multiple-stage, extended cycle treatment with significant incomplete production, low labour and automation efficiency and poor hygiene and sanitary conditions. To eliminate all negative aspects mentioned above, specialists of Norilsk Nickel Polar Circle Division have developed a new hydrometallurgical process for treating electrolytic slimes. The main steps of the flow sheet developed are autoclave leaching of the slimes and electrochemical opening-up of a cake from autoclave leaching. The implementation of the new process will allow Norilsk Nickel Polar Circle Division to shorten the process cycle 4-5-fold thus reducing the volume of incomplete production, considerably increase labour efficiency, simultaneously improving working conditions, upgrade the final concentrate, reducing costs and increasing PGM recovery during refining and, ensure higher security of precious metals by employing automated processes and vacuum sealed units.

"The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. Prior to rehabilitation, plant cover on quartz gravel overburden at Wangaloa coal mine was highly patchy. Stabilisation techniques have since considerably altered the condition of the main overburden yet deposits in the east and west remain largely intact. On the eastern overburden, three distinct zones of revegetation have naturally developed: Zone 1 represents a dense plant cover, Zone 2 a patchy cover and Zone 3 a sparse cover of isolated plants. Aerial photographs show much of the eastern overburden was deposited between 1940 and 1960s. Yet we found that the temporal scale of deposition did not wholly account for the differences observed in vegetation development. To investigate other influential factors, we set up 12 study plots using four replicates in each vegetation zone. The diversity and density of plants in each plot were measured to quantify the degree of vegetation development. Samples from the substrate in each plot were collected using soil cores to a depth of 10 cm. Cores were analysed for indicators of nutrient availability, metal content and physical composition. We found that substrate chemistry varied between individual study plots, but showed little difference overall along the vegetation gradient. Substrate physical differences were much greater. The ratio of coarse quartz pebbles: fines was considerably higher in Zone 3 than other zones, and within zones where plants were not growing. Bulk density also increased successively from Zone 1 - 3. We found clear evidence for the reversed stratigraphy of excavation superimposed over the time scale of deposition, and the corresponding nature of fine particles. The rate of revegetation was therefore highly dependent upon the substrate composition of the last surface deposit from the dumping truck. Our data suggests an optimum ratio exists between inert coarse material and a fine matrix for progressive natural vegetation development on mine substrates.

The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines are located at Broken Hill in the western part of New South Wales, Australia, 930 km west¬northwest of Sydney. Mining Methods Where pillars must be left between stopes, extraction of a block of ore between two or more levels is carried out in stages: 1) Stopes are mined overhand by horizontal cut¬and-fill stoping, or by long-hole stoping. The various methods of horizontal cut-and-fill stoping used are desig¬nated as: -Loader cut-and-fill stoping with horizontal blast¬holes and diesel load-haul-dump (LHD) units. -Open stoping with horizontal blastholes and com¬pressed air or electric scrapers, or with diesel or electric LHD units. Square-set timber stoping, where ground condition precludes open stoping. The backs are sup¬ported with timber square sets. Pattern rockbolting of the backs may be used as an intermediate stage between open stoping and square-set stoping. 2) Vertical pillars are mined by undercut-and-fill stoping or by vertical crater retreat stoping. 3) Where a horizontal pillar has been formed below the level above the primary stope, this level pillar, usually 6.1 to 8.2 m in depth, may be mined by over¬hand square-set stoping or by undercut-and-fill. Long-hole stoping is used at the Zinc Corp. (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated (NBHC) to mine parts of the zinc-rich A and B lodes. Drilling is carried out from drill drives and, in some cases, sills. Hole sizes used are 165 mm (61/2 in.), 110 mm (4'h in.), and 65 mm (21/2 in.) nominal diam with hole lengths being limited to 50, 30, and 20 m respectively. Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) and water gel explosives are used. Broken ore is loaded from drawpoints at the bottom of the stope using rubber-tired diesel-driven LHD units which deliver ore to an orepass. Annual production at Zinc Corp. and NBHC accord¬ing to mining method is given in Table 1. At Zinc Corp. mining is being carried out at depths varying between 200 and 832 m. At NBHC it ranges from 528 to 915 m below the surface. The average travel time to the stope is 30 to 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS Size, Shape, and Dip There are six separate lodes which carry minable ore in the mines of Zinc Corp. and New Broken Hill Consolidated. The lowest of these and the main ore bodies presently being mined at Zinc Corp. are the lead lodes, consisting of a siliceous fluoritic ore body (No. 3 lens) and overlying it a calcite rhodonitic ore body (No. 2 lens). Each possesses characteristic ratios of lead, silver, and zinc, although the grade within each lens is variable, in places being as high as 30% Pb. There are also low¬grade portions which consist chiefly of poorly mineral¬ized rhodonitic material. No. 3 lens terminates within the Zinc Corp. leases, while No. 2 lens continues into the NBHC leases where it continues to provide a significant proportion of pro¬duction from the mine. Overlying the No. 2 lens are the various zinc-rich ore bodies. In ascending sequence these are lower No. 1 lens, upper No. 1 lens, A lode, and B lode. A typical assay for the small No. 1 lens group ore bodies is 8% lead, 50 g/t silver, and 20% zinc. The `A' lode is a large low-grade ore body in which the higher grade sections assay 4% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 10% zinc; larger quantities of lower grade ma¬terial also occur. B lode, the main zinc lode, typically assays 5% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 17% zinc. B lode increases in size as it extends south, and in NBHC is a major ore body, contributing about 52% of the production. All the lodes pitch south, the average pitch being 0.52 rad (30°) in the Zinc Corp. leases and rather flatter than this in the NBHC leases (see Figs. 1-3). The ground is all competent rock. Production requirements at Zinc Corp. are 900 000 t and 1 200 000 at NBHC.

In the past 35 years, technology developments at Inco have reduced the number of Peirce-Smith converters in Nickel/ Bulk (nickel-copper matte) service from 13 to the current 5. This paper will discuss: ? The performance and life of ?stretch? 13.7m shells versus conventional 10.7m converters. ? Process control and information system development from the early 1980?s to view converter aisle status on a continuous basis to the recent central control of the stretch shells. ? Nitrogen cooling of finishing matte from plant testing to implementation in the early 1990?s to replace the dedicated cooling converters. ? The impact on converting of changing the smelter flowsheet in the early 1990?s. ? A current program to develop a converting strategy for the future to address environmental issues and profitability.

IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.

"The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. Based on 1970 figures, it was reported that the production of 1 ton of copper in the U.S.A. required 111. 8 x 106 BTU of energy, of which 60. 7 x 106 BTU (54.3%) was consumed in mining and processing (l)The survey of Canadian mills, conducted by CANMET and reported to the CMP meeting of 1978 (2), showed the following milling energy consumption figures (approximate averages):"

This report describes a computer program that is used for the calculation of the coordinates and elevations of subsidence survey pins located by intersection. This program was developed for the Federal Bureau of Mines by the Numerical Analysis Laboratory, University of Arizona. These calculations, although relatively simple, are both tedious and time-consuming when computed with a desk calculator and trigonometric tables. In this survey, a large number of pins were surveyed repeatedly, and it was evident that both time and money could be saved by using a digital computer.

The Freeport McMoRan El Paso Refinery uses co-generation to produce some of its electricity and all of its steam. This paper will cover the operation of the co-generation plant natural gas turbine at a fixed RPM for blade longevity and energy output. The by-product heat from the turbine passes through boilers with additional heat from a duct burner to produce steam for the Tank House and auxiliary operations. The steam demand varies dramatically throughout the day based on unloading activities in the Tank House. The use of an automated steam control system within the El Paso Refinery will help stabilize line pressure by incrementally controlling steam consumption based on electrolyte temperature. This will minimize steam line pressure fluctuations. INTRODUCTION In the mid 1920’s the Nichols Copper Company of Laurel Hill, New York recognized the need for a modern copper refining facility in the southwest. Due to the many railroad heads, affordable power and abundant labor supply, and the close proximity to regional copper smelters in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico, El Paso became the logical location. In December 1928, ground was broken for the joint venture refinery between the Nichols Copper Company, Phelps Dodge, and the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company. In September 1930, Nichols Copper Company became a part of Phelps Dodge Corporation after a stock exchange. In July 1938, Nichols Division officially became Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation. In March 2007, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge. Energy costs (electrical and thermal) are critically important in the viability of modern copper electrorefineries. The El Paso Refinery produces electricity and steam through its cogeneration system. The El Paso cogeneration facility is a natural gas, 15-megawatt facility containing five turbine generators and associated waste heat recovery boilers. The facility is divided into two phases. Phase I consists of two Allison 2.2-megawatt turbine generators. Phase II consists of three Solar Taurus 3.5-megawatt turbine generators. Presently three units in Phase II are operated. The Phase I units were purchased and installed in 1986 and the Phase II units in 1992 (Solar 1991). The facility operated at full capacity until 2003 when steam demand was significantly reduced due to decrease in cathode production and closure of the copper sulfate and precious metal operations. Phase I units were taken out of service and put on care and maintenance status.
