More than 100,000 people from 110 countries involved in the construction aggregates and ready mix concrete industries are expected to attend Conexpo-Conlagg '99 in Las Vegas, NV March 23-27. The exhibition, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, takes place every three years. It is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton Center and Pavilion. The show serves as a venue for con- tractors and others involved in aggregates construction to view the latest in equipment, technology and services. More than 1,500 exhibitors will use more than 147,200 m2 (1.6 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibit space. Attendees include presidents and company owners, sales and marketing managers, general managers and project managers. An estimated 20% of the attendees will be from outside of the United States. New for the Conexpo-Conlagg '99 show is a 3,715- m2 (40,000-sq ft) Information Technology Pavilion. This event, organized by AIEIC Systems, will showcase computer technology for the architectural, engineering and construction industries. Shown in the pavilion will be the latest developments in cost management, estimating, bidding, project management and accounting. In addition, the Information Technology Pavilion will demonstrate the latest in computer-aided design software, systems and services. Conexpo-Codagg '99 will also emphasize live demonstrations of exhibitor's products. Individual exhibitors will demonstrate their machinery so attendees can see the latest technology in action. Because the Conexpo-Codagg exposition is so large, "shows within a show" have been created to help attendees locate the products and services best suited to their interests. Seven product concentration areas will be formed. Each area houses suppliers and manufacturers of similar products or services.

In 2004, Zinifex Budel Zink commenced testing with the objective to increase the precipitation of aluminium in the iron purification stage of its hydrometallurgical zinc circuit, without the use of expensive reagents. Findings from the literature applied to the leach circuit at Zinifex Budel Zink demonstrated that aluminium removal from the leach circuit could be increased by lowering the ferric concentration and acidity in the vessels where jarosite precipitation occurs. An associated increase in copper precipitation was mitigated by limiting the extent to which the ferric concentration was lowered in the vessels where jarosite forms and lowering the ratio of copper to aluminium in the solutions entering these vessels.

"The combined treatment process for mine, tailings storage facility, quarry, circulating, and waste water in the mining and metals industry brings together the conventional chemical treatment processes and pneumatic flotation cells of the KFM series. The key principle of the process is preparing the water for treatment by saturating with finely dispersed air bubbles in the flotation cell blowers. Gas-air lift dispersers located in the lower part of the cell body additionally saturate the cell’s contents with finely dispersed air. Due to the residual content of flotation agents in the treated water, hydroxide ion-air aggregates form at the aerator outlet, supporting the efficient precipitation of hydroxide ions of heavy non-ferrous metals, calcium and magnesium ions. This process was tested in the pilot plant KFM-180 with a raw (untreated) water capacity of up to 18 m3/h per 1 m3 of the flotation cell volume using a mixture of the tailings storage facility and mine water from JSC Safyanovo Copper. The treatment process included raw water treatment with lime, aeration in KFM cells, and filtration in a sorbent bed. The content of metal ions in the treated water is lower than in the feed water by a factor of up to 170,000 and approaches the standards: aluminum 0.016-0.02 mg/l, copper 0.0043-0.0045 mg/l, zinc 0.049-0.052 mg/l. circulating water of Soryin Tailings Storage Facility at JSC Svyatogor. The treatment process included raw water treatment with lime and alkali, aeration in KFM cells, and filtration in a sorbent bed. The content of metals in the treated water is lower than in the feed water by a factor of up to 9000: copper 0.022 mg/l, zinc 0.012 mg/l, iron 0.012 mg/l, manganese 0.015 mg/l, nickel 0.132 mg/l, arsenic 0.016 mg/l. Water hardness is significantly lower: calcium - 12.6 mg/l, magnesium - 1.1 mg/l. This process can be used in the treatment of mine, quarry, tailings storage facility, and circulating water at mining and non-ferrous metals projects."

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, conducted studies to recover phosphate from four dolomitic southern Florida deposits not currently mined. The samples contained 5.8 to 10.2 percent P205 and 1.7 to 1.8 percent MgO. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no pebble concentrate (plus 1.2 mm) could be produced from these samples. A scheme was developed that consisted of desliming, grinding, scrubbing, and redesliming the ore to produce a flotation feed. Conventional one-step fatty acid-fuel oil batch flotation tests on the samples resulted in concentrates containing 29.0 to 31.3 percent P205 at flotation recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 96.1 percent of the flotation feed. The MgO content of the concentrates ranged from 0.47 to 1.36 percent. Continuous flotation of the Manatee No. 2 sample indicated that commercial-grade phosphate concentrates analyzing 31.3 percent P205 and 0.55 percent MgO could be produced with a flotation recovery of 89.9 percent. The MgO content of concentrates obtained from the Manatee No. I and Hardee samples was 1.20 to 1.36 percent, respectively. Leaching with aqueous SO2 reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8 percent, but with a concomitant loss in phosphate recovery.

A GLANCE through the Bibliography appended to this paper will show that the Transactions of this Institute contain what virtually contitutes a history of the development of the manu¬facture of steel rails in this country and abroad. It is, therefore, fitting that this paper, bringing one branch of this important subject down to date, should be here presented, and it is also appropriate to select this joint meeting of our Society with the Iron and Steel Institute to compare the specifications covering the rails produced in these two countries, and to propose a standard specification to govern the manufacture of American rails for export. During the last ten years the production of Bessemer steel rails in the United States and Great Britain has amounted to 32,128,720 gross tons. Nearly 19,000,000 tons have been rolled in the past five years. The next five years will see an even larger output, owing partly to the extension of railway projects in the Orient, in South and Central America, in Mexico, and in Australia and the other British Colonies. Of late years, the American rail-mills have so largely increased their daily output, that trade conditions have often made possible the delivery of American rails to foreign ports. The tenders submitted by American mills, however, have always been accompanied by requests for changes in the foreign specifications, chiefly in the reduction of the amount of testing required; and it has only been natural, especially at first, that the engineer, whose specification had always been accepted without question by British mills, should interpret American tenders 'as an evidence that an inferior rail would be furnished

A central requirement for using simulation models is the need for retrospect testing to validate experimental conclusions. Acceptance of a model by managers and safety practitioners is more likely to depend on its tested performance in-the field rather than on the underlying logic or the validity aspects of the model itself. It is here that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. The original version of the rail haulage sub-assembly was success¬fully tested in the field (Sanford, 1969). However, the case studies that were described here involved single-stage haulage and restricted jobtypes from UGMHS. Since this report together with Volume VI (Production Subsystem) describes extensive changes and modifications to the rail haulage sub-assembly and UGMHS, field tests were necessary to verify both the rail model and the linking concepts to the Produc¬tion Sub-system. Mine Description The candidate mine selected for model verification works the 6 1/2 foot Pittsburgh seam. Shaft openings are used for manways and ventilation and a dual compartment slope for materials handling. In the bottom half of the slope, a hoist with track handles supplies and equipment. In the upper half, a 42 inch belt conveyor travelling at 450 fpm moves coal from a rotary dump to the surface. The immediate roof is shale with the first 12 inches taken during development mining. The City of Portland is constructing the Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit as a part of its commitment to reduce combined sewer overflows into the Willamette River and the Columbia Slough. Known as “The Big Pipe,” the conduit has a 3.7 m. (12 ft.) internal diameter and is 5,640 m. (18,500 ft.) long. Construction Segment 1 of the project includes 250 m. (814 ft.) of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) installed by boring and jacking. Five separate crossings were constructed beneath Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Columbia Boulevard, an adjacent arterial roadway. This paper describes the design and construction of these bored and jacked crossings.

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. Designing and constructing tunnels in seismic prone areas present unique challenges to both designers and contractors. The Westside Purple Line Extension Project– Section 3 in Los Angeles requires crossing an active fault that may subject the tunnels to extreme structural demands. In order to ensure that the linings will safely accommodate the fault movement, a revolutionary composite section—steel plate embedded in the intrados of the precast concrete segmental tunnel lining was finally selected. Additionally, continuous expansion steel plates over the circumferential joints will be installed to mitigate the potential opening of the circumferential joints.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated methods of recovering potash values from process and waste brines. Laboratory pan evaporation of four chloride brines produced crude salts containing predominantly sylvite, halite and carnallite. Six sulfate- chloride brines produced crude salts containing primarily schoenite, kainite, leonite, sylvite, carnallite, and halite. Potash grades ranged from 7.2% to 22.2% K20, and recoveries by crystallization ranged from 85% to 99%. Sylvite flotation from chloride evaporites with amine collector, recovered 90% to 97% of the potash in a concentrate containing 54.3% to 60.3% K20. Fatty acid flotation of the high sulfate evaporite recovered 78% of the sulfate minerals in a 28%-K20 concentrate. Flotation of the remaining chloride minerals with amine collector recovered 80% of the potash in a 59.7%-K20 concentrate. Solar evaporation of 37 854 L (10,000 gal.) of brine recovered 99% of the potash in a crude evaporite containing 24.5% schoenite and 20% sylvite. Flotation in a 45-kglh (100-lblh) continuous flotation unit recovered over 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates, containing 28% and 62.3% K20, respectively. An economic evaluation is included.

"Laboratory flotation tests of slow cooled converter slag have showed that 92.5% copper recovery at the copper cut-off grade of 24 - 25 % can be achieved by using a 50:50 ratio of DSP330 and SIBX (sodium isobutyl xanthate) at the natural pH of 7 and with a grinding time of 18.5 minutes. 70ìéç is the P80 achieved at this grinding time. MIBC is the frother and the solid content of the flotation feed was 46%. In the plant trials, two types of collectors at two different feed particle sizes for both the normal and slow cooled slag were operated. The particle size was controlled by the feed rate. The P80 of 75 ìçé at a feed rate between 32 - 36 t/h were tested. The plant trials have demonstrated that the copper recovery in the milling and flotation process of the slow cooled slags was improved by 3%. IntroductionIt is proposed to float the slow cooled converter slag, in the auxiliary circuit of the copper concentrator at Mount Isa, by using the processing conditions identified from several laboratory flotation tests. Among these laboratory tests, one produced a copper recovery of 4 % higher than those achieved from a normal cooled slag with the same slag feed grade and the same copper content (24 - 26 %) in the concentrate. These test conditions were selected for further studies.Laboratory Test Work and Plant TrialsThere has been a lot of work conducted under laboratory and plant conditions [1]. However, the achieved results did not justify their total implementation in the Mount Isa Copper Concentrator. Initially, the lab trials were carried out with slag cooled 100% in air; then it was changed to combined cooling for 12 h with air and 2.5 days with water sprays. The reason for this change was the shortage of space when the slag was cooled 100% in air, as it takes several days to achieve safe temperatures for its removal. The San Manuel Copper Smelter has reported that their slag was left for air cooling in pits for 8 h and then was followed by water cooling for 2-3 days [2]"

Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.

Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) is a complex mixture of carbonaceous and mineral particles with a variation in size and shape. Accumulation of RCMD in the lungs of underground coal miners results in severe respiratory damage and ultimately progressive pneumoconiosis known as the black lung disease. The occurrence of the black lung disease dropped to a low of 2.1% in 1990s but has increased to 3.1% in 2000s [1], prompting more research on coal mine dust mitigation. In addition to surveying the impact of new mining technologies on the size of generated dust and exposure measurement, a comprehensive characterization of physico-chemical properties of RCMD particles are essential for a better understanding of the adverse health effects of coal mine dust. Such vital factors include particle size, surface charge, morphology, composition, and agglomeration state. The respirable fraction of RCMD, has been designated as particles < 10 μm in diameter, and almost all studies on the RCMD toxicity have focused on micron-sized particles. However, recent toxicological studies have shown that nanoparticles (particles with one dimension less than 100 nm) can have a magnified toxicity compared to the larger particles with the same chemistry [2]. Nanoparticles have a much higher specific surface area compared to the same mass of larger particles and are thus more reactive. Most micron-size particles can be cleared by the body’s defense mechanism. However, inhaled nanoparticles can easily deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract and can translocate to vital organs. [2].

Mill power models have been used in a variety of ways in industrial practice since power directly equates to throughput and fineness of ground product. We first start with Hogg-Fuerstenau Power Model and show how this model successfully predicted the power draw of many grinding mills in several mining operations. Then, we show how this model was on the verge of being able to predict the influence of lifter design on power draw. Next, we describe the discrete element model and how it overcame the issues faced by the previous power model. Using a DEM software known as Millsoft, we show the influence of lifter design geometry on power draw and analyze the power draw of rubber lifters versus the steel lifters via several case studies. As years passed, the two-dimensional discrete element model imbedded in Millsoft is superseded by three-dimensional discrete element method. Due to the gigantic computational power of graphic processing units, new computational codes that can do the tumbling motion along the entire length of the mill has come about. Here, we show the predictive capability of Blaze-DEM for ball and SAG mills.

The orange waste after lime water modification was converted into promising adsorbents for fluoride by metal loading reaction. The effectiveness and mechanism of fluoride adsorption on metal loaded orange waste gel from synthetic and real plating solution were investigated. Amount of zirconium(IV), aluminium(III), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), titanium(IV), vanadium(IV) and tin(IV) loaded on orange waste from aquearegia dissolution were evaluated to be 1.62, 1.16, 0.93, 0.95, 1.20, 1.12, 0.97 mmol/g respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of zirconium(IV), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), iron(III) and aluminium(III) loaded orange waste for fluoride ions were evaluated to be 1.74, 0.91, 1.07, 0.98 and 1.01 mmol/g from aqueous solution. The mechanism of fluoride adsorption by metal loaded orange waste was inferred to be ligand exchange reaction. Application of zirconium(IV) loaded saponified orange juice residue(SOJR) for real plating solution showed effective removal of trace concentration of fluoride down to the accepted standard. The negligible interference of co existing anions like nitrate, carbonate, sulphate and chloride makes zirconium(IV) loaded SOJR a promising sorbent for waste water treatment. The adsorbed fluoride from fluoride loaded zirconium(IV)-SOJR was effectively desorbed by using alkali solution for its regeneration. This work shed light on the potential application of metal loaded SOJR to remediate fluoride contaminated water for environmental relevance.
