With the sharp fall in commodity prices, the terms cost reduction and higher productivity have become subjects that are constantly addressed in the daily life of companies, since these factors represent a question of survival of the organizations. To achieve this, the search for continuous improvement of our processes in order to guarantee space in the market is a reality and necessity, so it is important that companies know their processes in detail and have the maturity to make decisions based on data and facts. Thus, this work aims to apply the Six Sigma methodology to investigate which are the variables that most influence the transportation process, carried out by large trucks, increasing their specific consumption of diesel, which is the second largest expense of a company. mining in the city of Mariana MG. The goal of the project was to reduce diesel consumption in the large transport fleet by 7.4%, from 0.32 l / t (average carried out from Feb / 16 to Jan / 17) to 0.30 by February 2018 , with an estimated gain of R $ 4.2 million. The results achieved exceeded the established target, reaching a 10% reduction in specific diesel consumption, totaling a projected real gain of R $ 6.4 Million, in addition to the reduction of 1,710.52 t of CO2 in the atmosphere.

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

The time 06h30 in midwinter is a little early to set out on an excursion from Johannesburg. Yet this was the hour that members, many accompanied by their wives, started to assemble in the parking lot adjacent to the squash courts at the Wanderers Club, Illovo, for a visit to Premier Diamond Mine at Cullinan. All fifty were checked in and aboard the coach by 07hOO. Coffee and sandwiches, served en route by Doris Gardner and Pam Binstead, were most welcome. The Kennecott Copperton concentrator is currently the bottleneck for the Kennecott operation and several projects have been initiated to increase throughput. This increase in grinding circuit throughput has resulted in a coarser grind size which has impacted flotation circuit recovery. Metso Outotec 300m3 forced air tank flotation cells are currently utilized in the rougher flotation circuit at the Copperton concentrator. Higher overall recoveries have been observed on the newer Outotec tank cells compared to the original 85m3 self-aspirated flotation cells they replaced. However, coarse particle flotation response on these large, forced air cells did not show encouraging results when compared to smaller previously installed cells. This coarse recovery loss has been attributed to the longer froth transport duration and transport distance on large cells (100m3 and larger). Cell manufacturers addressed the risks of additional coarse particle losses in large cells by installing concentric circumferential launders and crowders (also called center launders). These are designed to reduce froth transport time and distance in the last cells in rougher stages where low residual floatable minerals causes a lack of froth mobility. The center launders also increase froth crowding, which also helps to increase froth transport velocity and increases copper and molybdenum recoveries. A trial set of the center launder retrofits were installed on the last three tank cells in one of the parallel rougher flotation rows at Copperton. The launder retrofits were installed at the end of October 2020 and monitored until March 2021. This six-month trial showed statistically significant improvements in copper and molybdenum flotation recoveries through the rougher circuit.

Tapping a blast furnace is necessary not only to deliver the product, but is also essential for the safety of the furnace and workers in the cast-house. This paper will highlight the practices at ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in the Vanderbijlpark Works, with specific focus on tap-hole design and monitoring as well as casting practice. Extension of the tap-hole life and hearth campaign will be illustrated with reference to the methods of maintenance of the tap-holes, troughs, runners, and cast-house equipment. The importance of proper cooling, good thermocouple installation, and temperature monitoring will be explained.

At New World, Au-Cu-Ag mineralization occurs in stratiform car-bonate-hosted, massive sulfide-iron oxide, and skarn-replacement deposits. Regional pyritic-alteration, local massive sulfide mineralization and mine wastes generate acid drainage within the district. Water quality improves down gradient through dilution and mixing of acid and metal-rich mine water with bicarbonate-rich, low-metal surface and groundwater, and precipitation of metal-rich ferrihydroxide phases. Natural deposits of ferricrete indicate that pre-mining ARD has occurred, providing important clues to pre-mining water quality. The geoenvironmental model identifies the Cu-skarn mineralization as the primary target for ARD management. Closure success will be limited by the geoenvironmental nature of the natural mineralization.

ONE of the chief concerns of the Bethlehem Steel Co. naturally is the proper functioning of its organization. This involves the training of a continuous supply of younger men to fill the vacancies caused not only by the inevitable departure of older men, but also by the growth of existing establishment, and by expansion in new directions. It does not oper-ate a student training course with a fixed time schedule or with definite periods of rotation through the differ-ent divisions. To state the case positively, the gradu-ate's training course must operate continuously from the beginning of his employment through a long term of years. No period of weeks or months nor pair of years suffice to bring him into contact with all the com-binations needed to qualify him for the larger destiny toward which we hope he is headed. Our first step in selecting a college man is to require that he have a degree. We thus approximate the assur-ance that at least four annual siftings have reduced the chance that a non-worker may find himself in a job where work is necessary. The next step is to try to ascertain facts, from the graduate and from others who have known him at his home and in 'his college, to indi-cate whether our opportunities offer him a career that will challenge his continuing interest, and hold him to tenacious effort against all happenings. We aim to avoid knowingly bringing into our organization a man who will not develop in it enough enthusiasm to keep him happily striving. Having made our selections, we assemble the gradu-ates into a probationary observation circuit. We-put ourselves under their observation by taking them in small groups, usually of two to four men, on a circuit of every part of the Bethlehem plant, in which every manufacturing principle of our steel business is ex-emplified. The probationers work at something from day to day, with their hands if it can be arranged; otherwise in questioning, examining, and note-taking. Their observations include talks with superintendents, foremen, and workmen, the conditions under which workmen labor, apparatus, machinery, methods, design and operation of plant.

"Oxy-fuel combustion is one promising option among different CO2 capture technologies. The object of this work is to show the effect of CO2 dilution on the laminar flame speed, flame structure and reaction pathway for methane oxidation at O2/CO2 atmosphere. In this paper, kinetic simulations were made using CHEMKIN with GRI-Mech 3.0 mechanism, which was validated by experimental data of laminar flame speeds. The reaction pathway of CH4/O2/CO2 mixture was derived from reaction flow analysis. Results showed that CO2 decreased the flame speeds, lowed concentration of major intermediates and increased flame thickness. The major chemical pathways of CH4 to CO2 have not changed at O2/CO2 atmosphere comparing with O2/N2 atmosphere, but contributions to major intermediates formation from each related elementary reaction have changed a lot. In addition, the secondary chemical pathways of CH3 oxidation became different at O2/CO2 atmosphere.IntroductionNowadays, as the global economy is developing fast and the pollutant levels (especially global warming gases) are increasing, a lot of researches are focusing on new technologies which can cut greenhouse gas emissions [1]. New technologies have been developed, such as high Mild combustion, flameless combustion and Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology. Oxy-fuel combustion using carbon dioxide as dilution of oxygen is considered as a promising approach for reducing CO2 emission. The properties of CO2 in flue gas are different from N2 in air. On one side, the transport, thermal and radiative properties of CO2 are different from N2 in air. On the other side, CO2 is not inert but directly participates in chemical reactions and recent researches [2-5] also present the chemical effects of CO2 on oxy-combustion. For these differences above, the characteristics of oxy-combustion are not alike with traditional combustion. It is necessary to develop the investigation of oxy-combustion.In all combustion processes, laminar flame speed is an important parameter, which links to combustion behavior. Analysis of this parameter can provide a better understanding of the effect of CO2 dilution in the process of oxy-combustion. Several investigations of laminar flame speeds of oxy-fuel flame have been improved, including experimental measurements and numerical computations. A.A.Konnov et al. measured the flame speeds of oxy-methane and oxy-ethane mixture using the heat flux method with a flat burner [6-8]. V. Ratna Kishore et al. used heat flux method to measure the adiabatic laminar flame speeds of hydrogen [9] and H2/CO mixture [10]. Adiabatic laminar flame speeds of hydrogen in O2/CO2 atmosphere are much smaller than in O2/N2 or in O2/Ar. The burning velocity of H2/CO mixture decreased with increase in CO2 content in mixture. Jeongseog Oh et al. [11] used Bunsen flame to measure the laminar flame speeds of premixed oxy-methane mixture with angle methods in atmospheric condition (300k, 1atm). The results were SL=29.1cm/s and SL=29.5cm/s respectively derived from oxy-methane from CH* images and Schlieren photos."

Much advance has been made in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in India. But the same amount of success could not be achieved in the case of other offshore minerals which are amenable for mining. However, employing present technology, there should not be any difficulty in successful exploitation with minimum environmental hazards. A demonstration is provided by considering the conditions prevailing in the Kerala offshore (southwest coast of India) scenario of monazite, ilmenite, phosphatic mud and calcareous deposits. Mud banks are unique phenomenon of the Kerala coast during monsoon season. Acting as barriers to waves, mud banks protect portions of the beaches from being eroded and trap sediments from either side facilitating growth of adjacent beach. The easy minable possibilities of the phosphatic mud during non-monsoon season with less pollution hazards and dumping back the waste material after processing for phosphate at the breaker zones to reduce the erosional effects on the coast make the exploitation economic and ecofriendly unlike the benefication of the lowgrade phosphate ores on land on a comparatively larger area and subsequent crushing, transport and resulting pollution.

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)

Dolomite is a calcium carbonate sedimentary rock that can be found all over the world. In its calcined form it is employed for water treatment or as an additive in iron production. Calcined dolomite is produced at the Wünschendorfer Dolomitwerk GmbH in shaft furnaces (kilns). Because of an expansion of the mined deposit, significantly higher extraction costs were expected. Therefore, the existing upgrading processes for the kiln stone fraction had to be adapted and improved. This paper presents a process optimisation which allows for an increase of the yield of calcined dolomite by 10 % due to a redesign of the crusher circuit and by an additional 5 % due to a comprehensive characterisation of the kiln stone fraction itself. Here the interdependency between the pressure drop in the furnace during calcination and the size distribution of furnace stones was used to increase the amount of fine size fractions in the furnace feed without deterioration of the calcination process. A geochemical study of cyanide neutralization processes was conducted at Brohm Mining Corporation to gain a better understanding of the leach pad behavior and to develop a simplified procedure to quantify the attainment of compliance with permitted cyanide neutralization criteria. Such attainment is a prerequisite for off-loading spent ore from the leach pad at the "load/unload" gold heap leach operation. The geochemical study program consisted of size fraction analyses and weak acid dissociable (wad) cyanide analyses for various sections of the spent ore from the actual leach pad. Further testwork included size fraction analyses and wad cyanide analyses on the ore from four 29 foot laboratory test columns which were leached and neutralized with different neutralization treatments in parallel with an actual active leach pad. Wad cyanide was analyzed daily on the neutralizing columns and various parameters were monitored weekly on the influents and effluents during the leach cycle and neutralization period. A comparison was made of neutralized effluent chemistry and porewater extraction fluids, as well as an analysis of the selective adsorption of cyanide on various particle size fractions.

Les LMSM-CANMET sont à réaliser une étude dont les résultats serviront à estimer l?influence de certaines technologies et systèmes de contrôle visant des économies d?énergie et à évaluer l?impact des unes sur les autres. En outre, un modèle de simulation est en cours de création afin d?évaluer les gains incrémentaux liés à l?application d?une série d?innovations dans une exploitation minière. The disposal of tailings has become a greater issue due to the changing economics of mineral extraction. The processing of lower grade deposits and tougher environmental regulations has led to the selection process for tailings disposal options becoming more complicated. Current selection methods are too time consuming or too easily manipulated for inexperienced users to use successfully. This paper examines a different method for the initial selection of a tailings disposal system, using a numerical system that was introduced into the mining method selection field. The numerical method system was compiled by reviewing previous work done on the positive and negative aspects of the tailings disposal methods used by the coal and metallurgical mining industries. Assessing the common trends and design aspects of each of the methods was undertaken and a ranking was designed to explain how well suited the tailings disposal methods are to a situation. The tool successfully analysed sites using common data to indicate methods for disposal that would have provided minimal technical problems, low environmental risk and been practically possible. The tool also proved successful in identifying critical areas that would need further investigation. This new system was tested on some disaster case studies from around the world in order to show that it could have successfully selected a different method for tailings disposal that would have prevented the disaster.

Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

"This paper deals with the fracturing process of laterally confined blocks of coal subjected to impact indentation. During the test, blocks of coal with approximate dimensions of 10 in. x 10 in. x 6 in. were laterally confined to predetermined equivalent in-situ stresses and then subjected to an impact indentation by dropping coal cutting bits (various shapes) attached to a known weight from a known height. During the test a number of parameters, namely surface strains (using strain gages), penetration depth (using L.V.D.T.) and acoustic emission characteristics were measured. After the test, the fractured surfaces were photographed with the aid of a camera attached to a microscope. The fracture, its intensity and extended zone within the coal blocks were mapped using sonic techniques. By correlating measured parameters, fractured zones under a given set of test parameters were identified and characterized.INTRODUCTION To improve the understanding of basic failure mechanisms in coal cutting, a better knowledge of fracture and crack regions caused by the indentation in coal is needed. This study reports the detailed experimental procedure used in fracture analysis of indentation experiments on coal specimens using the Acoustic Emission (A.E. hereafter) and sonic techniques. The relationship between microcracking and the inelastic deformation of rock was confirmed by a series of experiments in which the A. E. generated by the cracking in the rock specimen were recorded and the number of events were compared to the strain measurement. (Scholz, 1967).According to fracture mechanism theory, crack initiation in brittle materials such as rocks begins from ""flaws"" either pre-existing or induced by the indentation process itself. Rocks are pervaded by natural cracks and pores, from which numerous possibilities for crack initiation arise (Lindquist, Lai and Alm, 1984)."

The mill project at Lone Tree was commissioned in October, 1993, followed by the commissioning of the autoclave pressure oxidation circuit in February, 1994. Discussion of the first year of milling operations at Lone Tree is presented. The mill is currently operating above the design rate of 2,267 mt/d (2,500 st/d). Both phases of the start-up were essentially trouble free. The few problems that were encountered and the respective solutions are addressed.

During the past several years, more frequent reference to Wollastonite has appeared in print, both in this country and abroad. The reason for this is the apparent growing interest in this mineral as it approaches commercial maturity. Twelve years ago, wollastonite was available in only limited commercial quantity. In 1933, a deposit in California was worked for a short time to provide a calcium silicate raw .material for the manufacture of mineral wool* It was not until the spring of 1953 that Cabot Corporation put into operation a modem commercial plant to produce this material in a variety of grades. These grades covered both a range of particle size and of particle shape. At that time, applications for wollastonite were largely speculative, although a few commercial applications in glass frits and welding fluxes did exist, For all practical purposes, it was a new material for which few commercial uses had been fully proven.
