Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an underground sublevel caving mine located in north-west Queensland with a production rate of 6.4 Mt/a. The mine has sublevels spaced with a 25 m vertical interval. The production process on each level starts with the drilling and firing of a blind uphole rise to start the slot extraction. These rises are fired as a single shot and routinely need to achieve a design height of 22 m to 30 m depending on the local mine geometry. If the rise fails to perform as designed then the production phase of the level is delayed with significant rework required to remedy the situation.This paper describes the process that the EHM team has followed to improve the first time performance of each rise. The improvement process commenced with a review of results from previous rises and resulted in the identification of a number of improvement opportunities. A revised holistic approach was established for the process, which included involvement from operators and engineers. Through continued measurement and review of rise performance, inputs to the process were improved to a point where reliable results can now be expected. The successful performance of subsequent rises has been verified through a comprehensive quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) program. Before quality control processes were implemented, the success rate of blind uphole rises was only 11 per cent (one out of nine rises) at EHM. In comparison, the success rates have been vastly improved to 25 per cent (one out of four) and 75 per cent (three out of four) respectively following two stages of improvements. Industrial fly ash from (electro static precipitator) was mixed with soil at different levels on v/v basis for raising of pulpwood tree species. In field trials conducted on degraded soils increase in the plant growth of Eucalyptus tereticornis, Acacia auriculiformis and Casuarina equisetifolia by 10 %, was observed during the initial six months after plantation at 18-24% (v/v) fly ash concentration which was at par with chemical fertilizer treatment. Level of As, Se and Mo in flyash was 6.2, 3.6 and 4.0 ppm respectively. The radioactivity analyses 40K, soil and 28 fly ash showed that the activity levels of gamma emitting radionuclides K, Ra, Ac were within the permissible limits and mixing of fly ash with soil at tested concentration would have no deleterious effects. Available Co, Cr, Ni and Cd in rhizospheric soils were below detection limit. Fly ash at 10-20 % level (v/v) was also found to be a good potting mix material in forestry nurseries in terms of improving biomass production by 20 %, when tested in nursery seedlings of Eucalyptus tereticornis. Nursery addition of fly ash in soil decreased soil dehydrogenase activity and the soil bacterial population was negatively affected. These results indicate that use of fly ash in forestry sector involving nursery and plantations as a soil amendment agent upto 10-20 % v/v is a gainful utilisation of fly ash.

"THE CHALLENGE The 14km long, Arlbergtunnel, closed for public traffic during summer 2015, receiving a comprehensive and substantial renovation from 2015 to 2017. The main works discussed here, carried out during 2015, comprise 37 drill and blast SEM/NATM emergency escape tunnels from road level to the ventilation duct plenum have to be constructed as well as eight additional lay-by niches and three transformer tunnels. This presentation comprises the construction ventilation design, designed according to national regulations, suitable for 150 employees working 24/7 simultaneously at more than 40 single working sites lined up along the tunnel. The ventilation-system chosen was utilising two existing shafts for intake/discharge and a cross passage to surface, to handle a total fan power of 1.600kW. DESCRIPTION OF RENOVATION WORKS Linking Tyrol and Vorarlberg, two Federal States of Austria, the Arlbergtunnel is a single tube two-way road tunnel with vent duct plenum, constructed in the mid-1970s. According to latest EU legislation, additional escape exits have become obligatory. The existing seven cross passage links to the adjacent Arlberg Railway Tunnel, with average spacing of about 1.500m constructed in 2007, an additional upgrade to shorter escape spaces of approx. 400m was now required to comply with the updated legislation. Additional transformer tunnels, lay-by niches and small niches for emergency maintenance use, cleaning and other purposes, as well as a the installation of a new fire main in the invert, coupled with the simultaneous replacement of virtually the entire power and signaling cables, generated several dozen small and large single sites distributed along the 14km of tunnel.Purpose of the 37 walkable emergency escape tunnels is to reach the “upper deck” of the Arlbergtunnel, the vent duct plenum. These have an 180deg curve in plan, inclined at 10% and approx. 60m (65yd) long tunnels, excavated using drill and blast method starting from road level and working upwards to the level of an “intermediate soffit”, the vent duct plenum in the crown of the tunnel. The vent duct plenum is separated into a fresh air part and an exhaust air part, shown in Figure 1. The escape tunnels end with a pressure door in the fresh air section of the ventilation duct plenum. From there illuminated signs show the shortest escape route to the safe area between the road tunnel and the railway tunnel, as shown in Figure 2."

The Bacterial Oxidation (BIOX®) process for the pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery developed by Genmin, the mining division of Gencor, has been operating successfully at the Fairview mine since October 1986. The continuous operation of a pilot plant at Genmin Process Research has resulted in further process developments to improve plant operating efficiencies. These new developments which include a higher solids content of the pulp feed to BIOX®, lower retention times, higher operating temperatures, lower power utilization for oxygen dispersion .and reduced nutrient addition have all been successfully implemented on the Fairview plant.lt has furthermore been confirmed that the arsenic precipitate formed in the neutralization of effluent solutions complies to the United States of America EPA standards. Continuous cyanidation pilot plant work conducted on BIOX® product has indicated that cyanide consumption can be drastically decreased if a continuous flowsheet is implemented in preference to a batch leaching system.

Tinsley Oil Field.—Mississippi joined the oil-producing states when on Sept. 13, 1939, the Union Producing Company's G. C. Woodruff well No. 1, sec. 13, T. 10 N., R. 3 W., Yazoo County, was completed after drilling plug at 4540 ft. in the Woodruff sand of the Eutaw formation of Cretaceous, producing 300 bbl. per day of 34.4" gravity oil through a ¼-in. choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 80 to 1 and bottom-hole pressure of 2045 lb. This was the discovery well in the Tinsley oil field. The well was drilled to a total depth of 4567 ft. and no salt water was encountered. The sand underlies the Selma chalk formation. Nine producing oil wells and one dry hole were drilled and completed by the end of 1939. Two producing sands have been found in the Eutaw and a third sand in the top of the Tuscaloosa formation, called the Woodbine sand in Louisiana and Texas. Faulting is an important factor in the Tinsley field. Total oil production has been approximately 250,000 bbl. from the nine flowing wells. Total depth to top of productive zone was 4540 ft.; to bottoms of productive wells, 4580 ft. Net thickness of the producing formation is 20 to 40 ft., and its porosity is 24 per cent. The deepest zone tested was the Tuscaloosa, in which the depth of hole was 6112 feet. Six hundred and forty acres has been proved for oil production. Jackson Gas Field.—The Jackson gas field has shown a steady decline in the number of wells but the pressure has been maintained. This field is a perfect example of a water-driven field and the time of wells going to salt water is predictable. Five wells were drilled in the Jackson field, of which only one produced. Amory Gas Field.—Interest was renewed in the Amory gas field, where a new well was started in the fall of 1939. Geological Formations.—The deepest well drilled in 1939 was the Willmut Gas and Oil Company's Cleve Love S. F. Johnson No. 1, sec. 29, T. 6 N., R. 1 W., Hinds County. This well encountered the Lower Cretaceous, Trinity series from 3770 to 6422 ft.; Lower Mesozoic from 6422 to 6484 ft. The geological correlations and nomenclature of the formations in Mississippi are shown in the accompanying strati-graphic section.

THE Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Co. operates its custom mill at Colorado Springs on Cripple Creek ores exclusively. These ores are straight sulpho-tellurides, with practically no base metals such as Pb, Cu, Zn, As, or Sb. Upon entering the mill, the ore all passes through the sampler to storage bins, where beds of 5000 tons each are made to insure uniformity in roasting. CLASSIFICATION OF ORES For efficiency, it has been found advisable to separate the ores into two classes according to their line content. Other constituents have their effect, such as alumina and magnesia, but, speaking generally, these are roughly proportional to the line, which, as CaO, is used as the indicator. Class A contains not more than 2 per cent. CaO and comprises about 66 per cent. of the ore treated. Class B contains over 2 per cent. CaO, and comprises 34 per cent. of the ore treated. Typical analyses of both classes are as follows: Class A Class B Insol 56.70 75.90 Al203 2.30 3.40 Fe 3.26 3.48 CaO 1.57 5.12 S 1.79 1.80 Mg0 0.21 1.08 Ignition loss 3.20 6.50 99.03 97.28 The beds of each class of ore are made as large as possible with the available ore as it comes in, to avoid changing from one bed to the other any oftener than necessary. Each roaster will handle 50 percent. more of class A ore than of class B, with practically the same results. This necessitates changing the rate of feed for each new bed and tends toward a poor roast and loss of tonnage at each change.

[The steady increase of aluminum production means a corresponding increase of carbon consumption in the alumina-reduction cells. Improved petroleum techniques constantly reduce the amount of byproduct petroleum-coke production. These, trends threaten the alumina-reduction works with possible shortages of carbon, which must be supplied from some other source. In anticipation of this shortages, an investigation into the possibility of using coal as an alternative source of carbon was begun at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The investigation lit has developed bench-scale methods that produce carbon of higher purity than is required by specifications for anode carbon. Additional work will b required to bring these processes to pilot-plant seals and to prove the suitability of the carbons, produced or aluminum-anode consumption.]

Por ello, el campo doméstico se ofrece como la zona más idónea puesto que ofrece una mayor demanda de kerosene, al tiempo que el precio de venta es barato, que en un mercado libre de competencia y con kerosene a precio mundial, es más factible la posición de la antracita dentro del mercado. Otro posible lugar, lo encontramos en las chimeneas para calefacción, puesto que las briquetas de antracita son superiores a la leña u otro combustible y el costo es similar económicamente. En los usos industriales, se conoce que el consumo total de combustible alcanza 286 mil toneladas de petróleo residual y 46 mil toneladas de petróleo diesel, solo si el precio del petróleo desciende entre 360 y 400 por tonelada, la antracita podría competir. Finalmente, en algunas industrias pequeñas, el gas metanizado y construidode antracita en una planta central, es el preferible al del petróleo."

A preliminary characterization of soil components contaminated at a low level (7 nanocuries per gram) with toxic/radioactive metals has been carried out. Most radioactivity and metals content were present in the minus 100 mesh (<150 µm) size fractions. None of the size fractions examined qualified for uncontrolled disposal at dump sites, thus all material would have to be moved to discharge-controlled landfills. The metal content of the sample was below the limits for economical recovery, therefore eventual processing would be dictated by environmental concerns.

The low-grade talc deposits in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, are associated with a mafic-ultramafic rock complex that is part of a widely distributed schist and gneiss group. These rocks form a synform structure overlying Inner Piedmont lithology. Paragenetic sequence of the Tallapoosa talc is interpreted as enstatite-anthophyllitetalc. Talc occurs as massive boulders formed by the alteration of enstatite-anthophyllite and as finely disseminated discrete particles in the enclosing saprolite matrix. Weathered rock reaches depths as great as 60 feet. The quality and quantity of the talc, however, are variable. Mineral analyses of the talc-bearing samples, by petrographic grain count, indicate a talc content of 16 to 26 percent. Most of the talc occurs as plates or scales that are moderately stained with limonite. Fibrous talc also occurs in the deposits and is often mistaken for anthophyllite asbestos which is intimately associated with the talc. The size, shape, and occurrence of the talc deposits precludes any method of min¬ing other than open-cut. A small-scale mining operation began in the district in 1969. Potential capacity of the operation is 5, 000 tons per year. Inferred reserves, based on field investigations, are placed at approximately 8 million tons. The Inland Feeder project is a critical component of Southern California’s water delivery system, relying on a strategic plan of water transfer and storage to enable the delivery of an additional 650 million gallons of water a day. The Arrowhead West and Arrowhead East tunnels form part of this system, comprising the construction of nearly13 km (8 miles) of bored tunnel under the San Bernardino National Forest. This paper describes the design and manufacture of the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter precast segmental primary lining that will be used in these tunnels to resist rock loads, and up to 275 m (900 ft) of external hydrostatic head.

The methane gas emitted from coal samples collected from the conveyor belts dumping into silos was measured by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 50 pct of the total gas desorbed into a sealed can within 1 week was released during the first 24 hours. No simple correlation between the gassiness of the coal stored and the methane concentration in the silo open space above the coal was found. This was probably because the gassier coals were stored in open-top silos, which were better ventilated. Although the methane concentration in the open space above the coal pile was less than 1 pct for all 34 silos investigated, a methane measurement in the coal pile showed that high methane concentrations can exist. The methane released in the pile appears to accumulate and not liberate freely into the open space above the coal pile. Probably this gas is released during reclaiming operations, but further research is required to substantiate this claim.

For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains&apos; deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Direct digestion of phosphate ores by the acid-alcohol method offers improved leaching selectivity for the exclusion of iron and aluminum in the product acid. The leaching kinetics of this process will have a major role in the eventual application of this technology. The Bureau of Mines investigated apatite dissolution to determine the reaction rate and mechanisms of the leaching kinetics. The dissolution kinetics were monitored on various sized fractions of pure apatite. The "shrinking-core" kinetics model was applied to the data to determine the rate controlling mechanisms. For each size fraction, the initial reaction rate was controlled by the dissolution reaction. After an hour the dissolution rate slowed indicating a diffusion controlled reaction caused by the formation of calcium sulfate hemi-hydrate coating on each particle. For complete dissolution of the apatite, the phosphate rock should be ground to near 10 µ m size.

In 1965 Hoogovens was looking for additional capacity for burden preparation in the order of 2,5 to 3 million metric tons per annum of some kind of optimal blast furnace ore feed. In principle four solutions offered them-selves for further investigation: 1. purchase of screened ore and/or run of mine ores with the provision of a corresponding ore screening capacity on the blast furnace site; 2. manufacture of sinter; 3. purchase of pellets; 4. manufacture of pellets. After studying the technological, technical, economical and commercial factors Hoogovens decided for the last mentioned possibility. Before taking this decision not only a great number of different mixtures of iron ore were tested, but during a long period in one of the big blast furnaces a number of tests were also executed with purchased pellets from South and North America. It was found, that using 50% acid pellets with 40% basic sinter a coke rate saving of 25 kg per ton hot metal (50 lbs/net THM) and a production gain of 15% could be obtained as compared with a full sinter practice. With some pellets it became clear, that due to properties, commonly referred to as swelling, we got very poor furnace performances; so in studying the production of pellets, pellet quality should be regarded as the most important aspect of the problem.

"The processing of nickel laterites has been a topic of major interest at CSIRO for almost twenty years. During this period CSIRO has collaborated with other researchers and industry in developing a better understanding of existing processes and been actively involved in testing/developing new beneficiation and process options for these ores. The current paper summarises the results of selected studies and highlights improvements that have been achieved. Key topics to be discussed include enhancements in the mineralogical characterisation, beneficiation approaches, improvements in the understanding and application of leaching technologies, the development of synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) for the recovery of nickel/cobalt from laterite leach liquors and the collaborative development of the Direct Nickel process. Future opportunities and key research questions will be briefly examined.INTRODUCTION Nickel laterite ores comprise a significant resource in Australia and according to United States Geological Survey data nearly a quarter of world reserves are located there (USGS, 2016). More specifically, around 95% of Australian nickel resources (laterite and sulfide) are located in Western Australia (Australian Government, 2017). Given the recent closure of Queensland Nickel, essentially all of Australian nickel production occurs in Western Australia and the primary producers of processed nickel products include Nickel West (Kwinana) with ~84,000 t saleable nickel metal in 2016 (BHP Billiton, 2017), Minara Resources (Murrin Murrin) with 46,700 t nickel metal produced in 2015 (Glencore Australia, 2017), and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Ravensthorpe) who sold 25,882 t nickel as mixed hydroxide product in 2016 (First Quantum Minerals, 2017). The total sales of nickel from Western Australia in the 2015-16 financial year were 175,722 t. The study of nickel laterites at CSIRO recommenced at the time second generation High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) plants were being commissioned at Bulong, Cawse and Murrin Murrin in the late 1990’s. A combination of technical and engineering issues meant that the ramp-up times at these operations were slower than expected and the outcomes resulting from the attendant problems are well documented (e.g. Griffin & Becker, 2000; Reid & Barnett, 2002; O’Callaghan, 2003) while the issues faced at the BHP-Billiton-built Ravensthorpe plant have been addressed by the current owners of this project, First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Piper, 2012)."

The purpose of the 3DOPT Program is to determine, starting from drill hole data, the optimum economic mining limits for an open pit. The economic limits are defined as those which maximize total profit, i. e. total mineral value mined less the total mining and milling costs, subject to the restriction imposed by the pit slopes. To accomplish this, the program employs the following: (1) A three dimensional matrix of equal sized blocks in order to file the engineering data and the cost/value data required to develop the profit figure for each block of ore/waste. (2) A graph algorithm developed specifically for optimizing these profits.1

Metal complexed cyanides in wastewaters form as a result of interactions of free cyanide with metals present in the wastewater and exhibit varying degrees of stability, toxicity, and treatability. Thiocyanate, a pollutant commonly found in cyanide bearing wastewaters, is formed through the interaction of free cyanide with sulfur containing species (i. e. pyrrhotite) both present in the wastewater. In certain industrial processes, such as the beneficiation of gold and silver, cyanide is an essential reagent. Since free cyanide, complexed cyanides, and thiocyanate are potentially toxic to humans and aquatic organisms, these compounds must be removed from wastewaters prior to their discharge into surface or ground waters serving as potential potable water sources, marine or fresh water habitats

While some of the practical details of ilmenite smelting are not well documented, there is a substantial body of literature on the principles of ilmenite smelting, and the behaviour of solidified titania slag. This information is summarized, focusing on the basic reactions, departure from equilibrium, the behaviour of impurities, and reactions of solidified slag. The emphasis is on the South African operations.
